Kids and pets are bundles of love and light that can propel us into becoming better humans. They can be the reason we interrupt bad habits, get ourselves together, and get on a path to becoming healthy, productive, and happy. They can be our purpose in life. Having a creature to care for gives our lives a richer meaning and puts things in perspective. My cockapoo dog, Nelsinho (“little Nelson” in Portuguese), saved my life many times. I adopted him in March of 2007, brought him to the States in 2013, and he passed away in 2018. He is the reason I am such an advocate for animals. In his honor, I have decided to adopt senior pets, who are often overlooked and unwanted. All old pets want is a nice comfy place to sleep, food in their bellies, and love! This month’s issue is all about kids and pets! We have stories about tips for introducing a new baby or new pet to your existing pet; safety planning for your family including vehicles, mental health, home safety, and estate planning; a local school focusing on love, kindness, and imagination; and playing tourist with your family right in our area. For our “Kids and Pets” issue we wanted to highlight some of the safest vehicles on the road for our families and furry loved ones. Findlay Volvo Cars Las Vegas Director of Business Development Travis Pinney shared the company’s longstanding history of safety and some of its present-day luxuries. Why are Volvo’s considered some of the safest vehicles on the road? Everything Volvo has focused on since 1927 has been on safety. The Volvo logo — the “Iron Mark” — itself signifies strength and Volvo’s dedication to building extremely strong and safe vehicles. Volvo has also released all of its safety patents to the world, such as the Side Impact Protection Systems (1991), Side Curtain Airbags (1998), Whiplash Protection (1998), and Rollover Protection (2002), because they believe everyone should be safe no matter what vehicle you drive. Our single most important invention back in 1959 was the 3-point safety belt created by Nils Bohlin and Volvo Cars. It’s estimated that more than a million lives have been saved as a result of Volvo Cars waiving its patent rights so everybody could benefit. What are some key elements of a Volvo that a parent might be surprised to hear? When Volvo does crash testing, we don’t just use the average male-sized crash test dummy like many other brands do. We also use women and children-style dummies. This allows Volvo to test multiple scenarios, not just the bare minimum to pass the test. Volvo has also focused on child safety by developing the industry-first rearward-facing child seat back in 1972 and the child Booster Cushion (1978) and Integrated Booster Cushion (1990). It’s Volvo’s vision that no one should be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo car. Volvo even has safety systems and accessories available to keep fur babies safe. CONTINUED >

As we approach a new school year, our children are experiencing many emotions including the excitement of new adventures and new friends. There also may be emotions around school shootings, COVID, and our overall societal climate. While we are all shaken by these events, we must teach our children how to maneuver their emotions around their environment. With that in mind, I’d like to share a few tips to get your mind churning on how you can nurture your child’s mental health.

Tip#3 - Know signs/symptoms of mental health challenges

Some indications that your child may be struggling mentally may be:

Children learn more from what we do than what we say. What example are you setting for your children to learn to manage their emotions? How are you managing your mental health?

Tip #2 - Take inventory of YOUR life We all need safety, love and belonging, and purpose. If you lack in those areas, it limits your bandwidth to be there for your children. Ask yourself, do I feel safe? Are my basic needs met, or am I worried about paying the bills, keeping the roof over my head, etc. Next, do you have meaningful relationships and communities where you feel loved and supported? Last, what are your goals? What are you striving for in life? What are you destined to do with your life? Are you doing it?

As the old saying goes, tomorrow is promised to no one. While you never know what the next day will bring, it’s always important to plan for the future. This is especially true once you start a family. “The recent pandemic may have been part of the motivation, but I am seeing more and more people coming to me to get full written financial plans,” said Paul Kuhn, Financial Advisor with LPL Financial. Kuhn says that’s the new financial trend he’s been seeing in his industry. And it’s something he’s happy to see. “It’s not just about making as much money as possible, but I am helping people to really think about where their money is going to go,” said Kuhn. “‘Is it going to my kids’ college tuition? Is it going to my pets? What will happen when I die? How much will my children get?’ They plan for where they envision their money working for them from beyond the grave.” While “end of life” is something most people don’t want to think about, let alone talk about, when it comes to planning for the future for their loved ones, Kuhn said it’s an important conversation for every family. He said the first two things every parent should look into early are getting life insurance and saving for their children’s education. “One thing in investment is you can never guarantee anything,” said Kuhn. “From year to year, you do your best, but with a financial plan, we can say even if the market did this or that, over the long term, we are still addressing these goals way in the future.” But getting to the future also means protecting your loved ones today, including right in your own home. David Chaddock, owner of DMC Systems LLC, knows this all too well, having served as a police officer for over a decade. “I was with the North Las Vegas Police Department for 11 years and was on a burglary detail at one point. So, I’ve seen

That mission to protect his clients is now at the core of his Las Vegas-based business. That visual evidence will give officers a lot more to work with when it comes to tracking down the suspects,” said Chaddock. “And that comes from my own experience as a police officer. We can do our work a lot better when we can see everything from what the suspects looked like when they left the house, which direction they went, and what vehicle they got into. It won’t be like trying to find a needle in a haystack.” Chaddock said one of his most recent clients was actually a couple who are both also police officers. “They definitely take their home security seriously. The husband and wife work different shifts, and there are times of the day when they need to ensure their kids are safe, at home, and doing what they are supposed to do!” As parents, protecting your children and planning for their future are paramount.

When you walk through the gates into Mojave Springs School, a Waldorf-inspired Early Childhood and Elementary Private School in Las Vegas, you immediately feel a sense of peace and calm. Whether inside the classroom or out in the play area, it’s clear this space was intentionally designed to help students connect with nature. “We provide our students with nature-based materials in an effort to connect with their heads, hearts, and hands. We understand each child is a whole person and surrounding our students with nature honors that. This is the essence of Waldorf Education,” Alexandra Cannady, the new Administrative Director of Mojave Springs School. The campus, located at 6440 West Desert Inn Road in Las Vegas, is the only one in Southern Nevada actively pursuing Waldorf accreditation. It abides by the educational philosophy developed by Rudolf Steiner, which embraces the integral role of child development in education and values every child’s capacity for willingness, feeling, and thinking. As a private school, Mojave Springs provides an intimate, nature-immersed learning environment with low student-teacher ratios. The early education program spans preschool to kindergarten with nature-based class titles (Tansy, Willow, and Honeybee). The elementary classes have recently broadened to include 1st through 4th grade this coming fall. “We are growing with the community we serve. That’s always been the goal,” says Cannady. “My 2-year-old daughter will be joining the Tansy class this fall, and my 5-year-old son will continue into the Honeybees. What propels me toward our continual expansion is my 13-year-old son, who is moving into 8th grade, which we have yet to offer. One day, he told me he wished he could learn what the kids here at Mojave Springs do, and I knew I needed to help bring our vision to as many Las Vegas families and children as possible.” Cannady grew up in Las Vegas and is a product of the Clark County School District. She says Mojave Springs offers locals a chance to experience a different kind of education. “There’s no other school in town with such a collaborative, loving, and academically freeing perspective. I matriculated through a rigid system, and I deeply value that Mojave Springs breathes life into learning. For us, education is alive and should be given the tools it needs to grow; that is what our Waldorf inspiration really strives for.” CONTINUED >

Aside from the elementary expansion this fall, Mojave Springs anticipates other developments throughout the school. The current Spanish program will incorporate a deeper focus on bilingualism for students of all ages; the incoming 3rd and 4th graders will begin drama and violin classes; children of all ages will learn to help with the upcoming self-sustaining community garden on campus. “As a parent of a 2nd grader at the school, I love that this is a place where my son not only feels safe but also loved. He just really wants to be here,” says Molly Mecka, a Mojave Springs parent who is also serving as Vice President of the school’s Board of Directors. Mecka says her son has attended other schools but that the experience here has helped him thrive from the inside out. “With the Waldorf way, learning is not a chore for these kids; it’s a joyful engagement with the world

around them,” Mecka says. “When that happens, the children light up about what they learn and do. To see it happening to your own child is just remarkable.” Mojave Springs offers trial days throughout the school year to families who would like their children to sit in on classes with current students to see if this learning environment is right for them. Cannady says that Mojave Springs provides a unique model that is much needed for the educational landscape of Southern Nevada. “The purpose of Waldorf education is to meet individuals where they are,” Cannady says, “rather than where society thinks they need to be. We can educate children while honoring their humanity, and that is what we aim to do. We are patient and deliberate. Mojave Springs, in its essence, houses an appreciation for individuality. PLAYING TOURIST EXCITING EXCURSIONS TO ENJOY WITH THE KIDS BEFORE THE END OF SUMMER If there’s one thing many Southern Nevadans are guilty of, it’s not taking advantage of the fact that they live in one of the world’s premier vacation destinations. Locals often plan trips to visit places in other parts of the world, figuring they can see more conveniently located attractions like Hoover Dam whenever they want. With kids heading back to school, though, there’s no better time for families to make some last-minute memories together this summer than by playing tourist and booking an excursion to visit some nearby attractions.

1. Race Around Nellis Dunes Sure to be a hit with young thrill-seekers, SunBuggy Fun Rentals’ Las Vegas Family Fun Romp takes guests ages four and older out for a little off-roading adventure in the desert. Guests will get to “chase” their tour guide through the Nellis Dunes in a 1-, 2-, or 4-seat dune buggy for 60 minutes, with striking views of The Strip in the distance. 3. Soar Over the Grand Canyon Families can take to the skies with Maverick Helicopters’ 4-hour Grand Canyon Wind Dancer Tour. Passengers soar for more than 10 miles through one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World,” and they’ll land 3,500 feet below the rim of Hualapai Indian Territory to enjoy some beverages and snacks while overlooking the Colorado River. As guests travel to and from the geographical marvel, they’ll fly over several other points of interest as well, including Hoover Dam. That means kids will see two American treasures in one day!

Any major life change requires an adjustment period, and pets are no different. We had our first grandchild in December and prepared Giorgio, our Maltipoo, by letting him smell the baby’s blanket before introducing her, as the treatment staff at West Russell Animal Hospital recommended. You can also apply baby lotion to your hands to familiarize your pet with the scent. Playing YouTube videos of a baby crying helped accustom our dog to the noise, but nothing prepared him for the unbridled joy he displayed when they finally met.

We knew the first encounters would be very exciting for Giorgio, so we were advised to introduce him in a controlled environment, leashed and at a distance. His good behavior was rewarded, and we gave him extra love and attention whenever the baby went down for a nap or went home. But if there’s anyone in your family who doesn’t like the idea of animals and babies, keep the interactions to a time when they aren’t around to escalate the situation. Setting up the baby’s nursery early also allowed Giorgio to adjust to the change. Animals need consistency, and the slightest deviations can cause stress. When the room was ready, we used it as a play area before the baby came over so he would associate CONTINUED >

it with something positive. You could try wearing a baby carrier around the house to let your pet see that silhouette. Our dog isn’t quite two years old, so he gets excited very easily. When the baby spent a weekend with us, Giorgio was alert to her every sound. If she stirred during the night, he went to the foot of our bed, peered into her crib, made sure she was okay, and looked to us for reassurance. However, older dogs may be indifferent whenever the baby is near and will simply walk away when they hear its cries. A few years back, we had a Rat Terrier who needed a companion, so we went to a local shelter and adopted a sweet Miniature Pinscher. We kept the dogs leashed around each other for a few days, fed them in different parts of the house, and watched as they slowly gravitated towards one another. When we rescued an adult cat a few years later, she was the boss from the moment she came home, and the dogs always kept their distance. Cats need free reign so they can safely escape, if necessary, especially if another pet shows signs of aggression. Our dogs always responded to squeaky toys, and we could redirect their behavior by distracting them. Your pet will pick up on your behavior. Calm invitations to interact and rewards for behaving gently around a baby or a new pet will make the transition easier. Continue to provide them with mental and physical space to adjust, especially cats. Keep a gate in between baby and pets until you’re completely comfortable with their behavior. And no matter how gentle they are, always keep a watchful eye.
