and drinks Houston has to offer. I hope you enjoy the list of restaurants featured in this issue and add some new ones to your repertoire. It is hard to believe Tex-Mex favorite Molina’s Cantina has been around for 80 years! In these pages, you’ll find out more about their origin story and how they are now proudly serving third and fourth generations of the same customers that have been with them since the beginning. You can also read about Lone River Ranch Water, owned by West Texas native Katie Beal Brown. And just in case you indulge in all of our restaurant recommendations, Aurea Med Spa’s dietitian Tabbetha Lopez shares tips on how to shed unwanted pounds. By the way, are you as blown away by the cover photo as I am? Julie Soefer Photography perfectly captured the Housemade Vermouth from MARCH Restaurant. WHAT STARTED OUT IN 1941 AS A SMALL RESTAURANT IN WHAT IS NOW THE RIVER OAKS AREA HAS BECOME THE OLDEST FAMILY-OWNED AND OPERATED TEX-MEX RESTAURANT IN HOUSTON. At the time, there were only a handful of Mexican restaurants in the city, and while Raul Molina and his wife Mary opened their restaurant to create a better life for themselves and their children, they would unknowingly become one of the founding families of Tex-Mex cuisine in the fourth largest city in the United States. Molina’s Cantina is responsible for introducing Houstonians to Tex-Mex classics like chili con carne, enchiladas, and guacamole. Many of the same dishes that were on the menu in 1941 are still made from scratch daily and prepared in small batches using fresh ingredients. The restaurant has received many accolades over the years for signature dishes like the Original “Jose’s Dip,” named for a former waiter who began adding spicy taco meat to his customer’s queso. Guests loved it so much that it not only became a menu staple, but remains a best-selling favorite to this day.

HOUSTON’S OLDEST FAMILYOWNED AND OPERATED TEX-MEX RESTAURANT TURNS 80!
Ricardo, Raul III, Raul Jr, Roberto Molina
The lifespan of a typical restaurant is five years - Molina’s Cantina has exceeded that by several decades and is now bringing the fourth generation of family restaurateurs into the fold. “It’s hard to believe that, after eighty wonderful years, our grandparents’ dream is still alive and well,” says Ricardo Molina, third-generation Molina’s Cantina co-owner with brothers Raul, III, and Roberto. “A lot has changed since 1941, but we are so blessed to continue serving many of the same families three and even four generations later. It’s an honor to be a Houston tradition for our friends and neighbors, many whom we consider family.”

T r avel R ecom mend at ion s for Food ies “Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” In addition to travels, Dennis is a huge advocate for supporting local businesses and the connection grilling in your own backyard can make. “Grilling is inherently communal. You talk to your neighbors, they smell it, they ask you what you’re cooking; the whole act of it is a community. One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start?’ Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.” CityLifestyle.com/RiverOaks
