J e s s i e G r a f f ’s Superhero St yle and Determined Mindset I n s p i re a t A n y A g e . ARTICLE BY LESLEY A. ROLLO PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRAE PATTON

To millions, stuntwoman Jessie Graff is the high-flying powerhouse in her signature Wonder Woman athletic apparel, conquering obstacles on NBC’s American Ninja Warrior (ANW). Her ANW resume includes participating in 11 seasons of competition, a 7x national finalist, six career buzzers in main competition, and the distinction of being the first woman to finish Stage 1. But talk with this Redondo Beach resident for just five minutes and it’s clear that what gives her the strength of a superhero is more than her physicality—it’s her mindset. “I identify as a master of resilience in recovery,” 41-year old Graff said. “I break a lot, but I recover amazingly.” Her secret weapon? Focus. “I always try to keep my focus on how I am getting better,” she explained. “So even if I put everything into it and before competition, I say, all right, this is everything you’ve been working for. You cannot fail. If you fail, you die. The pressure actually helps me. It pushes me to my limits.” “The second I fall, I have to be ready to reframe that and say, okay, did you get stronger? Yes. Did you get faster? Yes. Did you get healthier? Did you build really cool friendships while training? Did you get more coordinated? Oh, my gosh. Look at all those wins.” For Jessie, the outcome isn’t the goal—it’s the process that matters. This mindset didn’t develop in isolation. Jessie credits her mother, Ginny MacColl, as a major influence. “My mom is the most fiercely determined person I’ve ever met,” expressed Jessie. After retiring around age 61, her mom started secretly training. It took three years to do a strict form pull-up. “She just never gave up,” Jessie said.

Now 73, Ginny holds the Guinness World Record for the oldest competitive female ninja athlete, and has appeared in four seasons of ANW. Watching her mother pursue strength and skill later in life inspires Jessie. “Every year, she's learning more technique and getting stronger, healthier, and more coordinated, and I want to have that.” Visualizing the future keeps Jessie motivated, and she encourages others to do the same. As for her future self, “It looks a lot like my mom. I picture this little old lady with the old lady sweater who's getting out of the back seat of a car and the nice young man comes over and offers a hand. And she cartwheels out and jumps up to a railing and starts doing pull-ups and everyone's like, what? That’s my new image of who I want to be.” Her message to others—especially women embracing strength at any age—is to rethink what success looks like. Jessie’s Strength-Style Strategies: • Create two workout plans. Design a high-bar version (your full ideal workout) and a low-bar version (a 10-minute, “no matter what” routine).

Hitting the buzzer after conquering the course.

14

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FI TNE SS

• Redefine success. Instead of chasing maximum strength today, think long-term. What do you want for your future self? • Make it playful. Graff teaches adult classes at a local Ninja gym with students as old as 61. She incorporates safe “falling drills” and strength training. • Celebrate little wins. Progress builds confidence. Be willing to start somewhere and work to beat it next week. When she’s not stunt-doubling, training, or teaching, Jessie soaks up the South Bay lifestyle. Her favorite activities include rollerblading, paddleboarding, cycling, climbing trees, and even digging in the sand for cardio. And in true Ninja fashion, she’s brought the course home—transforming her house with more than 30 grips, holds, and upper-body obstacles, most of which she built herself. One of Jessie’s favorite phrases is: “Be Your Own Hero.” And part of that, she says, is defining who your hero is. What qualities does that person have? Craft that vision— and let it guide you to your own fierce style.

LIVING STYLE THE INTERSECTION OF FASHION AND HOME

ARTICLE BY TYLER AMADEUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADRIEN KING AND ALEC WALWORTH

IN

this unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression. As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors. Although we tend to consider cost-perwear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for

the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space. The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives. In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that

are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory. Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes. The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.

STYLED TO LAST: Painting Meets Art and Science

INSIDE MANHATTAN PAINT COMPANY’S APPROACH TO PREP, COLOR, AND STYLE. ARTICLE BY LESLEY A. ROLLO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

16

EXP E RT H E LP | HO M E SE RVICE S

Manhattan Paint Company owner Peter Kelley ( in the center) and his team.

Peter Kelley, owner of Manhattan Paint Company, knows his stuff—not just because he's studied the science behind sheen and color tones, but because he’s lived it. His journey began at 18, after he crashed his dad’s car. To pay for the car repairs, his father told him he would be painting a neighbor’s house trim. That’s where Peter learned to paint or so he thought. A few years later while home from college for the summer, his dad connected him with Mr. Pearson, a semi-retired painting contractor repairing an office building in South Redondo. Mr. Pearson asked Peter if he had painting experience. “Sure,” Peter replied. “I put a drop cloth down, grabbed a bucket and a paint brush, and started painting. I got two strokes and Mr. Pearson said, ‘Stop kid. You’re one of the worst painters I’ve ever seen.’” It was a humbling start that turned into a life-changing mentorship. Mr. Pearson taught Peter how to hold sandpaper, how to use it, and how to sand surfaces with precision. That “Mr. Miyagi moment,” as Peter calls it, launched a decades-long career built on craftsmanship, color instincts, and a respect for prep. “When I prep it, I’m able to know what it’s going to look like when I put paint on it,” explained Peter. “If you cut corners in prep, sometimes when you put the paint on, you’re going to see that corner that you cut.” While Manhattan Paint Company handles both residential and commercial projects, about 70% of their business comes from transforming local homes. Peter says the era of cool grays is phasing out. “We're moving back towards softer whites. And I'm seeing a lot of earth tones like greens.” Accent walls remain a popular way to anchor a space—whether behind a bed, across from French doors, or as a pop of color in a neutral room. “Accent walls are designed to pull the space visually to make it look longer or bigger,” explained Peter. Beyond color, the paint finish is where style meets science. Flat paint CONTINUED >

hides imperfections like a dream but absorbs dirt. Eggshell, matte, and satin finishes are smoother and more durable. Peter compares paint finish to car upholstery. “You have leather seats in your car and you spill some water on it. It just wipes off,” said Peter. “If you have cloth seats in your car and you spill some water, your cloth is wet because the cloth is porous. That's the difference between flat versus eggshell or semi-gloss.” In moisture-prone areas like kitchens and bathrooms, eggshell is often the sweet spot— offering enough sheen to handle humidity without the glossy shine of semi-gloss. When choosing paint, consider both trends and function. If you have young kids, dogs, or just tend to touch the walls a lot, a flat finish isn’t ideal, especially in highly trafficked areas like stairwells and hallways. A finish with some sheen is easy to wipe away those little hand- and pawprints. Peter also warns about the "one coat" marketing myth. Paints that promise one-coat coverage often disappoint—especially going from dark to light. He always applies two coats to guarantee even, lasting coverage. Coverage is only part of the equation. Choosing the right color for the style of home is just as critical. Peter appreciates the diversity of Redondo’s neighborhoods—from two-on-a-lots in North Redondo to Spanish, Craftsman, and Mid-Century gems in South Redondo—and says it’s important to consider a home’s architecture when selecting paint colors, not just follow trends. He recalled a mid-century project that struck the perfect balance. “Because the house got a new color paint, it looked modernized, but at the same

Prep Like a Pro: Do’s and Don’ts Peter Kelley’s painting tips for a flawless, long-lasting finish.

DO: • Use primer on raw wood or fresh drywall to seal the surface and help paint adhere evenly. • Sand glossy surfaces so new paint sticks. • Test multiple swatches in different spots and natural lighting before committing to a color. • Choose finishes based on lifestyle—how you live matters more than how it looks. AFTER: The beautiful end result pulls the whole space together.

DON’T: time it held the integrity of a mid-century ranch,” he said. “We weren’t trying to make a mid-century look like a 21st-century modern. I really like working on houses when we’re able to do things like that.” From thoughtful prep to finish selection and color matching, painting—done right—is an art, a science, and a lasting investment in your home. It’s not just about choosing the right shade or following the latest trend; it’s about understanding how surfaces behave, how lighting shifts color throughout the day, and how quality materials and proper prep protect your home for years to come. Whether you're refreshing a sun-faded exterior, modernizing a living room, or simply making a space feel more like home, the key is doing it right—whether that means hiring the right company or taking your time as a DIYer. Style may start with color, but lasting results come from experience, attention to detail, and a deep respect for the process.

• Expect one coat to cover everything, especially when painting over dark colors. • Use flat paint in moisture-prone spaces like kitchens and bathrooms—it won’t hold up. • Skip the sanding step—this prep is what separates pros from amateurs. • Put semi-gloss on sundrenched, vaulted walls (avoid a blinding glare).

Inside the South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach, a remarkable nonprofit is redefining how art, community, and civic engagement come together. Founded by brothers Bernie and Ed Massey, Portraits of Hope isn’t just about painting public spaces—it’s about transforming lives, amplifying youth voices, and giving style a social conscience.

Painting with a brush crafted from a retrofitted baseball bat. Photography by Portraits of Hope.

The story began in 1995, when Ed, an artist and author, began reading his children’s book Milton to kids in hospitals, offering moments of escape through story and imagination. Meanwhile, Bernie was developing civic education programs that encouraged students to engage with real-world dilemmas, helping them understand the decisions adults face in leadership roles. Their separate paths—Ed’s storytelling and Bernie’s civic outreach—intersected in a way neither expected. The brothers had their “aha” moment when they spotted a massive tower on the border of Beverly Hills and Century City—faded and clearly in need of a fresh coat of paint. They learned that its panels had been painted on the ground before being installed. The concept was simple: if artwork could be created on flat, accessible surfaces and then installed, it meant anyone—children, individuals with disabilities, even those confined to hospital beds—could take part in large-scale public art projects. That insight sparked a mission and Portraits of Hope was born. While Ed and Bernie Massey are the public faces of Portraits of Hope, the organization’s heart can be traced to their mother. As a young woman in Mexico City, she worked with the visually impaired before government support existed. “She raised us with a strong social conscience,” Bernie said. “Not from a political standpoint, but ‘Hey, look, this is right, this is wrong. This is the world.’” That legacy lives in every brushstroke. Portraits of Hope develops one-of-a-kind projects that blend the creation of dynamic public art works with creative therapy for hospitalized children and civic education for students of all ages. These students explore pressing social issues, then write, speak, and create artwork around the causes they care about most. In doing so, they develop not just visual literacy, but also skills in public speaking and critical thinking. Their reward at the end of the education session is getting to participate in the painting of a current Portraits of Hope project. Beyond the classroom, that hands-on spirit continues at Portraits of Hope’s headquarters in the South Bay Galleria. There, volunteer groups regularly come together on weekends to paint panels that are later installed in senior centers, transitional housing, and social service organizations. Each burst of color is a reminder that someone, somewhere, cares. “Hopefully when you walk out of there,” said Bernie, “You say, ‘That just made my weekend a little bit better.’”

That spirit of care and connection—expressed through every vivid burst of color—comes through not just in the mission, but in the artwork itself. Portraits of Hope is instantly recognizable for its signature style: thick black outlines filled with radiant, bold colors. The vibrancy is unmistakable. But what truly sets the work apart isn’t just how it looks—it's who gets to create it. To ensure everyone can participate, the Massey brothers developed—and in some cases patented—a range of adaptive painting tools. As Bernie explained, their approach to developing creative tools is to ask, “What is it that these kids would need to be able to feel like just another kid?” Shoe brushes allow individuals to paint with their feet. Telescoping brushes—some up to seven feet long—let children in wheelchairs or hospital beds reach canvases. Textured paint helps the visually impaired participants feel where to paint. There are even fruit wrapped mouth brushes for those who can’t use their hands or feet. Old baseball bats donated by a former professional baseball player have been retrofitted into paint brushes to add a playful twist. What’s striking is how often children choose these tools out of curiosity, not necessity—wanting to try the “fun brushes” for themselves. That spirit of joy, spontaneity, and belonging is entirely by design. CONTINUED >

Over the decades, Portraits of Hope has done many high-profile projects from the sky to the sea, wrapping a blimp, an airplane, NASCAR race cars, and a WWII tugboat, as well as designing thousands of spheres for a floating exhibit at MacArthur Park. They’ve brought color to New York City taxis and transformed civic landmarks across the country. One especially beloved project in the South Bay was the “Summer of Color”, when 156 lifeguard towers along 31 miles of Los Angeles County coastline were transformed from their traditional blue into the vibrant signature style of Portraits of Hope. Redondo Beach residents played a key role in the lifeguard tower project, with many parents and students from local schools volunteering their time, creativity, and heart. That same spirit will likely

shine again as Portraits of Hope prepares for its most ambitious project yet: a floating and illuminated art installation in Washington D.C.’s iconic Reflecting Pool, in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. Never before has any artwork been permitted in the Reflecting Pool—until now.

“Just like Washington and Lincoln were the foundational blocks or the pillars of the country, these kids are going to be the next foundational blocks.”

Colorful spheres transform MacArthur Park. Photography by Georgi Massey.

With support from the Department of the Interior and National Park Service, this unprecedented artwork will involve 20,000 children from across all 50 states and U.S. territories recommended by their Congress members and senators. The exhibition’s design style is inspired by the monuments surrounding the Reflecting Pool, as well as the next generation. “The panels are shaped like floating tubes and cubes,” explained Bernie. “Just like Washington and Lincoln were the foundational blocks or the pillars of the country, these kids are going to be the next foundational blocks.” The exhibit will be on display for 30 days starting in mid-September

2026—a glowing celebration of youth, unity, and creative possibility. Still, for Portraits of Hope, the end of a project is never truly the end. Once the installation comes down, its impact continues. Panels are donated and even auctioned at fundraisers—extending the spirit of hope long past the installation’s end date. Portraits of Hope proves that style isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about access. It’s about voice. About participation. About painting a future where everyone, regardless of age, ability, or background, leaves their mark. Visit portraitsofhope.org to learn more.

Step Into J’s Art Nail Lounge A SALON EXPERIENCE YOU'LL LOVE COMING BACK TO.

Opened in April 2025, J’s Art Nail Lounge isn’t your typical nail salon. Founder Vince Phan envisioned a space where artistry, self-care, and connection could coexist—and he delivered. Tucked in the heart of Riviera Village, the salon offers more than just polish: it’s a calm environment where every detail is designed to pamper. Vince and his team pride themselves on client care—not just nail care.

REDONDO BEACH CITY LIFESTYLE: HOW DO YOU CREATE AN EXPERIENCE THAT KEEPS PEOPLE COMING BACK? VINCE PHAN: We designed the salon to feel like a mini retreat—clean tools, cozy chairs, no loud talking, and no rushed appointments. We remember clients’ preferences, from colors and nail shapes to music choices. We also use high-quality products that last longer. People come back because their nails don't chip after a week. RBCL: WHAT COLORS, SHAPES, OR FINISHES ARE TRENDING RIGHT NOW? VINCE: We have over 1,000 colors. Almond and short round shapes are the most popular, along with gel color, cat eye, and chrome finishes. RBCL: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR KEEPING NAILS HEALTHY BETWEEN APPOINTMENTS? VINCE: Hydrate cuticles daily, moisturize hands and feet, wear gloves for chores, avoid using nails as tools, don’t peel polish, keep nails shaped, and take breaks from overlays every few months.

burgundy, navy, plum, and chocolate. French tips remain classic. For winter: velvet and matte finishes, smoky sheers, jelly ice, magnetic polish with smoky red, rhinestones, pearls, metallic decals, pastel blue, silver, and neutral bases with light chrome. RBCL: ARE MORE CLIENTS ASKING FOR NON-TOXIC, VEGAN, OR NATURAL NAIL PRODUCTS? VINCE: Yes. More clients are choosing non-toxic, vegan, and natural products for health reasons. RBCL: WHAT SHOULD WOMEN OVER 40 KEEP IN MIND FOR NAIL AND HAND HEALTH? VINCE: Nails get thinner with age, so strengthening is key. Acetone and regular polish can damage natural nails, so nail polish choices matter. We suggest neutral or sheer shades that flatter skin tone, as well as short-to-medium nail lengths in almond or squoval shapes for durability. Gel X or Hard Gel protect natural nails. RBCL: WHAT PROMOTIONS DO YOU OFFER? VINCE: We offer 10% off for new clients and a 5% referral discount. We also provide a 10% student discount to Redondo Union and South High School to get services for prom and graduation. Additionally, we want to start a fundraiser—when high school students or faculty book services, we’ll donate 10% to their school. All your. nail care options, right at your fingertips.

FINDING STYLE —AND HOME— IN REDONDO

Interior Designer Sara Barney on Hot Trends, Design Psychology, and Why Redondo Feels Just Right. ARTICLE BY LESLEY A. ROLLO PHOTOGRAPHY BY MOLLY CULVER PHOTOGRAPHY

Sara Barney didn’t set out to become an interior designer. “Back in 2016, I was looking to make a change, but I didn't know what that looked like,” she recalled. “It sounds cutesy, but it was a light bulb moment—what if I went back to school for design?” She enrolled in a one-year program while working full time and raising two young kids in Austin, Texas. “I'd come home, put them to bed, and crank away at the program. I was also putting myself out there like, hey, I'm a designer-ish—and people were hiring me.” The leap of faith paid off. After completing the program in just three months, she launched her firm, BANDD/DESIGN, named after her daughters. “My kids are Blake and Decker and that's ‘B and D’. We'll just call it BANDD/DESIGN with an extra d.” As her business grew in Texas, Sara decided it was time for a change of pace and location. She was already familiar with Southern California, having lived in Hollywood while working in entertainment, so she felt it was the right place to expand. Her top priorities: excellent public schools and beach proximity. “I had already been doing work in California so the next step was to determine where to live. If I had known South Bay existed, I would have never left LA,” Sara said. “Redondo is a sleepy beach town, but you're 30 minutes from LA. I’m shocked that everybody doesn't want to live there.”

Approachability is a hallmark of BANDD/DESIGN. “I very much did not want to create a business where it felt inaccessible to anybody who wanted beautiful design,” said Sara. “It still costs money. It's still a luxury service. But I don't ever want it to feel like, ‘Hey, your project's not big enough.’” She thrives in Southern California’s design diversity. “Every house is different here. Some people wouldn’t like that, but I love it.” She’s currently working on a home in the Hollywood Hills designed by famed architect A. Quincy Jones. “It’s super cute, very weird, makes no sense at all. It’s so cool.” While her projects vary, one constant is how she begins each one—with curiosity about her clients. “We send out a CONTINUED >

questionnaire at the beginning with all kinds of random questions like, What's your favorite TV show? What's your favorite cocktail? Because I feel like someone who likes a martini versus a glass of wine— that’s two totally different personalities. It helps me understand how you live.” She encourages clients to focus on the now. “Don’t design for five to 10 years from now, design for your life now… Chances are you're going to want to change it anyway.”

Post-COVID design trends, she notes, have reflected people’s emotional needs, especially for touch. “There was a resurgence of using natural materials. They call it organic modern—raw wood, textured walls. I like the designs to feel layered and textured. It makes it feel richer in my mind.” She’s seeing a resurgence in natural wood on cabinets. Mid tone woods, handmade tiles, velvets, and sage greens dominate client preferences. Lately there’s growing interest in purple and butter yellow. Still, trends come and go. For Sara what lasts is simplicity. “People have too much stuff. Think of it like an art gallery. They

don't put up every piece of art. So think about the best ones and get rid of the rest.” For easy home upgrades, Sara recommends paint, pillows, and drapery. “People don't invest in drapery, and it is such a game changer in your space,” she explained. “It elevates your house times a thousand. Changing the chandelier in your dining room is not that big of a deal, and it could be such a huge change to the

overall feel of the space. And that also helps in resale.” In the end, it all comes back to connection—for Sara, between people and place, style and substance. “One of my favorite things to do with my daughters, especially my younger daughter, is drive around and look at houses, which is something I loved doing as a kid,” she said. “We've determined we have very different styles. But it's figuring out what we like in these homes and what we appreciate about them. I love that.”

INGREDIENTS • 1 1/2 oz- Cucumber & dragon fruit gin • 3/4oz- Toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum • 1/2oz- Lime juice • Topped with ginger beer • Hawaiian black lava salt & black sesame

GARNISH • Small paint brush • Simple syrup • Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with a pinch of black sesame

INSTRUCTIONS Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.

Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up! Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is fever tree ginger beer).
