The Houstonian Hotel Hosts Inaugural BBQ on the Bayou Cook-Off The familiar smell of smoking pits filled the air on February 28th when over 100 guests gathered outdoors for some delicious BBQ, and a socially distanced BBQ cook-off at the Manor House at The Houstonian. Five official cook teams competed in the Inaugural BBQ on the Bayou Cook-Off for bragging rights and trophies decided by celebrity judge Levi Goode. Guests enjoyed country music, outdoor seating on the back lawn of the Manor House, cocktails and all the brisket, chicken, and ribs they could eat. Photo Credit, Daniel Ortiz.

PIER 6 SEAFOOD & OYSTER HOUSE IN SAN LEON, NEAR KEMAH, IS THE BRAINCHILD OF LIFELONG OYSTERMAN RAZ HALILI WHOSE FAMILY HAS BEEN OYSTER FISHING ON THE GULF COAST SINCE THE 1970S. After years of running the family’s business, Prestige Oysters, Halili decided to take the next step and open a restaurant showcasing the Texas Gulf Coast’s bounty. To ensure delicious flavors and innovation in the kitchen, he tapped award-winning chef Jose Cervantez, best known for his time at Brennan’s of Houston. About an hour’s drive from Houston, the restaurant sits right on the water, offering beautiful views and abundant indoor and outdoor seating. The menu is full of seafood classics like Shrimp Cocktail and Grilled Tuna, but executive chef Cervantez also lets his talent shine with dishes like Tuna Tostada and Piri Piri Grilled Shrimp. The cocktail menu is robust and fun – try a frozen flight and enjoy the Gulf Coast breeze. Don’t let the drive warn you off the popular restaurant - guests can make dining at Pier 6 a weekend affair by staying at The Bungalows at Pier 6, the restaurant’s luxury condominiums. Newly constructed with large rooms, beautiful decor, and gorgeous sunset views – they are the perfect destination for a quick weekend getaway.

texas hill country escape ESCAPE WITH A ROMANTIC JOURNEY TO AN ALLURING TEXAS HILL COUNTRY BED AND BREAKFAST.

ONCE THE SITE OF AN OLD MILL, THE CREEKHAVEN INN SITS ON THE EDGE OF CYPRESS CREEK IN WIMBERLEY, A SCENIC HILL COUNTRY PLAYGROUND BETWEEN SAN ANTONIO AND AUSTIN. The romantic lodge is nestled in a picturesque property thick with gnarly cypress, sycamore and pecan trees. Guests can meander along its private creekside, watch birds and native deer or rest easy beneath Creekhaven’s eclectic greenhouse patio. “The energy is indescribable, but definitely palatable,” says Helena Hauk, who owns Creekhaven Inn along with her husband, Don Huak. The couple purchased the bed and breakfast just two years ago, upgrading facilities and adding their own twist to the property’s nearly 100-yearold history. Creekhaven’s natural beauty, set atop the rocky Edwards Plateau, is a stark contrast to Cypress' grassy, urban terrain. Summers are less humid and its distance from sprawling cities make for quiet, relaxing evenings. The shade from Creekhaven’s ancient trees and its proximity to the creek, keeps the property even cooler than nearby Wimberley. Each guest room at the Creekhaven boasts its own unique personality. The spacious Bluebonnet room is painted a deep navy and styled with ornate furniture. The Cherokee Rose room is adorned with bold reds paired with vibrant textures. Creekhaven’s prime location makes it an ideal getaway for those wanting to relax or explore nearby attractions such as wineries, art galleries, swimming or hiking. “You can come out and pack your days or be lazy and hang out by the water,” Helena says. “The Texas Hill Country is abundant with unique interests, and it is all well within 30 minutes to an hour of Creekhaven!” Creekhaven boasts a nearly 100-year-old history. The location - once a working mill site -supplied power and irrigation to landowners nearby until the 1930s. The owner at the time built a small fishing cabin, adding to the location's appeal as a woodsy retreat and campground. In 1979, Jimmy and Barbara Ireland, of River Oaks, purchased the property, restored the fishing cabin, built new rooms and installed a stone waterfall. Jimmy, an engineer, carefully sourced native stones from the Wimberley Valley and cedar lumber so his construction designs could blend into the natural landscape. The couple also built a quaint greenhouse where Barbara could grow orchids. The greenhouse’s metal skeleton still stands today. After her husband’s death, Barbara renamed the property the Singing Cypress Gardens and in 1983 began renting rooms, establishing the location as Wimberley’s first bed and breakfast. Years later, the Huaks expanded the property to sixteen rooms, making Creekhaven Wimberley’s largest bed and breakfast. CreekHavenInn.com 512-847-9344 400 Mill Race Lane Wimberley, Texas

Benefits of a

chemical-free home

HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO TURN YOUR HOUSEHOLD CHEMICAL-FREE? It's not as hard as you might think! We hear a lot about the dangers of chemical ingredients, but it's easy to ignore all of the warnings and keep using our favorite products. When you don't know of a better alternative, it's just what you do! However, all of those ingredients add up and can make a big difference in your health, as well as the health of your family and pets. The products that are most important to swap out depend on your lifestyle and what you use the most. If your little ones are eating food right off of the counter, you might consider the ingredients from the cleaner you just used to wipe it down and start by switching to a natural method.

ARTICLE HAYLEY HYER

If you have sensitive skin, you might start by taking inventory of your beauty and personal care products to see what you can replace. To get you started, here are three DIY products that you can make yourself for your chemical-free home.

DIY (CONTINUED)

DIY Scented Body Moisturizer Just like a new candle can brighten your day, a shimmery scented lotion can make you feel like a queen. The only problem is all of the artificial fragrances, alcohols, dyes, and other chemicals that your skin is absorbing from that bottle. There are some cleaner options such as unscented lotions, but that's a lot less fun. This DIY moisturizer allowed you to customize your own scent while still treating your skin the best you can. The key ingredient? Olive oil! Yes, any bottle of olive oil from your kitchen works. Pour some in a smaller bottle and add several drops of your favorite essential oils. Olive oil is super hydrating, feels great, and will make you question why you ever used lotion in the first place. Plus it's safe for your whole body. Just be mindful of the essential oils you choose. Some types—such as peppermint, eucalyptus, or tea tree oils—cause a cooling effect and can feel uncomfortable if it gets on your face or other sensitive areas.

DIY Counter Cleaner: Safe for Granite + Marble! You probably know that vinegar is a great natural cleaner for most surfaces. Unfortunately, it can be pretty damaging to delicate countertops made from granite or marble. Here's a DIY cleaning spray that's safe for any type of counters you have!

Ingredients + Rubbing alcohol + Dish soap

+ Essential Oils + Water

Directions In a plastic or glass spray bottle, mix one part alcohol with one part water. Add several drops of dish soap and whichever essential oils you would like to add for your desired scent. Shake it up each time you use it as the ingredients will tend to separate. Although it's natural and safe, still avoid spraying directly on your skin as the alcohol and dish soap can dry you out.

DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.

Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils

Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.

While these three recipes give you a great start, that's definitely not all you can do to kick the chemicals out of your home. For more information on starting a chemical-free household, you can browse online resources such as ChemFreeCom.com or find a social media group to join with like-minded people who have some experience from their own trial and error. If you get overwhelmed, remember that you don't have to get rid of all chemicals in one day. Every swap you make is something to celebrate!
