My Christmas wish in 2023 addresses that gift we all choose or decline to receive: the present. Be it digital distractions, an overbooked social calendar or the frenzied errands filling our next few weeks, join me in seeking greater discernment and appreciation for present moments this season. Don’t let capturing life cause us to miss it. Do take time to take some photos because those pictures will be the cues for meaningful reminiscence. However, if recording still shots and videos for future use and enjoyment causes us to inordinately forego the present, shouldn’t we reconsider? Fulfilling trends and traditions. Is this always truly fulfilling? Everyone has a steady mind loop of how various occasions should look. Anyone with a television, a mailbox, an email or a social media feed is highly aware of other people’s renditions of the holidays. We all have our preconceived ideas of how the holidays should play out, be it a goal to replicate what made the season feel magical in our youth or a desire to be everywhere and on trend each year. While aspiring to do it all often feels admirable, being selective is smart. The saying that “just because you can doesn’t mean you should” applies. Perfect imperfections. Things probably won’t happen according to plan, right? And the holidays can get messy. But who among us hasn’t experienced well-made plans gone awry and unforeseen obstacles during Christmases past, only to admit afterwards that all turned out better (or at least more memorable) in the end? Cheers to a renewed holiday commitment to receive the present with focus, peace and joy Merry Christmas!

Love and Joy Reside A Winter Wonderland in East Memphis

The Christmas decorations are enhanced by stunning lighting fixtures.

In East Memphis, a Christmas miracle unfolds each year, blending tradition, creativity, love and a bit of technical engineering. Jim King and Everett Lawson transform their home into a holiday wonderland, dedicating nearly 500 hours of work to the interior and 100 hours to the exterior, spreading Christmas cheer throughout their beautiful home and in the hearts of friends and family lucky enough to experience the splendor. This year, the couple started decorating on April 1, working eight hours a day, sometimes longer. They completed most of the decorating by September 15 in anticipation of Jim's 70th birthday party in October. CONTINUED >

Every year, the decorations center around a unique theme, ranging from Rockefeller Center to a merry Harry Potter Christmas. Jim and Everett draw inspiration from old movies and White House Christmas specials, brainstorming together until a captivating theme emerges. For 2023, their theme is a take on the traditional Nutcracker Christmas, featuring lifesized nutcrackers in a quaint village setting. One of the standout features of their decorations is the stunning backdrops. Using an artificial intelligence art generator, Everett carefully selects and customizes mesmerizing backdrops to complement their chosen theme. "We looked through

thousands of options before choosing," Jim recalls. These backdrops are then meticulously printed and transformed into breathtaking scenes that adorn their walls. The roots of this annual Christmas spectacular trace back over five decades, inspired by Jim's first partner, who had never celebrated Christmas. They started with a simple white spruce tree adorned with blue ornaments and ribbon, infusing their unique touch into the festive tradition. Nine years ago, the couple moved into their current home, reawakening and expanding their Christmas decorating tradition arriving at its present grandeur. CONTINUED >

He shares his ideas with Everett, who brings them to life with his own creative and technical expertise. Unique features like the bedroom arch, dining room trees on raised stands and a hydraulic lift platform for the great room's tree, showcase their unwavering dedication to perfection. Even the tree stands are concealed to ensure a seamless and breathtaking presentation. Jim and Everett's Christmas decorations embody love, tradition and the season's joy. Their artistic collaboration and commitment to craft have once again transformed their home into a magical winter wonderland. As we usher in the holidays, we are reminded that the true essence of Christmas is found in the details, each symbolic of love, joy and celebration. Jim and Everett's magical holiday décor is a testament to these timeless truths.

When it comes to our vibrant and ever-evolving River City, there is always room for something new and unique, something that stands out and leaves a lasting impression. Enter: The Liquor Cabinet, a mobile cocktail bar changing the game for event services in Memphis. Founded by Brooks Lowrance and Tony Nguyen, The Liquor Cabinet is the solution for those who want their events to be truly unforgettable. The concept of The Liquor Cabinet began to take shape when Brooks, a former kitchen pro who switched to bartending, wanted to venture into something new and untapped. After years of honing his craft behind the bar, the idea of a mobile cocktail bar on wheels was conceived. His mother's wish for him to create a "bar on wheels" sparked the idea, and after thorough research to ensure the legality and feasibility, The Liquor Cabinet was born. So, why craft cocktails on wheels? Tony, who brings extensive bar experience to the business as well, explains, "I was trained to make craft cocktails from scratch. I realized that other types of bars didn't prioritize fresh ingredients. Everything was made with store-bought mixes and juices. I knew that I could bring something different to the bartending service industry by offering craft cocktails you could only find at high-end restaurants, delivered right to your door." Brooks and Tony make the perfect team. Tony manages the beverage program with his creativity and experience, while Brooks, who has bartended alongside Tony for several years, brings dedication and hard work to the mix. Together they recognized a gap in the Memphis market that The Liquor Cabinet could fill. The journey of starting a business is never without its ups and downs. Brooks and Tony recount some of their highs and lows, with Brooks sharing, "The starting part always has its lows, whether it's being picky with the logo or unexpected setbacks. When we bought the vintage trailer, it needed extensive restoration. Every challenge was a learning experience, and the highs, like seeing it painted and logoed, made it all worthwhile."

Brooks mentions how the rise of home gatherings post-COVID influenced their vision: "We wanted to provide a memorable experience for our clients while reducing food waste. Memphis is growing rapidly, and we want to be a part of that growth to support the city."

Doesn't receiving a well-wrapped gift make it that much sweeter? Seeing a stack of thoughtfully packaged presents underneath a Christmas tree warms our hearts most-thoroughly. Vanessa West, owner of Avenue Wrapping in Chickasaw Oaks Plaza, has turned her love for wrapping gifts into a successful business. On her passion-project, she remarks, "I've always loved to wrap gifts, but it wasn't as precise as it is now. Once people started asking me to do it more, I knew I needed to give them a professional product, so I took some gift-wrapping courses. I'm not a halfhearted person; when I do something, I want to do it well."

When she moved to Memphis, Vanessa began offering wrapping services to her neighbors, unknowingly planting the seed of her business. She explains, "I came by way of this naturally; when I posted to Next Door for gift wrapping services, I had a big response that trickled over after the holidays and the requests kept coming." Her dream to open a shop began long ago. "I remember seeing run-down buildings or interesting spaces and always thinking that'd be the perfect little space for a shop. It's been a dream in my back pocket for so long that I never thought of acting on it until recently." Finally, in November of 2022, Avenue Wrapping became a reality. Before securing her space in Chickasaw Oaks Village, Vanessa operated her wrapping business from home, eventually outgrowing her modest guest room. Avenue Wrapping is filled with wrapping paper sheets, greeting cards, children's toys and gifts. "One of my favorite things about wrapping is using artist-designed papers, so I want to share that with others." While Avenue Wrapping's storefront has expanded Vanessa's offerings, personalized, high-quality wrapping remains her priority. When clients bring in gifts or have Vanessa come to their home to wrap presents, she asks a series of questions to create a unique result. "First, I always ask what the occasion is. are or if they have a photo of the invitation for me to gauge the couple's style. Then I ask them to describe the recipient's personality." These initial questions help her tailor the presentation. Vanessa ensures that the gifts will be suitably wrapped and delivered on time. Reflecting on her first year in business, Vanessa shares, As a new business, I think you start with many ideas, and eventually those get narrowed down or changed. We have an upstairs in our shop, which I thought would be a perfect spot for artists and other creatives to host workshops. Since so much of what I do starts with connection, this felt like a perfect thing to try. "I notice the best inspiration comes when I'm feeling joyful or hopeful." And her joy is evident in every ribbon she ties and every bow she carefully crafts, making Avenue Wrapping more than just a store—it's a heartfelt expression of Vanessa's specific passion for making moments of giving extra special.

STEP ONE: GO GREEN Begin with a base of greenery, including wreaths and garland that can be live or artificial. Today, there are many good artificial options that can be made to look real and last for several seasons. A eucalyptus wreath purchased from Hobby Lobby lasts several years and can be very versatile – hang it on your door or add a hurricane candle in the middle to make a table decoration. Purchase a thin version of artificial garland from Michael's to allow lots of room for adding your own flowers and accessories. Use the extra trimmings from your Christmas tree to add to the artificial greenery for an extra-fluffy, layered final product. Finally, take the fresh evergreen boughs and twist the faux around them until they hold.

STEP TWO: LOVE ORGANIC Add in locally sourced organic items, including magnolia leaves, twigs, hydrangeas, cedar, nandina and berries. Harvest the hydrangeas before they have turned brown so that they will retain their color. Also, keep your eyes peeled for special items on your travels, such as the extra-large and beautiful pine cones that Heather brought home from a recent trip to Florida.

STEP THREE: ADD YOUR FRUITS AND VEGGIES Consider using brightly colored fruits and vegetables in your arrangements like apples, oranges, artichokes, pomegranates, cranberries and cloves. To create dried oranges, slice them and bake at 200 degrees for five hours on a cookie sheet, flipping over once or twice during the process. Decorate whole oranges with cloves placed in a pattern like a cross or someone’s initials. Both citrus options add interest and they will have your home smelling great!

STEP FOUR: ACCESSORIZE AND HAVE FUN Spray paint your twigs, blooms, pine cones, berries and any fun accessories you want to add to your greenery. This is especially useful if you are late in collecting your flowers that may have begun to turn brown. Spray painting will preserve your blooms and keep them from curling, drooping or falling off. Plus, it will add an unexpected pop of color that may not be found naturally in your yard. CONTINUED >

Elizabeth and Heather have years of floral design experience between them, including making all arrangements for the TV show Young Rock, a series documenting the life of Dwayne Johnson filmed exclusively in Memphis. The sets they worked their magic on included the Woodruff-Fontaine House, the Peabody Ballroom, a recreation of Dwayne Johnson’s wedding at the Cadre Building and a set completely decorated for Christmas. Heather says, “My love of entertaining, tablescapes and floral design came from my mother, Hetta Heath, and growing up in Houston, Texas.” After owning and running a successful floral business in Aspen, Colorado, Heather transplanted to Memphis after marrying Henry. “I care about Memphis and have been involved since day one.” A few weeks after moving here that November, I noticed there were no holiday lights. We called the Center City Commission, and they asked if I wanted to lead the effort with their full backing. Within a few days we had a big chunk of downtown Memphis full of twinkly lights. Coming from a big city where such decisions would take months and multiple levels of red tape, it was amazing to be in a city that welcomed my ideas!” Elizabeth, a native Memphian, grew up in a family where everyone had at least a few hobbies. “My father was an architect and made furniture. My mother sewed, gardened and made floral designs using beautiful flowers she grew at home. My wonderful brother, Brussel, has an incredible bonsai nursery.” Elizabeth is a trained speech pathologist, teaches Sunday school, makes floral arrangements for the home bound at church and occasionally for church services. Elizabeth and Heather share a deep love of Memphis and incredible floral design expertise in offering ways to make decorating your home easy, affordable and, of course, beautiful. Repurposing items and making do with what you have is a fun part of the process.

I have many childhood memories of sitting by the campfire with my family telling stories, gazing at the stars, and roasting marshmallows. This year, take your s’mores to a whole new level with this S’mores Dessert Board! They are so easy and fun to make! Similar to a Charcuterie Board, a S’mores Dessert Board is beautifully decorated and full of everything you need to make the perfect s’mores! Some of my favorite things to include in a s’mores are either peanut butter or a mint chocolate candy!

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
