We have tapped into that eclectic mix this month with a delicious “Valentine’s Day on Cooper.” And for our River City Kitchen entry, join our multifaceted friend Michael Varner at home for his version of “Korean Bibimbap.” When Michael is not overseeing operations at his company, Guardian Concierge, or sharing his talent as a concert pianist, you can often find him perfecting his skills in the kitchen. And, of course, any talk of loving our local culture must include our magazine’s namesake, the Mississippi River. This landmark adds grandeur to the cityscape while connecting us to neighboring communities that form the Midsouth community both across the river in Arkansas and down the river in Mississippi. STRENGTHENING MEMPHIS ONE LEADER AT A TIME

ARTICLE BY JEANNIE TABOR | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BONNER MORGAN Kemmons Wilson, along with Sandy Willson, founded Nexus Leaders 20 years ago to help launch the next generation of leaders committed to strengthening our city. The primary goal is to encourage and equip the next generation of community leaders through mentor/protégé partnerships and a yearly program implemented by Nexus’ Executive Director, Heather Hunt.

Each year, a new group of 35 protégés are selected based on recommendations by previous participants, board members and the corporate community. These emerging leaders are paired with 35 mentors, who are proven leaders within their profession and Memphis. Heather says, “We are intentional about preserving the class size of 70. This allows us to provide an intimate group, and everyone can get to know each other well.” Lewis Williamson, a Nexus mentor and board member, discusses the process of recruiting mentors. “We recruit mentors whose character, commitment and competence we would like to see ‘duplicated’ in Memphis.” He laughs at the initial response he often receives from a successful Memphis leader: ‘I just don’t have the time.’ To which Lewis responds, “Wait a minute – how do you know how much time is required?” The yearlong commitment includes monthly meetings between protégé and mentor as well as monthly programs including dinner, fellowship and a notable speaker from the Memphis community. Lewis mentioned that at first he thought the meetings had to be formal, but then he realized that a Grizzlies game or a more casual get-together often worked best for establishing strong relationships. Frank Crump, one of Lewis’ first protégés, shares, “Our monthly sessions were often at the Williamsons’ home. It was very informal, and our conversations would range from business discussions to personal decisions that I was facing. It is beneficial as a protégé to be able to develop a trusting relationship with someone who has already experienced your current phase of life.” Alissa Campbell Shaw, another Nexus mentor, says, “I’ve walked with my protégé, Ellen Celosky, at Shelby Farms, we have volunteered together at local nonprofits, and we have had great conversations while enjoying a meal together.” Ellen adds, “Alissa and I are able to have very honest conversations, and I believe that has happened because a major component of the program is trust – trusting the process, trusting your mentor and trusting yourself. Alissa was vulnerable and led with openness, which I responded to very positively and quickly.”

The vibrant speaker schedule for the current class includes Jason Wexler, President of the Memphis Grizzlies and Elizabeth Rouse, President and CEO of ARTSMemphis. Frank says, “The monthly group sessions are helpful for multiple reasons. They are a way for all of the protégés and mentors to interact and get to know one another. Additionally, they allow everyone to be inspired by and learn from the guest speakers who cover a range of topics, including how to give back to our Memphis community.” Alissa adds, “I take notes during each session and continue to find little nuggets of wisdom from each leader.” Protégé Ellen points out, “There are so many unique obstacles that women face daily in the workforce. I am expecting a baby in March, so I regularly look to other working mothers like Alissa for advice and counsel because that’s a layer that can create an additional set of challenges.” Addressing challenges facing women in the workforce, Alissa says, “My primary goal is to help other women to thrive personally and professionally. My job is to listen more than to talk. I want to build their confidence so that they can continue upon a successful path. My ultimate hope is that they will similarly serve as a mentor to develop a future pipeline of talented women leaders along the way.”

The class size of 70 (35 mentors and 35 protégés) enables everyone to get to know each other well.

Even founder Kemmons Wilson has personally benefited from the Nexus program. “There is great fulfillment in investing in the future,” he says. “I have mentored a diverse group of twenty protégés and I have learned far more from them than they did from me. The relationship works in both directions.” One of Kemmons’ first protégés was Kennon Vaughan, founder of Downline Ministries. Kemmons asked him, “What are your dreams and plans for your life? How can I help you?” Once he got the ministry off the ground, Kennon asked Kemmons to be the chairman of the board, a position he still holds today. When Kennon decided to establish Harvest Church and be the lead pastor, Kemmons joined as an elder. “So, the tables are reversed as I now sit at his feet every Sunday morning,” says Kemmons. The success of the Nexus program is evident in the fact that each year the program receives more applications than spots. Memphis leaders offer keys to success in their monthly meetings, and the protégé/mentor relationships are lifelong. Heather says, “We just provide the nexus – opportunities for people who might not otherwise meet but who are like-minded in the fact that they want leadership skills and they want to help our city move forward in a positive light.”

A MIDTOWN BUNGALOW

“As a native Memphian, I am so happy to be back home.” A young professional in her early 30s found a Midtown bungalow built in 1917 to call home. It had been recently renovated and the interiors freshly painted, but it was in need of a character boost. The homeowner enlisted Maggie Clarke Interiors to help integrate the old with some new. “The homeowner travels to France every year with her family to source beautiful furniture, art and home decor. To say she already had an amazing collection is an understatement,” says Maggie, design principal at MCI. “The special things in her home have already had a long life of their own. It was so exciting to bring them to a new space. With a lot of antiques to incorporate, we

focused on contemporary light fixtures, streamlined upholstery silhouettes and modern art for juxtaposition,” she adds. Maggie and design associates Amanda Montgomery and Hannah Phillips readied their wands to infuse the home with color, pattern and texture. But first, the entry needed to wind back the clock with a few architectural details. “The historic home had a fireplace, not original to the home, with no mantel or surround. We used our go-to trim carpentry team, Midtown Remodel and Repair, to create a custom fireplace mantel resembling the same woodwork throughout the house. We then sourced a small-scale square black tile for the surround that is true to the era of the home,” says Maggie. CONTINUED >

An antique mirror from France hangs over the fireplace and an authentic Japanese collar is hung over a console table that holds more of the homeowner’s decorative arts collection. A marble pedestal table from CB2 creates a landing place in the open entry. The dining room has several found, antique treasures that shape the space including the dining table and buffet. The team added modern chairs from Coley Home that call for lingering dinner guests. The metallic gold wallpaper from Schumacher has flowering branches that reflect the natural light. A large black and white portrait of Elvis that sits between two sconces above a bar cart is one of the homeowner’s favorite elements. “I was surprised and delighted that the MCI team incorporated the Elvis piece into my dining room. The photo adds interest, playfulness and a bit of funk to what can stereotypically be a formal space,” says the homeowner. Upstairs in the primary suite, the grandeur is played up in a color story with a distinct balance between masculine and feminine lines. Walls are covered in grasscloth from Schumacher, and the trim is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Woodland Green. A moody landscape from artist Chelsea Fly acts as a headboard hung on picture rail molding. The bedstands are from Modern History, a contemporary English furniture line that is reminiscent of generations past.

The ceramic and brass accent lamps from Visual Comfort add depth to the space. The chaise lounge barely made it to the scene. “I embrace any quirks of a house. In this case it was a workaround. We had to shave the legs of the chaise lounge down to move it up the narrow steps to the bedroom of the early 1900s home,” Maggie says. “But we made it work.” The living room is the only living space downstairs and functions more like an ‘everything’ room for watching TV, lounging with morning coffee or sharing cocktails with guests. Maggie chose smart textiles and custom elements where they would be the most impactful. “When she moved in, the homeowner had the walls painted a shade of white. We wanted to add a big punch of color through furniture, art and accessories,” says Maggie. “A furniture plan was necessary - along with layers of pretty and function,” she adds. It’s hard to watch TV comfortably on a vintage sofa, so the team brought in new upholstery pieces. Two aubergine, striped upholstered ottomans act as flexible seating. The aubergine color is carried throughout the space by adding welting on the bespoke cornice boards made by Elkins Custom Furniture and welting on the custom chartreuse sofa pillows. The team sourced a vintage burled wood end table from the 70s. The living room spills into the entry, so the team extended the Peter Dunham window treatments to both spaces. CONTINUED >

For continuity, the design team changed most of the overhead light fixtures to contemporary Visual Comfort fixtures. “We also added two wall sconces in the entry and living room. Anytime we have an opportunity to add light sources on different eye levels, we take it,” says Maggie. “As a native Memphian, I am so happy to be back home,” says the homeowner. “Maggie and her team have brought it all to life.” A favorite art piece in her living room from Frances Berry says “Memphis. The only place that coulda made me.” A storybook beginning for this homeowner and her Midtown bungalow.

Get into a conversation about blues roots music and most people will defer to Robert Johnson. Ask Johnson who his go-to guy is. His answer? Charley Patton. You’d also get the same response from Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Son House, and eventually Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. Patton laid many of the foundations that defined the art form and pushed it forward. The whiskey growl, syncopated (off the beat) rhythms, energetic stage rituals, and seamless guitar strumming created a near religious experience in one joint after another. His approach to the guitar set the template for countless musicians over the next century. Blues is undoubtedly a fixture on the American landscape. By the 1950s, it erupted into numerous splinters, all of which still had one foot in the misty Mississippi Delta on Blues Highway 61, our legendary route along the Mississippi River running south from downtown Memphis, Tennessee, to Vicksburg, Mississippi. By Ted Gioia Those of you who know the blues well know that the genre is often accompanied by legend and myth. In his acclaimed book, Delta Blues, Ted Gioia takes an honest, no-nonsense approach to telling the story of the blues as accurately as possible. It may be the best introduction to the blues ever written. Gioia is highly praised both for his accuracy and his articulation.

DEEP BLUES: A MUSICAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA By Robert Palmer

In general, blues lovers and reading lovers alike can’t say enough about this book. Although most blues listeners already know the correlation between African music and blues music, Palmer covers it extensively, even going as far as pinpointing the very area where blues originated.

ESCAPING THE DELTA: ROBERT JOHNSON AND THE INVENTION OF THE BLUES

By Elijah Wald Like Gioia, Elijah Wald attempts to deconstruct the myths surrounding the life and music of Robert Johnson. Robert Johnson: The Complete Recordings album symbolizes, in many aspects, the blues and its greatest musical representation. Wald explores the modern notion of Johnson and blues in general while dismantling our romantic notions along the way.

THE LAND WHERE THE BLUES BEGAN

By Alan Lomax Behind every great musical movement is a culture that is cultivating it. Alan Lomax’s award-winning book is as heartfelt as it is insightful. Lomax traveled through the Delta, tape recorder in tow, to interview people and capture moments along the way. He chronicles his adventures in this exceptionally charming and fact-filled testament.

This savory recipe is graciously shared with us by River City’s Michael Varner. Michael welcomes us into his kitchen as he concocts one of his favorite go-to meals which is incidentally also a very healthy and delicious choice if you are planning to spend your Valentine’s night in! Bibimbap, which translates to “mixed rice,” is a Korean comfort food. The dish consists of rice mixed with a variety of vegetables and a protein of your choice. To start, the rice and veggies are partially cooked in a skillet or wok, then assembled in a stone bowl called a Dolsot. The stone bowl is heated to a very high temperature either on the stove or in the oven. This step finishes the cooking process, giving the rice a crunchy texture. Finally,

after all of the ingredients are added to the Dolsot, drizzle with the traditional Korean condiment, Gochujang sauce. “It’s delicious,” Michael proclaims. A hearty, low-calorie dish that is high in fiber, carbohydrates and protein sure sounds like a winning combination. Depending on the meat you choose to incorporate (beef is most common but chicken or shrimp can be used as well), you can have some fun with wine pairings. With so many complex flavors in the dish, it will come down to personal preference but a Riesling, Gewürztraminer or a Pinot Noir would each complement the diverse flavors and spices in the Bibimbap. But don’t just take Michael’s word for it. Here’s how to recreate this savory dish at home and get your veggies in, too. CONTINUED >

BIBIMBAP Ingredients • ½ English cucumber, thinly sliced • ½ teaspoon rice vinegar • 1¼ teaspoons sesame oil, divided • 1 cup fresh mung bean sprouts • 2 servings thin shaved beef, cubed chicken or shrimp, cooked in pan with sesame oil and 3 cloves garlic • 1 cup shredded carrots • 4 cups baby spinach • Any other vegetables you may have around! • 2 cups cooked short-grain white or brown rice • 2 fried eggs, cooked in a little sesame oil • Sesame seeds • Sea salt • Kimchi, optional, for serving • Chopped scallions, optional, for serving Instructions 1. In a bowl, toss the cucumber slices with ½ teaspoon rice vinegar, ¼ teaspoon sesame oil and a pinch of salt. Set aside. 2. Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Drop in the bean sprouts and cook for 1 minute. Drain and set aside. 3. Heat ½ teaspoon sesame oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the carrots and a pinch of salt or a splash of soy sauce. Cook, stirring for 1 to 2 minutes until a little bit soft, and then remove from the pan and set aside. 4. Heat ½ teaspoon more sesame oil in the skillet and add the spinach. Cook, tossing, for 30 seconds or until just wilted. Remove from the skillet and gently squeeze out any excess water from the spinach. 5. Assemble the bowls with the rice, cucumber slices, bean sprouts, carrots, proteins and spinach. Top with a fried egg. Add the mushrooms, if using. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and drizzle generously with the gochujang sauce. Serve with kimchi and scallions, if desired, and the remaining gochujang sauce on the side.

GOCHUJANG SAUCE Gochujang sauce is a popular Korean condiment known for its unique and complex flavor profile. The paste that is the foundation of the recipe can be found at local Asian grocery stores and specialty food stores like Whole Foods. Ingredients • 2 to 3 tablespoons gochujang paste • 1½ tablespoons rice vinegar • 1 tablespoon sesame oil • 1 tablespoon maple syrup Instructions 1. In a small bowl, whisk together the gochujang paste, vinegar, sesame oil, and maple syrup. Use less gochujang paste for a mild sauce. 2. Spoon onto bibimbap bowls or use as a dressing for any veggie rice bowl.
