VISION IS OUR FOCUS
Since 1968, Shepherd Eye Center has proudly provided Southern Nevada with the latest in eye care technology and advancement. Our practice has cultivated a highly trained staff of physicians to take care of your eye care needs to help you see your world more clearly.
In the practice of pain management, there is never a “one size fits all” solution to help patients mitigate their pain.
At the Neuropathy and Pain Center of Las Vegas, our providers focus on each patient individually, and create a personized treatment plan to suit their specific needs. From nonsurgical modalities to regenerative medicine, we help harness the body’s amazing ability to heal itself, which in turn can allow patients to avoid invasive surgeries.
Kids & Pets!
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits.
This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy that children and pets bring to our families and the significant impact they make on our communities.
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment, and we are happy to highlight the best for our kids in this issue.
The special kind of companionship that pets give us can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love and the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
I am a pet lover myself, and my pets are always my fur babies. I have a soft spot for senior dogs and cats, who are usually overlooked and unwanted.
Three and half years ago, I adopted little Rose Belle (pictured with me above). She was 12 years old and came from a hoarding situation. I gave her first teeth cleaning, made her feel safe, and showered her with love, kisses, and hugs every single day. When she crossed the rainbow bridge this past February, my heart broke, and I am still working on healing from it. People usually ask me where I get the courage to adopt seniors, knowing that they will not be with me for too long. My answer is, “It’s not about me; it’s about giving them a chance to live their golden years with safety, love, dignity, and warmth.”
I hope that this month’s stories can fill you with inspiration and joy!
From my heart to yours,

A LEGACY OF DIGNITY
ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THOMASON CONSTRUCTION INCLas Vegas business owner brings experience and passion to every project
Las Vegas Native and married father of two, Kenny Thomason, knew what he wanted to do since he was little.
"I remember during career day, other kids were coming in as lawyers or doctors,” said Kenny. “I came in with a hard hat and an old pager. I knew I wanted to be just like my dad."
Today, Kenny has successfully followed in his father's footsteps. He’s the 4th generation to be part of the construction and plumbing industry in Las Vegas.
In 2011, Kenny Thomason established Thomason Construction Inc. It’s a family milestone to be the first to start his own company. Soon after, he founded Dignity Plumbing, a company dedicated to turning dishonesty into dignity within the industry.
"Our name says it all," said Kenny. "We are not out to be the cheapest. We are out to provide the best value to our customers. We do not believe in up-charges or adding unnecessary services."
Dignity Plumbing earned the National "Best of the Best” award for its quality service and integrity. As a premier full-service plumbing company, they offer commercial and residential services throughout Southern Nevada.
Thomason started Dignity Plumbing because he wanted to ensure his customers get honest and reliable service in the Las Vegas Valley. He learned integrity firsthand from generations of family in the industry.
"My great grandfather came here to build railroads and was recruited to work on the Hoover Dam," said Thomason. For several decades many members of his family have been a major part of the construction on the Strip.
“I grew up on construction sites on the Las Vegas Strip, fortunate to work alongside my dad, uncles, and grandpa,” said Kenny, whose most memorable projects are the Eastside Cannery and the Hard Rock Hotel expansion.
As Dignity Plumbing continues to grow, Thomason envisions his company becoming a nationwide brand, giving more opportunities to those who have a passion for the industry and vision.
"What I am trying to do here is teach the next generation of tradesmen that you are not less than. You are doing great work. People want to work with a business they can trust, and my staff is helping me give them just that. If you have a great thing going, it's selfish to keep it to yourself. The more I grow, the more I want to bring all of my people up with me," said Kenny. "As a business, we are building and maintaining Las Vegas in order to better the community."
“THE MORE I GROW, THE MORE I WANT TO BRING ALL OF MY PEOPLE UP WITH ME,” SAID KENNY. “AS A BUSINESS, WE ARE BUILDING AND MAINTAINING LAS VEGAS IN ORDER TO BETTER THE COMMUNITY.”

Via Brasil Steakhouse shares family story and secrets to success
ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF VIA BRASIL
“Be yourself. Be a genuine person and truly love what you do. That’s the secret to keeping your customers coming back.”
For Anna Gomes, who runs Via Brasil Steakhouse with her husband, Adam Gomes, she said that the “secret to success” came in a big part from her father-in-law, Luis Gomes, who helped the couple open their restaurant in 2008.
Anna Gomes said Luis has long made a name for himself as a celebrated restaurateur in New York City after moving to the U.S. from his native Brazil. And that's where her husband found his love and passion for this culinary career.
“My husband learned from when he was a kid how to run the restaurant business by being there with his dad,” said Gomes. “His father opened the original Via Brasil in 1978 in New York. Adam has done everything there, from working in the kitchen to being a bartender before becoming a manager. When we decided to open our restaurant in Las Vegas, it was the best decision we ever made."
Anna Gomes says when it comes to standing out as a dining destination in a city like Las Vegas, your food has to be excellent, and she said in the 15 years in business, they made sure that every time a customer returns, they get the same attentive service and also the best quality food they expect from a world-class dining establishment.
“It’s really all about the flavors,” Gomes said. “For Adam and his family, it’s all about the food. It has to be amazing. That’s what their father had instilled in them. Everything had to be made from scratch.”
The restaurant, located in the Red Rock area at 1255 South Fort Apache Road, is open seven days a week, with dinner service nightly and brunch on the weekend. The Rodizio dinner menu allows guests to feast on customized a la carte and allyou-can-eat prime cuts of meats, including Rib Eye Special, BBQ Pork Ribs, Short Ribs, Picanha, Grilled Shrimp, and Lamb Chops. Diners can also enjoy an expansive salad bar featuring the freshest ingredients, including Via Brasil’s famous watermelon salad, Brazilian tilapia ceviche, potato salad, and Caprese Salad. Brunch service has also been popular with locals, especially on holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, with an expansive menu offering more than 50 dishes from delicious cuts of meat to crepes, omelets, and signature eggs Benedict.
“We are proud of the variety and the quality of the food we serve. But we know to gain a loyal clientele, we need to pay attention to every detail, and that means giving our guests the best possible service every time they visit. That’s why you will always see me there at the restaurant, saying hello to all the guests and making sure they have the best experience. We really do have the most amazing community here in Las Vegas.”
And Gomes has made sure she is giving back to the community that has helped support her business over the years. She and her husband are proud partners of local nonprofits, including Miracle Flights and Angels of Las Vegas. She has hosted a number of charitable events for these organizations, donating both food and funds for causes that are near to her heart.
This year, Via Brasil also began offering guests a Rodizio dining experience right in their own homes. The restaurant can now send a chef to your house with their pre-cut and pre-made famous cuts of prime meats, which the chef will then cook on-site along with any sides, appetizers, and other dishes guests order from the restaurant. Gomes and her team also recently launched a new line of sandwiches along with the famous empanadas. And there are plans for even more expansion in the future.
“We would love to one day open more restaurants serving these sandwiches and other graband-go items that can be picked up fast but still offer great quality and taste,” said Gomes. “We are excited for what’s to come, and we really believe what got us here is the lesson we learned from the beginning. That is to always give our customers the best experience so they will always be here to support us."
“IT’S REALLY ALL ABOUT THE FLAVORS. FOR ADAM AND HIS FAMILY, IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FOOD. IT HAS TO BE AMAZING. THAT’S WHAT THEIR FATHER HAD INSTILLED IN THEM.”

Your Neighbor, the Film Producer
ARTICLE BY KYLA SAWYER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANE ROBLES
Las Vegas is known for shining lights, thrilling nights, and anything in between. Filmmaking might be overlooked within the parade of activities this city has to offer, but rest assured, there is plenty of innovative storytelling happening in the Silver State.
Film Producer and Executive Producer Steven B. Mandel has resided in Summerlin for the past 22 years. He’s received at least six awards for his films and has worked alongside some notable figures within the industry. Despite his hard work and determination on the slow road to make Las Vegas a place where film can thrive, he keeps his attitude bright.
Mandel learned much of his craft through his apprenticeship with Producer Frank Capra Jr., son of three-time Oscar winner, Frank Capra. Putting his carefully honed talents to use, Mandel has gone on to produce/executive produce several films, all made here in Las Vegas, one of them being called ‘Luckey Quarter,’ a Stephen King short film that won the Dam Short Film Festival’s “Best Filmmaker” award. Another film Mandel co-produced, and executive produced, ‘Unwritten,’ won the Silver State Film Festival in 2019. His most recent film, ‘House In Time,’ recently won the Golden State Film Festival in Hollywood, California, for “Best Film
From an Original Screenplay.”
Alongside his many formidable crew members like Dale Neven, director of ‘Unwritten’ and ‘House In Time,’ Jeremy Settles, executive producer of ‘Unwritten’ and ‘House In Time,’ and Deanna Shapiro, producer of ‘House In Time,’ Mandel has been able to create films with originality that true creatives are proud to indulge. Not only were they up against major competition, but also time restraints and budget played a big part in the process of production. ‘House In Time’ had to be shot in one week, so the cast and crew worked as hard as they could from morning until night. Fortunately, all that hard work paid off when they won the award, and now ‘House In Time’ will be playing in select Galaxy Theatres in Nevada and four other surrounding states, adding to the roster of activities for a fun summer evening.
Mandel has created a home for himself and his two sons here in Summerlin, just minutes away from beautiful hiking trails. His devotion to film motivates Mandel to bring new opportunities for aspiring producers, filmmakers, and actors. With plans to create a hotel casino with a full studio and a new film sequel to ‘Unwritten,’ and a new film, ‘Laredo,’ in the works, Mandel assures this is just the beginning, stating, “There is a film community here. People are into independent films, and we want to expand that industry.”
“‘House In Time’ will be playing in select Galaxy Theatres in Nevada and four other surrounding states, adding to the roster of activities for a fun summer evening.”
Aiming for Possibilities
ACCELERATED LEARNING CLINIC & ACADEMY MEETS LEARNERS WHERE THEY ARE
ARTICLE BY KIM AMATO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARCY JOHNSON
Right around the corner, there is an education solution that you may not have been aware of for children with autism and other developmental disabilities. Accelerated Learning Clinic & Academy provides a high-quality, inclusive education grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis in a clinic-based setting. Its mission is to meet the needs of learners through a partnership with parents, teachers, and clinicians, focusing on helping families acquire the necessary tools to facilitate effective intervention.
Programs are curated for age groups so that every lesson offers the appropriate level of engagement for each child in small-group academic settings with no more than ten children. The academy uses several approaches and
techniques rooted in the science of behavior analysis, like Direct Instruction, Verbal Behavior, Naturalistic Teaching, and Investigative Learning. With weekly themes and activities, children have something new to participate in every week for short periods of time, either half or full day.
In focused treatment, specific targets might be behavior reduction, toilet training, or social skills training, while comprehensive programs provide plans for everything from language and communication to daily living and play skills to academics and behavior concerns. Social Skills Group Instruction is tailored to address topics like idioms, social nuances, appropriate social behaviors, and behavior management.
CHILDREN THAT CAN BENEFIT FROM ACCELERATED LEARNING ACADEMY:
• Struggle in larger groups
• May need additional practice with material and lessons
• May have Autism, ADHD, Developmental Disabilities, or struggle with mild behavioral issues
Signs of autism spectrum disorder include avoiding or not keeping eye contact, not responding to their name by nine months, nor showing facial expressions like happy, sad, or angry. They may not use hand gestures like bye-bye, have delayed language, movement skills, cognitive and learning skills, hyperactivity, and impulsive and inattentive behavior.
According to Autism Parenting Magazine, Nevada ranks 46th for raising a child with autism. Families struggle to find inclusive qualified resources with a small window of opportunity to maximize intervention benefits. The Accelerated Learning Clinic & Academy was born out of the need to provide education and assistance that supports children to reach their full potential using effective and evidence-based quality treatment and educational services.
Co-Founders Dr. Gwen Johnson and Jennifer Samuel unitedly say, “We created Accelerated Learning Academy out of a passion and commitment to providing rigorous, comprehensive education to all learners, where labels do not define a child. But instead, the core belief that all children can learn given supportive, well-trained staff delivering strong evidence-based curriculum is the norm.”
The academy’s objective is for each child to set a personal best and continue to make progress only against themselves, achieving measurable growth from where they start the academic year to where they end. By providing safe, accelerated, evidence-based education rooted in kindness and understanding, every child is capable of success.
Children with autism have different ways of learning, moving, and paying attention, that can make life challenging. There is no medical test to diagnose it. Instead, a pediatrician or clinician will observe a child’s behavior and developmental history. Screening questionnaires and checklists are based on research comparing a child to others the same age. Enrollment can begin at 16 months up to fifth grade, and tuition is based on grade level.

MOJAVE SPRINGS SCHOOL’S TEACHERS’ TIPS FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
ARTICLE BY PAIGE CANDEE | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MOJAVE SPRINGS SCHOOL
Las Vegas’ Mojave Springs School, a Waldorf-inspired AWSNA registered initiative, is dedicated to fostering creative and independent thinkers. This early childhood and elementary private school accomplishes this by providing knowledge, nourishing emotional intelligence, cultivating artistic expression, and inspiring students to act with the right intention in the world.
The school abides by the educational philosophy developed by Rudolf Steiner, which embraces the integral role of child development in education and values every child's capacity for willingness, feeling, and thinking.
You can sense these principals from the classrooms to the play area on its campus located at 6440 West Desert Inn Road. But most of all, you can experience it through the phenomenal teachers who support intellectual connection and the love of learning.
School Director Alexandra Cannady shares “The creator of the Waldorf education model, Rudolf Steiner, often discussed the concept that ‘children do not learn through instruction or admonition, but through imitation.’ It is for this reason parents and teachers are vital to our process as a young, developing school. Who do the children imitate? Short answer: their parents and teachers. So, our job as the educators in our students’ lives is to lay the foundation upon which children are propelled to become creative and independent thinkers who act with intention in an ever-changing world. To achieve this mission, our teachers must model an honest love of knowledge, genuine emotional intelligence, and a sincere desire for artistic expression.”
As you get your students ready to start the new school year, take a look at some of Mojave Springs School’s valued teachers' words of advice.
MARILYN ANTHONY
LEAD WILLOWS TEACHER (3S & 4S)
“Parents and teachers are a child’s first and most important advocates. My advice to both is to come together as a team to preserve the magic of childhood as long as possible by showing children where to look but not what to see. Collaboration between home and school is a must in raising a whole child. Parents and teachers both need to be involved and get to know each other. In working together, we can do so much.”
SPANISH TEACHER (ALL AGES)
“To me, Gandhi said it best: ‘Carefully watch your thoughts, for they become your words. Manage and watch your words, for they will become your actions. Consider and judge your actions, for they have become your habits. Acknowledge and watch your habits, for they shall become your values. Understand and embrace your values, for they become your destiny.’”
“Starting a new school year is a magical time! The key to starting the year right is establishing a good routine. I recommend preparing children for the start of their new journey by providing a consistent schedule around bedtime, meals, reading, and chores. This way, they will be ready to flow into their new daily school rhythm with their classmates!”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY VISIT AUSTIN AND PROVIDED
The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to get away!
It’s no secret that people are flocking to Austin. What’s not to love about the warm weather, vast culinary scene and the ability to recreationally paddle board through the city limits? Add to that the attractive walkability it offers, letting you fuel your explorative side amid the hustle and bustle of the downtown scene without ever needing a ride.
Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. Kayak, hike, bike and swim your way around the great Austin outdoors and enjoy one of the city’s most fantastic offerings that inspires people to get outside and play together.
When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate. This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public. Enjoy the architectural details, white-glove service, in-room Austin purveyor displays, and sophisticated, Southern-style meals.
Speaking of meals, Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. It all started with Franklin Barbecue, helmed by Aaron Franklin who was the first pitmaster to win a James Beard award for Best Chef, which was inducted into the
American Royal Hall of Fame and was credited for ushering in a new era of food into the city. Austin’s slow-cooked, fall-off-the-bone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss.
Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th floor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu.
Perhaps a hidden gem is Austin’s mark on the forefront of the booming food truck scene, a foundation for famed, award-winning chefs getting started before getting the funding to open their own brick and mortars. Whether you indulge in one in a gas station parking lot or parked next to a music venue, you’ll find them all over town, serving up a variety of dishes to be devoured.
But first you should start your day with a cup of joe from Jo’s Coffee. Known for its iconic “i love you so much” mural-clad exterior on South Congress Avenue, patrons come for the hot coffee, good food, cold beer and people-watching. The creative menu includes everything from its house blend to its Cowboy Cookie Cold Brew you can pair with a hash brown or local-favorite “migas” taco.
As for Austin’s retail and local maker scene, the possibilities are endless and elevated. 2ND Street District boasts a mix of boutiques and shops to get your fashion fix and new home decor. For the gentlemen, embrace the full district experience, shopping League of Rebels , a bespoke experience with tailor made lifestyle wear, or Bonobos , the pioneers of custom fit chinos. Then enjoy a fresh shave from Austin’s premier Finley’s Barber Shop
For the women, shop local and find the perfect gift for yourself or someone you love from Luxe Apothetique, then drape yourself in artisan jewelry from Eliza Page before falling for the modern designs from Blu Dot.
Follow some retail therapy, head over to Upstairs Circus , a unique concept where DIY meets the bar; pick your project, enjoy a libation, create a masterpiece and be merry.
Or shop The Domain district in North Austin, a newer shopping center offering upscale hotels and fantastic restaurants. Shop luxury brands such as Saint Laurent Paris and Gucci and reward yourself with sweet and savory bites from a multitude of eateries. Nearby is the home of the new Austin FC Major League Soccer team, so you can take in a professional soccer match as part of your metropolitan experience, cheering on the club team partially owned by Matthew McConaughy. Even if you’re not a soccer fan, the energy is incredible, and the stadium is a stunner.
Other Austin districts worth checking out include well-known South Congress Avenue . You can stroll boutiques and additional eateries and check out the uniquely converted bungalows that now offer day and nightlife entertainment destinations.
While East Austin is a larger neighborhood, the depth of culture here is noteworthy. Six Square is Austin’s premier Black Cultural District near the beautiful grounds of the Texas State Cemetery.
And, as one would expect, you’ll find a plethora of great restaurants such as local favorites la Barbecue and Bird Bird Biscuit that was just listed as one of Yelp’s Top 5 restaurants to eat at in America. Now let’s talk about live music. Whatever your scene is, you’ll find it here and, well, everywhere. From your airport arrival, to the open air around you, and then hopping from neighborhood to neighborhood, Austin is filled with live music. You’ll find musicians performing at world-famous festivals, intimate clubs, coffee houses, and even the corner taqueria. With hundreds of live music venues, you have plenty of options available to soak up the sounds.
ACL Live at The Moody Theater is home to the beloved Austin City Limits television show and hosts about 100 concerts year round. Tour the venue, select your show and find everything from country to rock, hip-hop, rap, jazz and blues.
With its true passion for its unparalleled live music scene, its championing of local creators and small business owners, and its celebration of its enriching arts and culture offerings, Austin avows a personality all its own and should be next on your playlist. We love it so much!
