New Year. New Vibe

January 2023 PUBLISHER

Christian Owen | christian.owen@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Lindsey Tonkin | lindsey.tonkin@citylifestyle.com PUBLICATION DIR ECTOR

I love January. As a native of New Orleans, it always feels like the beginning of Mardi Gras. Once I get the holiday decorations down and stashed, I like to take it a step further and clean out closets and purge the pantry. I might also consider a detox, a 5K or a new paint color, but mostly, I dream of King Cake and marching bands. A clean slate can inspire new resolutions and routines. It's a perfect time to evaluate priorities, cherish what is precious and tend to what is fragile. It can be an exciting time, but also a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectations that this year will be different. Not to worry. Drink more water and take more walks and plant some bulbs. Volunteer with a local charity or pick up a new hobby or sport. Curate a stack of books to read, plan a getaway or try a new restaurant or recipe. Whatever it is, enjoy your people and spread some joy. Let's also support our incredible local sports teams. January is an exciting time for the Memphis Grizzlies and University of Memphis Tigers basketball. In addition, we look forward to the return of the Memphis Showboats this spring. This issue of River City Lifestyle is intended to inspire our readers to make lasting, long-term improvements to their physical, emotional and mental health. Carefully consider where you direct your energy in the new year and resolve only to do what is sustainable over the long haul. It's not what you do some days that moves the needle - it's what you do MOST days. For better or worse. Here's to you!

Financial Health Investing your money is an emotional and personal decision. Whether you have just started your investment journey or have been deeply invested for thirty years, the emotion never dissipates as everyone's wealth management journey looks different. At Kimery Wealth Management, Kevin Kimery and his daughter, Rachel, understand the magnitude of educating yourself on wealth management and the benefits of putting that knowledge to use. This father-daughter team works hard to empower first-time investors and long-time clients with the tools and ability to grow their wealth.

Founder Kevin Kimery has worked in the wealth management field for decades. He has fine-tuned his approach to this practice over the years: "The wealth management field has evolved significantly since I started almost 30 years ago. I became frustrated with the corporate environment and the limits imposed on my practice to provide the services I knew the market wanted… I knew my team, and I could provide a higher quality customer service experience as a fiduciary-based independent Registered Investment Advisor RIA. It also allowed me

to move away from the commission-based environment and solely focus on delivering advice." Kevin landed his practice in Memphis after much experience at Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch. "I have always known this is where I would end up. As with many things in life, it was a matter of timing… Just wish I had done it 15 years sooner!" As a father of four, Kevin often thinks about the importance of understanding investment power from a young age. The challenge is consistently reaching and connecting with this younger crowd to communicate the power they have as 20-somethings. When the opportunity arose for his daughter Rachel to work alongside him after college in 2022, it made a lot of sense. At Ole Miss, she majored in Marketing and discovered a genuine interest in social media. She asked her father if he had ever considered hiring for a social media and marketing role at Kimery Wealth. Kevin says Rachel "is a natural when it comes to customer service. She has been that way from the time she was born. She was also hungry to learn the financial services industry and pushed herself to excel." Together, the father-daughter team has explored new marketing channels on social media and beyond. Kimery Wealth Management's platforms reach a highly varied audience, ranging from 18 to 75 years old. They also have a monthly newsletter, a commercial on WMC Channel News 5, and a weekly educational segment on Fox 13 on Sunday mornings. The 20-something client can be more elusive in the wealth management space. For the younger crowd, wealth management can feel like something you tackle once you're older, once you've accumulated significant wealth, and once you "know what you're doing." Kevin and Rachel encourage young people to consider retirement plans, investments

and earning power as early as possible. While the barrier to entry into the investment space may seem high to a 22-year-old, Kevin and Rachel create a welcoming and encouraging environment to learn about wealth management. "We reassure them that it's easier than they think, and they most likely know a lot of it already,” Kevin explains. Kevin asks college-aged investors, "What is your first memory of money?" He receives a wide range of responses, but the answers highlight how those first memories of money shaped their perception of investment and money management. Some remember receiving ten dollars when they lost a tooth or earning their first 20 dollars helping with yard work. Others recall hearing conversations between their parents about college tuition or paying the babysitter. Whether we recognize it or not, our disposition towards investment at a young age is primarily impacted by the attitudes and approaches of those around us. To understand the young client's risk threshold, Kevin first builds his understanding of their parents' attitude towards investing. Kevin sees this connection and uses it to create a budget and investment plan that feels comfortable for the young client. As a peer to this younger demographic, Rachel has seen many friends shy away from the money management world. Rachel has accumulated much advice and valuable tidbits from her dad over the years. She passes the direction along: "If there is anything I tell my friends, it is that now is the time for us to start planning and gaining an idea of what financial planning means." Kevin and Rachel always return to the benefit of starting young and building a financial knowledge foundation early. Kevin advises many young adults as they leave college and prepare for the next chapter.

“We reassure them that it’s easier

than they think, and they most

likely know a lot of it already.”

“I am thankful to have a father who cares so much about his daughters and their future… I don’t think he will ever stop giving advice.”

Kevin asks his younger clients to picture the lifestyle they imagine for themselves and consider whether the career path they're heading toward supports that lifestyle. He encourages every young person to create a budget, not to be restricting, but rather freeing. To properly craft a budget, you must jointly understand your earning power and spending habits. Once Kevin understands their risk threshold and financial goals, he offers a few foundational dos and don'ts for first-time investors:

14

M ON E Y M AT T E R S | FINANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

• Focus on your credit card score sparingly. "I have maybe used my credit card score ten times in my life," Kevin says. • “Do not get caught up accruing credit card points - the credit card companies want you to spend more money.” • Set up your retirement fund immediately so it can start and continue to grow exponentially. "Go for a Roth 401 K if your company offers it."

Beyond these initial steps, it's up to the client to decide how to move forward as they enter the workforce, graduate school or get their first raise. Kevin does not often see the 20-somethings return for a while, if at all. Kevin says, "It's hard getting them back in to see us. They always feel like they're going to the principal's office." Kevin identifies complacency as one of the most significant pitfalls for the young investor. Kevin strives to provide his four daughters and all young investors with the tools and information to remain consistent and goal-oriented in their wealth management journey. Rachel says, "My father has always wanted to ensure that his four daughters, as women, are confident and aware of what is happening in our financial world.” Kevin tries to encourage young people to be brave enough to return for their second appointment. "I am thankful to have a father who cares so much about his daughters and their future… I don't think my father will ever stop giving advice, whether you ask for it or not, but I am very thankful because one day, I hope to have just as much to share," Rachel concedes. Investing doesn't have to be intimidating, especially when you have a seasoned guide and you start early.

“My father has always wanted to ensure that his four daughters, as women, are confident and aware of what is happening in our financial world.”

Pro Health MEDICAL INNOVATION IN A SPECIALIZED, SMALLER SETTING

ARTICLE BY CHRISTIAN OWEN

LOCA L’S CH OICE | WEL L NE S S

In a metropolitan area where innovative medical care is robust in the form of far-reaching, large hospitals and research institutions, it is not surprising that the language of medical innovation is well spoken in specialized, smaller settings as well, for example, at Pro Health. Founder Estes Folk says Pro Health provides traditional medical services with innovative medical treatments "in a fast, friendly, no-hassle way." Pro Health is especially known for weight loss injections, IV infusions, testosterone replacement and sinus cocktail shots. Estes adds,

"We have a full menu of IV infusions and treatment rooms with reclining chairs and TVs. We offer IVs to fight fatigue, relieve migraines, strengthen immune systems, fight sinus congestion, improve hair/skin/ nails, and even cure hangovers!" This entrepreneurial endeavor has multiplied over the past six years. The second clinic, Pro Health East, opened its doors in 2022. With a third Memphisarea location on the horizon in 2023, it is not surprising that Estes says his mantra in their busy new year ahead is "one day at a time."

The Inspired Series

To know the talented Sarah Bell is to love her. Our River City Lifestyle photo editor never meets a stranger. But, if you truly know Sarah, you are aware that stylish glasses are her weakness, and, she says, a source of inspiration for her aesthetic as a photographer. She is most tempted by the selection at one locally owned, unassuming shop in Midtown, Eclectic Eye. Lindy Faulkner, director of operations at Eclectic Eye, says the independent, eyeglass designers they work with create truly unique, high-quality options that can build into an eyewear wardrobe. Lindy says many don’t realize that the eyewear coming from high-end fashion lines is rarely made with the same approach used when creating couture clothing. In contrast, “The collections at Eclectic Eye represent artists, designers and craftsmen who are working to maintain the integrity, sustainability and quality in the eyewear space.” The Weinberg family answered Memphis’ need for an optical destination that celebrates unique eyewear designs and focuses on high-quality optometry care when they started Eclectic Eye in 2002. Lindy adds that the internal ethos at Eclectic Eye is to provide the best customer service experience and to be actively engaged in the surrounding community by supporting local organizations and artistic endeavors in Memphis.

Connect Healthcare Collaboration SHINING LIGHT ON SOLUTIONS WITH COMPASSION

January: a new year, a fresh go at new resolutions, and, for many of us, a new health insurance policy year. With healthcare costs rising, many employers must decide whether to cut benefits or pass along rate increases to their employees. A fresh card arrives in the mail, a new deductible looms, and possibly a new network to navigate as you manage treatments for existing or new diagnoses. You may need an actual human on the phone to help you understand your options. Good luck! Taking the mystery out of the benefits space is Connect Healthcare Collaboration (CHC), the brainchild of Memphian and CEO Sally Pace. "First and foremost, we are employees who also have to navigate the healthcare system. We have families that have to do it, too," says Sally. Communication; what a concept. It seems so simple. And yet, it took a working mother in the marketing field, married to an insurance broker, to conclude that there just had to be a better way. "My husband, Ashley, was the genesis behind CONTINUED >

“We were working on an enrollment for a local hospital and one woman shared that she had recently had a stroke in her e ye and wa s having a hard time reading. It turn s out that she had voluntar y products in place that she had not taken advantage of because she didn’t know how to f ile a claim . We were able to help her immediately recover ten s of thousands of dollars simply because we took the time to listen .”

"We come to the table with a unique ability to take that same attitude of advocacy we deploy for our families and apply it in our work life." Sally Pace

the idea, but his passion is infectious. I learned that I could marry all of my strengths and build an exceptional team who could help us make an impact in the benefits space," says Sally. "Growing something from scratch is hard. You learn a lot. You fail a little. And, you have to be willing to pivot." CHC launched in 2015 and is headquartered here in the River City. Leigh Dill, VP of Operations, joined CHC in 2020. Leigh possesses a unique perspective as her previous career centered around data analytics in the benefits space. She "speaks the language" of a relatable ally to the decision-makers and the employees they represent. "From an employer’s standpoint, it is their only expense where they essentially hand employees a black Amex without limits. It’s not that employees want to overspend. Most of the time, they simply don’t have the information they need." One universal piece of advice for all healthcare consumers is to ask questions. Ask until you receive a direct answer, then get a second opinion and price shop. In doing this, you are protecting yourself and your family, and also your employer. The more CHC works with clients through their comprehensive benefits marketing services, clinical advocacy services, onboarding and enrollment services, the more they recognize broader healthcare needs. Leigh adds, “We have seen more and more holes and disconnects between stakeholders in the benefits industry. This led to the creation of The Granite List, an online platform that gives vendors, brokers, and employers a voice.” With careful coordination, communication and collaboration throughout the healthcare cycle, CHC establishes trust and achieves financial and, oftentimes, life-saving success. While their existing business lines continue to grow exponentially, these trailblazing leaders just might leave a larger legacy in the healthcare space. Leigh and Sally affirm, “By shining light on solutions that control costs and improve health outcomes, we know we can help move the needle in reducing unnecessary healthcare spending in our country for employers, for employees, for everyone."

A LOOK INSIDE LOCAL ARTIST CATHERINE ERB’S EPONYMOUS STUDIO ARTICLE BY MARGARET LEDBETTER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH BELL, SÉLAVIE PHOTOGRAPHY

The new year looks bright in Catherine Erb’s art studio. Over the past year, she transformed a detached garage into a light-filled space to create her luminous photo-based works of art. She designed the space with Jeff Edwards of the award-winning architecture/design firm Carlton Edwards. “We wanted to capture as much northern light as possible,” says Erb, with massive windows facing a dreamy courtyard to the north. The light and warm white interiors inform her prolific work. The space includes designated zones for printing, processing, painting and her signature encaustic work. Encaustic uses pigments mixed with hot wax and burned into the work, a delicate and challenging task that Erb has mastered. There is an inspiration wall with vintage cameras, collected treasures from her travels with friends, family and other artists, and a cozy spot for her loyal assistant, Lucas the Labrador. A Memphis native, Erb has been working professionally for over two decades, producing multiple series, including botanicals, clouds and marbles. Erb layers her images with materials like wax and oil pastels to create an ethereal quality. Through various techniques, she imparts meaning to everyday objects and elevates the ordinary into the extraordinary. “I am always trying to capture things that are fleeting,” she says, which explains why she is rarely out and about without her camera.

Her cloud images and marble studies are widely acclaimed. They have been featured in galleries throughout the United States and many notable local collections. She has re-considered the urban landscape with blurred effects to expose the raw beauty of billboards, graffiti and River City landmarks. Every cloud painting tells a story, and each marble work represents an act of kindness that transcends children’s games with energy and movement. While Erb is busy with multiple commissions at any given time, she is also constantly learning new techniques and experimenting with different materials in the studio. Her latest work is a series of frescoes inspired by her years in Europe, which will be displayed at the David Lusk Gallery in Memphis in March 2023. The technique is a meticulous layering of plaster superimposed with her photographs. The effect is sculptural, as if carved in stone or “fossilized,” she says. She captures images of botanicals and natural specimens under layers of glass to create dimension and depth. Many of her subjects are from special gardens or events intended to preserve precious memories. Each piece is rich with energy and movement, the type of transcendent energy she seeks in all her work.

Look for part two this April in our series with Catherine Erb, when we will explore the artist's personal art collection.

Nearly 65 million Americans have experienced a recent episode of back pain, and up to 84% of adults have had low back pain at some time in their lives. For many individuals, the pain is episodic, but it can become chronic and often debilitating for others. Primary care doctors are not trained to diagnose and treat complex back and neck pain. Where does the patient turn? A chiropractor? A physical therapist? A spine surgeon? A pain clinic? "I see patients with back pain every day," says Dr. Sam Schroerlucke, a spine surgery specialist at OrthoSouth. "Most of them won't ever need surgery. Many of them need a combination of treatments like appropriate non-addictive medications and physical therapy, and sometimes a chiropractor or injections. The problem was there was not a single place where the patient could access the whole range of options, so they had to make a bunch of different appointments at different times and places, and most people do not have time for that. That's why we started Crosstown. We are your one-stop shop for chronic back and neck pain." OrthoSouth - Crosstown, located in the renovated Sears Crosstown building in Midtown, is the only multidisciplinary pain management clinic in Tennessee. The main benefit of a multidisciplinary approach to back pain is bringing together a group of healthcare professionals from different fields to determine a patient's best treatment plan and increase their chances of returning to a pain-free life. "Our treatment plan begins with understanding how the individual developed pain and what treatment plans have historically failed. We then

Chiropractor Dr. Jennifer James

perform a comprehensive musculoskeletal evaluation to determine if any other unaddressed causes of pain exist," says Leland Berkwits, Crosstown's medical director and board-certified pain specialist. “Crosstown’s multidisciplinary approach allows for different perspectives as we strive to treat the patient’s pain,” says Berkwits. Chronic pain conditions often don't show up on X-Rays or other imaging tools or don't show up where the patient feels the pain. Often, patients have seen several different types of providers and tried many treatments before landing at Crosstown. The multidisciplinary approach to pain management fosters communication among the providers. Chiropractors, physical therapists, pain specialists and orthopedic surgeons weigh in on treatment plans to provide solutions tailored to each patient's unique needs. In addition, Crosstown has a state-ofthe-art procedure suite that allows Dr. Berkwits to use X-ray-guided procedures to pinpoint and often treat the specific source of the pain. For patients who have had previous spinal surgery and persistent back, leg or neck pain, Crosstown provides spinal cord stimulation that involves passing wires into the spine and connecting them to a computer that blocks pain signals and provides significant pain relief. After evaluation, if it is determined that a patient would benefit from surgery, Crosstown's affiliation with OrthoSouth provides patients access to dozens of skilled surgeons and seamless referrals and scheduling. "Sometimes it turns out that a bad hip or knee is causing the patient to limp, which aggravates their back. Or maybe a shoulder problem is making their neck hurt", says Dr. Schroerlucke. "Lee Berkwits and his team are great at figuring all that out." In addition to Drs. Berkwits and Schroerlucke, the Crosstown team includes Physical Therapists Cory Heinkel and Nancy Hickman, Chiropractor Dr. Jennifer James, Physician Assistant TJ Fisher and Nurse Practitioner Angela Marshall.

NOVICK CARDIAC ALLIANCE ARTICLE BY NINA ROSSI

COURAGEOUSLY BRINGING SUSTAINABLE HEALTHCARE SOLUTIONS TO CHILDREN WITH CARDIAC DISEASES IN LOW AND MIDDLEINCOME COUNTRIES

The Memphis-based Novick Cardiac Alliance (NCA) was created in 2014 by Dr. William Novick who believes that every child born with heart disease should have access to the care they need to live a long and healthy life. Dr. Novick's important work impacts some of the 1.3 million children born around the world with heart defects yearly, regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion. In addition to life-saving surgeries, his team aims to improve local healthcare providers' skills, knowledge, technology and experience in countries without access to pediatric care. Just this year, Dr. Novick and his team visited Iraq, Ukraine, and the Democratic Republic of Congo and performed extraordinary surgeries, such as the one they did in Lebanon for a little girl named Sham. Sham, diagnosed with a life-threatening cardiac illness, recovered quickly and happily, thanks to the cardiac alliance. Dr. Novick and his team gave Sham a teddy bear for her bravery, as they do for all the brave children they perform surgeries on. These gifts are made possible through the NCA's Adopt-A-Teddy Bear program. To learn more about supporting this important medical mission financially or by becoming a volunteer on the alliance medical team, visit Cardiac-Alliance.org.

Solutions Medical will welcome customers in a new, larger location at 7465 Poplar Avenue in Germantown on January 1, 2023.

A whole-person approach with functional medicine

SOLUTIONS MEDICAL ARTICLE BY CHRISTIAN OWEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY UDAY SRIPATHI

Solutions Medical Center’s concept includes a functional medicine clinic, a modern aesthetics center, an IV Micronutrient treatment room, nutrition and health coaching and a new compounding pharmacy. Kate Gassaway, RN, MSN, APRN-BC, is the founder and CEO. Her whole-person focus on health, wellness, nutrition, mental health and aesthetics has a vast, devoted clientele, such that Solutions Medical will welcome customers in a new, larger location on January 1. Their doors originally opened on Valentine’s Day, 2008, which marks this February as their 15th year. “We have loved being in Collierville but couldn’t find a space that accommodated our growing needs, so we looked around and found a fabulous space with the help of Joe Jarratt and Robert Fogelman at Twin Bridges Investments. Ever since Kate was a little girl, she dreamt of having a clinic that made people look and feel better. She even wrote a paper about it in the sixth grade. Solutions Medical is the realization of that goal, and her lifelong study, research and practice led her to the practice of functional medicine.

“People should stop covering up their symptoms and never feeling like their best selves,” Kate asserts. She explains that conventional medicine focuses on treating symptoms. “For instance, if you see a conventional healthcare provider for depression, you may be prescribed an anti-depressant. If you have chronic pain, the doctor may prescribe pain-relieving medicine.” Alternatively, functional medicine aims to find the root cause of a health problem versus focusing on one or two symptoms. Kate’s outlook is an admirable one to follow into the new year. If you want to get healthier, lose weight, sleep better, reduce pain, or address any other resolutions you set, Solutions Medical’s first step is to understand how your body works. Knowing how and where to investigate issues, knowing what to look for, recognizing the significance of what is found, and creating a plan of action to reverse and correct the cause of the health issue make up Kate’s primary prescription for achieving a better quality of life. As she tells her patients, “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”

ZüpMed Lloyd Finks, M.D., and Shannon Finks, Pharm. D.

A modern healthcare facility with the feel of a small-town doctor’s office.

ZüpMed is white-glove patient care. Shannon and Lloyd Finks began planning the concept of ZüpMed in 2018. The day after they received their certificate of occupancy, the mayor shut the city down due to COVID. The original concept, a pairing of medicine with pharmaceuticals, was put on hold. But what appeared to be an unwelcome delay was ultimately a silver lining. ZüpMed became the COVID testing site for thousands of people. Shannon says COVID provided the “best open house we could never have paid for” by getting customers in the door.

In ZüpMed’s relaxed, spa-like setting, there are always fresh flowers on display, and patients are greeted by a staff member who is happy to see and help them.

Post-COVID, they have spent more time on ZüpMed’s initial mission, founded mainly on the couple’s list of grievances related to visiting doctors’ offices. ZüpMed is for busy people who don’t like to wait, don’t like to answer the same questions several times, and want providers to care about their well-being genuinely. The term concierge medicine is not brand new, but this clinic’s definition is slightly different. “Concierge medicine practices typically require an annual retainer,” but, they describe, ZüpMed’s concierge approach is unique in that they offer the

same services to both members and guests alike. They don’t process insurance there, but individuals can pay their ZüpMed bills and then file with their insurance companies for coverage on the backend. Shannon says patients routinely do this with success. The Finks envision ZüpMed as a modern healthcare facility with the feel of a small-town doctor’s office. This combination is a natural fit for Lloyd Finks, M.D., who worked as a senior living and nursing home administrator before attending Cornell University’s hospitality program. Later, he pursued the study of medicine at CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / R I V E R C I T Y

St. George’s University School. He then moved to Memphis and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Methodist University Hospital. Lloyd and four others formed Methodist’s first inpatient Hospitalist division in 2004, and he was appointed as Divisional Medical Director for Methodist Affiliated Services in 2016. Shannon Finks, Pharm. D., is a professor of clinical pharmacy and translational science at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. She is board certified in pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and cardiology (BCCP). She has received prestigious awards, including the Most Influential Professor Award from the UT College of Pharmacy. At ZüpMed, Shannon oversees an on-site pharmacy and clinical pharmacist. This helps ensure patients receive the safest, most effective and timely medications at an affordable price. ZüpMed also incorporates a modern approach to understanding prescription drugs with their pharmacogenomic service, which analyzes patients’ medications. They look at many factors, including risk genes and nutritional deficiency related to prescribed drugs. Alternatively, research shows that in a typical clinic visit, doctors spend less than 40 seconds discussing a medicine prescribed during that visit. Both Shannon and Lloyd live life fully. When they are not “doctoring,” the Finks play in a jazz trio! Lloyd says he has had nine “career lives” ranging from hospitality to radio talk show host to Special Olympics organizer, all of which, he points out, inform his current role at ZüpMed. Shannon has been fine-tuning her ability to compassionately educate and instruct since childhood, as her mother was a professor. In ZüpMed’s relaxed, spa-like and even petfriendly setting, there are always fresh flowers on display. Patients are greeted by a staff member who is happy to see and help them, which is rare in today’s customer service atmosphere. As one Google review about ZüpMed states, “I never expected to be writing a review about how much I enjoy going to the doctor, but there it is. I love it because it’s the very best kind of self-care: protecting my health and feeling pampered all at once.”

CLEAN CLEANING

54

H OW TO | HEA LTH + WEL LNE S S

It's that time of year to "start fresh." Starting fresh can mean many different things: Cleaning out a cluttered closet, creating new habits, initiating a diet/health plan, or moving to a new city. One of the most impactful ways to start fresh is from within your home! Your home should be a haven for you and your loved ones. A clean home can positively impact your daily habits, leading to a healthier, sustainable and rewarding lifestyle. This January, we are making an effort to use more eco-friendly, all-natural cleaning products that are better for the environment and our human health. Unfortunately, many common household cleaners contain toxic chemicals that harm our health. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that 53 percent of standard household cleaning products contain ingredients harmful to the lungs, and about 22 percent contain chemicals reported to cause or worsen asthma (2022). Ingredient labels are mandatory for food, cosmetics and drugs but not cleaning products, making it harder for consumers to know which products may be harmful (EWG, 2022). However, some companies make it easier

to know which products are better for our health and create less home waste. Think Dirty is an app that allows consumers to identify toxic ingredients by scanning the product's barcode. Once scanned, the app will indicate if most ingredients are toxic or non-toxic, making our decision-making process smoother. Consumers can also use this app for beauty products! Many companies make using natural products for a non-toxic home more manageable and affordable. Grove Collaborative is an online delivery company that provides in-depth research about hidden ingredients so you can determine what is cleanest for your home. You can customize your cart with sustainable products delivered right to your door on your time. Not one to partake in the monthly delivery subscriptions? Sprouts Farmers Market is a Memphis-area, one-stop shop for all-natural cleaning brands, such as Mrs. Meyer’s, Sprouts brand, Seventh Generation, and Zum Clean. Another great spot around the corner that carries a substantial selection of sustainable cleaning products (and some of the best coffee in town) is The Fresh Market. As consumers, we can do our part to make our homes and our environment cleaner. We can start by choosing non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning products made by trusted brands over the highly chemical, plastic-packaged, toxic products we use because we are familiar with them. These minor adjustments may not seem like they would make a difference, but small adjustments turn into habits that eventually shape our lives. So, what better time to "start fresh" and "live fresh" with the products in your home than the new year?
