LIFESTYLE LETTER
Cheers to a New Year!
January 2022 PUBLISHER
Alan Eixman | Alan.Eixman@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR
Gabi De la Rosa | gabi.delarosa@lifestylepubs.com
January is about fresh starts, new resolutions, and resetting for the year ahead. This year I am changing things up a bit. Instead of making a lofty goal that I may or may not stick with after a few weeks, I decided to focus on small things that will upgrade my overall wellness. Instead of foregoing entire food groups (I see you carbs and sugar), I will focus on eating a smaller amount from both. And instead of banning alcohol, I will try to drink less - even one drink less is progress. I think most of us could benefit from subtracting “stuff” from our lives, but denying ourselves of life’s small pleasures won’t bring happiness. Declutter and make room in your mind, heart, and home for new experiences, which the new year should be about. What resolutions are you making this year? I’d love to hear about them - send me an email to let me know! Speaking of new experiences, why not make mobility part of your daily routine in 2022? In this issue, you will find nationally recognized fitness expert Dr. Jen Fabroni who shares five mobility exercises that will uplevel your health this year. You can also learn more about Honest Eats, Houston’s newest healthy meal delivery (and pickup) service. By the way, you may have noticed a new look for River Oaks Lifestyle. The new cover and editorial style bring a fresh perspective, just like the relevant and community-focused content we will provide in 2022. Stay tuned and stay in touch via social media - we want to hear from you. Whatever the new year brings you, I hope it is a happy and healthy 2022!

Honest Eats provides paleo, ketogenic, and plant based meals for pickup and delivery. Meals are locally sourced, organic and gluten free. ARTICLE BY RIVER OAKS LIFESTYLE STAFF | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HONEST EATS
Inspired by her niece’s diagnosis of brain cancer at age 3, Barbara Zuluaga, founder of Honest Eats, began to explore the thought that nutrition may have links to chronic illness and cancer. During this time, Barbara devoted herself to research and food quality. Eager to learn more about how certain foods affect our health, Barbara discovered compelling evidence that suggested the food we were eating could be making us sick. Frustrated by the lack of transparency in the food system and lack of easily accessible, healthy meal options, she founded Honest Eats in 2013. Honest Eats produces three specific meal plans for local pickup and delivery; ketogenic, paleo and plant-based. Each meal plan follows strict portion-controlled macronutrient guidelines, with a whole foods approach to health and nutrition.
The meals are 100% guaranteed to adhere to the following guidelines: Organically grown produce and grass-fed or organic proteins whenever possible, free of artificial preservatives, free of peanuts, corn and soy, free of artificial colors, free of chemical additives, free of gluten and made in the least processed or unadulterated way possible. Currently, Honest Eats offers pick-up on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesdays and delivery on Sunday, Monday and Wednesdays. Later in 2022, Honest Eats will open their first brick and mortar space in M-K-T Heights, 600 N. Shepherd Drive. Honest Eats storefront will offer meal plan pick-up, grab-and-go, a hot bone broth bar, and a gluten-free and ketogenic dessert case. honesteatshtx.com CONTINUED >

THE TOP FIVE MOBILITY EXERCISES YOU NEED NOW Nationally renowned mobility expert Dr. Jen Fraboni shares five exercises to keep you moving in 2022.
ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA
Although Dr. Jen Fabroni, PT, DPT, is well known for her gorgeous and exceedingly flexible poses on Instagram, she is acclaimed as an internationally-renowned physical therapist specializing in helping people overcome chronic pain and maximize physical performance. The “accidental influencer” and former competitive athlete uses her extensive social media platform to help people live a pain-free and active lifestyle no matter their age or ability level. She is the founder of “The Mobility Method” and “The Optimal Body,” where she utilizes her unique whole-body approach to strength, mobility, and pain-free living. “Rather than getting wrapped in numbers or status, I am committed to understanding what is working for people, how they are taking in and using information, and how I can make it more accessible,” says Dr. Fabroni. “I am focused on my purpose. The more I lean into listening to how I can continue to help, the more it continues to open and expand.” Through her years of practice, Dr. Fabroni has seen hundreds of patients and shares five mobility exercises based on where people are most often restricted. Instead of worrying about a specific number of sets and reps for each activity, Dr. Fabroni recommends committing to moving your body each day. “Remember, a little goes a long way,” she says. “Break up these exercises throughout the day and just move!” CONTINUED >

HIP 90/90: Addresses restrictions deeper within the hip joints and the musculature that helps with rotation of the hips. This stretch is excellent if you want to stay active and keep the pressure out of those knees or lower back. QUADRICEPS STRETCH: This stretch addresses the front of the thighs connecting into the pelvis. It is great for those who have long periods of desk sitting, runners, walkers, or those who rely more on their quads than glutes. SEATED BIG TOE STRETCH: This stretch is ideal for almost everyone because we must move and push off our big toes to maintain a functional gait pattern. It also helps to reduce the risk of compensations, bunions, and plantar fasciitis.

MEMORIAL HERMANN OFFERS 10 TIPS FOR LIVING A LONGER, HEALTHIER LIFE STARTING RIGHT NOW IN 2022.
CHEER S TO A HEA LTHIER YOU IN 2022 With 2021 now behind us, and COVID-19 vaccines readily available, we are looking forward to a brighter year ahead. Throughout the pandemic, one thing has become increasingly clear: life is precious and protecting your health is so important. Memorial Hermann offers tips for living a longer, healthier life. 1. Know where you stand. See your primary care physician for a complete physical and a check of your key health statistics, including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body mass index (BMI). 2. Set goals, not resolutions. Choose a small number of goals that are most important to your short- and long-term health and wellbeing. Track your progress and celebrate successes every step of the way. 3. Get screened. Early detection is one of the best defenses against serious illness. Screenings for breast, cervical, prostate, colorectal, lung, skin and other cancers save lives. Your physician can help determine when and which screenings are right for you. 4. Get vaccinated. From chicken pox to whooping cough, vaccines and immunizations protect you and your family from preventable diseases. The COVID-19 vaccines are available and proven safe for adults and children, plus everyone 6 months and older should get an annual flu vaccine. 5. Get moving. Regular exercise should be part of every health plan. Start by walking. It’s good for your physical and mental health. Get your kids involved and walk or play outdoors as a family. Always check with your doctor before starting a new exercise regimen. 6. Prioritize mental health. Depression and anxiety have been on the rise during the pandemic. Don’t be afraid to speak up to get the help you need. COVID-19 has taken an emotional

toll on kids, too. Their pediatrician is someone they can talk to about what they’re feeling. 7. Manage stress. Stress management can have a positive impact on health, both short-term and long-term. Try mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), meditation, gratitude and journaling. 8. Eat whole food. Replacing meat and processed foods with fresh fruits and vegetables, chicken, fish, nuts, seeds and whole grains can reduce your risk of cancer and improve your immunity, heart health and longevity. 9. Watch food portions. Educate yourself and your family about healthy portion sizes. A portion of meat, poultry or fish is 2-3 ounces, about the size of a deck of cards. And by cooking more meals at home, you can better manage portion sizes. 10. Lose excess pounds. Being significantly overweight can lead to life-threatening illnesses, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart disease and stroke. Obesity also increases your risk of developing serious complications from COVID-19.
Make a fresh start in 2022. Schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor today. To find a physician, visit mhmg.memorialhermann.org or call 832.658.MHMG (6464).

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition
The Cold Plunge
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”
30
S ELF CA R E | FITNESS
Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
