The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination. Our family celebrates Christmas, and my favorite traditions were getting a "real" Christmas tree and setting up the candles that would light up our windows (electronic, of course!) On Christmas Eve, we would go to church, and then we were allowed to open one present from extended family. I hope the memories I make with my child will be ones she cherishes forever as well. This month, we wanted to highlight the season's magic and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We've compiled a gift guide to make your shopping more manageable, and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area offers this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. In the true spirit of the season, let's take care of those in our community who need assistance or are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy, and love. Happy Holidays!

Houston business owner Bryan Clary remembers his first distillery visit like it was yesterday. He was 8 years old, but the experience left a lasting impression. “I was born in England and raised all over the world,” Bryan, now 38, recalls. “I was a military kid.” His parents wanted to expose him to different cultures, so they took him all around the United Kingdom. Their trip to Scotland included Loch Ness, Edinburgh Castle and Glenfiddich distillery. “I have a vivid memory of being hoisted up on my feet and smelling the beer brewing in the mash tun,” he says. This memory sparked Bryan’s “aha!” moment when he realized he wanted to create a similar experience in Houston. “We wanted to build a destination distillery that is family-friendly, so people can come and have great experiences like that and remember us for years to come,” he says. Bryan and his business partner Zachary Hiller — a Houston native — made that dream a reality when William Price Distilling Company opened in Garden Oaks. The company is named after Bryan’s fourth great-grandfather, William Price Clary, the first of his family who, in 1848, moved to Texas from Illinois, where he owned a liquor store. When Bill wasn’t selling spirits, he was wagering $10 that his cousin would beat Abraham Lincoln in a wrestling match. Bryan and Zack planned to open their distillery in 2020 but had to pivot when COVID-19 arrived. They pivoted by selling hand sanitizer, providing jobs to hospitality workers who had just been furloughed. CONTINUED >

The duo also donated funds to bars so that they could stay open. In December 2020, Bryan and Zack finally launched their spirits, then opened their tasting room in April 2021. “It's been a long and winding road," Bryan says. "Without the support of friends and family, we wouldn't be here." COVID-19 caused major delays and hard choices. “We had to choose to pay rent and payroll instead of installing our equipment,” Bryan says. “Now we are looking for investors to complete startup, distill our own whiskey and fund growth.” William Price Distilling offers a variety of spirits, including coffee liqueur, gin, limoncello, rum, rye, single malt, vodka and whiskey. On July 1, 2021, Texas became the fourteenth state to lift restrictions on student-athletes receiving compensation for the use of their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). This legislation came after a Supreme Court ruling that the NCAA did not have the power to remove "educational compensation" from players receiving NIL payments, including scholarships. The NCAA is currently working with Congress on a federal NIL policy, but until then, each state has the right to make its own NIL laws. Although 29 states now have NIL legislation, players in states without NIL laws can take advantage of the NCAA's Interim Policy. This policy states that students' ability to compete in intercollegiate sports is unaffected by their decision to participate in NIL partnerships. Although the universities do not broker the deals for the players, they are accountable for figuring out whether or not their actions comply with state law. Texas law prohibits a player from entering into an endorsement with any business selling alcohol, tobacco, gambling services, and several others. In response to these changing policies, college alums all over the country are forming collectives, organizations that facilitate NIL deals with their school's student-athletes. The collective will work with local and national businesses, linking them with players that can market their business' products and services. student-athletes. Founded by UH alum Austin Elrod and Troy Kyle, this organization provides opportunities many students never thought possible. Although most college athletes are on scholarships and do not have to worry about tuition, meals, and room and board, many come from underprivileged families who cannot offer their children any additional spending money. "I've had multiple athletes cry over the phone asking 'what? me?' Just a couple thousand dollars is changing these kids' lives," says Sales Development Director, Landon Goesling. Most of the NIL deals are not million-dollar endorsements. The majority of the

partnerships are small local businesses looking to expand their market presence by partnering with a popular local athlete. For example, LinkingCoogs has already placed many athletes in partnerships with Houston-based companies, including Hogue Landscaping, Fritz Kennel, Suitmart, Inaka Power, and many others. Houston staple BB's Tex-Orleans, has partnered with the entire University of Houston basketball team. BB's owner, Brooks Bassler, is thrilled with the partnership. "It's a real treat to have such high-quality young men representing our brand," says Bassler. "This team is the epitome of respectful, hard-working, well-mannered, and just all-around class acts. They are

winners on and off the court, and we are excited to partner with them." Partnerships are not limited to big names in basketball and football. Any athlete is eligible for NIL deals, including volleyball players, tennis players, and golfers. UNIQUE HERITAGE AND HISTORY Geo. H. Lewis dedicated his life to funeral service, beginning when he started working with his uncle, C. Ed Settegast, in 1901. In 1936, Lewis joined H.L. Fortinberry Funeral Home, located in the old Waddell family home at 2404 Caroline St. in Houston. The firm then changed names to Lewis & Fortinberry. After a year, Lewis bought Fortinberry’s share of the business and changed its name to Geo. H. Lewis & Co. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
