LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Definition of Style Welcome to the annual issue that I believe really showcases the best of what City Lifestyle is all about - style. I’m not much of a fashion guy, but style is really important to me. Yes, I’m a gentleman whose daily wardrobe takes what many would call a uniform approach, but despite my rigid adherence to wearing nearly the same work outfit every day, and almost the same play outfits after work and every weekend, I actually put a tremendous amount of thought into all the details that turn the uniform into my uniform. White sneakers with navy blue pants? Sure! But you better believe that the exact look, brand, and model, and even lacing of white sneaker choice was made with a serious amount of deliberation and great intent. This issue of City Lifestyle explores style with a selection of articles that go well beyond what people are wearing, but what’s important to all of us that put it together is that whether you’re painting a wall, remodeling a room in your home, doing a seasonal transformation of an outdoor space, or picking just the right outfit to wear, that those choices say something about who we all are as individuals. Our goal with this issue is to inspire you, the reader, to focus on the critical details that make things our own, and that those details fill us all with pride and confidence. Can a paint color really do that? You bet. As you thumb through the pages that follow this letter, our hope is that you find inspiration to express your style and to search out those little details that make you happy and tell the story of who you are. We can’t wait to see the results! M I K E M C C A R T H Y, P U B L I S H E R @CITYLIFESTYLERENO

THREADS of Tradition Numaga Indian Days celebrates Sept. 4-6 at the Hungry Valley Powwow Grounds ARTICLE BY LIZA BELKA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILLIS BRETZ

For first-time visitors, the vibrant colors, intricate beadwork, and rhythmic drumbeats of a powwow are unforgettable. But to those stepping into the arena, every feather, stitch, and step carries a story. Each Labor Day weekend, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony welcomes the public to Numaga Indian Days, a free celebration honoring Indigenous culture through powwow dancing, drumming, hand games, and community. Named after Chief Numaga, a Northern Paiute leader remembered for his courage and commitment to peace, the annual gathering celebrates traditions that continue to be passed from one generation to the next. For Skush Poodry, those traditions began at home. A member of the Sac & Fox Nation who was born in Nevada and raised on the Washoe Reservation in Carson City, Poodry grew up traveling to powwows throughout Nevada, California, and Oklahoma with his family. Today, he dances Men's Northern Traditional, one of the oldest powwow dance styles, rooted in the warrior societies of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota people. His regalia reflects both heritage and personal history. Poodry hand-beaded every piece himself, while his mother assembled them into finished garments. Some eagle feathers were gifted from his grandfather, while others were earned through dancing or gifted by friends and family along the powwow trail. And that personal connection, he shares, is why dancers rarely refer to regalia as costumes. "A costume is an outfit you put on to pretend to be something that you are not," Poodry says. "You cannot go and buy all traditional regalia or eagle feathers."

Beyond preserving tradition, powwows continue to build community. "Dancing at powwows has led me to a great way of life," Poodry says. "It has given me the opportunity to mentor other dancers, made new friends and family, kept me clean and sober, and created a better way of living for myself." His hope for first-time visitors is simple: come with an open mind. "Powwows are healing not only for our Native people but for all people," he says. "We welcome everyone to dance with us during the appropriate times." S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E. C O M / R E N O

FLORENCE ARTICLE BY NORA HESTON TARTE

IN

Style

From Florentine leather to food, design your best fashion-forward itinerary Florence’s history dates back to 59 BC, filled with narratives from the past. Once a Roman military colony, the cobbled streets and Arno River saw wars before Florence emerged temporarily as the country’s capital. Modern Florence, however, is more about artistry, honoring traditions while also moving the region forward. Inside shop doors, artists are hard at work hammering gold, placing stones, and sewing garments. In addition to the fashion houses built on convention, there are smaller operations working in a way most cities aren’t used to. These hammering needles and working hands are the backbone of Florentine style. From the leather sourced from the far reaches of the region to the metals worked into buckles and earrings, if you listen closely, the hum of these busy artists is the soundtrack of the city.

THE FASHION OF FLORENCE

The Gucci Museum is a haven for fashion enthusiasts for many reasons. Not only is the Florentine brand iconic with its equestrian details and local leather, but the museum (located in the same piazza as the statue of David) houses rotating exhibits that pay homage to Gucci’s founding family, including gigantic and vibrant tapestries depicting its origin story and recognizable pieces worn by fashion icons before they were set onto mannequins throughout the museum’s three floors. The museum store, however, is the crown jewel for Gucci fans, housing pieces you can only buy from this single location.

Several other designers and fashion houses have gotten their start in Florence including Salvatore Ferragamo, Emilio Pucci, Roberto Cavalli, and Stefano Ricci. Flagship locations span Via de’Tornabuoni, a premier luxury avenue in the city. It’s not only the big names garnering attention though. Florentine leather is amongst the most notable exports from the city. There are tourist shops on every corner selling colorful leather bags and accessories, but the real stuff doesn’t come from there, or the open-air markets. Instead, search out local treasures including places such as Pelletteria Artigiana Viviani and Pierotucci. Many goods are made on site where storefronts double as workshops and you can see the artists as they sew. Another favorite is Il Merlo (translation: the blackbird), created by Kyoko Morita who studied in Kyoto before relocating to Italy in 2013 to work in Florentine leather. Her bags are simple and chic yet playful in their design, considerably more affordable than a Gucci bag without lacking quality. At Studioteca, several artisans sell their wares from clothing to jewelry to home goods. At Labi, the artist is hard at work behind the register sewing handbags and crocheting women’s clothing in between customers. Handmade jewelry is another popular export, but you can do more than purchase it. Some experiences allow for hands-on workshops where metalsmiths teach you the ins and outs of jewelry design, sending you home with a hand-made piece after class. CONTINUED >

Olfactory experiences celebrate the practice of making your own perfume rooted in Renaissance history. Aquaflor Firenze is one of the more known options, offering perfume blending workshops in its historic setting where the retail is just steps from the factory. One of the best ways to explore the vast network of artisans throughout Florence is through a tour, because it’s nearly impossible to find these hidden gems on your own. Italy Charme hosts luxury, personalized individual experiences where you choose where you want to shop. From silk scarves to vintage items, the itinerary is customized to fit your personal style and can include everything from small productions to high-end fashion houses.

ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE

The style of Florence exists beyond the obvious, showing up in the buildings that date back to the sixth century. From Renaissance to Baroque, you’ll spy grand estates and ornate piazzas. Some of the most striking buildings are made in the Florentine Romanesque style, using geometric patterns and green, pink, and white hues. These buildings look almost like paper doll houses, like a façade instead of a complete building, and the final effect is breathtaking. One of the most popular is the Florence Cathedral, an iconic piece of the Florentine skyline that can be viewed from Piazzale Michelangelo Square. And the Piazza Santa Croce has another prime example, a short walk to the carousel in Piazza Repubblica. There are also dramatic Italian gothic buildings, dating mostly between the 13-14th centuries, like the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence’s main duomo. This is perhaps the most popular building to enter within Florence, with long lines wrapping around the cathedral if you didn’t purchase a skip-the-line pass. If you prefer to admire it from afar, grab a spritz on the outdoor patio of one of the square’s central restaurants.

DINING IN STYLE

Gunè San Frediano

No visit to Florence is complete without immersing yourself in the culinary culture. Pasta, vino, gelato, repeat. Oh, and don’t forget the Florentine steak. Gunè is a Michelin restaurant in the San Frediano neighborhood serving up an intense menu of gourmet specialties. Small courses make up a meal with whimsical presentations and flavor-packed bites. The taste is only rivaled by the presentation as bread is served in tiny drawers and desserts in sets of three bite-sized morsels. The meal is clearly one meant to be enjoyed over a languid evening aside plenty of wine before bursting out onto the streets to find your next adventure. For that Florentine steak, however, Trattoria del Carmine just down the road is the superior choice. Ordered by the gram and easily split amongst diners, the thick cut is served rare. Regardless of how you choose to immerse yourself in Florence’s unique culture, you’ll undoubtedly be doing it in style. The romantic city offers new discoveries around every corner, each with a distinct allure only Italy can possess.

COLOR THEORY Richer palettes, smarter paint, and bold design moments define today’s homes ARTICLE BY BRIANNA SOLOSKI

30

D E C OR T R E N D S | HO M E + D E SIGN

“COLOR SHOULD MAKE YOU Prioritizing personal style is perhaps the biggest home trend of 2026. When homeowners design new builds or purchase a home new to them, they are often selecting and making changes to create a space that reflects their personality. Color is at the forefront of those upgrades, reflecting both a signature look and specific mood. “Everyone interprets color differently,” says Shannon Coan, who owns Northern Nevada’s PaintEZ with her husband Kelly Coan. This makes developing a fashion identity within your four walls important when selecting the hues that will ultimately color your space.

COLOR EXPLAINED AND EXPLORED

Color drives design both indoors and out, using both primitive and advanced color theory concepts to create spaces that feel esoteric. “Color should make you feel something,” Shannon says. “What emotion do you want to feel in the space?” Color theory also guides color interaction, influenced by light, room size, window glass tint, etc. As a general rule of thumb, north-facing rooms get less sun, benefitting from warmer paint colors, while south-facing rooms are sunnier, benefitting from cooler colors. The ceiling, or fifth wall, is a design element, as well. “Lighter ceilings make rooms feel taller,” Kelly says.

INTERIOR TRENDS: JEWEL TONES, WASHES & COLOR DRENCHING

“We see homeowners changing interiors more frequently [than exteriors],” Shannon says. Paint in general is perhaps the easiest way to reinvent a space without extensive effort and a hefty budget. It allows home owners to explore bolder aesthetics without a long-term commitment. “Take risks anywhere that’s easy to repaint,” suggests Shannon. Islands, offices, and accent walls add personality without permanence. As for what’s in now, interiors are leaning rich, moody, and expressive. Bronze, black, navy, jewel tones, and deep greens define accent walls and home offices. Color‑drenched rooms—where walls, trim, and ceilings share one enveloping hue—are rising nationwide, creating intimate, immersive spaces. Limewash (an eco-friendly paint made from crushed limestone and water that appears matte and mottled) and Venetian plaster (a classic Italian finish made from fired limestone and marble dust) are gaining popularity, adding soft, old‑world depth to modern homes. And wallpaper has returned, especially in laundry rooms and powder rooms.

FEEL SOMETHING... WHAT EMOTION DO YOU WANT TO FEEL IN THE SPACE?” “In the next five years,” Kelly predicts, “many homes will have at least one wallpapered room; bringing a custom-feel to a space.” Shannon says paint trends tend to move in 20-25 year cycles. That logic suggests renewed interest in autumnal hues; the warm, earthy palette of the early 2000s may be poised for a stylish comeback.

CABINETS: WARM WHITES, SATURATED GREENS & THE RETURN OF OAK

White kitchens remain timeless, but they aren’t the only option. Some homeowners prefer contrast, choosing warmer whites, taupes, and greiges for the main palette and a darker, standout island. Many homeowners are painting contrasting upper and lower cabinets and getting more adventurous with bathroom vanities. Stained kitchen cabinets are also resurging. While some homeowners are opting for painted cabinets to bring color into their kitchens and bathrooms, others prefer a stain, even if it costs a bit more.

EXTERIOR TRENDS: GREIGE, BLACK & HIGH CONTRAST TRIM

Northern Nevada’s hot, dry climate draws people to neutral exteriors: warm whites, taupes, and sage greens. Homeowners increasingly push boundaries with black, navy, and charcoal exteriors and many are replacing white trim with darker shades. Popular pairings include white with black trim, light gray with charcoal, and greige with deeper accents. Front doors are a design focal point, as well. “Research found black or charcoal doors actually increase resale value,” Kelly says. In the end, the experts can weigh in, but it’s all about personal preference. At the end of the day, you’re the one who needs to feel at ease in your space. “It’s just paint,” Kelly adds. “Enjoy your home!”

PAST, PRESENT, & FUTURE

Sometimes a home remodel means more than a fresh design 34

H OM E U P DAT E | HO M E + D E SIGN

ARTICLE BY SHELBY ROCKERS PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOURDSPACE OF RENO/TAHOE

“She wished her late husband could have seen their vision and remodel of their home come to life.” It started as many meaningful transformations do, with a simple decision: it was time for a change. After 21 years in her home, Alice wasn’t just looking for an upgrade—she was ready to create something that finally felt like her own. The finishes in the home were original, chosen long ago and Alice wanted to create a space that felt more personal. For a few years, she and her late husband had talked about remodeling the bathroom. Life, as it often does, moved forward before the project ever began. Then, earlier this year, something shifted. After hearing a local radio ad and later seeing DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Reno featured on Channel 2’s Plus You Nevada (highlighting a philanthropy project remodeling the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9211), Alice made a decision. She chose a team that could handle everything from start to finish. From the start, the vision was clear: a space that felt modern and deeply personal—something that moved beyond the standard “production home” aesthetic into a design that was unique and designed for comfort and intention. The existing layout presented limitations. Built on a slab subfloor, plumbing changes were restricted and limited, requiring the design team to work creatively within the existing footprint. But rather than a setback, it became an opportunity to refine the details that would matter most. The design direction centered around a warm, neutral palette that was elegant and coordinated to flow with the rest of the home’s interior. Standout features like a Taj Mahal herringbone mosaic that highlights the vanity and shower walls brings so much life to this space. But the true transformation extended beyond just the aesthetics.

The newly enlarged shower—complete with a folddown bench and updated plumbing fixtures—was designed with longevity and daily function in mind. It’s a space that doesn’t just look beautiful, but supports ease, comfort, and independence for years to come. For Alice, the reveal was more than visual. “Every day, there was something new to look at,” she shares. “I was amazed. The cabinetry especially—it changed everything. I was hesitant to use it at first. I just wanted to admire it.” Her home feels different now. “It just feels refreshed and happy,” she says. “It has given new life to a home already well loved.” That feeling of this transformation carries a deeper emotional layer. Throughout the process, Alice often reflected on the one person who wasn’t there to see it. “She wished her late husband could have seen their vision and remodel of their home come to life,” the DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen team notes. In many ways, the space holds that story—past, present, and future. It represents memories created, a renewed love for her home today, and excitement for what comes next. When asked what the team hopes people feel stepping into the finished space, the answer is simple: “A place where function and form merge beautifully.” It’s a balance that, in this case, has clearly been achieved. In fact, before the final details of the master bathroom were even complete, Alice made another decision—signing on to remodel her guest bathroom next, with work set to begin in October 2026. Because sometimes, one transformation doesn’t just change a room, it changes how you feel in your home entirely.

Get Cozy this Autumn A seasonal outdoor refresh may be all your home needs As autumn arrives, we wake up to that first hint of crispness in the air and pull our cozy sweaters out of the back of the closet. But, just like our wardrobes, our porches and outdoor spaces deserve a seasonal refresh too. Welcome the changing season and prepare to embrace cozier moments with some simple tips from Joanna Branzell, founder and CEO of Joanna Branzell Interior Design. You don’t need a large budget or even updated furniture to capture the season’s “sweater weather vibes,” she says. “If you have a blank canvas for a porch, we can make anything happen,” says Branzell, who recently has relocated her eight-yearold company to downtown Reno in one of the remodeled historic homes nestled along the Truckee River. “Fill up your stoop, steps, or front entry with a spillover with pumpkins and fall colors.” Branzell also recommends swapping out the bright summer-colored pillows and outdoor cushions for rich autumn hues such as rust, orange, amber, and deep greens. Or, add a few classic fall staples such as a scarecrow or mums.

Before rushing out to buy new décor, take inventory of what you already own and donate what you won’t use again, Branzell advises. Fall is Northern Nevada’s time to shine and many homeowners are transforming their outdoor spaces into extensions of their living areas to enjoy the cooler weather. Hanging solar-powered patio lights can add to the fall ambiance or soft throw blankets can help extend your time outdoors. “It’s all about making it feel like our outdoor spaces are our secondary rooms, and for me sometimes I don’t even decorate the inside of my house for the fall,” Branzell says. “You let the leaves and everything else speak for itself and all of its natural beauty.”
