LIFESTYLE LETTER
June: Gents
June 2022 PUBLISHER

Gentlemen of the River City, we salute you for the role you play in our community. Whether you are overseeing a local business, coaching a sports team, teaching future generations, sharing artistic talents, making time for a nonprofit you love, or working hard to take care of your family, we celebrate the variety and dedication of your efforts. In this issue, we recognize a selection of men who richly express the character of Memphis through inspiration, instruction and leadership. Many of the stories told feature individuals who have moved here from other states and countries. We believe telling their stories offers an expansive perspective of the River City. Enjoy these interviews and more as we officially welcome summertime 2022. Fathers, yours is the holiday we focus on in June. While some dads are easy to please when gift time comes around, it is often hard to know what to give on this important occasion. Why not avoid unwrapping too many irrelevant gestures of kindness – another tie, a techy item that will never be used, more barbecue tools to go with the ones you received last year – by leaving some hints around the house for your family to know just what you’d like for Father’s Day. If you find any ideas in this issue, you can always dog-ear the page and leave it in the family room or kitchen! Guys, you are in the spotlight this month! Know that you are appreciated for the resilient strength you bring to daily endeavors, notable accomplishments and the quality time you spend with family and friends.

WELCOME TO THE GARDEN, DANIEL GROSE

TAKING MBG TO NEW HEIGHTS DANIEL GROSE “People are looking for a place to experience nature where they live,” says Daniel Grose, new Director of Horticulture at the Memphis Botanic Garden (MBG), “and it is such a privilege to be able to provide that through the Garden!” Daniel began his tenure as Director at MBG on May 1, at which time Rick Pudwell, who served in the position for 27 years, initiated his transition to Director of Horticulture – Emeritus until his retirement in September. Daniel is a resident of Eads, Tennessee, and has been the owner/operator of Set Apart Landscaping since 2009. He is a graduate of Evangelical Christian School (ECS) and attended the University of Memphis. In the spirit of connecting Memphians with nature where they live, Daniel encourages people to enjoy the MBG often. Engaging outdoor activities such as feeding koi in the Japanese Garden, finding a retreat in the woodland areas or taking the kids to My Big Backyard make the MBG a playground for all ages.
“We are thrilled to welcome Daniel to our team and look forward to his passion for landscape design and horticulture, especially as it pertains to native plants and ecologically minded landscapes that he will bring to our Garden,” says Michael D. Allen, MBG Executive Director. “Over the past few years, even through the pandemic, we have invested in the modernization of our Garden’s buildings and grounds, strengthened our financial position, and begun to reinvest in our horticulture operations. Daniel’s arrival will allow us to take our gardens and grounds to new heights, building upon Rick Pudwell’s efforts,” Michael explains. Daniel asserts that he is grateful for this opportunity, adding, “I walked into a team of people who are so energetic and deeply passionate about what they do. It is both humbling and inspiring to lead a group like this, and I cannot wait for the people of Memphis to experience the things we have in store!”

Behind the Brew The Bartosch Brothers of Wiseacre Brewery ARTICLE BY AMY BIRDSONG GOLDEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY IZABELLA SANDOVAL, BELLLA PHOTOGRAPHY “Psychedelic Pilgrim,” declares Kellan Bartosch. “And Davin says, Adjective Animal.” Yes, both are beers on the roster of Wiseacre, the Memphis craft brewery the two brothers founded in 2013. But they are also fictitious band names that either would select, if pressed. After all, the artwork (featured on their cans) looks more like a collection of killer album covers. Their beers are all astutely named with a serving of ingenuity and often wit. But most importantly they make lagers and ales that taste like lagers and ales. Really good ones. Opening a brewery was a dream. Perhaps it was first manifested in high school when they had the chance

to tour the Sam Adams Brewery in the late 90s. The chance was only made possible by stealing the rental car while their father was in meetings for then, Federal Express, in Boston. Both brothers credit their father for always telling them to “find the joy in learning.” Kellan and Davin Bartosch have made over 250 different beers in their time at Wiseacre. They outgrew their first operation on Broad Avenue in just three years. It’s still open and now a thinktank or “drink tank” where they can experiment with new flavors and smaller runs. Their second production facility and taproom opened in 2020. The brothers built the

40,000-square-foot, downtown location in the South Main District on a lot that had been empty for decades. “The idea to make it our life’s work was Kellan’s, not mine,” says Davin, older brother. Davin has always had a healthy dose of skepticism, he adds. “I’m also really cheap. I figured out that I could make a case of beer cheaper than I could buy it,” explaining his collegiate home brewing origins freshman year of college. “I knew he had greatness in him. Anytime he tried something he loved - from cooking camp in 4th grade to chess, and beer – he had such a crazy focus.” Davin wasn’t going to be happy in any sort of traditional desk job says Kellan. “And then I realized I wasn’t either,” he adds. So the idea was planted; Davin would brew and Kellan would handle most everything else. First, they focused on getting as much real-world experience in their respective fields. The brothers spent almost ten years of education, training, learning, industry research and a lot of behind-the-scenes grunt work. They lived all over the country and in Europe for Davin, who studied in Germany, France, Czech Republic, and Austria. Because, as he explains, “Passion does not equal ability.” They picked their hometown, Memphis, because, well – they really love Memphis. And they thought the town was ready to support a craft brewery. The Memphis water certainly helps. Our water is really soft and mineral-free which makes for a better tasting lager, thanks to the Memphis Sand aquifer and the artesian well it forms. “We knew how to make good beer. But having a growing business has been the hardest thing we’ve ever had to figure out,” Kellan explains.

H AP PY H OU R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
“Our saving grace is that we respond to being brothers before the business. We were a family before we were a brewery.”
The brothers claim they don’t speak in code, but definitely know how to communicate. There aren’t dueling egos. “We are able to get through anything and move forward, even if we have to use bad words,” says Kellan. “Our saving grace is that we respond to being brothers before the business. We were a family before we were a brewery,” adds Davin. And they try to emulate a similar vibe for their employees and partners. It starts top down with their company culture. BEEFY is not a new name for their latest Pale Ale. It’s an acronym for their core values: Bliss, Education, Excellence, Folks, and Yourself. Ask them about it over a beer. wiseacrebrew.com

“From day one, my goal was to educate.”
David Lusk Founder the David Lusk Gallery A Missouri native and graduate of Rhodes College, David Lusk fell in love with Memphis riding his bike about town as a student and never looked back. “There was art everywhere,” he recalls, and he was inspired to build on that tradition. Lusk opened his first gallery in 1995 in Memphis. Since then, he has launched some of the finest regional artists, including Maysey Craddock, Greely Myatt and Tad Lauritzen Wright. With a dedicated client base in Memphis and Nashville, Lusk continues to put a lot of effort into promoting his artists locally and beyond, taking their work to art fairs across the country. Lusk attributes the depth of talent in the River City area to the
great institutions like the Memphis College of Art, Rhodes and the University of Memphis as well as “something about the big rolling river.” The unique climate nurtures creativity and “not just landscapes,” he insists. He is always looking for something original and interesting and regularly hosts exhibitions of alluring art in a variety of mediums and concepts. He is inspired by educating and stretching clients’ art sensibilities. “It’s about acceptance of art and growing with it and living with it,” he says. David Lusk raised his two girls in Memphis and his wife, Carissa Hussong, also an art lover and promoter is the Director of the National Ornamental Metal Museum. CONTINUED >

He and his wife raised three children in Memphis and while he has done “everything there is to do in tennis” he still aspires to bring the sport to underserved communities in the future.

Brad Sewell Head of School at Presbyterian Day School
The 13th Head of PDS, Brad Sewell, most recently of Houston, Texas, brings a vast amount of experience in education and social work as well as a master’s degree in philosophy that informs his leadership. Working closely with the PDS Board, he continues to provide the highest level of academics and character building for boys from two years old to 6th grade but is also thinking long term, leveraging PDS’ international reputation for excellent, boys’ education. “We want to keep building on the strong tradition of our alumni doing great things for the city of Memphis,” says Sewell. One of his
first initiatives is the Cultural Expeditions Program, which builds travel and real-life experience into the boys’ curriculum, preparing them to be global citizens while instilling the desire to give back to their own community. “We have the benefit of spending some of the best years and some of the most formative years helping set values and establishing what a boy will care about,” he adds. Sewell relocated to Memphis in 2021 with his wife and two young sons and has embraced the River City. “Memphis is the most sociable city,” says Sewell, “a proper Southern town.” CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Greg Baudoin GRACIOUSLY SHARING HIS PASSION FOR ART, DESIGN AND GIVING BACK WITH THE RIVER CITY
ARTICLE BY JEANNIE TABOR PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH BELL,
In the Memphis community, Greg Baudoin is synonymous with beautiful interiors and satisfied clients. When asked about his specialty, Greg says, “Every project is unique because every client is unique. Creating well-edited interiors that reflect each client’s personality and style keeps the job both challenging and rewarding. Having a happy client at the end of a project is the best part.” Greg mentioned a particularly satisfying project in which he helped a client move from a grand, historic Midtown home to a repurposed riverfront warehouse, producing a complete transformation in terms of architectural and interior style. As passionate as Greg is about interior design, he is equally passionate about supporting the Memphis arts community and broadening access to interior design. According to Elizabeth Rouse, President and CEO of ArtsMemphis, Greg has raised $1.4

million and engaged hundreds of new arts supporters through his involvement in fundraisers such as ARTAFACTOR, ArtsMemphis Culinary Series, and the founding of the very successful Art by Design event. Elizabeth says, “Greg’s leadership, generosity, and commitment to growing arts support through innovative, fun and unique experiences continues to be transformative for ArtsMemphis.” In addition to ArtsMemphis, Greg is deeply involved in the Decorative Arts Trust, and the Carpenter Art Garden. Greg says, “I feel it is important to support the arts across their lifecycle, from early childhood exposure and education, to promotion and funding, and finally to preservation and appreciation.” This wholistic approach to supporting the arts is what inspired Greg to create Art by Design, an annual curated series of events highlighting Memphis’ interior design community and promoting the city’s artists and arts organizations. The 2019 Art by Design event garnered over 1600 attendees and approximately 300 new donors to ArtsMemphis. This series included multiple levels of event access, from a VIP cocktail party to

educational speakers, and free admission to curated interior design vignettes. Greg’s intent was to “highlight all of the facets of our lives impacted by artists and designers across multiple disciplines, including music, culinary arts, fashion, landscape design, visual arts, and floral design.” Art by Design is back this year, after cancellations due to Covid, and will be held in late summer. Stay tuned for more! Greg’s path to interior design was not linear. In college, he began studying architecture but graduated with a business degree. He then joined the ranks of corporate America as a process designer, where he was focused on maximizing efficiency in systems. This goal ultimately necessitated eliminating his own job - but not before taking on his first interior design project, when he was asked to decorate the training room. In 2002 he launched his interior design career. “When I reflect on the past twenty years in interior design, I am as proud of the meaningful relationships I’ve built as I am the spaces created through them. My philanthropic work and the time I devote to the causes and organizations for which I am passionate are a natural extension of that.”

East Memphis At Home with Wine Importer Billy Weiss
Billy Weiss’ window to the world is an engaging view influenced by European lifestyles and landscapes he well knows after 26 years in the wine industry. His company, North Berkeley Imports, specializes in French and Italian wines and has been recognized as “Importer of the Year” twice by Wine & Spirits magazine. Billy’s vibrant career, devotion to family and mastery of entertaining visibly influenced the design of a Memphis home that he and his wife, Jean, have thoughtfully renovated. Jean and Billy selected this home for its classic charm. Custom millwork and traditional features add remarkable character.

One of the couple’s favorite objects is a range made by Lacanache, a French brand. Billy loves that the range is not unduly modern.
European details reflect Billy’s thrice-yearly business trips to France and Italy. In 2017, the couple moved in and made a plan to further develop the property with their large family in mind. When everyone is home, it is a joyful family of eight. The first room addressed was the kitchen, where practicality and durability are paramount. Both Jean and Billy enjoy entertaining. Jean prefers cooking for smaller groups. Billy, because his career takes him to entertainment venues worldwide, can skillfully manage the menu for a larger crowd. He routinely interacts with restauranteurs in the states and abroad. Billy recollects, “Lots of times when I’m in Europe, I’ll say, ‘Hey, that’s really cool. How do you do that?’ And then, I come back home and try it.” One of the couple’s favorite objects is a range made by Lacanache, a French brand. Billy loves that the range is not unduly modern. “We wanted something different,” he explains, adding that this stove was less expensive but has more BTUs than other high-end brands. “What we really like about it is there are no computers, there are no timers, it’s just valves and gas. Therefore, it’s not going to break … and it looks good.” Soapstone counters in the kitchen are aesthetically functional. Wooden floors with decorative tile inserts, another European addition to their kitchen area, are similar to floors commonly seen in countries Billy visits. Phase two, a screened porch, preserves the theme of hospitality. With vaulted ceilings and stately furnishings, it is an outdoor living space that reflects the color and texture of their main home. The centerpiece of the room is a massive cooking fireplace, ordered through Bishop Hearth & Home from an Icelandic company, Isokern. The fireplace was uniquely made using volcanic pumice. Here, Billy loves to cook steak, chicken and his signature leg of lamb marinated in a rosemary vinaigrette.

Above the fireplace, a wooden sign bears the name of Billy’s first store in Jackson, Wyoming, where his wine journey began. While Billy was on a work trip, Jean found and repaired the sign to hang above the fireplace - a surprise for Billy when he returned. Another focal point of this room is a wooden coffee table made from an antique riddling rack. The table was crafted by Billy’s brother-in-law, Brandon Ryan, a building contractor in Jackson. Riddling racks were once used during a process that encouraged yeast in champagne to rise to the neck of the bottle so it could be removed before corking. Adding to the gracious feel of the porch is an oversized swing perfect for an afternoon nap or relaxed seating. Jean and Billy often share daily conversations on the porch. Paired with a glass of wine alongside family dogs Millie and Claire it is a scene that is pleasantly familiar now that renovations are complete. In keeping with the personalities of its unassuming and invariably polite owners, this home now allows Jean and Billy to entertain comfortably and easily in a place where everyone feels welcome, whether they live here or are visiting for the first time.

Hewlett & Dunn Boot and Jean Co. Planning a family vacation out west? Or his birthday at Hernando’s Hideway? He’ll need some custom boots, and we know the best place in town. Possibilities are endless with countless skins, colors and designs. Charles Hall has worked at Hewlett & Dunn since 1997. He and wife, Laura, became sole proprietors in 2020. After you finish your boot scheme, all the way down to the “toe bug” stitching, make sure you pick up a shirt by Kimes, a straw cowboy hat (you’ll learn why that is seasonal) and a good new pair of work - or play - pants. And they carry Duckhead. Just like he wore in college. Go visit them on the Collierville Square.

@M K . SKINCO
MK Skincare Don’t let your husband use bar soap as a facial product. Skip ahead and fill his medicine cabinet with MK Skincare. Locals Maria Miller and Kate Umsted have a cult following. Having practiced medical aesthetics for over 34 years combined, they saw a few holes in the marketplace. Launched in 2020, the products are easy to use, cleanly packaged and not fussy. We use the Daily Glow and Power Glow pads. The Daily Hydration is light and layers well with their spf product, Protect Your Investment. Ladies, book a facial with them at The Well@Pavo (owned by Maria). Figure out which Vitamin C product works with your skin type (and take care of Father’s Day too)!
Fern at La Grange Take the father in your life for a drive to La Grange, Tennessee. The entire town is on the historical register. You’ll be sure to spend time in Fern at La Grange, a specialty shop for house and field. Owner Allison Treadwell is a Memphis transplant and curates the shop’s American and English antiques with Alice Renovich. We love these solid brass belt buckles, cast from a wax carving for a special dad. For his office, we suggest their vintage gallery rugs or woven shades for his desk lamp. Don’t miss the sportsman’s line Tom Beckbe and even some treasures from Paris.

Nature’s Balance Does your father always claim that he’s “gotta guy” for that? Alex Boggan created Nature’s Balance in 2017 after an 18-year run in the landscaping business. You won’t find his name on a truck down Poplar; Alex is hard to find and all referral based. Start with his mosquito service. He uses essential oils in the spray but uses traps for larvae, breaking the life cycle in your yard. Nature’s Balance doesn’t mow or plant - but we love his ornamental tree, lawn, turf and bed maintenance.
Home Place Pastures The Bartlett family has been farming their land, just east of Como, Mississippi, for over 150 years. In 2014, fifth-generation siblings re-invented the family homestead. They are “committed to the ethical treatment of their animals, stewardship of their land and the health of their community.” Their grass-fed cattle roam and rotate in a pastoral dance regenerating the soil. Order a monthly box delivered to your dad in Memphis. They supply meat to most of our favorite Memphis restaurants. If he needs a field trip, plan a camping (or glamping) trip to the farm or join one of their many events like the Hill Country Boucherie and Blues picnic (returning this year on September 3).
