The holidays are upon us, and this time of year often conjures images of twinkling Christmas lights, presents around the tree, and gatherings with family and friends. But in reality, for many in our elderly population, this time unfortunately doesn't bring joy or happiness, but quite the opposite. "The holiday season especially can be lonely for seniors as family memories surface," said Brenda Hill, Senior Living Consultant at Red Rock Pointe Retirement Community. "Extended family is busier than ever. Add to that: job restrictions, family obligations, and finances. All of which can keep families from traveling to see loved ones. Guilt also often plays a role in keeping family from reaching out, but it shouldn't."

Red Rock Pointe Retirement Community, located in the heart of Summerlin, offers an all-inclusive resort-style living to residents 55 and over. With amenities like meals, housekeeping, transportation, and a very robust activities calendar. At this facility, residents take part in things like daily fitness classes, live music educational seminars, bingo, and card games. "Communities like ours go a long way to helping seniors stay active and social, keeping loneliness and depression at bay," said Hill. "If you feel like your loved ones need professional help, don't hesitate to reach out for more support, as depression can lead to things like forgetting medications and a poor diet." Hill suggests that if families can't make it to visit grandma or grandpa for the holidays, make a conscious plan to visit them another time of year so they have something to look forward to. She also said that with many of her residents, she has seen how technology like Zoom and FaceTime is a wonderful way to stay in touch not just during the holidays but year-round.

"If all else fails, old-fashioned letters or cards with a note or a picture drawn by your little ones are precious keepsakes for your family and are a great way to send love and well wishes during the holiday season," said Hill. A recent report by the National Academy of Sciences shows that a quarter of adults 65 and over are considered socially isolated, and a "significant portion" of older adults in the U.S. report feeling lonely. According to Dr. Tiffany Smith, Founder of Aroma Functional Nutrition Psychiatric LLC, these feelings can be amplified during the holidays. "The holiday season, while generally a time of joy and togetherness, can pose unique challenges for the older population," said Dr. Smith. "One of the most concerning issues is social isolation. Many seniors may not have family nearby or have lost loved ones, making the holidays a poignant reminder of those absences. This isolation can exacerbate existing mental health conditions like depression and anxiety." CONTINUED >

Dr. Smith, whose Las Vegas-based practice specializes in integrative and functional psychiatry, offers a holistic approach to mental health care that's tailored to the unique needs of each individual, including seniors. She said her goal is to empower all her patients, including the elderly, to take control of their well-being. She treats the root cause of mental conditions, not just covering up the symptoms. Here are some of her tips for battling the holiday blues: 1. Stay Connected: Make an extra effort to include seniors in holiday activities or arrange visits, if possible. A simple phone call or video chat can also make a world of difference. 2. Maintain Routine: Try to help seniors stick to their regular schedule as much as possible, even during the holiday hustle and bustle. 3. Nutritional Care: If you're hosting a holiday meal, consider offering healthier options or a special dish accommodating dietary restrictions.

4. Physical Activity: Encourage light physical activities like a walk after dinner, which can aid digestion and improve mood. 5. Be Observant: Be vigilant for signs that may indicate a need for professional intervention. For example, symptoms of depression can include persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, or changes in appetite and sleep patterns. At the end of the day, Dr. Smith reminds us not to forget the importance of intergenerational connections and the power of community. "The holidays are when the community can really come together to support our seniors," said Dr. Smith. "And let's not forget the importance of intergenerational connections. Encourage young family members to spend time with their older relatives. It's a beautiful way for both generations to learn from each other and create lasting memories."

The Cure 4 The Kids Foundation shines as a source of hope, supporting families grappling with the unimaginable. This 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization provides care and comfort and engages in groundbreaking research and treatment for childhood cancer and other childhood diseases. At the helm of their digital presence is Mitch Koulouris, Director of Social Media and Digital Content Strategy, whose dedication to the Cure 4 The Kids Foundation helped him concoct a new holiday fundraiser – 'Christmas 4 The Kids.' "This special holiday project is a holiday music compilation and accompanying music video that

will benefit our organization," said Koulouris. "One hundred percent of the proceeds from streaming on music services such as Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Prime Unlimited will go directly to helping kids battling cancer and rare diseases right here in Southern Nevada." 'Christmas 4 The Kids' is a musical treasure trove featuring 22 tracks contributed by artists from around the world. Among the selection is a heartfelt rendition of John Lennon's classic, 'Happy Xmas.' "We made some small lyrical changes to the original, such as one in the chorus. This recording holds a special place in the hearts of many because it features the very children that Cure 4 The Kids Foundation supports daily. "The track was recorded in Las Vegas at Electric Shop Recording and features American Idol Casting Producer Kyle Khou and Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys, along with musicians from shows on the Las Vegas Strip as well as our young cancer patients," said Koulouris. "Christmas 4 The Kids is available on all digital music streaming services now." In addition to the heartwarming songs, the foundation also had the opportunity to create a music video to accompany their new version of 'Happy Xmas.' "The music video was filmed at Vū Studios in Las Vegas, a state-of-the-art virtual production studio, and features many of our childhood cancer patients, Cure 4 The Kids providers, Blue Man Group, Murray Sawchuck, and more," Koulouris shared. Before joining Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, Mitch Koulouris had a background in the music industry, which played a pivotal role in conceiving this philanthropic Christmas compilation. "Since my background is in the music industry and I'm familiar with distribution and monetization, I came up with the idea of a Christmas compilation album that would benefit the charity," explained Koulouris. "It's a very simple way to show

support for Nevada's only outpatient clinic for kids with cancer and rare diseases." The music video and the album project brought together more than 100 people, including volunteers, artists, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation kids, and more. This collaborative effort vividly conveys the message of hope and the belief that childhood cancer can be defeated with adequate funding. Having some of their kids participate in the recording process was a touching experience for the entire charity team. "One little girl who did a background vocal is a current cancer patient. She wasn't feeling well that day from chemotherapy, but you wouldn't know it by watching her in the studio," Koulouris shared. "It's hard not to get emotional when you see the look on her face of true joy and wonder. And the musicians on the record, all of whom donated their time, couldn't have been more eager to be involved in the project." But how exactly do these musical records translate into funding for Cure 4 The Kids? If you are a subscriber to Spotify, Apple Music, or any other music streaming service, you pay a monthly subscription fee. "A portion of that money is distributed to artists and songwriters when a track is played. This ends up being a fraction of a penny per play, but these add up," Koulouris explained. "To create interest and promote the project, we also created a GoFundMe campaign where people can go directly to GoFundMe and make a donation to the Cure 4 The Kids Foundation." CONTINUED >

We have high school athletes who come in before a big game, and we have people in their 70s who want to stay hydrated and feel better in the summer months. We also have a cute story about a husband and wife who come in together during their lunch break and get drips as a midday date.” As for people’s goals when they walk through the door, Lisa says it’s extremely varied. “We work with our patients in a very customized way, and if we don’t have a drip for what they need, we can make one.” The only caveat Lisa would like to mention is if someone is being treated for a serious illness such as cancer or if they are pregnant. In this case, Lisa and her team will need approval from the patient's doctor directly to begin services. Lisa emphasizes that she makes it easy for their doctors or care providers by sending them all the information and ingredients directly. And she’s available in case they have any questions before an approval or denial of treatment. She then keeps the doctor’s information on file for continual communication throughout any potential treatment. And if someone is considering coming in as a new patient or gifting to someone else, the process is smooth. Especially if they have questions or aren’t sure where to begin, Lisa says that her licensed staff are skilled in educating new and

existing patients and are always available for questions or concerns. The first step when someone walks through the door as a first-time patient is to meet virtually with the doctor on staff to make sure they can be cleared for any services. This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

Fig Jelly Honey Variety of Cheeses Salami or meat of choice Olives (provide a variety)

• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, berries, persimmon • Crackers

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.
