LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year, Redondo Beach! January arrives with a sense of possibility, inviting us to pause, breathe, and imagine what’s ahead. It’s a moment to reflect on the past year and honor our accomplishments while looking forward. In that spirit, our Health & Wellness Issue highlights three extraordinary community members guiding us toward greater balance, vitality, and health—along with tips for building healthier habits and understanding wellness. This month, you’ll meet a dedicated local chiropractor whose work blends precise adjustments with deep muscle therapy and preventative care to help people move, feel, and live better. His passion for mindful movement reminds us to make the right adjustments— physically and in daily life—and he provides quick, easy exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles. We also feature a gifted acupuncturist who introduces us to the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine alongside Western practices, reflecting a powerful truth: wellness is not one path, but many. Her holistic approach encourages curiosity, openness, and the understanding that healing can look different for each of us. We are honored to share the story of a dermatologist-turned-entrepreneur who has stepped into a new chapter—proving that you can do anything you set your mind to. Her journey reminds us that when we face our fears and trust our passions, doors open and purpose unfolds in unexpected ways. As we begin a new year, our hope is that this issue inspires you—whether slowing down, trying something new, or treating yourself with more compassion. Wellness is a lifelong journey, and we walk it side by side as a community. Thank you for letting us be a part of your everyday inspiration. Here’s to a year filled with intention, courage, and radiant health. With full hearts,

MAKING THE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY A. ROLLO

Right

ADJUSTMENTS How Dr. Dibagohar’s Passion for Chiropractic Care is Changing Perceptions. At The ProActive Clinic in Redondo Beach, chiropractic care isn’t just about realigning the spine—it’s about making the right adjustments for the whole body, supporting long-term wellness, and changing how people think about chiropractic care. For Dr. Aryan Dibagohar D.C.—known to patients as Dr. Diba—this approach reflects both technical skill and human compassion. “I’ve always been good with my hands. I loved fixing things as a kid,” Dr. Diba recalled. “If the vacuum would break, I’d take it apart and figure out how to make it work again. When it came time to choose a career, I realized I could fix people’s bodies through chiropractic. I kind of put two of my passions together.” That passion led him to UCLA for his bachelor’s degree and then to the Southern California University of Health Sciences, where he earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree and graduated at the top of his class. At The ProActive Clinic, Dr. Diba’s treatments go far beyond a simple adjustment. Sessions combine electric muscle stimulation (ESTIM), moist heat therapy, deep muscle work, and precise adjustments. “A lot of chiropractors, all they do is adjust, and I could adjust you over and over and over, but if your muscles are tight, they just pull the bone out of place again,” he explains. Loosening muscles first ensures patients get lasting relief rather than a temporary fix. Even small adjustments, when applied in conjunction with a whole body approach, can have long-lasting effects—something Dr. Diba keeps in mind with every patient.

Patients notice the difference firsthand. “I’ve been seeing Dr. Diba once a month. [He] is very attentive and not just about adjustments. I think that the muscle work is more effective than just an adjustment. Compared to other chiropractors, that's something that’s emphasized here more,” said Jordan Balderes, a patient who commutes to the South Bay from mid-city Los Angeles. Dr. Diba treats a wide range of muscular issues, not just spine-related problems. For example, he’s helped patients with plantar fasciitis regain mobility by working on tight calves and muscles in the foot. He’s also treated people experiencing numbness and tingling in the arms—often misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel—by addressing tension in the neck and upper back. Another common issue is piriformis syndrome, where tight glute muscles irritate the sciatic nerve, making sitting or standing very painful—something Dr. Diba has personally experienced. And for those hunched over computers or working long hours, he helps relieve neck, upper-back, and lower-back tension that can lead to chronic discomfort. Chiropractic care is often misunderstood. Many people believe chiropractors only work on the spine and only perform adjustments, but Dr. Diba emphasizes that he can help nearly any muscular or skeletal issue. “People don’t even realize I could work on your calf. If you have plantar fasciitis and you're barely able to walk, we can work on that. We don’t have to adjust the body if you don’t feel comfortable with it,” he explained. CONTINUED >

He also distinguishes his practice from “drive-through” models that focus on speed and low cost. “They’ve taken out the whole [medical] history, the whole personal experience of a chiropractor, and the whole diagnosis portion of it. You go in, they adjust you, and wham bam, you’re out,” Dr. Diba said. Without proper diagnosis, underlying causes of pain can be missed or treated incorrectly. It’s not just about adjusting repeatedly—it’s about making the right adjustments that address the root issue. Preventative, proactive care is a cornerstone of Dr. Diba’s philosophy. Even patients without pain benefit from regular visits and daily stretches. “Usually everybody is out of alignment in some way or another…Once your bones are in place, when everything is optimal, when your nerves aren't being pinched because the bone is out of place, then you live your best life,” he noted. He also encourages a holistic lifestyle: clean diet, exercise, stretching, and monthly adjustments to maintain optimal alignment and wellness. Dr. Diba practices what he preaches, incorporating wellness into his own life.

Dr. Diba’s Top 3 Morning Stretches (Under 6 Minutes) LOW BACK

A warm welcome, every time, from Dr. Diba.

Lie on your back in bed or on the floor. Interlace your fingers behind one knee and gently pull it to your chest (or both knees if comfortable). Hold 15 seconds, breathing deeply. Repeat 3 times.

NECK Outside the clinic, Dr. Diba’s life revolves around family. He also enjoys a little retail therapy, especially shopping for clothes and shoes. He and his wife—a chiropractor and acupuncturist—are raising two young daughters. “What I love most about being a dad is probably putting my best foot forward and showing them as much love as I can and watching them grow. It really is satisfying,” he said. Their five-year-old Maltipoo, Louis, rounds out the family. Even with a busy practice, Dr. Diba makes time for family walks and small daily wellness rituals, like stretching and taking a multivitamin. At The ProActive Clinic, Dr. Diba shows that a single, carefully executed adjustment—paired with personalized muscle work and education about preventative strategies—can transform not only posture and mobility, but overall well-being. Thoughtful changes—whether spinal, muscular, or lifestyle adjustments—are the right adjustments for lasting health, leaving patients feeling aligned, balanced, and ready to live their best lives.

Place your right hand on the left side of your head and tilt gently to the right until you feel a stretch. Hold 15 seconds. Switch sides and repeat. Do 3 rounds per side.

CHEST

Stand in a doorway with your right arm at shoulder height against the frame. Turn away until you feel a stretch. Hold 15 seconds. Repeat with your arm at a 45° angle, then switch sides. Do 3 rounds each.

BUILDING HEALTHIER HEAR FROM NASM-CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER ABOUT ESTABLISHING THE BEST HABITS ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNELL

The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around. How many times do your resolutions fall through each year? It can be challenging to build new habits and switch up routines if you’re looking for a change. That’s why we rounded up the best advice to establishing habits and making them stay for good. We spoke with Danielle Johnston, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)-certified personal trainer and aspiring kinesiologist, who broke down her top tips to maintaining healthy habits this new year.

16

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS

START WITH A SMALL HABIT AND MAKE IT SOMETHING YOU ENJOY

HABITS

Think 1-3 things maximum and then give yourself at least a month or two to apply the change. If you like to eat and cook, maybe try a new recipe or browse a cookbook in the library or bookstore for inspiration. If you like fashion, maybe try cleaning out a section of your closet (i.e. tops, bottoms, shoes, etc) to make way for 1 new piece. If you like being outdoors, maybe you try adding in just a 5 minute walk down the road.

IF YOU MISS A DAY, TRY AGAIN

If you miss a day or make a mistake with whatever resolution you’re working on, take that next opportunity to try again. Danielle uses the goal to eat healthier as an example. Health can be interpreted in many different ways but if you can take the small first step of looking at ingredients, that alone can make a world’s difference in the recipe you use so maybe you don’t even have to alter or substitute it. Or if your goal is to snack less but one day you snack more, don’t wave the flag and sabotage your efforts. Take a minute to breathe through the moment and then move on, enjoying the ebb and flow of health instead of going all in or nothing. Starting small allows you to adjust everyday habits that will, with time, transition to lifestyle changes.

CREATE 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESOLUTIONS

Danielle says to create 1 health resolution, 1 personal resolution, and 1 professional resolution as it is the best format to better yourself in multiple realms instead of just physical health. Too often, we get caught up in this “New Year New Me” mindset and create a list of things you want to change or start doing. But as they get lost in the busy to-do list of life and we forget,

“The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around.” we can also feel like a failure and revert to “I’ll try again tomorrow or next year.” But what if you don’t have to start over, just keep going.

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS AND VISUALIZE YOUR FUTURE

Whether you keep a notebook of your habit building, or keep track on your phone, it is important to acknowledge the personal progress made. This will also help you see the future that you want to build as you make more desirable changes in your life. If you want to track how you feel after working out, it will serve as a reflection on the progress made through what has been written down. This will encourage you to continue pushing for your goals!

THE HARMONY OF HEALTH ARTICLE BY LESLEY A. ROLLO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Growing up in suburban Chicago, Jillian Wang was always on the move. “I was very much into sports,” she said. From swim and track teams to gym class, staying active was just part of Jillian’s life. Along the way, she picked up an early fascination with the human body. “I think it’s so cool, just the way that everything works.” After studying kinesiology and psychology at the University of Illinois Chicago, Jillian moved to California in 2010, seeking sunshine, an active lifestyle, and a new beginning. A series of sales jobs followed, giving her unexpected confidence in running a business — a skill that would later support her professional journey.

18

But it was her own health that led her to her true calling. In her 20s, Jillian experienced autoimmune issues, including alopecia. “Your hair starts to fall out in patches. It was a little scary, but it brought me back into focus: your health is the most important to you… I started to find content on Chinese medicine. I always say the universe brought me here.” Through her exploration of TCM, Jillian became fascinated by how centuries-old practices could address modern health challenges. Each discovery reinforced her belief in treating the root cause rather than just symptoms. Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, is a holistic system that uses acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, and lifestyle guidance to keep the body in balance and support its healing processes. Jillian fell in love with TCM’s comprehensive approach. “It has so many benefits, and it just makes more sense to me. I’m not against Western medicine at all… but a lot of gaps are filled with Chinese medicine.” Rooted in thousands of years of practice, TCM offers an integrated view of the body and mind, emphasizing prevention and long-term wellness rather than reactive treatment alone. At her clinic in Redondo Beach, AcuPremier Acupuncture, Jillian combines acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and nutrition guidance to support clients at every life stage. From customized herbal formulas to tailored acupuncture sessions, she ensures each patient’s treatment fits their lifestyle and health goals, making the experience both personal and empowering. For women, TCM offers centuries of focused insight. “Women in Western medicine were largely excluded from research until the ’90s… In Chinese medicine, there’s been a women’s health specialty since the seventh century — over 1,400 years of specialized medicine with diagnosis, treatments, and formulas.” While particularly useful for hormonal transitions like perimenopause and menopause, these principles of balance and core healing benefit people of all ages. Jillian emphasizes that while she often works with women, TCM truly supports everyone. Through simple, intentional lifestyle practices combined with acupuncture and herbal guidance, she empowers clients to take an active role in their lifelong wellness journey. “In Chinese medicine, we talk a lot about balance,” explained Jillian. “We identify the root imbalances, where the problem is, and then we address that in bits. Our bodies are designed to heal themselves. And we want to, in the treatment, support that process, and not counter what the body

is doing.” By balance, she means supporting the body’s natural systems rather than simply masking symptoms. TCM addresses the fundamental imbalances that can lead to discomfort, whether from hormonal shifts, nutritional deficiencies, or subtle disruptions that accumulate over time. One example Jillian often points to is inflammation—not as an enemy but rather as a vital signal from the body. By addressing the underlying causes, she helps patients navigate these natural processes safely and effectively, supporting long-term health instead of quick, but temporary, fixes. Jillian emphasizes that TCM works alongside modern medical approaches rather than replacing them. “I explain the Western approach, and then the Chinese medicine approach… We’re looking at different angles. Because we are more holistic, we get better results. It shouldn’t be an either-or thing.” To support women navigating hormonal changes, TCM offers tools to nourish the body’s natural rhythms. “The yin is a broad term that encompasses minerals, fluids, fats, female hormones, even collagen… As a general rule, the yin becomes depleted as we age. We can’t stop that process, but we can slow it and support it.” Through diet, lifestyle changes, and herbal formulas — some centuries old, some custom-made — Jillian helps all her clients maintain balance and vitality.

Guiding care for an expectant mother.

In addition to herbs and dietary guidance, Jillian uses acupuncture — even for those wary of needles. “We have a wide variety of sizes and techniques… We even have baby needles that are completely painless.” She jokes that the options are similar to a workout: “We can do a light jog or we can do a HIIT workout. They're both going to give benefits.” Jillian’s mission extends beyond the clinic. She’s creating resources to help people understand TCM in ways that make sense in modern life. “The only thing we are missing is translation. It’s not mystical or weird. It’s actually all the things that everyone recommends in tidbits but in a different understanding… If I can help people relate to the medicine a little more, they can experience all of the benefits [TCM] has to offer.” Her approach is simple: small, intentional adjustments can transform health and quality of life. “My whole philosophy is: what do we want to do for you to feel good, not just temporarily, but really, truly feel good?” With her combination of personal experience, professional expertise, and respect for ancient wisdom, Jillian Wang is helping people achieve harmony of health — guiding them through the stages of life with balance, understanding, and the enduring power of TCM.

The New Frontier of Health U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

22

T R E N D SE T T E R | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive selfcriticism to continuously raise the standard of care.” To hear the extended conversation with Dr. Kyle Gillett, scan the QR code for an exclusive podcast episode.

RUNNING TOWARD the Lion Dr. Manju Dawkins delivers her keynote speech at the CalDerm Symposium.

SETTING GOALS, FACING FEAR, AND BELIEVING IN WHAT YOU’RE MEANT TO DO. ARTICLE BY LESLEY A. ROLLO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Attending Heal.LA, a nonprofit accelerator supporting science and tech innovations for the public good.

Some people move through life with an almost instinctive willingness to step toward the things that scare them. For Dr. Manju Dawkins—dermatologist and co-founder/CEO of Thimble—this courage didn’t come from never feeling fear. It came from learning to act despite it, trusting the inner voice that tells her what she’s meant to do. Her personal journey with fear became clearer after she first heard a speaker at a business retreat say: “When you see the lion, you run towards the lion.” She realized how often fear had quietly shaped her choices—and how she found the courage to push forward anyway. This was a recurring narrative in college, where moments of doubt from others became opportunities to prove herself. When coaches questioned her ability to compete at the Division 1 level, she answered, “Oh,

Jordan Elfalan, all smiles, sporting Thimble’s Recover patch.

Taking in the calm and joy of the ocean.

“The ocean is so serene and grounding. Everything else can be chaos, but then you realize… this is literally paradise.” I’m going to try.” She walked on to the Columbia women’s basketball team, earned a roster spot, and became team captain her senior year. Academically, the pattern continued. A dean at Columbia told her not to apply to medical school because she wouldn’t get in. “But I did it anyway, and I did get into medical school,” Dawkins explained. At the University of Maryland, she was told dermatology was out of reach. “My dean there was like, don’t apply to dermatology, you’re not going to get in.” She took a research year, applied, and was admitted. In each case, Dawkins displayed how courage meant acting despite fear. CONTINUED >

That same courage now shows up in her everyday life—balancing family, career, and entrepreneurship. Dr. Dawkins lives in Redondo Beach with her husband and company co-founder, and their two daughters. Between raising their girls and running a growing business, moments of feeling overwhelmed are inevitable. Whenever that happens, she turns to the beach for peace and perspective. “The ocean is so serene and grounding. Everything else can be chaos, but then you realize… this is literally paradise.” The calm and joy she finds at the ocean nourishes her overall wellness. Wellness, to her, is “Balance… the body, but also the mind and spirit… It’s the balance of being aware and paying attention to all parts of that.” That sense of balance guided Dr. Dawkins’ decision to shift from full-time to part-time dermatology, allowing her to dedicate her energy to Thimble, the company she and her husband founded to focus on reducing the pain and stress associated with needle procedures. Thimble began with a moment every new parent understands: wanting to protect your child from pain. After watching her four-week-old daughter receive her first shots, Dr. Dawkins felt “betrayed” on her baby’s behalf. “That was the moment that

I was like, this is not right.” As a dermatology resident, she had access to numbing creams—an advantage most parents didn’t have. “It was a total game changer… but then it’s like, what is everybody else doing? That was the privilege that I had.” Years later, research revealed the scale of the problem: “Needle fear has really skyrocketed… it rose to 25% in 2012… now… 63.2% of adults.” Thimble’s mission is clear: “Everyone deserves pain management.” Dr. Dawkins and her talented team created Prepare, a fast-acting numbing patch used prior to injection, and Recover, a plantbased patch to reduce post-injection soreness and bruising. An app offering researchbacked emotional support tools is currently in beta. “Our goal is to change the standard of care for needle procedures… we want everyone to have the option to have pain management before, during, and after.” At its core, Thimble is about compassion. “Love heals… That’s what I hope Thimble is. It’s just a simple way of putting a hand on someone’s arm and being like, I know this was hard. I hope this makes it better.” If there’s a consistent thread in Dr. Dawkins’ life, it’s courage—the quiet, persistent kind. She didn’t expect that pursuing her entrepreneurial goal and starting her company would become the very path

“The journey of building this company has forced me to face a thousand and one of my fears.” — Dr. Manju Dawkins

that forced her to confront her deepest fears. “I was driven by fear my whole life. I was afraid of everything… The journey of building this company has forced me to face a thousand and one of my fears: fear of judgement, fear of public speaking, fear of being seen, fear of being on social media, all those things.” Dawkins is living proof that fear does not have to control you. The retreat mantra now reflects her lived experience: “When you see the lion, you run towards the lion.” For anyone afraid to pursue their big goals—a new habit, a career shift, a creative dream—her advice is simple: “Get a really nice notebook and a really good pen… and let your creativity flow… Ideas in your head are in your head, but ideas on paper are already realized.” When the path feels overwhelming, she returns to one principle: “When you think about this, this, and this, it’s so overwhelming… All we can do is the next step.” Reflecting on her life now, she laughs: “If I looked back, even five years, I would say there’s no way you can do any of those things… but we all literally can do anything we want to if we just open our mind to the possibility.” Her journey—from walk-on basketball player to dermatologist to co-founder—is not about defying odds; it’s about trusting the quiet knowing within. “I think each of us knows what we’re meant for,” she said. “You filter out the noise, and you take the next step. That’s it.” And when fear appears—and it will— run toward the lion.
