Giving Thanks
November 2022 PUBLISHER
Alan Eixman | Alan.Eixman@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Christa Eixman | christa.eixman@citylifestyle.com
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because it's an opportunity to give thanks and to reflect on all the things we have in life to be thankful for, including our friends and family. It also gives us an opportunity to think about those less fortunate than us and put others' needs ahead of our own. While ambition, competition, and meeting goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey can leave us missing out on what truly matters. This season, it is essential to move beyond the intention of showing gratitude and helping others, and put our thoughts into action. Has someone helped you out recently? Maybe this is an excellent time to write that thank you note. Have you been meaning to get your kids into volunteering but just haven't found the time or the right opportunity? Maybe it's time to choose an organization and sign up. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community it is. This holiday season, as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, and in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, let's set time aside to consider what makes life meaningful and reflect on those blessings. Blessings to you and your family! ALAN EIXMAN, PUBLISHER @RIVEROAKSLIFESTYLE

H OW TO | HOM E + D ESIGN
In a world where mass-produced goods are the norm, Houstonbased rug merchant Alex Mohammadzad embraces the art of handmade rugs. For Alex, rug making is about more than just creating a unique product — it’s about connecting with clients and understanding their needs. When he was 12, Alex traveled the world with his father, learning the family business. While traveling, he fell in love with the art of rug making. He then made it his life’s passion to buy rare antique rugs and design extraordinary recreations. Thirty-eight years later, he is the owner of Ashly Fine Rugs, which recently relocated to 4222 Richmond Avenue in Houston.
His wife, Helena, and son, Rashid, have joined him full time, while their daughter, Yazmeen, helps with social media advertising part time. The family’s passion extends to a new initiative Alex started to feed weavers and their families. “Most rugs are made in poor regions of the world, and weavers might get a chance to eat rice and meat once a year,” he says. Every month, the business supplies its weavers with chicken, rice and vegetable oil. “We also buy sneakers once a year for their children so they can play and just enjoy being kids,” he says. For more information and to view their collection, visit ashlyrugs.com.

Silent
Strength Texas Philanthropist Kristi Schiller Regains Voice After Surviving Stroke 30
M UST SE E | L IFE + CU LTURE
While standing in the parking lot of H-E-B back in 2021, Kristi Schiller came to the startling realization that she didn't know where she lived — or even her name. It was 11 a.m., and the Texas philanthropist had spent the last two and a half hours shopping. Now she was waiting for her groceries to be loaded into her car. When the employee asked her how long she's lived in the area, she couldn't answer. "I had this raging headache and didn't know my name, didn't know where I lived," she recalls. "I was becoming more discombobulated as I stood there, and the poor kid loading my car could see I was rattled." Thankfully, her husband, John, called her and gave directions on how to get back home. Since then, 52-year-old Kristi estimates she's had a least a dozen days like the one in the parking lot. Symptoms have ranged from crippling migraines and neck pain to stuttering and shortterm memory loss. Little did she know, the symptoms she was experiencing were likely the warning signs of a stroke.
A SURPRISING DIAGNOSIS Kristi, a Quarter Horse breeder and founder of the nonprofit K9s4COPS, dedicates her life to helping people. But now she found herself in a place where she needed help. She went to the doctor in 2021, and an MRI showed she had suffered multiple strokes. She couldn't believe this happened to her — after all, she was healthy and didn't drink alcohol or smoke. Nonetheless, she was admitted to Houston Methodist. She spent a month in the hospital before returning home to Schiller Ranch near College Station. The hardest part of recovery was losing her voice and learning to speak again. "The most humbling thing in the world is sitting in speech therapy and trying to learn about Jose putting an apple in his plaid coat and sharing it with his friend on the bus," she says. "It sounds like nothing, but then trying to say something like that is difficult." But with the help of her medical team and daily medication, she is nearly recovered. CONTINUED >

SUPPORT ON THE JOURNEY
SPREADING THE WORD
Kristi's family and friends have been there to support her through it all. They include her husband and daughter, Sinclair. Her friends, Alissa Blow and Kristin Brown, have also been by her side, along with Houston Police Sgt. Stuart Red and Harris County Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Moore who helped run K9s4COPs. "When you have a great support system, you just aren't as scared," she says. Kristi is still involved with K9s4COPs, which helps fund the purchase of K9s for public safety agencies. She also launched K9s4KIDs, an organization providing trained K9s to schools and universities to make them a safer place for students, faculty, staff and visitors. And now, she is using her platform — which includes 139,000 followers on Instagram — to advocate for stroke awareness and prevention, and sharing her story with The American Heart and Stroke Association.
According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer worldwide, with stroke ranking second in the United States. Kristi is determined to share her story to raise awareness about the warning signs of strokes and how to prevent them. She stresses the importance of knowing your family’s medical history and because the signs of a stroke can be different for everyone, she urges people to get regular check-ups and not ignore symptoms. "Just because you're a certain age, don't think it can't happen to you because you have a healthy lifestyle," she says. "You still need to be aware." A stroke may have stolen Kristi’s voice for a while, but it couldn't steal her spirit. She is living proof that determination and strength can overcome any obstacle.

Your Autumn Dinner Party Is Served Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings.
For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

Insider Tips for Hosting:
• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . FRESH ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS & HARDWOOD SMOKED BACON Yield: 6 servings 4 cups Brussels sprouts, raw, halved 1-2 tablespoons olive oil ¼ cup yellow onion, sliced 1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thin 1-2 cups bacon, smoked, thick cut, large dice • Salt, pepper to taste • 2 tablespoons real butter, unsalted • Optional garnish - 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
The Recipes
• • • • •
CRANBERRY ORANGE ZEST SAUCE Yields 4 cups
METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. Preheat oven to 400 °F for convection setting, (425 °F conventional). 2. In mixing bowl, add oil and cut raw Brussels sprouts. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Place seasoned sprouts on baking sheet and bake in oven until done, about 20-40 minutes (soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some dark brown color). Remove from oven. 4. Place large sauté pan on medium heat and render bacon. Add a splash of olive oil to get it going, if needed. Cook until bacon is crispy and golden brown, 5-10 minutes. 5. Add onions to pan and cook until soft, 5-8 minutes. 6. Turn heat to high and add garlic and butter and cook for 1 minute. 7. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to pan and toss all together. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 8. For optional garnishes, add fresh chopped parsley. 9. Serve and enjoy!
CHEF NOTES: • If Brussels sprouts are large, cut in quarters. • Rendering bacon means extracting the bacon fat which adds a lot of flavor to the dish.
• • • • • • • • • •
3 cups cranberries, fresh or frozen 1 cup cranberry juice, sweetened 1 piece orange peel 1 each orange for zesting ½ cup orange juice, freshly juiced 3 each cinnamon stick ¼ teaspoon clove, ground ¼ teaspoon allspice, ground ½ cup sugar Pinch salt

While simmering, stir occasionally with rubber spatula ensuring bottom does not burn. Simmer for 30 minutes or until sauce thickens. 3. Remove lid and add orange peel and season to taste. Can add more sugar or spice if needed. 4. Once sauce is thickened and most liquid has evaporated, remove orange peel and cinnamon sticks and remove pot from heat. 5. With hand-held blender, puree sauce, keeping some texture. 6. Freshly grate in orange zest, stir and season to taste. 7. Transfer sauce to jar and place in refrigerator to cool overnight. 8. Enjoy!
CHEF NOTES:
Bon appetit! Chef Kyle Williams, Savor & Swirl
• Enjoy with all types of poultry and game birds. • Do not use ground cinnamon. • Can puree with blender if you do not have hand-held blender. • Consistency should be thick sauce and not a jelly. CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / R I V E R OA KS

Wine Pairing
According to Savor & Swirl, wine pairing doesn’t need to be overly complicated for a casual outdoor dinner party. Have a lighter and fuller body style of white and red available with some sparkling thrown in. “Lighter to medium-bodied wines from Rhône Valley, Italy or California would be a good place to start,” they state. “Viognier is one of our favorite wines that goes great with fall-inspired cuisines. Pinot Noir wine goes great with just about any food. Lean towards California or Willamette Valley for a new-world style and go with France for a more earthy, old-world style. A big bold Napa Cab would fall in perfectly for the grilled ribeye steak! Cheers!”

Get In Alignment
DR. BARRETT TERRY, WITH THE THE JOINT CHIROPRACTIC, SHARES
Chiropractic medicine is a natural way to improve health that has existed for more than a century. Based on the principle of the body’s ability to heal itself, chiropractic care focuses on the proper alignment of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), 35 million Americans are treated annually by chiropractors. Those numbers continue to grow due to the continued demand for drug and surgery-free alternatives to pain management. We chatted with Dr. Barrett Terry with The Joint Chiropractic, West U, to get a deeper insight into the practice and its benefits.

HIS INSIGHTS INTO CHIROPRATIC MEDICINE INCLUDING PAIN RELIEF
What is the goal of c h i r o p r a c t i c m e d i c i n e?
The goal is to adjust the body’s musculoskeletal system so that proper alignment can occur, allowing the body to heal without having to take medication or undergo surgery.

Why is spine h e a l t h i m p o r t a n t?
The spine is the conduit carrying all messages from the brain to the rest of the body via the spinal cord and nervous system. The central nervous system controls every cell and organ in the body, so our cells must get the appropriate signals to function to their fullest potential.
03
What are the benefits o f c h i r o p r a c t i c c a r e?
Homeostasis, or the body regulating itself, is one of the most important benefits of chiropractic care. Other vital benefits include increased range of motion, stress relief, improved posture, and decreased pain intensity throughout the body, reducing reliance on pain medications.

What ser vices d o y o u o f f e r?
At The Joint Chiropractic, we provide routine and affordable chiropractic care through hands-on chiropractic adjustments, focusing on each patient’s unique needs and goals through various stages. In the relief stage, our chiropractors will focus on reducing your pain over 4-6 weeks, with multiple weekly visits. The recovery phase focuses on supporting the body’s ability to heal itself. Finally, the wellness phase helps maintain the progress made during the relief and recovery phases.
05
Is regular chiropractic c a r e f o r e v e r y o n e?
Everyone can benefit from regular chiropractic care to prevent, diagnose, and treat spinal disorders; however, every person has different health needs and goals. It is perfectly acceptable to come to The Joint Chiropractic on an as-needed basis since we have convenient hours, no appointments required, and no insurance approvals needed.
