With this issue, we want the women in our River City to know that no matter your age or occupation, you are an important part of this community as a whole. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is truly influential and rewarding. Promoting and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is powerful. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. On the following pages are stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another: inspiring local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to their community. Read about your fellow River City women and maybe even make a new connection. If you’re interested in someone’s story, try reaching out on social media to learn even more! You never know what opportunities and partnerships could come from it.
Happy May, ladies. Thank you for all you do.

“Not one person thinks I am the owner when they first meet me on a job site,” says Jennifer Ransom, owner and president of The Ransomed Group, a general and specialty contractor in Memphis. But that doesn’t bother her. She is used to it, and sometimes it works to her advantage. “I have to prove myself because I am a unicorn in this industry,” Jennifer says. “I am never given the benefit of the doubt. I don’t just have to prove that I belong. I have to outperform. But I love what I do. And I know my work will resonate.” Jennifer became a Memphian, by way of Colorado, completing her undergraduate work at the University of Memphis and then taking the MCAT. She was headed to medical school when she made a pivot to healthcare management and hospital administration, completing graduate degrees at the University of Virginia and Harvard Business School. She consulted in healthcare for a bit, while making time to raise her young boys. Then she embarked on an unconventional career change. Something she had always wanted to do. Construction was a familiar path. Jennifer grew up on job sites with her father, a custom home builder in Colorado. After getting her general contracting license in 2016, she began working towards the commercial and industrial side of the business. Since then, her firm has completed recent projects for Gold Strike Casino, Renasant Convention Center, FedEx, IndigoAg and many others.

While working alongside the Army Corps of Engineers in 2020, she was tapped to apply for a federal program, an 8(a) designation. Her small business is able to partner with large federal contractors. It’s a training program that allows for joint ventures with existing contractors, leveraging business infrastructure and knowledge. It certainly does not ‘level the playing field,’ but instead is a robust training program for business development, education and access. “I don’t have to be an expert in everything. I just need the right people and relationships that are built on trust and integrity.” Jennifer was recently appointed by Governor Bill Lee to serve on the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance Board for Licensing Contractors. She serves as Chairman of the Board for the Tennessee Builders Education Foundation, a non-profit organization whose objective is to expose high school students and young adults to careers in the construction trades. Jennifer values her employees and partners the most. “It is such a blessing to be able to employ so many people and change the trajectory of people’s lives," she says. “As women, we are nurturers. We care.” While the projects, people and initiatives at the firm keep her consumed, she is ever focused on the future of the Ransomed Group. She heeds the advice of her business coach, “Don’t get so busy that you forget to work on your business, not just in your business.”
Jennifer Ransom, business owner and mother of two boys, makes it all work thanks to her secret power: multi-tasking.

BRINGING THE BEST OF THE SEA TO THE RIVER CITY Ted buys freshly caught fish at market on Tuesdays, drives to Memphis Tuesday night, and is open for business Wednesday morning. It doesn’t get much fresher!
22
O UR TOWN | FOOD + BEVE RAGE
PARADISE SEAFOOD Twenty-two years ago, Ted Perkins, a Gulf Shores native with close connections in the local seafood industry, was struck with a novel idea. With familial ties in our little corner of western Tennessee, he decided to share the bounty of coastal Alabama by selling fresh seafood to landlocked Memphians. He began by driving a truck full of fresh seafood from the Bayou Le Batre area all the way to Tipton County. He set up shop on the side of the road and sold his spoils to the locals. Today, Ted is a famed staple at the Collierville Agricenter and Memphis farmers’ markets. He and his son Dustin travel north every other week in fall, winter and spring, and every week in summer, to sell what is arguably the freshest seafood available in the River City. Business at the Paradise Seafood truck is simple: a folding table serves as a checkout counter (“cash or check only”) and whiteboards boast the day’s fresh catches. Chilean sea bass, ahi tuna, pompano, red snapper, scallops, shrimp and oysters are just some of the items you can expect to see in Ted’s refrigerators. You’re lucky if you visit (early enough!) on a day when his homemade gumbo, shrimp and corn soup or smoked tuna dip is on the menu. Ted’s loyal repeat customers serve as a testament to the premium quality of his offerings as well as to his long standing place within our farmers’ market community. As one customer has stated, “Going out to the Paradise Seafood truck has become a time-honored tradition for my wife and me. We’ve never been disappointed, and we encourage everyone who visits to arrive early enough to snag a crab cake. They are the best of the best.” Be sure to sign up for the newsletter and never miss out on the freshest catch! AParadiseSeafood.com

Playful, whimsical, cherished, adventurous, welcoming and warm describe homeowners Jennifer and Jack Sammons, and thanks to Designer Cameron Howell, their home is a perfect reflection of their personalities. In the 25 years since the Sammons have called this house in the heart of Hedgemoor home, they have added (tripled the square footage), renovated (some planned, some not so much) and reimagined spaces to fit their fluid lifestyle. They have successfully raised two children, launched several political careers and entertained throngs of family and friends within these walls. When discussing her approach to their recent kitchen renovation, Jennifer reflects that she was going through a particularly dark time while managing the care of her mother. "I wanted bright," Jennifer explains. The resulting seating area, where the business of the day is mapped out over coffee and debriefed over cocktails, is their daily dose of sunshine. While the days of fancy fundraisers have given way to impromptu margaritas and Bocce out back, fine china, crystal and sterling silver are daily wares in the Sammons home. "Every day is a special occasion now. Living life post-pandemic is so precious," Jennifer says. "Working with Jennifer and Jack is always a fun experience,” says Cameron who has worked with the couple for the better part of the last decade. “She wanted color when everyone else wanted beige, and she is never afraid to mix wild prints, bold hues and walk on the wild side." "We love to laugh!” Jennifer says. “It is all done with a wink and a nod."
Animals abound and unexpected elements greet you at every turn.
Comfort and function are paramount for Jennifer and Jack. But they certainly don't sacrifice style.

Five Inspiring Women Creating a Better Future for Memphis ARTICLE BY MARGARET LEDBETTER PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH BELL, SÉLAVIE PHOTOGRAPHY
What a challenge to narrow down a list of exceptional women in Memphis doing good work. So many gifted individuals are putting in the time and effort to make Memphis a better city through education, arts, entertainment, civic service, business, medicine and more. An abundance of talent and so very many natives of the River City bring home their education and experiences to make a difference in the city they love. In these interviews, I was determined to avoid questions about COVID-19. There was no avoiding it. A two-year pandemic has had a significant impact on how these women approach their work and lives. There were some adjustments and leaning into uncertainty that can only be described as silver linings.

Augusta Campbell Producer and Costumer Augusta was born in Memphis to Chilean parents who moved here for her father’s work at St. Jude. An enthusiastic cinephile, her father introduced her to film and fantasy at an early age. She followed that passion to St. Agnes Academy and the University of Memphis where she studied fine art and developed her eye for fashion and design. Ironically, her first break in styling was working for St. Jude's Thanks and Giving Campaign launching a career “telling stories through costumes,” Augusta says. With two young boys, she went back to work in print as fashion editor for Mid-South Magazine. Her authentic style was quickly
recognized, and she was scooped up for screen work including commercials and network series Bluff City Law on NBC and Women of the Movement on ABC. She has since produced award-winning short films and just completed a pilot for her first feature film and a national promotional campaign for Grizzlies star Ja Morant. A member of the IATSE Union, Campbell is passionate about bringing creative work to Memphis and promoting local talent to benefit the city. This includes scouting locations, casting and production in addition to her costume work, culling looks from local vintage and high-end shops. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . and virtual events helped to grow the Dixon patronage beyond expectations during the pandemic. Chantal invited influencers to work in the gardens post shutdown and let social media do its magic to attract the attention of new markets. The Dixon offered free admission as soon as it re-opened and has extended that through 2024 with the generosity of donors.
Carey Faber Campbell, MD Plastic Surgery Group of Memphis A native Memphian, Dr. Carey Campbell came home to join the Plastic Surgery Group of Memphis in 2018. An aesthetic plastic surgeon, Dr. Carey offers the latest procedures and treatments, helping clients be “the best version of themselves.” Demand for aesthetic procedures increased during the pandemic. “Patients are more excited to take care of themselves and make improvements.” With degrees from Princeton and Case Western Reserve University and years of fellowships and training in New York and Dallas, Dr. Carey is uniquely qualified to achieve the results her
patients are seeking. Her reputation for exceptional work has helped to grow her client base and garnered national attention, as she was recently invited to join the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Carey was first drawn to medicine in high school when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She and her husband and two young girls are happy to be back in the River City, positively impacting our community through her practice and volunteer work for St. Jude and St. Mary’s Episcopal School. Kristen Ring, Ed.D. President and Head of School, Hutchison School In 2016, Kristen moved with her husband and three children to Memphis. With degrees from Wake Forest and High Point University, Kristen taught English and coached before being recruited as an administrator. Her leadership style is imbued with joy and positivity that is palpable on campus and like a seasoned coach she asks students to think like athletes. “Schools are supposed to be happy places,” she says. “The goal is not perfection—it’s about always trying to improve.”

It has been a few stressful years for school administrators. Kristen introduced initiatives to ensure students felt “valued, known and supported,” even when they were not on campus. Developing girls’ confidence is her top priority in preparation for their next chapter. “We strive to cultivate the mind, body and spirit of our girls, so that they may lead lives of balance and integrity.”
Gretchen Wollert McLennon President and CEO, Ballet Memphis As a high school student at St. Mary’s Episcopal School, Gretchen was a member of the Ballet Memphis company. After earning degrees at Northwestern and Wake Forest and spending many years in the non-profit world, Gretchen joined the Board of Ballet Memphis before being named president and CEO. Her appointment coincided with the beginning of the pandemic, a challenge she embraced with the belief that “when nothing is certain, anything is possible.” It was a perfect time to reposition Ballet Memphis. “While dance and music are the soul of the ballet,” she says, “we want to be aspirational and accessible.” She has sought out fresh new energy and incorporated popular music and a little funk into the company while always maintaining their values of excellence, belonging, authenticity and joy. Building an audience is an ongoing challenge. Her team is constantly working to cultivate the next generation of arts patrons by being more reflective of the Memphis community in their productions. The new building has been critical to that end as have partnerships with other creative institutions like the Stax Music Academy.

Strong Women
Portrait S er ie s
Celebrating Beauty, Strength and Grace
Often difficult times help us find beauty in new places. Megan Grinder’s strong women portrait series began as a reaction to the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg amid a pandemic and a tumultuous time in our country. “Rhetoric in the 2020 election was so heated and divisive, and the passing of a justice who had been a longtime champion of women’s rights kind of pushed me over the edge. I felt like I had to do something,” Megan says. So she sat on her back porch and painted all day until she had finished the portrait of Ginsburg, with beautiful pink lilies sprouting from her head.

Buoyed by strong positive reaction to the Ginsburg portrait on Instagram, Megan continued painting several more well-known strong women, including Maya Angelou, Julia Child, Amanda Gorman, Lady Liberty, Dolly Parton, Pink, Pat Summit and Betty White, all adorned with floral crowns. Megan says, “The flowers depict beauty, strength and grace. Strong things can come in beautiful packages and can be powerful and vulnerable at the same time.” Megan chooses flowers that represent her subjects, like roses for Betty White to symbolize her beloved character Rose Nylund on Golden Girls. How does Megan select her subjects? Megan says they are all women who bring light into the world. “They elevate the conversation in some way and are strong, admirable, accomplished women who retain their femininity. Plus, they have to strike a chord with me. Their words, works, and being have to make me feel better about the world.” Next up on the easel is Queen Elizabeth II and Jane Goodall. There is no one who is taboo, but Megan says she has no desire to paint anyone who is controversial or politically polarizing. “They have to be women I perceive to be elevating the conversation, rising above petty opinions.” Megan’s creative process takes place in her home studio, under a north-facing skylight. She first chooses a primary image of her subject, then creates a crown by layering and arranging f loral images digitally. After the reference image is assembled, she creates a drawing and transfers it to watercolor paper, where she begins applying paint. Megan has always loved creating art. As a child, if she wasn’t outside playing in the dirt, you could find her coloring, drawing, or painting. And today, not much has changed. A strongwoman in her own right, she is an alumna of Hutchison and of Princeton University, where she graduated Cum Laude from the school of visual arts and art history. She also studied painting and drawing in Aix-en-Provence.

Store Credit: Mother's Day Gifting Mahjong Lessons with Henrietta Alvarez - Is the mother in your life a gamer? Crack, Bam, Dot! Henrietta Alvarez can translate. Played with four players, American Mahjong is a popular tile game. We liken it to rummy with more skill and strategy. Book your mother (and her best friends!) lessons with Henrietta—she is the go-to in town. She teaches 7 days a week (10:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.). And if your wife already knows that “jokers are wild cards,” get her a new tile set from Collected by Elizabeth Malmo. Eclectic Eye Ok, yes. We do love a robe. But what she really needs is a new pair of sunglasses. Eclectic Eye carries the most stylish lines—Anne et Valentin, Ahlem, RetroSpecs and others. You won’t find a selection (or service) like this anywhere else in town. And their team is patient with finding the right frame for your personal style. Moms, while you are there for a custom fitting, book an eye exam so you can make sure to spot your kid on the field or where the carpool line is snaking. Eclectic Eye 242 South Cooper Street

SUDS Neighborhood Laundry Kids, if your love language is acts of service, but you still manage to go through 2-3 changes of clothes a day—help a mother out. Drop off all the dirty clothes (and towels!) to SUDS Neighborhood Laundry. They will expertly wash and fold for you. Bring it home and wrap it with a bow. Moms, if it takes you 3-5 business days to fold the laundry… simply book their wash/fold/delivery service for the rest of the year. At least through the summer. Our favorite part about SUDS is their community initiative Loads of Love. Ask them about it. True mothering! Suds Laundry 664 Waring Road

Bluff City Picnics Breakfast in bed, maybe. Give the mothers in your life an experience. Hire out a Spring soiree for your mother and her friends. Or, guys, go in together for your wives’ next book club meeting. Mallory Lester and Jordan Scarleski of Ashley Lang Events recently took over Bluff City Picnics. Select from a menu of catering, décor and even activities from the best vendors. You’ll be sitting pretty at one of their custom-made tables. And who doesn’t want a cotton candy glitter bomb with their champagne? @bluffcitypicnics AshleyLangEvents.com/Picnics
