community. I have, and will always call Houston a "town". I grew up going to the Astrodome for many Astro and Oilers games. I’ve been to so many rodeo’s over the years, I’ve lost count. A few of those do include Elvis Presley in 1974 (my first ever concert at age 5 that my parents let me tag along to) and George Strait in 1983, when he was called from his ranch at the last minute to replace Eddie Rabbitt. I started my career in advertising right out of college. As most do here in this town, I was quickly recruited to the energy industry where I spent most of my career working with analysts and trading groups. That was definitely a wonderful time, but I am very excited to return to the publishing and advertising world. I look forward to working with local business owners, meeting new people, and becoming even more involved in this area where I grew up. Being a part of a community can make

PROTECT YOUR KIDS FROM COVID-19
LEARN WHY THE VACCINE IS SAFE AND EFFECTIVE FOR CHILDREN 12+ The FDA has done its homework, and the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is considered safe for children ages 12 to 15 years old. It has shown to be highly effective in preventing the COVID-19 virus in this age group; more so than in older age groups. Unvaccinated children are being infected with COVID-19. Symptoms can be far worse than the potential vaccine side effects. And they can last longer, while vaccine side effects are usually mild and temporary. Talk with your child’s doctor. Learn the facts so you can get your kids vaccinated and keep them safe when going back to school.
To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine for your kids, visit memorialhermann.org/covid-vaccine-children
Advancing health. Personalizing care.
COVID-19 VACCINES AND KIDS: WHAT PARENTS SHOULD KNOW Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital recognizes it can be challenging for parents and families to navigate the overwhelming amount of information available regarding COVID-19 vaccines and kids. Below, we present frequently asked questions about the COVID-19 vaccines to help you make informed decisions to further protect the health of your children and your family.
How do we know that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for children?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which granted Emergency Use Authorization of COVID-19 vaccines, is globally respected for its scientific standards of vaccine safety, effectiveness and quality. The FDA evaluated data from tens of thousands of study participants to ensure that each vaccine is safe. Based on this research, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that anyone who is eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine get vaccinated as soon as possible.
If my child has food allergies, is it safe for them to get the COVID-19 vaccine?
Unlike the flu shot, COVID-19 vaccines do not contain food products such as egg proteins. Be aware, however, that some people have an allergy to polyethylene glycol (PEG), which is used in many medications, including the COVID-19 vaccine. If your child is allergic to PEG or has experienced a severe allergic reaction to other injectable treatments, please consult with a doctor.
In general, children have been at low risk from developing serious illness from COVID-19. Why should they get vaccinated?
Keep in mind, low risk is not no risk. While most children with COVID-19 have mild symptoms or have no symptoms at all, severe illness and death have been reported in children under the age of 1 as well as children with underlying health conditions. Vaccines are helpful in preventing illness and disease, and the COVID-19 vaccine is no different. Getting vaccinated protects children from developing severe complications from COVID-19 and reduces the chance they could spread the infection to others.
My child has had COVID-19. Will natural antibodies be enough to protect him/her from another infection?
While doctors do not know yet how long we are protected after having COVID-19, they do know it is possible to contract the virus again – and early research is showing that natural immunity may not be as effective as vaccines in protecting against new strains of the virus. The CDC recommends vaccination even for those who were previously infected, especially as more infectious COVID-19 variants develop.
What side effects can my child expect after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine?
As with other vaccines, children may feel tired or have a sore arm, low-grade fever and other flu-like symptoms following COVID-19 vaccination.
For more information about COVID-19 and vaccines, visit memorialhermann.org/covid-vaccine-children Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital believes in the safety and efficacy of all COVID-19 vaccines currently available and invites all members of our community 12 years of age and older to get vaccinated. Advancing health. Personalizing care.
However, these symptoms are typically mild and go away within 48 hours.
Does the COVID-19 vaccine have a long-term impact on fertility? How can I be sure it won’t affect my child’s development?
According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is no evidence that any vaccine, including the COVID-19 vaccines, affects development or fertility. In fact, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that breastfeeding women get a COVID-19 vaccine so that antibodies can be passed through breastmilk and help protect their child from the virus.
There have been reports of heart inflammation in young people after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. How should this impact my decision whether to vaccinate my child?
Federal health officials – including those with the American Academy of Pediatrics – have advised that heart inflammation (myocarditis and pericarditis) is an extremely rare side effect of the COVID-19 vaccine. Importantly, for the young people who do experience this side effect, most cases are mild and individuals recover often on their own or with minimal treatment. Myocarditis and pericarditis are much more common in individuals who contract COVID-19, and the risks to the heart from COVID-19 infection can be more severe.

F O X H O LT FOX-HOLT.COM @FOX_HOLT Founded in 2019 by fashion industry mavens Dale Volpe and Katy Rowley, FOX HOLT was born from the idea that we can live beautifully while still taking proper care of our planet and its inhabitants. Both women came from executive positions with well-known fashion and designer labels but found a space lacking in the ethical market. Mothers first, they wanted to create a new label that would help educate consumers about the benefits of sustainability in fashion while inspiring a movement toward thoughtful purchasing to leave a better world for their children. FOX HOLT responded to the demand for wellcrafted, luxurious products made consciously and sustainably. They created a community of designers, artists, and specialists who are passionate about change and impact. The Houston-based brand will have a pop-up in River Oaks District beginning in October. “We are thrilled to have this opportunity. Providing Houstonites with the chance to experience our e-commerce marketplace in such a personalized way is exciting,” stated FOX HOLT’s co-founders, Katy Rowley and Dale Volpe. “We love our new community and have quickly learned that there is an established network of conscious shoppers who are eager to explore this rapidly evolving industry. Our goal in partnering with River Oaks District is to marry our mission-driven programming with their refined retail and lifestyle landscape. We can’t wait to join forces and bring FOX HOLT to life in a fun, stylish, and educational way.”

C H R I S T Y LY N N CHRISTYLYNN.COM @CHRISTYLYNNCOLLECTION.COM Founded in 2019, The Christy Lynn brand provides luxury, readyto-wear fashion for the modern yet romantic woman. The Fall 2021 Collection, ‘Le Voyage Botanique’, was inspired by the 19th-century French botanist Jeanne Baret, the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. Featuring several restored vintage floral prints from France, the brand is excited to include original artwork from Lynn’s sister, a designer in New York. The ready-to-wear capsule introduces vegan leather separates, wool capes, and tissue cashmere to the roster of ethereal silk chiffon and organza. Dresses are where Lynn continues to excel; her classic silhouettes are fall wedding sophisticated yet easy enough for a Sunday brunch. Lynn holds a BFA in Fashion and Fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design and over a decade of experience as a fashion designer in New York City with Catherine Malandrino and Elie Tahari. In two short years, the refined collection has amassed a steady following and can now be found in over 40 retailers across the United States. The fall collection is available in Houston at Tootsies, Golden, and the Christy Lynn Showroom in Montrose. “Our clothes are an extension of

SHOPGRIFFY.COM @SHOPGRIFFY GRIFFY hit the Houston scene during the pandemic when owner and designer Ellie Austin started making jewelry in the summer of 2020. She felt isolated from friends and family and decided to make jewelry to feel connected to others. “The pandemic shifted so many things for all of us. I think there has been a movement towards nostalgia, and the times that we remember feeling safe and comfortable and happy,” she says. “The seed bead bracelets remind me of sitting on the floor in the art shed at camp making best friend bracelets with my buddies. I wanted to elevate that nostalgic, happy feeling and put a modern twist on traditional crafts. I believe that idea has resonated with a lot of people.” Clients can choose from customizable totes, jewelry, mugs, and embroidered items. Although GRIFFY provides phrases, Austin encourages clients to personalize their items to make them memorable. “I believe that in the age of having everything everyone else does at a simple “swipe up,” there has been a return to wanting things to feel a bit more grounded and personal. Everything I sell can be customized, whether it’s a bracelet, necklace, market tote, or hand-embroidered baby onesie. I want people to believe that what matters to them matters to me. And I LOVE helping people think up their ideas.”

MYSTERIOUS BY NPN NICHOLAS PHAT NGUYEN MYSTERIOUSBYNPN.COM @MYSTERIOUSBYNPN Born in Vietnam, Nicholas Phat Nguyen moved to the United States when he was 15. Without much family support, Nicholas finished high school and pursued a degree in international business in college. Nguyen’s foray into fashion began during his last year of college in 2014 when one of his friends, who knew of his love for design, applied him to Fashion X Austin. Within one week, Nguyen created a small 12 piece collection and finished it by hand sewing a garment during the car ride from Houston to Austin. Although entering the show was a risk, he won the Critics’ Choice Award and began his career as a fashion designer. Since then, the couture designer has shared several collections featuring beautiful fabrics and a mix of Eastern and Western cultures. “My style reflects what I am feeling at the time,” says Nguyen. “They are my creative outlet - I consider them more than fashion; I consider them to be art.” 20

SCENERY SCENERYBAGS.COM @SCENERYBAGS Jen Khan, former New Yorker and Broadway stage manager turned Houstonian is on a mission to save theater waste into upcycled accessories. She creates bags from used theatrical materials like backdrops and upcycles them into one-of-a-kind accessories. Her product line gives theater enthusiasts a piece of the show to keep as a souvenir while helping to reduce the carbon footprint of theatrical productions. SCENERY’s products are made in the United States, and ten percent of profits are given to the Theater Development Fund. “We’ve collected almost 30,000 pounds of theatrical waste and sponsored over 1,100 students through TDF Introduction to Theatre Program and Accessibility program,” says Khan. Although SCENERY started with bags, the company keeps evolving. Khan has added jewelry and, most recently, home decor. “After four years in business, starting in handbags, and launching a jewelry line two years ago, at the end of August, SCENERY launched the first product of their home line, with Bookends made from the set of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Freestyle Love Supreme.
