As we look back over the last few years, many of us have been spending more time at home due to circumstances beyond our control outside our walls. But inside, we were given time to reflect and maybe even transform the ways we create our personal space. So, since there is a shift in home design this coming year, we reached out to local home and style experts to weigh in on what trends are, and will be, big in 2023. “We are going to see more pops of color everywhere inside the home,” said Nenah Washington, the owner of Las Vegas-based NEET Design Group. “This especially after Pantone named ‘Viva Magenta’ as the 2023 color of the year.” Pantone, the Global Color Authority, revealed its color of choice back in December, and Washington said we will definitely be seeing more of this color, described as a “nuanced crimson tone” and a “vibrant relative” of the red family. But for this interior designer, who launched her business in Las Vegas during the pandemic, it doesn’t mean other color schemes are out. “In fact,” she said, “earth tones are definitely ‘in’ in 2023.” “You will also see more soft earth tones. Vanillas, browns, and nice deep rich earthy colors,” said Washington. “But I can also see people doing things like adding magenta-colored drinking glasses, pillows, and throws while mixing in the earth tones. You will see more of that when you go to stores like Target. Target and Home Goods are more centered on design, and their prices are very middle of the road. You can afford to go in there and get new decor items and redecorate your home without breaking the bank.”

Washington, who started her career in event planning and has a degree in fashion, went back to school for interior design at 50 years old. Now 56, she said she is more passionate than ever about working and designing in a place like Southern Nevada. “Vegas has been very good to me since I moved here from California,” said Washington. “This city has big homes. It’s not rare to see average people own 3000 to 4000-square-foot homes. And the bigger the homes, the bigger the kitchens and bathrooms — two spaces I especially love working on.” Washington said that right now, newly designed kitchens are using waterfall-edged countertops. These countertops offer a great contemporary feel. They create a 90-degree angle at the end of the countertop and use miter edges on both sides of the stone. But now, we will start seeing more curves incorporated into kitchens, according to Washington. “You will see more curves in the living room as well. We are seeing a softening of lines that are curved, even pillows that are curvy and ball-shaped in style.” When it comes to the ability to spot new design trends from around the world, David Daskal, the owner of ESG Gallery in Las Vegas, has a distinct advantage. “As an independent family-owned business, I do get the opportunity to travel the world where I can see and import the newest products faster than some of these chains and big box stores,” said Daskal. “Our flexibility gives us an advantage which I hope to maintain for a long time.” ESG Gallery specializes in importing and distributing boutique tiles, mosaics, natural stones, ledge stones, and slabs. Daskal works with a lot of interior designers in town whom he said are among the most creative in the country. He said they are always looking to do something a little different and more exciting than their last project. “These designers love to keep injecting what's new and fresh. For example, one of the latest technologies they are working on when it comes to porcelain

is 4D,” said Daskal. “If it were marble-looking porcelain five years ago, it would look like 3D digital printing. Experts say you should expect to see more bold and vibrant colors when it comes to design trends in 2023. Also, homeowners are leaning towards modernist curves and natural organic decor like Zen wood walls which are brought in to give an earthy feel to bathrooms and kitchens.

Daskal said in many of the homes he’s seeing now, they have trended out of the beiges and back to neutrals. Tuscany style is also not as popular as it used to be, and mid-century modern has an appeal among certain individuals. But for the most part, he sees a trend of larger pieces in many of the homes that are paired with cleaner lines. When it comes to window coverings, these items may seem more of a necessity than a design trend. But over the years, shutters and blinds have evolved; for one industry expert, he's seen one trend distinctly emerging.

"More and more, the trend is toward people buying quality over cheap because they want to do it once and do it right,” said John Barnes, Chief Marketing Officer for Sunburst Shutters Las Vegas. Barnes says that here in the valley, the extremely hot weather can lead to quicker deterioration of certain window treatments. “Blinds are not something that will last for life, especially as they get beaten up by the heat of summer,” said Barnes. “That’s why shutters have become even CONTINUED >

Practical tips to avoid costly repairs down the road

For most people, their greatest asset and investment in life is their home. Experts say one of the first things we can do to be proactive about home maintenance is to assess which items in the house need immediate attention. When it comes to appliances that can become costly if they are not taken care of regularly is a water heater.

“Every water heater needs to be flushed out at least once a year and a lot of people don't do it,” said Scott Root, owner of MC Plumbing, a full-service plumbing company serving residential and commercial customers throughout the valley. Root said flushing out the water heater regularly can increase its lifespan and increase efficiency. “Water heaters normally last about five years, but they will stay around much longer if you take care of them,” said Root. “We

charge about $125 to flush out your tank. Compared to about $1500 or more that you have to shell out if your 40-gallon water heater has to be completely replaced due to extreme corrosion.” To help encourage people to put their plumbing maintenance at the top of their list, Root is currently offering a $99 deal to flush out a water heater. “Just schedule it like you would your car,” said Root. “Most people get their oil change done on a regular basis, but they are not doing the same with things in their home, and their home is probably their biggest financial investment." According to Allstate Insurance Agency owner Dwain Frazier, consistency in home maintenance is also the secret to saving money long-term on your homeowners insurance. Frazier has been in the insurance business for nearly four decades, almost half that time in Southern Nevada. He said one of his best pieces of advice for homeowners is to maintain their homes and do necessary repairs so they don't run into costly expenses or claims. Being smart about how you use insurance is also another way Frazier describes as part of an overall plan to keep annual insurance costs under control. “We focus on educating our clients on the importance of having the proper coverage they need at a competitive price,” said Frazier. “Don’t be focused solely on price. You want to make sure you have the proper coverage before you have a claim.” When it comes to finding the right business to help protect your home and finances, the team at Bell Solar says it starts with choosing a reputable company. “You want to do your homework in any kind of construction being done on your house. Your home is your number one prized asset, so you want to make sure people who are doing the work on your property have a good track record,” said Jeff Iverson, Chief Strategy Officer at Bell Solar. Bell Solar is a Las Vegas-based electrical contractor focused on renewables. More than 90 percent of their business is dedicated almost entirely to installing and maintaining solar panels on rooftops. “We are living during a time where there’s a lot of unknowns,” said Iverson. “The price of gas and electricity is on top of people’s minds. Especially for electricity, I don’t foresee that going down anytime soon because of the demands.” Iverson said more people in the past 10 years have been looking to install solar panels. The estimated price tag for the solar panel system for a 2500-square-foot home is between $20,000 to $30,000, but Iverson said it all varies depending on energy consumption. Although he said in the long run, a homeowner can save about $50,000 over two decades. “It can be substantial and ties into the financial planning portion of a homeowner's future,” said Iverson.

We all age. Some age gracefully and peacefully, while others face difficult physical, mental, and/ or emotional issues making the aging process difficult. One thing is certain: at some point, we all need help. Help often comes from a family member, but this can become difficult as the family attempts to balance daily responsibilities with caring for their loved one. Options such as assisted living or skilled nursing facilities are available. However, a 2021 AARP survey, “Home and Community

Preferences,” found that 77 percent of adults over 50 wish to remain in their own homes for the long term*. How do we make this happen? Home care is a great option. Home care is a service that allows the elderly to maintain their independence while living in familiar surroundings. This service aids with activities of daily living (such as bathing, dressing, light housekeeping, cooking, etc.) and offers emotional support and companionship. It can be more cost-effective than other options and offers flexible scheduling that can be tailored to meet the needs of the individual. When is it time to explore home care services? You might need a little extra short-term help when your loved one: is recovering from a hospital stay or illness; if your loved one has been diagnosed with a chronic condition that affects their mobility or cognitive function, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s; when they require assistance with activities of daily living; or have difficulty completing household tasks such as cooking, cleaning, or laundry. Another instance is

when the family can no longer provide the care needed to adequately provide for their loved one. Many feel a strong commitment to care for their loved ones, but this is often a full-time job that creates difficulties for the caregiver as they struggle to balance work, family, and caregiving.

Cost and insurance coverage. Understand the cost of services and payment options. Medicare does not cover home care services; most services are private pay. However, some agencies accept long-term care insurance and VA benefits. 6. Referrals and reviews. Get referrals from friends and family and read online reviews of the company. 7. Schedule a meeting. Require an in-person visit with the agency representative and ask any questions you might have. A personalized care plan should be created to ensure that expectations are clear and that all your loved one’s needs are addressed. It is also a good idea to consult with a doctor, geriatric care manager, or social worker for guidance on the type of care that would be appropriate for your loved one’s unique situation. Keller Williams Realty awarded Traci Human with the “The Best Human We Know” award in 2021 for being such a kind and caring person. She was also selected as the company’s 2018 Cultural Ambassador for the Southwest Region because of her passion for giving back to the community. Ask anyone who knows Traci, and they will express what a kind human she truly is. She exudes happiness and has a sweet nature that shows her passion for life and people. For example, this past holiday season, when she devoted her fundraising efforts to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and continuously volunteers for causes that are close to her heart, like advocating for women to get a mammogram and raising funds and awareness for breast cancer. Human’s family left Florida to move to Las Vegas when she was seven years old. She quickly made the valley her home and never turned back. Since Traci comes from a long line of very successful realtors, she enrolled in real estate school and passed the Nevada Real Estate exam at the young age of 17 to follow in her father’s footsteps. A self-proclaimed “people person,” Traci enjoys serving others by guiding them through one of the most important decisions of their lives, whether a condominium or a mansion. Human currently resides in The Gardens and loves living in Summerlin. Previously, she and her husband raised their two sons in the McNeil neighborhood at Charleston Boulevard and Rancho Drive for more than 30 years. HERE ARE SOME OF TRACI’S TIPS TO WEATHER THE CURRENT REAL ESTATE MARKET: • If you’re a buyer, you have an opportunity to take a breath and really think about whether you’re choosing the right property since the market has slowed down a bit. • A professional home inspection is something you must do, whether buying an existing home or a new one. Be present and ask questions about the property. If you don’t approve the inspection report, do not buy the home. • Your mortgage pre-approval is subject to a final evaluation of your financial situation. Pay down your debt; the less you owe at the time of purchase, the better. • This market leaves much more room for negotiation; if you can offer a sizable down payment, you will have many more options.

• Don’t worry about current interest rates if you plan to stay in the house for a while. Lock in the best rate you can and consider refinancing down the road. • The best seller is a highly motivated one. Price your home right! Ever ything you need to know to create a breathtaking in-home bar

Having a home bar is cool. It is, however, not cool if the only thing you can offer guests is a couple of dusty bottles of liquor that have been there for years. What you have in your home bar can make or break your gathering, however informal it may be. A well-rounded bar should include at least one bottle of each of the six base liquors, which are the foundation for the majority of cocktails. Stocking a nice selection of these will ensure you can mix up almost any cocktail on a whim. If you feel like a whiskey cocktail tonight, you’ll be ready. When a guest asks for a brandy, gin, rum or tequila-based libation, you’ll be prepared to grab your shaker and mix up a drink.

VODK A Vodka has a clean, transparent flavor and is used for more cocktails than any other distilled spirit. Stock at least one “fifth” bottle of vodka, but opt for a handle (1.75 liters) if you like to entertain. • A good solid option like Titos is ideal for tall drinks like the screwdriver and bloody mary. • If you enjoy a vodka martini, spend a little extra for a top-shelf bottle as well. • Consider stocking a couple of flavored vodkas. WHISKEY

RUM

A well-stocked bar has at least two bottles of rum. • A light rum will be your workhorse for most cocktails, from the tropical daiquiri to the timeless mojito. • As a secondary rum, take your pick of aged, dark or spiced rum. suggested glassware:

GIN

Gin can be quite floral and botanical depending on the brand, since it is made from very botanicalforward juniper berries. • If you aren’t an aficionado, a good bottle of a London dry gin is recommended. This is the most versatile and can work in everything from a gin and tonic to a dry martini. • From there, you can get adventurous - every brand is different and a wide array of flavors is available. suggested glassware:

TEQUIL A Tequila’s quality can vary drastically, so make sure to test them out before purchasing. It’s the key to the ever-loved margarita, though there are other fascinating tequila cocktails to explore as well. Generally, you’ll want to stock at least one nice tequila. • The most versatile style is blanco (or silver) tequila, and it’s the best option for a one-tequila bar. • For a little upgrade, add a slightly aged reposado as well. suggested glassware:

This is where things get complicated. Each whiskey has its own style and characteristics. In general, two bottles are a good start - but you can always add more. • For the most versatility, stock a bourbon and Canadian whisky. The bourbon will give you that robust whiskey flavor and the Canadian blends tend to be very smooth. • Rye whiskey is a great choice for everyday mixed drinks. Though some drinkers find it too spicy, rye is excellent in almost any cocktail that calls for a generic whiskey. If you enjoy classic cocktails, give rye a try for an authentic taste. • A bottle of Irish whiskey and a decent blended scotch are good complements to any bar. While they make excellent cocktails, they’re not as common or as versatile as the other styles. suggested glassware:

Liqueurs are often used as flavoring agents that define a cocktail. On occasion, they are the only distilled spirits in a drink. Liqueurs come in every flavor you could want and a bottle can last quite a long time. Start with the basics and gradually add to your stock as you see fit. Amaretto: The almond-flavored liqueur is used in both fancy and casual cocktails. • Coffee Liqueur: White Russians and countless other cocktails rely on a bottle like Kahlúa. • Dry and Sweet Vermouth: Technically, these are fortified wines, but they’re essential for martinis. • Irish Cream Liqueur: Baileys is a popular brand, though there are others worth checking out. You can also stock another cream liqueur, such as RumChata instead. • Orange Liqueur: Used in countless cocktails, this one’s invaluable.
