A Celebration of Women

May brings a season of celebration—of connection, of community, and of the women who shape both in meaningful ways. This month, our theme is Ladies, and we’re honored to spotlight the strength, creativity, and impact of women throughout our community.

In this issue, we are privileged to share the stories of several remarkable women who inspire us.

Finding Her Voice: We sit down with the co-lead singer of Fitz and the Tantrums to discuss her artistic journey and the power of finding one’s true calling and platform.

Weathering Life with Grace: We profile a familiar face from our local news—a meteorologist who embodies strength and humility, inspiring others to embrace challenges and live with purpose.

Women Build the South Bay: This feature is especially meaningful as it highlights local, women-owned businesses recommended by you , our readers—a tribute to the entrepreneurial spirit that helps our community thrive.

Love Note to Moms: We’ve gathered a heartwarming collection of notes from local kids to their mothers—sweet, honest reflections that remind us of the lasting impact of a mother’s love.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we hope these pages inspire you to celebrate the incredible women in your own life. Thank you for being part of our community and for helping us honor the women who make it such a special place to call home.

With full hearts,

May 2026

FINDING HER VOICE

and

Fitz and the Tantrums’ Noelle Scaggs on Selflove and Expanding Music Industry Access.

When Fitz and the Tantrums take the stage at Redondo Beach’s BeachLife Festival on Friday, May 1, co-lead singer Noelle Scaggs returns to a place that feels like home. The band performed at BeachLife in September 2021 when the festival resumed after

Fitz and the Tantrums’ co-lead singer, Noelle Scaggs, known for her powerhouse vocals
fearless style.
“I love that I have the ability to bring people joy. If there’s anything that I do in this career and this life, it’s that.”

the pandemic. Though she now lives in Nashville, Southern California holds a strong sense of belonging for Noelle, who spent most of her youth here.

“I was six or seven when we moved to LA from Denver,” Noelle said. “Getting back to Los Angeles and back in California is always great for me because it gives me an excuse to see friends and family, or have people come out to the show that haven’t seen us play in a long time,” she said. “There’s always a reconnecting component to when we play at home.”

For nearly two decades, Noelle has helped define the soulful pop energy that has made Fitz and the Tantrums a festival favorite. But behind the scenes, her journey has also been about rediscovering her voice.

“For most of my career, music was my only focus,” she said. “With that comes a lot of ebbs and flows. Every person, I don’t care what you’re doing in this world, how in love with it you are, you get burned out.”

When the pandemic paused touring for all musicians, Noelle reflected on another side of herself— the student who studied publishing and the business side of the music industry in college.

“I had a moment where I didn’t know why I was still doing music,” she said. “I felt like everything on my adventure had been fully about the band, our music, what we were doing, that it was neglecting sides of myself that I felt were more important and I didn’t know how to recapture that.”

That reflection led her to start Diversify The Stage in 2020, a nonprofit designed to expand opportunities in live music—especially for underrepresented young people who might not realize those careers exist. Through mentorships and apprenticeships, students gained hands-on experience in various aspects of the live music business, from stage production to booking and ticketing. For Noelle, the

Fitz and the Tantrums (L–R): Jeremy Ruzumna, James King, Noelle Scaggs, Joseph Karnes, and Michael Fitzpatrick.

mission was personal she often found herself the only woman who looked like her in executive or backstage spaces.

“I didn’t really feel like there was representation of my culture within the live industry space, and it didn’t matter where I was in the world or what we were doing, that’s what I saw. Not to say that it doesn’t exist, I just didn’t see it.”

From 2021 to 2024, Diversify The Stage partnered with major festivals, touring companies, and nonprofits, giving students a foothold in an industry where they might otherwise go unseen. Although challenges with funding forced the nonprofit to close, its impact—and the confidence it gave students and Noelle’s own voice—will be felt for years.

“I started Diversify The Stage and I ran that organization for three years,” she said. “That brought a part of my voice I thought I had lost back. And a confidence came back to me as an artist within Fitz and the Tantrums as well.”

Today, Noelle says she’s embracing her “golden 40s”—a chapter defined by gratitude, perspective, and self-love.

“I’ve built a great life with this band,” she said. “I’m just trying to enjoy the experience of enjoying what I built… a beautiful home. I’ve got two great dogs. Now I’m dating.”

Her confidence also comes from the strong women who raised her.

“I have a family full of women who are just bosses,” she said. “My aunts, my cousin, my sister. All the women in my family are matriarchs.”

That joy—and the life she’s built—is reflected in her new solo single Money Fame Love, released in February 2026. When asked whether she deserves it all, Noelle answered candidly: “I think so. Can you have it all? I think I’ve done well. I’m in love. I am in love with myself. Truly in love with myself. I love my partner. I have really amazing friends and family. My dogs seem to like me a lot depending on meal time. I think you can have it all, but I think you can also have it all without losing yourself in it.”

Money Fame Love captures that balance—self-love, gratitude, and celebrating the life you’ve built without losing sight of yourself.

Outside of her music, Noelle embraces a quiet life. “I am not a party girl,” she said. “So as much as the energy that I exude on stage, I’m a complete pumpkin in the house. I love to cook. I really do enjoy being at home. There is nothing better for me than sitting at home, finding a series that I can binge, reading a book, or making my next adventure.”

But when the lights come up and the music begins, she knows exactly what she hopes the audience will take with them. “Joy,” she said. “That’s a big thing for me… I love that I have the ability to bring people joy. If there’s anything that I do in this career and this life, it’s that.”

When opportunity calls to lift others in need, champion the cause. Step boldly. Embrace your purpose. Find your voice.

Weathering Life with Grace

Vera Jimenez lights up a room the way she lights up the set—with energy, warmth, and electricity. The longtime KTLA meteorologist forecasts Southern California weather, but off camera, she embraces challenges, invests time in her community, and moves through life with grace.

The youngest of six children, Vera learned early what strength looks like. Her father passed away when she was 3, so she saw it in her mother—a woman who wore steel-toed boots at her factory job, built muscle through manual labor, and didn’t retire until she was 73. “My mom was a very active woman. She didn’t sit, and I have that same trait,” Vera said. Those lessons shaped how Vera approaches challenges, both personal and professional.

In her final years, her mother’s rare genetic condition led to a series of health hurdles. Once fiercely independent, she grew frustrated as her mobility declined. “It was bittersweet,” Vera said. “She’s like, ‘I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore.’” She

often expressed fear of being alone, and Vera reassured her, “One of us is always here.”

When the moment came, Vera lay beside her mom, offering comfort and keeping that promise. Vera chose to keep her mother’s passing in August 2024 private. “I didn’t make it public. I didn’t let people know,” she shared.

Perhaps it’s awareness of life’s fragility that fuels the way Vera lives now—intentionally, actively, and in service to others. Since 2010, Redondo Beach has been home. She moved here shortly after starting at KTLA, relocating from Eagle Rock to be closer to her now-husband, Brian Herlihy. “I do love it,” she said. “I love that it’s a very active community.”

Vera has embraced the South Bay—hiking five miles through Palos Verdes with women from Rotary, taking family walks with her husband

and dog Rufus, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, serving on the LA Harbor Boys & Girls Club board, and supporting Maria’s Closet in San Pedro, which provides prom dresses to girls in need. For her, community is about connecting across groups, not just giving.

At 53, Vera is learning to be more selective. “My husband always says, I’m a mile wide and an inch deep. And now I’m trying to become an inch wide and a mile deep,” she said. “There are so many worthy causes that you want to be able to be there for all of them, but you can’t… I’m learning how to say no.” This intentionality also applies to personal goals.

As she approached 50, Vera set a milestone challenge for herself: learn to swim—and swim pier to pier. “I’m not built to be a swimmer,” she admitted. The goal took a year. “It was getting in the water when I didn’t want to get in the water, despite the fact that I was going to have goggle eyes, and I was going to look horrible on TV,” she recalled. In the end, she swam from the Redondo Beach breakwall to the Manhattan Beach Pier in two hours. “I’m a slow swimmer, but I did it.”

Why push herself like that? “When you do things that you don’t believe that you can do… it raises your self esteem,” she said. “It also reminds me to stay humble. I have self-esteem issues, just like everybody else,” she admitted. “Doing hard things reminds me who I am.”

Humility is a recurring theme. On social media, Vera posts without filters, often without makeup. “I want young girls to see that social media isn’t reality,” she said. “Everybody doesn’t wake

up beautiful… This is the reality of what my life is.” She does her own hair, makeup, and wardrobe for TV appearances. She recently made a small concession to get Botox. “I get minimal so that I can still move my face.” The message, she emphasizes, is choice. “They don’t have to if they don’t want to.”

Her real focus isn’t appearance—it’s longevity. “I go to the gym… because I want to be able to move when I’m 85,” she said. “I call it aging gracefully.”

Faith also plays a central role. A religious studies major, Vera is currently writing a prayer journal. “I found that sometimes the prayers that I read in my little Catholic prayer book… I didn’t connect to,” she explained. So she began writing her own—short, scripture-rooted prayers grounded in real emotion: gratitude, anger, grief, jealousy. “I don’t use haughty language. I use very colloquial words that I think people connect to.” She hopes to publish it by year’s end.

When asked what advice she’d give young women, Vera doesn’t hesitate. “Life is hard, attack it. It’s the only way we grow. Win or lose, dance your heart out! You’re odd. We all are. Why be a window when you can be stained glass?”

Vera Jimenez isn’t just forecasting the weather. She’s modeling what it looks like to live intentionally, actively, and with resilience—moving forward through loss, challenges, and life’s ups and downs, with humility, faith, and grace—knowing that even when the skies are uncertain, there is always sunshine waiting on the other side.

Women Build the South Bay

Clients, friends, and fellow businesses flooded us with Instagram nominations for inspiring female business owners. While we couldn’t feature every nominee, these women represent the passion and perseverance shaping the South Bay every day.

We asked them: What does building something in the South Bay mean to you?

Ali Gold

“What building something in the South Bay means to me is resilience and community. It’s proof that when women lift each other up, we create space for bold ideas, steady progress, and opportunities that ripple beyond our own doors. Leaving my 16-year veterinary career to pursue my dreams, I aim for every win by a woman entrepreneur to serve as a beacon for others to start, mentor, and lead. Being a steadfast pillar of support for my community has been life-changing, and I believe our collective courage can transform challenges into tangible impact across the South Bay.”

Sarah Muzzio

“Building something in the South Bay means creating a place where people feel supported, connected, and able to stay active in the community they love. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy and small business owner, it’s incredibly rewarding to help our neighbors move better and return to the activities that make this area so special. The South Bay has such a strong sense of community, and contributing by caring for the people who live here is what makes the work so meaningful. For me, building a business here is really about building relationships and helping people thrive.”

Jessica Hewett

“I have been a lifelong resident of the South Bay and have always loved the ‘small city’ feel it has. Building a woman-owned business here gives me the opportunity to connect with our community and bring my experience full circle. I love creating lasting bonds with pet parents in our grooming salon and wouldn’t choose to have my business anywhere else.”

LOVE NOTES TO MOMS

For our May “Ladies” issue, we wanted to hear from a group whose perspective on the women in their lives is refreshingly honest: kids. We asked students at Richardson Middle School to anonymously write down one thing they love about their moms. No overthinking, no editing — just a few handwritten words straight from the heart.

The responses were sweet, funny, and thoughtful. While we couldn’t share every note, the ones here offer a small glimpse into the gratitude kids feel for the women who care for them, guide them, and show up every day as caregivers, cheerleaders, chauffeurs, problem-solvers, and role models. In a community filled with remarkable women, may these simple love notes remind every mom just how special the role she plays truly is.

APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS

Decorate Your Space With a DIY Floral Design

Spring: the days grow longer, weather turns warmer, and the earth’s greenery starts to make its reappearance. During this time, flowers shoot up from the ground in a ballet of colors and movement. Walking outside becomes a cherished moment to breathe the fresh air and immerse yourself in lush surroundings. Being inside your home turns dreary and dull, everything that thrives is now outside, but this can easily be remedied. Why not bring some life inside? Make a spring floral bouquet to lighten up your space. Flowers add color and character to any room that needs a little lift, and our step-by-step guide will inspire you to create something grand.

Supplies:

• Flowers of your choice

• Scissors

• Twine or floral tape

• Ribbon (optional)

• Decorative paper (optional)

• Bouquet sleeve (optional)

Directions:

Step 1: When creating a beautiful floral arrangement, the first thing to do is decide on a color scheme and prepare the flowers.  Have fun deciding what colors you want to play with. Perhaps go pastel for spring or match the hues to other decor items in your house. Once you have picked your flowers, you need to do a little prep work. First, remove extra leaves and damaged petals from the stems. Then make a fresh diagonal cut to the bottom of all the flowers. This allows each bloom to soak up as much water as they need.

Step 2: Now it’s arranging time — think focal and filler. The best way to start the arranging process is by choosing your most interesting or favorite flowers — this will be your focal point. Hold the focal flower(s) upright and add your supporting blooms around it. Make sure to turn the bouquet as you build so that the design is as desired. Once this is complete, add your filler flowers to finalize the look. Filler options include baby’s breath, ivy, fern, eucalyptus and more.

Step 3: Let’s get ready to tie. Once you’ve arranged your bouquet, tie all the stems together using twine or floral tape. If using twine, we recommend securing it in a small bow in case you would like to rearrange at any given time. Floral tape is easy to move on and off for this purpose as well.

Step 4: Add the finishing touches. At this point, you are almost done with your bouquet and all that’s left is embellishments. There are so many ways to further adorn your creation: one way we love is to wrap it in fun decorative paper or put it in a special sleeve made just for flowers. If this idea isn’t for you, we recommend going to Pinterest for inspiration. Just remember, whatever way you choose to decorate your bouquet, you will end with a personalized piece made with love and care.

DAVID KELLER

I love what I do, and after more than 40 years in South Bay real estate, that passion still drives me every day. I’ve built my career on strong relationships, trust, and a deep understanding of this community. I know the South Bay like the back of my hand—every neighborhood, every hidden gem—and I use that insight to help guide my clients with confidence.

Real estate is never one-size-fits-all. Every transaction is different, and I pride myself on staying a step ahead— anticipating challenges, communicating clearly, and keeping everything moving smoothly. The relationships I’ve built with agents throughout the South Bay, based on mutual respect, often help create opportunities and solutions that truly benefit my clients.

I’m proud to lead a team that shares my high standards, strong work ethic, and belief that the process should be not only seamless, but enjoyable. We genuinely care about the people we work with, and that shows in how we approach every transaction.

Living and working in the South Bay, I appreciate everything this community offers—from the coastal lifestyle to the sense of connection it brings.

I stay energized by being active, my partner Gina Bradley and I love spending time outdoors, biking, hiking, and enjoying all the simple things that make this area so special.

At the end of the day, I’m grateful for the trust my clients place in me. Helping people find a place to call home—and being part of that journey—is what makes this work so meaningful.

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

A RECIPE FROM A CUP FULL OF SASS

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY TINNIN

This Berry Bruschetta is a delightful twist on the classic bruschetta that we all love. This version uses fruit, bringing a sweet element to the traditionally savory dish. This simple, yet beautiful appetizer could be enjoyed at your next brunch, shower or Mother’s Day celebration. But let’s be honest—you don’t need an excuse to enjoy this delectable dish!

INGREDIENTS:

• 12 baguette slices

• Extra virgin olive oil (for brushing)

• 4 oz cream cheese

• 1/4 cup Fruit and Honey Triple Berry Spread (or any fruit spread of your choice)

• 1/3 cup fresh strawberries, sliced

• 1/3 cup fresh blueberries

• 2 oz fruit cheese (such as Wensleydale with Autumn Fruit), crumbled

• Fresh rosemary for garnish

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. Lightly brush the front and back of the baguette slices with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

4. Once the baguette slices are cool, spread a generous layer of cream cheese over each slice.

6. Add sliced strawberries and a few blueberries, allowing the vibrant colors to pop. (A great place to find fresh fruit is our local staple, Crystal & Rich’s Produce.)

7. Crumble the fruit cheese over the top for an added layer of richness and depth.

8. Garnish with fresh Rosemary if desired.

9. Serve and enjoy!

HOW COULD A DSCR LOAN 1 HELP YOU?

Mortgage can help you clear hurdles to reaching investment goals through a Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR) loan.

WHAT IS A DSCR LOAN?

A DSCR loan is approved based on a property's ability to generate income (its debt service coverage ratio) rather than a borrower's personal income. The financial equation below is used to help assess the property's ability to generate enough income to cover its debt obligations.2

DSCR = NET OPERATING INCOME DEBT SERVICE

HOW IS DSCR CALCULATED?

DSCR is calculated by dividing the Net Operating Income (NOI), also known as its total profitability, by the total annual Debt Service. A DSCR greater than 1.0 indicates that a property produces more income than necessary to meet its debt requirements.2

WHAT ARE SOME FACTORS THAT AFFECT DSCR?

• Rental income

• Operating expenses

• Interest rates

WHO ARE DSCR LOANS MOST USEFUL FOR?

1. Real estate investors

2. Self-employed borrowers

3. Investors with multiple properties

4. LLCs and corporations
