As temperatures continue to rise in our wonderful community, nature continues to gift us with more bloom, more green, and more life. Spring is officially here. This month’s theme is Explore, one of my favorite words. As a naturally curious person, I always want to see different things, visit different restaurants and coffee shops, try new flavors, experience new aromas and textures, visit new destinations, and meet new people. I want to explore life as much as I can. This month we bring you great articles that will give you ideas on how to explore new things in our own backyard. Exploring a

CENTURY-OLD CLASSIC Western Bar

If you haven’t discovered it yet, add it to your must-see list. A Nevada historical landmark, the Pioneer Saloon was established in 1913. The taste and feel of this piece of classic western history can be found in the town of Goodsprings, Nevada, a former mining town just south of Las Vegas. Featured in movies, music videos, television shows, and even video games, the saloon attracts locals, tourists, motorcyclists, and adventurers. And with food, drinks, live music, and more than a hundred years of stories and characters, this is the perfect place to explore. So, strap on your chaps and spurs and head to the Pioneer Saloon. Stephen “Old Man Liver” Staats Owner, Pioneer Saloon Stephen Staats is a musician and serial entrepreneur. He acquired the nickname “Old Man Liver” after several product releases under the same brand name that features his own likeness, including alcohol (Old Man Liver American Whiskey), hot sauce (Old Man Liver’s Yummy As F**k Sauce), a book (What My Dad Taught Me), and seasoning mix (Old Man Liver’s Red Menace).

this day. The business survived the prohibition, multiple recessions, two world wars, and two pandemics (Spanish Flu and Covid-19). The cherry wood bar inside the Saloon was built by Brunswick in Maine in the late 1800s. It was shipped around South America since there was no Panama Canal back then and eventually made its way to Goodsprings via San Francisco, California, and Rhyolite, Nevada.

DESCRIBE WHAT SOMEONE WILL EXPERIENCE WHEN THEY ARRIVE. After taking the Jean exit off the 15 freeway and driving the rural highway, one might feel like they were tricked into driving out to nothing in the middle of nowhere. But only five minutes in, after passing a hill into the small town of Goodsprings, population 200, the Pioneer Saloon appears out of nowhere, and one feels transformed back into the wild west days. The Saloon looks like it’s straight out of a western movie, and the surrounding lot is still dirt, seemingly untouched by urban landscaping and modern construction. One can park in the back unless you have a horse or motorcycle … in this case, you are entitled to park in the front “hogs & horses parking only” area. Once entering the property, you may notice an eclectic mix of people — bikers, families, businesspeople, artists, etc. Still, everyone is there for the purpose of enjoying each other’s company and the magic of the property. The smell of bacon and grilling permeates the air as one walks the outdoor seating area near the Saloon’s famous outdoor grilling deck. Once inside the Saloon itself, one can experience history as the original cash register still lines the wall along with several antiques from the era. In the dining room, you can read about the tragic accident that took the life of the famous actress Carole Lombard in 1942. She died in a plane crash at nearby Mt. Potosi. Her Husband, Clark Gable, had come to Goodsprings to await word of her fate. Because of the remoteness of the crash site, it took rescuers several days to reach the site and determine the fate of everyone on board. A piece of the plane is displayed on one of the walls in the dining room.

WHAT IS THIS WE HEAR ABOUT BULLET HOLES? Many people believe the three bullet holes near the western-facing door of the Saloon were from a poker game in 1915 where a patron was shot and killed. The patron was a belligerent, out-of-work minor named Paul Coski, and the person who caught him cheating and shot him was the dealer, Joe Armstrong. We have the newspaper headline and coroner’s report on display at the Saloon. It is the Saloon’s only confirmed murder on the premises and thus a topic of focus with paranormal investigations and paranormal-themed TV shows, like Ghost Adventures. CONTINUED >

So, gamers walk in, see our maintenance director, Gordi, and yell, “Easy Pete!” Even our dear friend who performs and books our bands at the Pioneer, Monica, is also the head of the Goodsprings’ County Advisory Council, the closest thing to a mayor in Goodsprings. Ironically, with life imitating art, the character, “Trudy the Bartender,” was based on her and was also the town mayor in the game.

WHAT FINAL THOUGHTS WOULD YOU LIKE OUR READERS TO KNOW? Outdoor seating is available for all ages and is dog friendly. However, inside the Saloon, it is 21 and over only. The Pioneer Saloon is open at 9:00 a.m., seven days a week. The restaurant is open until 8:00 p.m. on weekdays and 11:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with the Saloon staying open at least an hour later on most evenings.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ILLEGAL DUMPING A local company’s mission to battle waste crime

When it comes to illegal dumping, John LaBarge said he knows this problem all too well. "There are 70,000 tons of waste a year dumped just in the Apex area alone. So yeah, I would say it's a big issue here in this state." LaBarge is the owner of JP Junk Removal, a veteran and family-owned junk removal and hauling company that's been operating in Southern Nevada for the last six years. Before that, LaBarge ran the business in the Pacific Northwest, and he said illegal dumping was also an issue in Oregon, but not as much as what he's seen here in the Las Vegas Valley. "I do think the amount of open space we have here is a big part of the problem," said LaBarge. "Just go up to Apex any day of the week, and you will see all kinds of stuff dumped there in the desert." LaBarge showed us pictures of some of the things people dump illegally on public lands. They range from construction materials to bags of trash to used furniture and even a jet ski! He said this issue has especially gone up in the last

couple of years during the pandemic. "That's when people were stuck at home and decided to do a lot of work on their properties," said LaBarge. "And when it came time to get rid of things they don't need anymore, a lot of people ended up throwing them out in places they were not supposed to. Whether it's because they were too lazy or just didn't want to spend the money to dispose of stuff properly, it's just not right." LaBarge said illegal dumping not only hurts legitimate companies like his but also it has a huge impact on our environment. "We do have desert life here, and it's definitely affected," said LaBarge. "People think a lot of the waste will decompose, but that's not always the case. There are things people toss out that will just stay there and won't get picked up for a long time. And then, of course, there's the issue of toxic materials getting into our waterways via ditches and drains, especially after a monsoon, which can be really dangerous." LaBarge said that when it comes to the issue of illegal dumping, his company also deals with a lot of people doing it in CONTINUED >

vacant commercial and residential lots, especially ones where the owners are not physically here in the valley. "Every week, we do cleanup for clients. I have about 20 clients under contract right now where I swing by their lots at least once a week to look for illegal dumping," said LaBarge. "This is costing them a lot of money. It can literally cost property owners thousands of dollars a year to clean up. The largest lot I had to clean up cost that owner about $30,000!" LaBarge said his business prides itself as one that is licensed, bonded, and insured, along with being eco-friendly. This means his staff is trained to sort types of waste, so they are taken to the appropriate facilities to be either disposed of or recycled. LaBarge said with this commitment to quality service, his pricing does reflect that. And he said there are people who decide to dump illegally or use people who are not working with a license to save a bit of money but may end up paying a lot more down the road. "I have been in the business for about 15 years now, and we know how to handle all kinds of waste material. Not everyone knows how to do that or cares that they are doing it properly.” And there are consequences. He said fines for illegal dumping in Southern Nevada can range from $1,000 to $10,000. “You are hurting the companies you didn't hire. You are hurting the environment and costing people time and money." Public education is now part of LaBarge's work. He's getting the word out that if people witness illegal dumping, they should report it to local officials and authorities. He advises people to take pictures and get as much information about those breaking the law. "More people are reporting these incidents, and it's a good thing. decade, he had limited mobility and had to use a walker to get around. Spring Quiche

ingredients: • 1 pie dough • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cups mixed veggies, such as raw spinach leaves and cooked broccoli and asparagus • 7 large eggs, lightly beaten • 1 1/4 cups light cream • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs like parsley or thyme • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon fresh cracked pepper • 3/4 cup grated gruyere or white cheddar cheese • 1/4 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano

directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Transfer the dough to a 9-inch pie plate and press it into shape. Crimp the edges if desired 3. Place a sheet of parchment paper or foil into the pie shell and fill with pie weights, uncooked rice or dried beans. Bake until the edges are very lightly golden, about 25 minutes. Remove the pie crust but keep the oven on. If edges start getting too brown, cover with a pie cover or foil 4. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, cream, herbs, nutmeg, salt, and pepper in a large bowl and lightly whisk. 5. Sprinkle half of the gruyere or cheddar and Parmigiano-Reggiano on the crust, followed by the veggies and the remaining cheese. Pour the egg mixture over the top and bake until set, about 35 minutes. 1 pound strawberries, washed and sliced 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon olive oil Kosher salt 1 loaf Italian or French bread, cut into 12 slices 1 cup goat or mascarpone cheese, room temperature 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, basil, or mint leaves Good balsamic or balsamic glaze Salt and ground pepper to taste

directions: 1. Combine strawberries and sugar in a small bowl and set aside. 2. Brush bread with olive oil and a sprinkle of kosher salt. 3. Position oven rack a few inches below broil and preheat broiler. Align bread slices on a baking sheet. Broil first side until golden brown, about 1 minute, then flip bread slices to the opposite side and broil opposite sides until golden brown. 4. Spread cheese on toasted bread. Add a pinch of black pepper, salt, and the herbs to the strawberry mixture. Spoon the strawberry mixture over the cheese-topped bruschetta. Garnish with additional herbs. Drizzle lightly with balsamic vinegar. Substitute peaches for strawberries in the summer.

Accessible Trails Worth Exploring

THE PATH TO MEANINGFUL OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES FOR ALL

The fine gravel beneath Angel’s wheelchair tires makes crunching and crinkling sounds as she powers along the Historic Railroad Trail at Lake Mead National Recreation Area. She has now done the five-mile roll twice with the team of Las Vegas nonprofits DRIVEN NeuroRecovery Center and Trail Access Project. As we come to the end of the group adaptive hike, Angel asks me, “Where can we hike next?” When Southern Nevadans and tourists want to go for a hike on gorgeous trails outside of Las Vegas, where do we go? Our favorite choices are typically the Historic Railroad Trail near Boulder City, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and Mount Charleston in the Spring Mountains. If you, a family member, or a friend with a disability want to explore our local natural trails, where can you go? Could you answer Angel’s question about where she could hike next in her wheelchair? The National Park Service estimates that approximately onefifth of Americans have a physical disability that affects their enjoyment of our nation’s parks. Even beyond disability, we each have our own strengths, weaknesses, and hiking abilities. If you have paraplegia (can’t fully use your legs) or quadriplegia (can’t fully use your legs, arms, and hands), you most likely rely on a wheelchair and additional help to enable you to enjoy the outdoors. When people with disabilities visit a scenic area, they are likely accompanied by family, friends, family dogs, or service dogs. The disabilities often control the activities of the entire group.

Clark County Wetlands Park Wetlands Park has numerous paved and dirt trails circulating through trees and wetlands with an ultimate destination of a bridge over the Las Vegas Wash, a year-round river. The trails are flat except for a 4 percent climb immediately adjacent to the bridge. Across the bridge, a paved but hilly bike path continues for about six miles across the desert with views to the west of the entire Las Vegas Valley.

Desert Overlook Trail

Corn Creek is a spring-fed oasis in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, 17 miles northwest of the suburban sprawl of Las Vegas. Of the four hiking trails at Corn Creek, there are three interconnected loop trails (about 0.7 miles), which were built to be accessible to most adaptive hikers and were recently resurfaced with stabilized crushed natural stone for firm footing and to increase accessibility. Dogs are welcome.

The Historic Railroad Trail is a wide and leveled trail along an abandoned railroad bed with five short tunnels and great views of Lake Mead. The trail traverses and tunnels through volcanic rocks, the same as those underneath Hoover Dam. The firm surface of crushed granite provides stability for rolling wheelchairs, biking, and hiking for 2.4 miles each way. Dogs are permitted. There is no shade except in the tunnels, so this trail is not recommended during the hot summer.

The Desert Overlook Trail in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area is a wonderful escape from the summer heat in the valley. The mountain trail is located near the edge of the piñon pine and juniper forest at an elevation near 8,200 feet. It descends along a concrete path with a few switchbacks to an interpretive overlook toward the desert and mountains. While trekking the switchbacks, keep to the outside of the curves — the insides reach a 10 percent grade.

Historic Railroad Trail at Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Most hiking trails in the past have been designed for only the non-disabled. This may be because the natural terrain makes considering hikers with disabilities too large of a lift for trail builders, or it may be because trail users with disabilities were simply not considered at all. Regulations now require that new trails on federal lands be built with certain accessibility characteristics, such as moderate gradient on hills. People with disabilities and their families are now displaying their pent-up demand to enjoy being in nature and realize its healing effects. But, like Angel asked, where can we go? While there are numerous wonderfully paved paths in the Las Vegas Valley, finding “wheelchair-accessible trails” away from traffic and crowds in the surrounding scenic public lands is not easy. It’s also important to note that “paved” does not always mean that a trail

is wheelchair-friendly, and “wheelchair-friendly” or “accessible” does not always mean paved. Managers of federal lands sincerely want to create greater access, but their limited budgets and resources are usually prioritized elsewhere. While we continue to wait for trail access improvements, a few gems of “accessible” trails are worth experiencing now, whether you have a disability or not. For more details about these trails and their accessibility features, visit www.trailaccessproject.org. A local geologist and professor, Ed Price founded the Trail Access Project in 2015. The volunteer-run non-profit organization helps those with physical disabilities have safer, more meaningful outdoor experiences in public lands and parks, including facilitating the removal of barriers to recreational trail use.
