It’s hard to believe 2025 is almost behind us. Our very first issue of Redondo Beach City Lifestyle debuted in June, and now we’re thrilled to celebrate our December Giving Issue. We’re deeply grateful to our business partners—you gave us your support, enabling us to share the stories that make our city and the South Bay so special.

This issue is all about the heart of the season… Giving. We spoke with a wealth management advisor about how year-end financial planning can itself be an act of giving—whether by taking time to reflect on your own situation, supporting charities, or preparing for future milestones. We were also inspired by a local mom who, in supporting her young autistic son, founded a grassroots organization to guide other parents with autistic children and raise funds.
Because the holidays are also about finding thoughtful gifts for the people you love, we couldn’t resist putting together a gift guide showcasing some of our favorite local artists and businesses. We also included festive recipes to add a fresh touch to your holiday traditions.
As the year comes to a close, we hope your holidays are filled with the very best gifts of all—time, laughter, and meaningful moments with family, friends, and your community. Thank you for letting us be part of your journey this year. See you in 2026!
With full hearts,

Sean Mounce, WestPac Wealth Partners
As 2025 winds down, Sean Mounce, Wealth Management Advisor at WestPac Wealth Partners, shares his take on financial moves to consider before yearend. From tax strategies and retirement contributions to charitable giving and planning for major 2026 milestones, he offers insights for closing this year and starting the next one with a coordinated financial plan.
REDONDO BEACH CITY LIFESTYLE: AS WE APPROACH THE END OF 2025, WHAT ARE IMPORTANT FINANCIAL STEPS INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESS OWNERS SHOULD CONSIDER BEFORE THE YEAR CLOSES?
SEAN MOUNCE: The end of the year is the perfect time to check your financial playbook. For individuals, that means reviewing investments for tax opportunities, making sure retirement contributions and required distributions are handled, and updating plans after any major life changes. Business owners should also look at how money flows between their business and personal finances, confirm they are maximizing deductions, and revisit succession or exit strategies. The goal is not one move in isolation. It is making sure legal, tax, and financial strategies are coordinated so money is working as efficiently as possible.
RBCL: ARE THERE ANY COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE AT YEAR-END WHEN MANAGING INVESTMENTS OR RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS?
SEAN: One of the most common mistakes is making changes without a plan. Chasing investment fads, reacting emotionally to market swings, or trying to time the market often backfires. Another mistake is neglecting account structure. People sometimes hold the wrong assets in taxable accounts versus retirement accounts, which can quietly increase taxes over time. For business owners, a frequent oversight is not leveraging the flexibility they have. Because they control their own W-2 income, retirement plan design is directly tied to that number. Done correctly, this gives them options to maximize contributions and deductions, but too often that opportunity gets missed. The key is to step
back and coordinate these decisions rather than making last minute, reactive moves.
RBCL: IF SOMEONE ONLY HAD TIME TO DO ONE FINANCIAL MOVE BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR, WHAT SHOULD IT BE?
SEAN: Understanding the tax impact of income for the year. For individuals, that’s knowing their tax bracket and whether it makes sense to accelerate deductions or income. For business owners, it’s ensuring their compensation mix, including salary, distributions, and retirement contributions, is set intentionally before December 31. This is an area where coordination pays off. Meeting with a financial advisor, CPA, and attorney can help ensure that decisions are working in harmony. A well-planned adjustment here can often provide more benefit than any last-minute investment change.

RBCL: HOW CAN CONTRIBUTING TO RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS LIKE IRAS OR 401(K)S HELP REDUCE TAXABLE INCOME BEFORE YEAR-END?
SEAN: Contributing to tax-advantaged retirement accounts can be a powerful way to manage taxable income, but it should not be
“FINANCIAL PLANNING IS NOT JUST ABOUT SELECTING INVESTMENTS. IT IS ABOUT MAKING SURE EVERY PART OF FINANCIAL LIFE IS CONNECTED AND ALIGNED WITH PERSONAL GOALS.”
viewed in isolation. Taxes need to be considered over time. Deferring income today at a lower rate might not always be the best move if future rates or required distributions change the picture. For individuals, traditional IRAs and 401(k)s reduce taxable income this year, while Roth contributions create future taxfree withdrawals. Business owners may have more options. Defined benefit plans or customized retirement plan designs can allow for much larger deductions and provide more control over contributions based on the W-2 income they set. These strategies should be used intentionally considering both current and future impacts.
RBCL: WHAT CHARITABLE GIVING STRATEGIES SHOULD PEOPLE CONSIDER?
SEAN: Charitable giving is about generosity, but it can also be a thoughtful part of year-end financial planning. Individuals can make direct donations, bunch contributions into a single year to maximize deductions, or use donor advised funds to control timing and impact. Business owners have additional flexibility. Contributions can be made personally or through the business, and certain strategies can also align with succession or

estate plans. An effective approach is to give intentionally, ensuring that donations fit within overall tax, estate, and financial strategies.
RBCL: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START THE NEW YEAR WITH A STRONGER FINANCIAL PLAN?
SEAN: Step back and look at the entire picture. For individuals, that means reviewing goals, cash flow, investments, and retirement plans to make sure each piece works together. Business owners should do the same, but with the added lens of how personal and business finances interact. Salary, distributions, retirement plan design, and long-term wealth transfer all need to be aligned. At WestPac, our approach is to act like a personal CFO, coordinating legal, tax, and financial strategies so the plan is actionable and optimized from the start.
RBCL: BEYOND INVESTMENTS, WHAT FINANCIAL HABITS SHOULD INDIVIDUALS FOCUS ON AS THEY HEAD INTO THE NEW YEAR?
SEAN: Strong financial habits start with clarity and consistency. Track cash flow, review budgets, and prioritize saving, since consistent savings often matter more than chasing high investment returns. Becoming a systematic saver, even in small amounts, compounds over time and sets the foundation for long term goals. It is also important to regularly review insurance coverage, update estate documents, and coordinate with advisors to ensure plans keep pace with life changes. For business owners, this means treating personal and business finances as interconnected. Payroll, distributions, and retirement contributions should be managed with both sides in mind. Small, consistent habits today reduce surprises and create a smoother path forward.
RBCL: HOW CAN FAMILIES PLAN FOR MAJOR LIFE EVENTS IN 2026 SUCH AS BUYING A HOME, PAYING FOR COLLEGE, OR RETIREMENT?
SEAN: Planning for major life events starts with seeing the full picture. Families should map out goals such as buying a home, funding college, or retiring, and understand how each interacts with cash flow, savings, and taxes. Building a timeline and prioritizing objectives helps clarify what is realistic and when to act. For education, tax advantaged strategies such as 529 plans, UTMAs and juvenile life insurance may play a role, depending on the
family’s needs. For business owners, it is also important to consider how personal and business finances intersect. Distributions, compensation, and retirement contributions can all affect a family’s ability to reach these goals. Coordinating with advisors can help ensure that every decision is weighed from legal, tax, and financial perspectives, so families can move forward with confidence rather than guesswork.
RBCL: ANY OTHER INSIGHTS THAT YOU WANT TO PROVIDE?
SEAN: Financial planning is not just about selecting investments. It is about making sure every part of financial life is connected and aligned with personal goals. For individuals, that might mean consistent savings and protection strategies, including estate planning and wealth transfer. For business owners, it involves understanding how decisions inside the business affect personal wealth, taxes, and long-term planning. For high-net-worth families, it often includes estate and charitable planning to manage both taxes and legacy. No single advisor can cover every angle in isolation. True efficiency and confidence come from coordination among financial, tax, and legal professionals, with a trusted advisor helping to ensure the pieces work together. That coordination is where real value is created.

One Mother’s Mission to Help Parents Navigate Uncharted Waters.

When Katy Jackson learned her two-year-old son, Hendrix, was diagnosed with autism, she felt overwhelmed, suddenly facing a world of acronyms, therapies, specialists, and decisions she never expected.
“I know it’s a big community and I’ve known autistic people my whole life, but I never really knew how challenging it is. There are no directions given for this,” explained Katy.
Katy admits she dove in without a road map. She read everything she could find, including works by Temple Grandin, who helped her understand autism not as something to “cure” but
as a different way of experiencing the world. That perspective became her compass as she learned how to communicate with Hendrix, now five years old, who is non-verbal.
As she pieced together resources, Katy realized other parents were just as lost as she had been.
Recognizing the need for guidance, she began sharing her notes—step-by-step guides for overwhelmed families on how to access respite care, In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS), regional center services, and much more. Her phone number became a lifeline for these families.
Hendrix’s love of water also became a guiding force in Katy’s journey. It led her to Surfers Healing, a nonprofit surf camp for children with autism, co-founded in 1996 by Israel “Izzy” and Danielle Paskowitz after they discovered the calming power of the ocean on their own autistic son, Isaiah.
Inspired by the impact of Surfers Healing, Katy launched Local Autism Warriors, a separate grassroots organization that provides support and community for families with autistic children. Local

Autism Warriors connects parents to resources, offers guidance and raises funds to support Surfers Healing, ensuring the surf camps remain free for families.
“Hendrix is so active, and I knew he loved the water. He loves the beach, ocean, river, lake—I mean, he likes puddles of water,” expressed Katy.
“Surfers Healing was recommended to me, and I got involved with them. I love the Paskowitz family, so I’ve gotten the community involved and held fundraisers.”
Over the past three decades, Surfers Healing has provided free surf camps for thousands of children with autism across the country, from San Diego to Rhode Island—and even in Mexico and Puerto Rico. But for Katy, it’s not just about surfboards and waves—it’s about dignity, joy, and inclusion. As noted on Surfers Healing’s website, “Autism parents are always hearing about what their children cannot do. But at a Surfers Healing camp, it’s all about what their kids can do.”
Looking ahead, Katy hopes to grow Local Autism Warriors. She hosts an annual gala in Redondo
“…I never really knew how challenging it is. There are no directions given for this.”

Beach that blends fundraising for Surfers Healing with raising awareness about people with autism. “This year the gala was more focused on having kids there,” said Katy. “I had a whole sensory area, and they all got sensory toys. Some of the surfers came to the event and interacted with the kids, so when the kids went to their first day of camp, they remembered them—that’s the equivalent of a celebrity to them. I think that’s really cool.”
At its core, Local Autism Warriors remains rooted in Katy’s spirit of giving—making sure no parent feels
alone. She knows firsthand the difference a simple resource, a supportive conversation, or even just a knowing smile can make.
“I wish there was a universal hand signal for autism parent to autism parent or, something to be like, hey, you’re okay.”
This December, as we celebrate giving in all its forms, Katy reminds us that sometimes the greatest gift isn’t money or material—it’s understanding, compassion, and the willingness to walk alongside someone on their journey.

Katy Jackson and Local Autism Warriors are here to help—whether you need guidance, resources, or just someone to talk to, email localautismwarriors@gmail.com. You can also support the cause by attending the annual Santa Surfing Competition in Dana Point on Saturday, December 13, benefiting Surfers Healing. Visit surfingsantacontest.org for details.

DIY Gift Wrapping That Stands Out During
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

‘Tis the season to get crafty, clever or characterized! Wellwrapped holiday packages create immediate enthusiasm and somehow seem to make gifts more meaningful. Whether going for shiny, vintage, colorful, rustic, playful or eco-friendly impressions, the following are some Do-It-Yourself gift-wrapping ideas to make the wrapping process even more satisfying. Simply applying jute twine to gifts provides a ‘less is more’ vibe.
ADD NATURAL TOUCHES TO CRAFT PAPER:
For gifts with a rustic, organic feel, use seasonal accents, such as sprigs, pine cones and cinnamon sticks, tied up with twine, encircling recycled paper for the wrapping.
FIRST INITIAL DECORATION:
In lieu of a gift tag, attach an oversized paper mâché letter of the recipient’s first initial to the top of the box. The letter then can serve as customized décor, too.
POLKA DOTS:
Wrap gifts in plain craft paper and then cut out big, multicolored polka dots to glue down. It’s hard not to smile at big, bright dots.
CARDBOARD BOX SNOWPERSON:
Wrap three or four boxes in white paper, with different gifts inside, and then stack them. Tape the boxes together,

tapering to the top. Glue buttons on the bottom ones, create a snowperson’s face on the top one, with carrot nose cut out of orange paper. Attach a real hat, if desired. Tie wider, festive bow around the snowperson’s ‘neck.’ Add a real corncob pipe for a bonus finishing touch, if preferred.
MINI TREE GIFT WRAPPING:
Pine needles and small tips of real tree branches make quick and easy mini Christmas trees that can be glued onto Christmas gifts. They will smell nice, too.
BOOK PAGE WRAPPING PAPER:
Repurpose old book pages by cutting out
shapes of dreidels, snowflakes, ornaments, candles or reindeer to paste on gifts.
DIY STAMP WRAPPING PAPER:
Wrap gifts in solid colors of paper. Secure ink stamps and an ink pad in a themed color(s), and stamp the paper as much or as little as desired.
UNBOXED:
Apply other types of containers, rather than boxes or bags, for gift wrapping; examples: canisters, pillow cases, baskets, fabric scraps, maps, glass containers, towels, blankets, scarves, Bento bags (also called triangle bags or origami bags).

Optional toppings:

Brew your espresso or strong coffee. Heat and froth your milk. In your glass, add 2 tablespoons of the gingerbread syrup. Pour in the espresso, then the steamed milk, stirring gently to combine. Spoon frothed milk or whipped cream on top. Dust with cinnamon or nutmeg.
Optional: Rim the glass with crushed gingerbread cookie crumbs for extra flair.
