Incredible Men

I cannot believe we are already in the middle of 2023! Time seems to be flying even faster lately.

I am super excited about this issue. In June, we have Father’s Day and our Men’s issue! So, we are celebrating the incredible men in our lives (such as my father and brothers pictured here) and in our community.

Speaking of incredible men, we bring you an exclusive interview with one of our most famous neighbors, Carlos Santana. He talks about his passion for his charity, the Milagro Foundation, his local philanthropic work, his residency, and much more. You will not want to miss this story!

We also have wonderful articles about a police officer turned home security expert (who else would you want helping you with your safety?!), an introduction to men’s therapy (rid of the stigma and get the help you need), business advice from local experts, and more.

This month we also have the second edition of “Jags & Jets: Come Experience the Lifestyle,” which will be held on June 8th at Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas to benefit local nonprofit Miracle Flights. Last year we had more than 250 people attend the event and raised over $13,000 to help sick children and veterans receive critical medical care all over the country. We hope that you can make it this year. Find the event’s advertisement in the magazine and scan the QR code to purchase your ticket and party with a purpose. Via Brasil will also sponsor the event’s food and drinks. You do not want to miss out!

We have been posting a lot of interesting content on social media, so be sure to follow us there to stay updated on what’s new.

I wish you love and abundance!

From my heart to yours,

June 2023

The Ability Center

CHANGING THE LIVES OF MANY, ONE SENSORY FITNESS JOURNEY AT A TIME

Everybody should have access to and the opportunity to exercise with the one body they are given, despite what obstacles might be standing in the way. Sometimes, resources aren’t as abundant for the needs of one community as much as others. Thanks to one individual, Southern Nevada has been gifted with The Ability Center, a non-profit organization that provides a safe space to empower, enhance, and increase the natural ability of those with physical, mental, and developmental disabilities. It is the only sensory fitness center of its kind in the valley and is changing the world for so many individuals who wouldn’t otherwise have a place to comfortably take care of their bodies and connect with others around physical health.

For the last two years in Nevada, Chris Salas, Founder and President of The Ability Center, has been advancing the physical health and well-being of individuals with special needs.

“It began with a mother who asked me to provide physical fitness training to her child,” recalls Salas. “Seeing the transformation in that child’s life changed my life forever. Where she struggled to function, she was now empowered to thrive. Families began to ask me for help with their children, and The Ability Center was launched.”

From ages ten and up, The Ability Center trains people with physical, mental, and

developmental disabilities and soon will be expanding its programs to even younger children, ages three to nine.

Everyone has unique needs and differences in life, with fitness being no exception. The Ability Center has created three different programs, each offering different activities and methods of instruction. There are the Adaptive Fitness Classes, the Small Group Circuit Training, the Group Themed Fitness Classes, and a Cheerleading program starting this summer. The Adaptive Fitness Classes offer personalized daily structured workouts with a member working one-on-one with a coach. This program allows the trainer extra time and availability to gauge their client’s exact needs. The Small Group Circuit Training provides workouts focused on weights and cardio, during which each member is paired one-on-one with a coach. The Group Themed Fitness Classes offer karate and hip-hop dance classes. Each one of these programs is carefully created to allow each individual to grow and maintain healthy physical, social, and developmental abilities.

Gauging each person’s needs for their health and development is at the core of providing the best training possible.

“Knowing that a member’s attitude or attention span might vary from class to class, the coaches of The Ability Center focus on

small, everyday successes, such as a member completing an exercise, enjoying a class, or having a positive social interaction,” Salas explained. “These small, everyday successes add up over time and lead to members gaining exercise independence, improved communication, and strengthened self-care habits and attention spans.”

Being the only fitness center of its kind locally, they had some speed bumps they had to overcome when first starting out. With a combination of small workspaces, limited volunteers to help train and run the center, and raising funds to secure a permanent location, The Ability Center has come to thrive in its new environment. With all its success, it can sometimes limit the center’s availability for training members. With a waiting list of new gym-goers, they extend their reach by providing on-site fitness classes to Opportunity Village, a life-changing company that devotes its time to changing the lives of people with disabilities. With community

partnerships, grant funding, an increase in membership, as well as a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congresswoman Susie Lee and a Certificate of Congressional Commendation from Senator Cortez Masto, The Ability Center has been able to expand its operations in 2023 and even collaborate with Special Olympics of Southern Nevada and CCSD.

Before 2022, there was no gym, or any fitness program of its kind like The Ability Center has successfully accomplished. Dedicating this center to serving people with physical, mental, and developmental disabilities is a passion for everyone coming together to operate and fulfill the needs of those often overlooked. The Ability Center of Southern Nevada aims to become an essential part of the Las Vegas community.

“The special needs community has taken an unprecedented hit in the area of physical well-being,” Salas said. “We are proud to be the only special needs gym in Nevada.”

Generational LEGACY

Father to son: passing on important life lessons

Ray & Justin DiNardi

When it comes to family legacies, it is often about looking to the past for life lessons and hoping for a better future for those who come after us.

For Ray DiNardi, General Manager of Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas, he said one of the most important lessons he wants to pass on to his children is to give back as much as possible.

"It's so important, both to the community and to your own wellbeing," said DiNardi. "When you give back, you really get back so much more."

DiNardi says that when it comes to his son, 37-year-old Justin DiNardi, he sees that life lesson he passed on play out daily. Justin is currently living and working in Arizona as the Director of Operations for the Coconino County School District. Outside of his full-time work, Justin is the Chairman of the Board for the Coconino County Search and Rescue (CCSSAR 501c3)

"Justin has been doing volunteer work in Search and Rescue for 12 years," said DiNardi. "It's really his passion, helping people and solving problems. He's always been good at that. I remember the first time I took him hiking in the Grand Canyon. He was probably around 11, and that's when he fell in love with the outdoors."

DiNardi said his son's passion for adventure started young, and as a father, he knew the importance of learning to be independent. So, when Justin turned 18, DiNardi gifted him with a tent, a sleeping bag, and a one-way ticket to Maine.

"Justin actually went out and bought an old motorcycle, almost as old as he was, and he spent the entire summer bringing it back home. He put 6,500 miles on it and came back the night before he was about to start his Senior year of high school. I think it is important for people to learn to be alone and to be comfortable with just you and you. He came back a different person."

Dwain & Caleb Frazier

For another prominent Las Vegas business owner, Dwain Frazier, who owns Frazier Allstate Insurance & Financial Services, he said he also knew early on the kind of person his son would turn out to be.

“I will never forget the day my son Caleb's high school counselor called me in and said, "Your son is so social. We love him, but he also drives us crazy because he just wants to talk to everybody!”

That magnetic personality and gift for gab first landed Caleb, who's now 39, a career in sales before moving on to the mortgage industry, where he also quickly excelled. But Dwain said his son also worked 10-12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week.

"That's when I told him if you are going to work this hard, you might as well work for yourself!"

And that's exactly what he did. Caleb opened his own Allstate office in Phoenix earlier this year.

"It was 2/1. February 1st. I am very proud of him," said Frazier. "I know he's good at his job, but he's doing what he knows. I have worked for Allstate all my life, so he has seen what a good company this is, and now with his own business, he can control his destiny."

Like DiNardi, Frazier also believes in passing on the legacy of helping others through your work. He also has this advice for any young men (or women) who are looking to find meaning in life and career:

"You have to have a passion for anything you do. For me, it's insurance. I have been doing it for nearly 40 years, and I don't think I will ever fully retire! Ha ha," said Frazier. "My hope is for Caleb to one day take over my office here in Las Vegas and pass that legacy on to his sons. When you do what you love and believe in your company, things will always work out."

A gentleman’s guide to finding health, wellness, and relaxation

SELF CARE | HEALTH + WELLNESS

THREE BUSINESSES FOR THE BODY

Taking care of one’s body from the inside out is becoming a widely known method of creating a life of health and wellness. Maintaining a balance between fitness, rest, and ensuring that our bodies are free of stress, pain, and toxicities is an ever-changing feat that everyone struggles with. Some men might think that wellness might not be something to prioritize, but everyone should feel empowered to care for themselves.

Three businesses, The NOW Massage, Smash Iron Fitness, and the Neuropathy and Pain Centers of Las Vegas are all owned by local hard-working men who strive to provide their guests with the power of taking control of their health through the mind and body.

The NOW Massage Boutique redefines spas by truly embodying a healing center for everyone to rejuvenate their bodies through massage therapy. Franchise Owners Jacob Lanning and Michael Schlazer have created a peaceful environment with a modern design while still incorporating natural materials. The NOW Massage offers three signature treatments, the

NOW, the HEALER, and the STRETCH, all focusing on different aspects of recovery, relaxation, and balance. With advanced training, their massage therapists exceed expectations and perform their skills finely tuned to specifically target stress relief and health improvement. With an emphasis on caring for the well-being of their community, they not only take pride in their spa services but also engage in charities to even further their care.

“We pride ourselves on giving back to our local community through charity donations, pop-up events, and supporting other like-minded businesses through partnerships and more,” said Michael Schlazer. “We feel so lucky to be able to do what we love while also supporting our community and building meaningful relationships.”

Taking care of one’s health–specifically physical fitness–can also be a great step towards wellness. The trainers at Smash Iron Fitness support anyone along this path in a custom way for each individual. Consistency is the key component to creating lasting results. Carlo Paredes, personal

trainer and owner of Smash Iron Fitness, said, “Along with hard work, the small everyday decisions outside of these gym doors matter. Not only do we focus on weights, but also the mind, nutritional guidance, and mindset.”

Whether the client is a bodybuilder, mother, office worker, or student who is just beginning their physical health journey, Paredes believes there is room for all. Even though it has the equipment to support elite athletes, Smash Iron Fitness makes an effort to discard all notions of intimidation, creating an open atmosphere for all levels of exercise. Smash Iron Fitness encourages the community to care for their own bodies. Exercising through resistance training, honing skills in jiu-jitsu, and learning what diet is best for each person’s lifestyle are all catalysts to feeling the most connected to oneself.

And for those with chronic pain, The Neuropathy and Pain Centers of Las Vegas create hope and relief. They allow comprehensive care in targeting the root cause of why someone is experiencing pain, oftentimes deterring the patient away from having to use harsher prescription medication drugs or sometimes even surgery. With their proven techniques, The Neuropathy and Pain Centers of Las Vegas give their patients the freedom to live their lives without hindering physical pain. The back, neck, feet, knee, and so many other areas that could be afflicted with pain, like migraines and headaches, are treatable with their proven techniques and technologies.

According to The Neuropathy and Pain Centers of Las Vegas: This is the only clinic in Las Vegas offering

epidural injections that have potent anti-inflammatory potential without the need for immune suppressant steroids. Dr. Odell is a pioneer in electric cell signaling treatment using the RST-Sanexas neoGEN® device.

Pain, relaxation, and fitness are all connected. Avoiding any one of these throughout life is almost impossible. Creating time and seeking the right help can lead to a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling life. These three businesses owned by gentlemen in our community are notably changing lives by empowering people to care for the bodies they have.

MEN IN THERAPY: AN INTRODUCTION

Although the pandemic emphasized the efficacy and significance of behavioral and mental health services for everyone, three years later, the stigma continues.

In the 21st century global economy, there is, unfortunately, still a stigma related to mental and behavioral health, in general, and specifically, the mental health and counseling of men. Due to gender role stereotyping, culture, socialization, politicization, and economic influences, among others, men have traditionally not participated in behavioral or mental health counseling and psychotherapeutic services.

According to John Elflein, Statista’s Research Expert on health care, from 2002 to 2021, in a study of approximately 70,000 men over the age of 18, men increasingly received mental health treatment or counseling services during this time frame, with minor decreases over the years. In 2002, 8.7 percent of U.S. men received some type of mental health treatment or counseling services; in 2021, 12.1 percent of U.S. men received treatment or counseling services. While the numbers are encouraging, they also illustrate that men are basically not participating in the therapeutic process (Elflein, Statista, January 16, 2023).

The positive movement of men seeking counseling and psychotherapy
BY DR. VICKI D. COLEMAN

patients are men. I am uncertain as to why this occurs; however, men seeking counseling and psychotherapy is a very positive movement toward change.

AN INTRODUCTION AND PROPOSAL

My theoretical framework and orientation suggest that self-concept and self-esteem are the fundamental tenets for knowing who we are and moving toward the goal of total health and wellness.

What I believe is most important for men is to know themselves with respect to values, core beliefs, world view, personality traits and characteristics, abilities, skills, and interests, to name a few. This means initially conducting an in-depth self-assessment and evaluation, focusing on self-concept and self-esteem. Self-concept is our perception of ourselves; self-esteem is how we “feel” about ourselves (Super, et al, 1964).

As self-concept and self-esteem are not single constructs, I subscribe to, and modified, the 6 Areas of Self-Concept developed by Fitts & Warren (1964, 1996), and illustrated in their classic, seminal global inventory, the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS).

I have modified the Self-Concept and SelfEsteem Model proposed by Fitts & Warren (TSCS, 1996) to include the following in an effort to facilitate the identification of who we are and issues, concerns, and challenges:

• Personal Self-Concept and Self-Esteem

• Physical Self-Concept and Self-Esteem

• Family Self-Concept and Self-Esteem

• Social/Community Self-Concept and Self-Esteem

• Academic/Work/Professional/ Financial Self-Concept and Self-Esteem

• Moral/Ethical/Spiritual Self-Concept and Self-Esteem

In each of the above, understanding self is the initial step in the self-exploration process. Men must identify the issues, concerns, and challenges related to each of the

6 Areas of Self-Concept, including “How can I better navigate the global village of the 21st century?” And ask yourself, “Who am I, and what are the implications and repercussions that I have encountered throughout my life? More importantly, what resources exist to help me understand and overcome said issues, concerns, and challenges?”

“I have suffered with acne for years now. I have gone to many dermatologists and spent so much money. I think, like many, I was worried more about my face then the money at the time. I just wanted to gain my confidence back. Justina helped me remove all my acne, I’m so very happy. I highly recommend this place.”

Ten-time Grammy Award winner, three-time Latin Grammy Award winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee with his namesake band, and Las Vegas resident; yes, you heard us, your neighbor is American guitarist Carlos Santana, the man who pioneered Afro-Latin-blues-rock fusion and has since spent more than four decades echoing one of the world’s best-known musical sounds.

While he has sold more than 100 million records and performed for more than 100 million fans across the globe, Carlos Santana’s impact doesn’t end there. His lifelong passion for humanitarian outreach and social activism illustrates his big heart and compassion as a world citizen.

In 1998, Carlos Santana and his family established The Milagro Foundation to help under-resourced children around the world. The Foundation’s name was inspired by the word ‘Milagro’ — which means miracle in Spanish — and by the image of a child being a divine miracle of light and hope. The organization has granted more than $8 million to non-profit organizations in the areas of arts, education, and health.

Read on to hear directly from your westside neighbor Carlos Santana as he shares his local insights, charitable endeavors, and multi-year residency at House of Blues at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Las Vegas.

WHEN DID YOU PLANT ROOTS IN LAS VEGAS?

We first planted the seeds to make Las Vegas our home in 2009, when we started our first residency here. We are now fully immersed in the Las Vegas community and love spending our time here.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT VEGAS?

For me, it’s the people. The local Vegas community is vibrant and thriving with arts and a growing culture. Also, living and playing in Las Vegas allows me to touch the four corners of the globe from my backyard. Even though we still tour, I get to meet people from all over the world who come to Las Vegas and come to our shows. It is an amazing destination.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE COMMUNITY HERE?

People here care about one another and try and make a difference to help those in need. People at Three Square Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Las Vegas Rescue Mission, and the countless educational programs that uplift the Las Vegas youth. It brings me great pride and joy to take part in all of these.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THE MILAGRO FOUNDATION?

Ever since the beginning, we have been supporters of life, people, and the planet. Back in the 60s, we used to do free shows for The Haight Street Clinic, Black Panthers, and so many others. The requests for us to play benefits and support people in need was something we took seriously and decided to really focus our energy where it matters most, the children. So, we focus on giving underserved children access to healthcare, educational services, and the arts.

WHAT ARE YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT YOU’VE MADE THROUGH THE MILAGRO FOUNDATION?

It is a blessing to be a blessing and have the means to really make a difference in someone’s life. What we do through the

Milagro Foundation makes everything else we do worthwhile. When my feet hit the ground each day, I know we are making a positive difference in someone else’s life. There have been times when a teenager or stranger on the street has come up to me and said, “Mr. Santana — thanks to you, I am the first person in my family to go to college.” There is no greater joy in life than knowing that we are part of shaping their lives for the better.

HOW HAVE YOU AND YOUR FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTED LOCALLY?

Yes, in addition to a few of our partners I mentioned earlier — Three Square Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and the Las Vegas Rescue Mission — we have supported Andre Agassi’s school, Spread the Word Nevada, Project 150, and many others.

DOES THE MILAGRO FOUNDATION HAVE ANY UPCOMING LOCAL FUNDRAISING EVENTS THAT THE COMMUNITY CAN SUPPORT?

Ticket sales at The House of Blues help support the Milagro Foundation as well as the House of Blues Foundation.

WHAT HAS YOUR HOUSE OF BLUES RESIDENCY EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE?

We love House of Blues. It allows us to connect with friends and fans from all over the world without having to leave my home. House of Blues has become our living room, where we can try new things and make the familiar seem new. We, of course, play all of your favorite songs, but being in the same place allows us freedom in the setlist to try different songs and textures and create the next masterpiece of joy.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU HOPE YOUR AUDIENCES WILL TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR SHOWS?

That you are significant, meaningful, and can make a difference in the world.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCE BEHIND YOUR MOST RECENT ALBUM, “BLESSINGS AND MIRACLES”?

Just be open and let the music and collaborations evolve naturally.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE US TO KNOW?

Once you perceive that you’re a beam of light that comes from God, you can live from love, not fear. All there is to life is love and fear. We have to live from love, not fear.

Secrets to Success

LAS VEGAS BUSINESS OWNERS SHARE WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE

For Michael Kling, these words have been the roadmap for his success. He launched Kling Law Offices in Las Vegas in 2001, and since then, he’s built a reputation as a go-to firm for individuals and families looking for personalized service in estate planning, wealth preservation, business, and tax law matters.

“I made a conscious decision not to become a ‘trust’ factory,” said Kling. “The growth of my business has been through word of mouth. My clients know we specialize, and they know that we treat people well.”

Kling said when he moved to Southern Nevada in the late 90s, Las Vegas was still in its infancy when it came to professional services. He said back then, there were still a lot of old-school Vegas attorneys who operated their business as a one-stop shop, offering all kinds of services ranging from car accidents to estate planning to divorce. But from the beginning, Kling said he wanted to run his firm differently.

“I think it’s a disservice if you provide clients with anything and everything. That is when your services are merely adequate,” said Kling. “At the same time, the client base in Las Vegas has also become more sophisticated, so they are looking for someone who is knowledgeable and an expert in their field, and not a jack of all trades.”

As for Kling’s advice for those looking to enter his profession, he said it’s all about building a strong foundation and listening to your clients.

“If you want to go into the estate planning area, you have to start with the fundamentals. I see so many young attorneys these days who just want to jump into the deep end without learning how to swim first. The biggest mistake that most estate attorneys make is not developing a system to allow clients to have a plan that continues to make sense for them.”

MICHAEL KLING

OWNER/ATTORNEY, KLING LAW OFFICES

Kling Law Offices was founded in 2001 with the goal of becoming Southern Nevada’s most trusted law firm providing legal services to individuals, families, and businesses in planning their futures. The Firm serves a wide range of disciplines, including estate planning, probate, asset protection, elder law, and corporate and tax law matters. As Kling says, “If you want to go into the estate planning area, you have to start with the fundamentals.”

RICH KRUITHOFF EUGENE WILLIAMS

PRESIDENT, PRO ADVISORS GROUP OWNER, EUGENE WILLIAMS INSURANCE AGENCY

As an insurance agency owner, Williams enjoys meeting new people and building one-on-one relationships. He has open and honest discussions to connect with his clients, explore options to protect their homes and personal property, and ultimately help them secure their financial security goals. Williams says, “You have to have the drive and passion, and you will stick with it. Just grind every day and keep that focus.”

Rich provides specialized training through Pro Advisors Group, an education and consulting nationally registered organization that touts being the most advanced and innovative tax consulting group in the country. They provide the most comprehensive and groundbreaking tax strategy training currently available. Kruithoff said, “One of the things you have to do is find a unique way to get clients in front of you.”

When it comes to putting clients first, Eugene Williams is also making that his business mantra in the world of insurance. Since opening his Allstate Agency in Las Vegas in July of last year, Williams said his focus has been on quality service.

"Some insurance agents just want to get clients in the door, sign them, and that's it. My office doesn't work like that," said Williams, who runs his business with his office manager Dominique Douglas. "We have an open-door policy, and we really take the time to take care of our customers. In fact, the other day, one client was saying how he's never heard anyone explain an insurance plan as well as Dominique — and I have to agree. She's doing great."

Like any other field, Williams said to succeed in the insurance business, you have to stay motivated and market your business the right way.

"You have to constantly go out there and network to generate your business," said Williams. "Wherever I am, I would hand out my business cards, and sometimes they call me, and sometimes I call them. That's how I get my business."

Aside from the daily grind, Williams said what keeps him going is knowing that he's helping people secure their future because you never know when something could go wrong.

"I have been on both sides of it. I have handed out death benefit checks and helped families move on after a tragedy. And I have

also seen the impact of what could happen when people aren't prepared to deal with the unexpected. At the end of the day, I just want to make sure people know how to protect themselves. That's why I am so passionate about what I do."

Another business owner who has a passion for helping people, especially when it comes to saving them money, is Rich Kruithoff, the President of Pro Advisors Group. His Las Vegas-based firm offers CPA professionals advanced and innovative charitable planning and continued education. The education is focused on strategies that Kruithoff said most CPAs don't even realize are available.

"These CPAs are so busy and don't have time to research these various strategies, which may be helpful to specific clients," said Kruithoff. "In turn, the CPAs will pass along these strategies to their clients, who can then benefit from the products we are selling. It could greatly help with taxes, and you know, when you are a business owner, that's the number one expense going against your bottom line."

Kruithoff says like any business, to succeed in his line of work, you have to believe in your product and find ways to be the solution to the problems your clients are trying to solve. "Too often, people are just trying to sell things, and you have to give them what they want first. Believe in the work that you are doing, and your passion will come through. People will pick up on it."

“I just want to make sure people know how to protect themselves. That's why I am so passionate about what I do."

CIVIL SERVANT TO SECURITY EXPERT

RETIRED POLICE OFFICER BUILDS SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS HELPING HOMEOWNERS WITH SECURITY SOLUTIONS

David Chaddock

After his parents divorced, David Chaddock didn’t have a stable home environment with his father, who moved him to a series of bad neighborhoods, often leaving him unattended. For several years he spiraled down, ditching school and failing every class until his mother took custody and got him back on track before entering high school. Even then, he bounced from the original Las Vegas High School to Sunrise Mountain, then Horizon, where tutoring helped him stabilize, and finally graduated from Cheyenne High.

Being raised by a single parent meant David learned to be resourceful. He taught himself to install his own car stereo and a few others for friends. That began a lifelong love of technology and a knack for electronics. At age 19, he was hired by ADT Security to install residential and business alarm systems, but after a few years, when he decided not to pursue a move up to management, he felt stuck doing installations.

He and a friend began considering careers in law enforcement for the benefits, security, growth opportunities, and more. They started testing and ultimately got hired by the North Las Vegas Police Department. David wore the badge for 11 years, became a SWAT officer, and during training sessions when he had to talk about his background, he found himself telling his peers about his love of technology. Word got out that he was the audio/visual guy, and

coworkers began asking him to install tech in their houses, such as security systems, video cameras, and home theaters.

That side hustle went on for quite a while until he was working seven days a week and feeling burned out. Law enforcement was a demanding job that he enjoyed, but his passion for his second job prompted him to resign from the police department and launch DMC Systems. It was a bold prospect, but he had a lot of support from his colleagues, and he didn’t ever want to regret not taking the leap and becoming a business owner.

David retained a business license and a contractor’s license and brought in his mother, always his biggest cheerleader, as the company’s bookkeeper. He did all the sales, service calls, and everything in between. As the business grew, he soon needed more help. When doing an installation for two detectives, their adult son expressed an interest in the work, and David made his first hire. Seven years later, that employee is still with him.

A few more employees have joined the DMC team since then, and the business has grown 50 percent in the last year alone and has had a very strong start to this year, in line to grow another 50 percent.

Serving the entire valley, David and his team can do large projects and different levels of service for

“When a client hires me as a former police officer who has investigated burglaries, they know I can give them the best advice about how to prevent an incident in their own home.”

both residential and commercial clients. DMC Systems specializes in smart home automation, including all appliance control, scheduled systems, pool lights and water features, home theaters, garage doors and locks, cameras and camcorders, and burglar and fire alarms with top-notch networking and security. Working with a central station to provide excellent 24/7 monitoring, a professional response is available for fires, break-ins, and other serious events, giving clients peace of mind.

Looking back, he has no regrets about giving up law enforcement to pursue a dream. David still loves technology and electronics, even installations, and is always improving his business management skills. And he’s a firm believer in trusting his gut about which direction to take the company.

He does miss the daily police department briefings, his colleagues, and joking around in the morning and after a shift, but not the politics within the department. After you learn the ropes and get more tenure, you either work on getting promoted or go on to something else. While on burglary detail, he began investigating robberies and eventually solved 18 crimes, made five arrests, and recovered nearly $15,000 in stolen property. While questioning criminals, he learned how they planned break-ins and

what they intended to steal. That information helped him customize the best theft prevention systems.

“When a client hires me as a former police officer who has investigated burglaries, they know I can give them the best advice about how to prevent an incident in their own home,” said David. “We provide state-of-the-art equipment, good quality installations, and good value for their money. That’s what helped the business grow.”

His passion for surround sound is in every home theater he creates. It became clear that he needed to expand his business into that arena after customers who purchased home security systems began asking for it.

When you love electronics as much as David does, you can’t help but talk about the newest innovations available for residential and commercial improvements. Clients responded by helping him grow the business throughout the home, including indoor and outdoor lighting and smart home automation.

Most of the business growth has been in audio/visual with surround sound systems running anywhere from $1,000 to $100,000. David counts many celebrities on the Strip as clients and a small commercial chain of strip mall casinos with more than 20 locations. And, of course, he still gets calls from his friends in the police department.

Memorable Ways to Celebrate The Father Figure in Your Life

PARTY PLANNING | LIFE + CULTURE 68

LEARN ABOUT HIS FAMILY TREE

Family heritage websites can offer insight into dad’s past and be an interesting way to study the history of your family. Present Dad with a report on his ancestors or dig in together!

PLAN A STAYCATION

You don’t need to go very far to have a great time with Dad! Explore a new neck of your own woods with a family staycation. You can go out on the town, stay at a fancy hotel and maybe even enjoy some room service!

GO BIRD WATCHING

Lay out a blanket in your backyard and grab your binoculars for a peaceful, naturefilled day. Make a list of how many different kinds of birds you see and guess if you can identify them.

GO BOWLING

Bowling is a timeless classic Dad is sure to enjoy. Bonus if the bowling alley has an arcade, chicken wings and Dad’s favorite beverage of choice.

PLAY FRISBEE GOLF AS A FAMILY

Find a local frisbee golf course and grab a slot for the family to play. This activity is fun for both young and old and helps you take advantage of being in the beautiful outdoors together.
