Merry Christmas!

LAST YEAR, NOT A CREATURE WAS STIRRING, BUT CHRISTMAS 2021 HAS ARRIVED WITH QUITE A CLATTER! It is a joyful scene to see people coming together for the holidays once again. With our December issue, we share inspiration for filling Midsouth homes with cheer, supporting local businesses during the season of giving, and participating in some of Memphis’ exceptional performing arts offerings. However, we recommend holding onto the lessons of Christmas 2020 as well. Throughout the past year, how many times have we heard one another say that the

Christmastime is our chance to reflect on the past while reveling in the present. If you are overwhelmed by a daunting holiday to-do list that might include two years of ideas, might we suggest taking a moment to pause and explore how Memphis is celebrating the season in 2021. For example, well-known Memphis creatives Greg Campbell and Erick New of Garden District have invited us to enjoy an inspiring glimpse of their holiday artistry in Haute Holiday by writer Margaret Ledbetter. And what better way to commemorate this Christmas than with the return of our Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO) to the stage for their Magic of Memphis concert at the Cannon Center. PARTY ON AT PANTA!
JOY AND GOOD VIBES ABOUND IN MIDTOWN
A SINEWY DRAGON ABOVE THE DOOR BECKONS YOU TO ENTER PANTA. Immediately, you sense that this place is ALIVE -- it is green and lush and warm and vibrant. It's a vibe, I guess you'd say. You'll recognize the bar mural, a hold-over from the most-recent Restaurant Iris refresh. So, what does it mean exactly; Panta? Brilliantly weaving the texture of the past into this new concept, Chef/Owner Kelly English christened the new spot "Panta," meaning swamp in Spanish. Aside from the bar, however, little else is recognizable, including, of course, the menu and the hours of operation.

The decision to move Restaurant Iris east to a
larger space in Laurelwood left an empty spot, a blank
canvas in the heart of Midtown. Having spent time in Barcelona studying the language and Catalan cuisine, English was thrilled to host a wildly-successful three month long Catalan-themed “pop-up” last year prov-
ing that the Spanish style has staying power and providing the catalyst for this now permanent concept. “We have always trusted Kelly’s creativity and I think that is what makes our partnership work so well,” says business partner Sylvia Richey. For a design partner on this project, English knew just the man for the job. David Quarles IV is a native Memphian with a passion for creativity, wellness, vibe checks and naps. in his thoughtful designs. English's dream for the restaurant is for it to be a joyful destination for Memphians going to and from cultural events and a welcome spot to land for late-night bites, Sunday brunch and everything in between. With Quarles' Midas touch (and his mama's green thumb), Panta RADIATES joy! Typically a design project like this would require several months to plan and execute. Quarles was given 3 weeks! When he ran into sourcing issues (and he did), budgetary and code-specific restraints for historic Midtown homes (ICYMI, there are many!), he improvised. The team devised a way to hang pendant lights on a track to avoid new holes, and Quarles created his own "wallpaper" to envelop the famous banquette nook. He enlisted his mom with her

The results are without a doubt, pure magic. Panta is open Thursday – Saturday 6pm – 12am and on Sundays for Siesta service from 2-6 pm. trained soprano. Keep an eye out for a Rockette-style “kick-line” of dancing Santas, too! Perhaps Moody’s creative approach to the symphony is rooted in his unlikely introduction to music. He first picked up a cello in the fourth grade when his then girlfriend jokingly added his name to a sign-up sheet following a presentation on string instruments. Moody complied, went to class and the rest is history! He credits his parents, neither musically inclined themselves, for supporting this unexpected request for a cello and subsequent lessons. Moody went on to graduate from Furman University and the Eastman School of Music. When Moody is not performing, conducting, directing, or riding an Elvis Presley Harley, he can often be found running or playing with his three pets: two dogs and a cat. He is an avid snow skier, hiker, Jeopardy watcher and lover of all things outdoors and anything chocolate. Moody and his partner recently purchased a home in Memphis, moving permanently from Charlotte and settling in just in time for the holidays. Moody’s enthusiasm for Memphis and the music community is infectious.

‘t is t he season to be spicy ARTICLE BY KIM LOWRANCE AND CHRISTIAN OWEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH BELL, SÉLAVIE PHOTOGRAPHY
JACKO’S PEPPER JELLY: A WELCOME DIMENSION OF SPICE AND FRUIT THAT EMPOWERS EVEN THE SIMPLEST OF SEASONAL APPETIZERS. Lela Gerald’s pepper jelly will always be a staple for company and conversation, as the history of this local favorite is as engaging as the flavor. Spanning 50 years, Jacko’s has evolved from treasured Christmas gift among family to specialty product on the shelves of more than 40 stores across the South. Lela’s father, Jack Bellows, aka Jacko to his grandchildren, originated the recipe. In 2018, Lela took his mango pepper jelly to market, and Jacko’s has been growing ever since. Lela adds tradition to each jar: her mother’s penchant for entertaining, her father’s passion for local flavors wherever he traveled, and the family’s love of sharing good food. Lela never uses artificial colors or preservatives, and the ingredient list is purposefully short. Recently, Lela chartered new territory by individually seeding 100 tiny kumquats, about which she responds, “Never again! Though, the jelly was delicious.” When we met in Lela’s kitchen, there was a pile of persimmons awaiting their chance to star in a new recipe. What’s next? Apparently, a book! For inspiration, Lela will turn to her 20-year collection of 100 vintage cookbooks dating back to 1910. Memphis, don’t blink – you might miss one of this entrepreneur’s newest flavor combinations or what promises to be a spicy tale told through the pages of a Jacko’s pepper jelly cookbook. Instructions: Preheat oven to 300F. 2-hour preparation: Chicken can be cooked ahead of taco assembly. Slow cooking ensures chicken is tender, and roasted garlic and onions will melt into the finished dish. TO COOK CHICKEN: Add oil to pan. Add everything except pepper jelly. Toss until ingredients are evenly coated. Cover and cook for 90 minutes. Add pepper jelly, adding more if you prefer a sweeter result. Cook 30 minutes more. Let stand 10 minutes. Top with chicken, cheese, cabbage, cilantro. a slice of avocado and a squeeze of lime. Fold and enjoy! Holiday entertaining tip: Use a round cookie cutter to cut mini taco shells from soft flour tortillas. After coating each with light oil or spray, microwave 10 seconds, loosely fold, and bake at 350F for 5 minutes. Fill these mini taco shells with Jacko’s chicken taco mixture for a colorful appetizer. GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. Anna Sarol
“I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent.

When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.”

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GIVE AWAY $3OO,OOO This year the company will have nominations for the giveaway open from December 1-15, 2021. To submit a nomination, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and fill out the form found in the bio link. The amount given to each recipient will be based on need. The leaders of Lifestyle Publications believe God has blessed them with their company’s continued success, so they in turn wish to be a blessing and encouragement to others as they increase the amount of this year’s giveaway to those in need to $300,000 for the year.
In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy 44
