LIFESTYLE LETTER
Summer is here!
July 2022 PUBLISHER
Camilla Dorand | camilla.dorand@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com
I absolutely love the month of July. It is the month when families and friends come together to celebrate our Independence. On the 4th of July, we can fully express our love for our country, and I LOVE America! July is the month for barbeques, beaches, and pool fun. It is also when many people take off to explore the country. This is the month we can enjoy visiting cooler-temperature states such as Montana, Colorado, Washington, Alaska, Illinois, and many others. If you’re more of a “heat and humidity” kind of person, you know this is your time to explore the beaches in Florida, Texas, and other southern states. My point is, there is something for everyone to explore during July. Our July issue brings you a great article about our very own getaway, Mount Charleston, which has beautiful hikes and welcomes us with cooler temperatures. You can also read stories about how to keep your home summer prepared with our MC Plumbing highlight, Sunburst Shutters exclusive energy-efficient Polywood® product, and backyard stargazing with the help of dark sky lighting from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. You can also keep your summer schedule happy with a visit to the newly renovated Spa Aquae. Remember to follow us on social media @redrockcitylifestyle and send us pictures of your own summer fun so we can share them with our wonderful community! From my heart to yours,

“It’s because of caring members of our community that we can achieve these results and raise resources for our kids!” More than 23,000 students drop out every school year in Nevada. Students who drop out are more likely to experience emotional trauma, homelessness, hunger, and poor health. Luckily, this summer, we can do our part to help the at-risk students in our community by getting involved with Communities In Schools (CIS) of Nevada. CIS is a trusted organization dedicated to increasing graduation rates and improving lives. Its mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Teachers and administrators can’t do it alone; it takes a community to help support students. CIS of Nevada brings together all sectors of the community, from businesses to other nonprofits to government agencies to faith-based organizations. Communities In Schools places full-time site coordinators within the school campuses of over 80 high-needs schools in Nevada. The organization’s site coordinators meet with over 75,000 students to ensure their academic success by working directly with each school’s administration to provide the resources to help students graduate on time and prepare for college, career, and life beyond academia. “Last academic year, we celebrated a 92 percent graduation rate for our students,” said Diane Presser, Marketing Manager of Communities In Schools of Nevada. “It's because of caring members of our community that we can achieve these results and raise resources for our kids!”
Also, volunteers are at the heart of Communities In Schools of Nevada and their community-focused approach to helping students.
Upcoming Communities in Schools events: July 21, 2022: Fill the Bus is an annual school supplies drive aiming to ease the financial burden on low-income students and their families. The donated items will supply CIS of Nevada resource rooms to ensure students at 69 high-needs schools in Clark County have school supplies for the 2022-2023 school year. Consider volunteering at this event with the whole family! Your kids will enjoy collecting school supplies at the event knowing they’re helping their fellow students. October 15, 2022: Every year, attendees enjoy an extraordinary experience while supporting children in need at the Today for Tomorrow benefit gala. Want to volunteer at this extravagant event? Consider joining the committee this summer to help organize the fall event. Interested in attending? Contact CIS about the gala to support kids staying in school and graduating. Volunteer opportunities are available for all levels of volunteers, from a few hours to long-term commitments. Visit cisnevada. org/volunteer to get started.

The Most Energy Efficient Window Treatments HOW SUNBURST’S POLYWOOD® SHUTTERS KEEP THE HEAT OUT
ARTICLE BY JOHN BARNES | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SUNBURST SHUTTERS
A leading culprit of temperature loss in your home is your windows and doors. They can account for hundreds of dollars in unnecessary energy costs throughout the year. However, it’s easy to reduce heat loss or heat gain by choosing Polywood Shutters to cover your windows and sliding glass doors. The Energy Troubles of Windows and Glass Doors One of the primary ways for windows to lose or gain heat is through their glass panes. The nature of glass allows heat to transfer through when there is a temperature difference between indoors and outdoors. The temperature loss or gain through your windows can be drastic on single-pane windows and makes your thermostat run extra hard to keep up. It can even be a problem on double-pane windows. Most window treatments don’t provide much energy savings because they don’t close tight at the edges, and air is able to escape through the sides of the window treatment. As your house ages and settles, you can feel the air escaping more and more.
Polywood® Shutters Are Designed for Optimal Energy Efficiency When looking for a window treatment to block temperature loss—especially in the extreme heat of Las Vegas summers—your best bet is with the top-quality Polywood Shutters from Sunburst Shutters & Window Fashions. Unlike other window treatments—like blinds or shades—shutters use a frame that encapsulates the window and prevents air from leaking out from the edges. Then the large louvers block a great deal of heat loss when closed shut. Of course, the true energy-efficient connoisseur knows you need quality, solid faux wood to get the most from your shutters. Polywood® shutters are constructed from a solid polymer material engineered to reduce heat flow by 46 percent and block as much as 30 degrees of temperature from coming through your windows. Polywood® shutters even come with patented, interlocking weatherstripping to seal any gapping between the panels. Whether it’s keeping your home warm in the winter or cool in the summer, Polywood® works better than any

other window treatment. In fact, independent tests show that Sunburst’s Polywood® shutters are up to 70 percent more energy-efficient than wood shutters and up to 1600 percent more energy-efficient than aluminum blinds. The Polywood material is also moisture-resistant, meaning that it won’t warp or crack, which solidifies its energy-efficient benefits long term. Polywood Shutters Make Specialty-Shaped Windows More Energy Efficient One of the biggest problems with specialty windows like arches, ovals, and circles is that they are hard to cover. Add in the need for energy efficiency, and your choices become even slimmer. Luckily, Polywood shutters can be custom-crafted to fit any shape of window. You get all the benefits of Polywood® for your specialty windows, including temperature loss prevention. Polywood® shutters also can block that breeze you might feel through a closed sliding glass door. Only Available Through Sunburst Shutters While there are many companies that sell faux or wood-alternative shutters, Polywood® is only available through Sunburst Shutters & Window Fashions. Beware of any company that calls their wood-alternative shutter “Polywood” because it will not have the same level of energy efficiency benefits. Sunburst Shutters Las Vegas’ team of professionals will walk you through all your options and help you find the right shutters to meet your energy efficiency and design needs.

For many homeowners, warmer weather signals the perfect time to take the art of entertaining into the great outdoors. Work-from-home drove an increase in residential outdoor renovations; many saw the time as an opportunity to build or reinvent thoughtful porch, patio, and exterior kitchen and living spaces. By taking advantage of proper lighting, they extended summer evening living into the night. Today’s outdoor spaces are viewed as extensions of our existing living spaces, and creating a lavish outdoor space relies upon lighting. There’s good news, as homeowners don’t have to be left in the dark to create a luxurious, stylish, and safe outdoor space that is also sustainable. According to The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), light pollution is reversible. The organization works to protect the night skies by educating people about the importance of understanding the need to reduce light pollution. The organization also certifies lighting through the Dark-Sky rating certification process. While light pollution is a growing problem that can have serious consequences for people, wildlife, and the environment, a few simple changes recommended by IDA can lead to beautiful and functional home lighting - indoors and out - that does not contribute to excessive light pollution.

WHAT IS LIGHT POLLUTION? According to IDA, light pollution includes: • Glare – excessive brightness, causing visual discomfort • Skyglow – brightening of the night sky over inhabited areas • Light trespass – light falling where it is not intended or needed • Clutter – bright, excessive light sources CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Light pollution can come from exterior and interior building lighting, advertising, commercial properties, offices, factories, streetlights, and sporting venues.
TIPS FOR REDUCING LIGHT POLLUTION You can make your home night-sky friendly with a few easy steps, according to IDA: • Use lighting only when and where needed — and that is no brighter than necessary. • User warmer lights and minimize blue light emissions; blue light brightens the night sky more than any other color of light. • Install motion-detector lights and timers so lights don’t stay on all night. • Shield outdoor fixtures so the light shines where it needs to: downward. In other words, choose dark sky lighting, which helps keep the sky dark while still providing illumination.
TRANSITIONING TOWARD ECO-FRIENDLY AND EXTRAVAGANT LIGHTING First, choose an energy-efficient light source. • Switching to solar lighting for illuminating walkways, stairs, and driveways is eco-friendly and reduces the home’s carbon footprint. Since solar lighting relies on the sun’s energy, it requires little additional maintenance are very cost-effective. For wired lighting, LED and low-voltage options rely on stepped-down power from your home. • Next, consider how much light you need. • Ensure you are not adding to light pollution in your area by use of inappropriate or excessive artificial light. It isn’t just about the inability to see stars when on the backyard patio on a summer evening. • Follow the five principles for responsible outdoor lighting and ask your designer about fixtures with the “Dark Sky” or “Good Neighbor” seal of approval.
FIVE PRINCIPLES FOR RESPONSIBLE OUTDOOR LIGHTING Developed jointly by the International Dark-Sky Association and Illuminating Engineering Society, these five simple principles show how you can protect nocturnal wildlife, be a good neighbor, and preserve the night sky.

1) Useful – all light should have a clear purpose. Before installing or replacing a light, determine if light is needed. Consider how the use of light will impact the area, including wildlife and the environment. Consider using reflective paints or self-luminous markers for signs, curbs, and steps to reduce the need for permanently installed outdoor lighting. 2) Targeted – light should be directed only to where needed. Use shielding and careful aiming to target the direction of the light beam so that it points downward and does not spill beyond where it is needed. 3) Low Light Levels – light should be no brighter than necessary. Use the lowest light level required. Be mindful of surface conditions as some surfaces may reflect more light into the night sky than intended. 4) Controlled – light should be used only when it is useful. Use controls such as timers or motion detectors to ensure that light is available when it is needed, dimmed when possible, and turned off when not needed. 5) Color – use warmer color lights where possible. Limit the amount of shorter wavelength (blue-violet) light to the least amount needed.
WHAT IS DARK SKY-RATED LIGHTING? When selecting outdoor light fixtures, look for those that mention the “Dark Sky” or “Good Neighbor” seal of approval. These fixtures are made to minimize the impact that artificial light may have on the environment and wildlife. IDA has a searchable Fixture Seal of Approval database. “Making the move to dark-sky rated outdoor light fixtures is easy and has substantial benefits,” said Denise Vaughn, head of ESG/ Sustainability for Ferguson. “It can mean the difference between being able to enjoy the stars at night and not being able to.” “Ferguson offers a variety of dark sky outdoor light fixtures as part of the company’s commitment to provide our customers environmentally-friendly solutions,” Vaughn said.

BENEFITS OF DARK SKY LIGHTING Minimizing the impacts of artificial light has other benefits besides helping us to see starry skies. According to IDA, research suggests that artificial light at night has negative effects on creatures, including amphibians, birds, mammals, insects, and even plants. For example, migratory birds wander off course and collide with illuminated buildings and towers. Adult female sea turtles have difficulty finding dark beaches for laying their eggs, while newborn sea turtles have trouble making their way to the ocean. Dark sky lighting also has health and safety benefits for people. Research suggests that artificial lights that emit blue lights may contribute to the causes of cancer, heart disease, obesity, and diabetes, according to ADA. In addition, artificial blue-white lights can increase glare and adversely affect vision, potentially creating road safety problems.
EXAMPLES OF DARK SKY FIXTURES Acceptable dark sky lighting fixtures point downward and shield the light source to minimize glare and light trespass as well as make it easier to see at night. Examples include: • Full cutoff fixtures with flat lenses • Fully shielded wall pack and wall-mount features • Full cutoff streetlights • Fully shielded barn lights, walkway bollards, and decorative fixtures • Shielded and properly aimed floodlights Director of Showroom Caroline Danielson said Ferguson makes dark sky-rated fixtures such as landscape lights and wall sconces available from trusted brands in a range of designs to compliment every home style. “We help homeowners with lighting that boosts curb appeal and provides energy-efficient safety lighting for walkways and porches while also reducing light pollution and helping to protect the night sky and wildlife,” Danielson said.

TIPS FOR HOT CLIMATES: • Look to Arizona as an example. “Arizona has long fought against “light pollution” - city glare that obscures the night sky. The Dark Skies Movement is headquartered in Tucson, and Flagstaff, Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek, Camp Verde, and the Kaibab Paiute Indian Reservation are all officially designated dark sky regions.” (VisitArizona.com, Outdoor Adventures: Arizona’s Starry Nights.”) • Consider buying an outdoor ceiling fan without a light and pair it with recessed, ceiling Dark Sky-rated light rated light. This setup can keep homeowners cool and further deterring insects from gathering.

plumbing Las Vegas business offers service with integrity
“When I first got to Las Vegas, I had $120 in my pocket. I had no idea where I would be the next day, let alone one day, owning my own business.” But a lot has changed since Scott Root moved to Southern Nevada from his home state of Michigan nearly 20 years ago. He now owns and operates MC Plumbing, a full-service plumbing company for residential and commercial customers throughout the valley. He is doing all this while raising three daughters. But one thing has stayed the same since he came to call Nevada home: the love for his craft. “I have been a plumber since right out of high school,” said Root. “I knew I wasn’t going to go to college. I was ready to work, and then right after graduation, my friend’s dad, who was a plumber, asked me if I wanted to work for him, and I immediately said ‘yes.’ And that’s how it started.” CONTINUED >

“It’s great to see how things have changed. These gadgets weren’t around when I started in the field. The old kind, you just muscle it up and put it in the garage. It’s a lot different now.”
After Root moved to Las Vegas, he said he had been working for other plumbing businesses for a while before he bought MC Plumbing in September of 2011. Like other fields, his company has had to weather the storm over the years, including the recent pandemic. But Root said what keeps his customers coming back is the honesty and integrity he brings to the job every day. “I always say I have the Midwest work ethic that you don’t often find on the west coast,” said Root. “I get up at 4:00 or 4:30 in the morning, go to the gym for a couple of hours and then I get right to work. We are open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. We spend so little on advertising because people just trust us, and they give us referrals.” Word of mouth has been the best calling card for MC Plumbing which, according to Root, has seen more business recently as people are staying home more and noticing when work needs to be done around the house, including plumbing. And now, with summer here, he and his crews are ready for more calls to start coming in. “It’s that change in temperatures,” said Root. “It could be in the 90s one day and 60s the next day with high winds here in Las Vegas,” said Root. “That’s when the ground starts to shift, and people don’t realize it can break water mains and make it move. That can cause underground slab leaks, and it’s a big thing for us.” Root said a lot of people don’t realize there’s a problem until it’s too late, and they started seeing those high-water bills. “I would see people panicking and calling us and saying I don’t know what to do,” said Root. “My best
advice is to be proactive and try to prevent your pipes from breaking in the first place. And we are always available to come in for a free assessment. And we are honest with people if there’s work that can be done cheaper with a landscaper, for example, we tell them. Not all work has to be done by us.” Root said the biggest change he’s seen over the years in the plumbing industry is how technology has transformed things such as water heaters. Research shows a traditional tank heater makes up close to 20 percent of your total energy use, but a quality tankless water heater is an estimated 34 percent more efficient than the old tank style. “I am in the office now most of the time, so my staff knows a lot more about this new technology than I do. But it’s great to see how things have changed. These gadgets weren’t around when I started in the field. The old kind, you just muscle it up and put it in the garage. It’s a lot different now.” What Root knows won’t be changing anytime soon is his passion for the business and his love for working here in Southern Nevada. He said MC Plumbing is here to stay, and he has this advice for other business owners who, like him, may have landed in this role unexpectedly. “I wasn’t a businessperson at all. I was just a plumber, but I had this big personality, so I thought I would be a foreman or a boss or something like that,” said Root. “But when you own your own business, it is harder than I thought it would be, definitely more stressful. So, it’s really important to take care of yourself. Take those days off. Give yourself a vacation. And come back with that passion to serve.”

The Spring Mountains National Recreation Area and the town of Mount Charleston offer locals fun opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas year-round. During the summer months, the mission for locals is to escape the heat to get to cooler temperatures, and enjoy the outdoors.
campgrounds and picnic sites Start your Mount Charleston adventure at one of 13 campgrounds and picnic sites. Picnic sites are the central points of biking, camping, hiking, and stunning views. There are many options for picnic and camping locations throughout the Spring Mountains. Visitors may need to pay an additional fee to access many campgrounds. And some picnic sites have cash-only at the entrance, while others may be reserved in advance. Visit Recreation.gov to find and reserve a location. The Deer Creek Picnic Area is a popular choice found approximately halfway down the Deer Creek Highway. Deer Creek is home to one of the areas with no entrance fee and is occupied on a first-come, first-serve basis. This picnic site is close to popular trails, including Bristlecone Loop Trail, Calico Tanks Trail, Kraft Mountain Loop, and Tin Can Alley.
Fletcher View Campgrounds is a forested desert oasis with nearby hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. Beware: Fletcher View is located along the Kyle Canyon wash, so reservations are unavailable during the monsoon season from mid-July through mid-September.
“The Spring Mountains are recognized as “sky islands” because the high elevation of its peaks creates an oasis of cool weather away from the desert heat. Mount Charleston is the coolest hot spot to escape the summer heat, and it's a short drive outside Las Vegas. Campgrounds, trails, and scenic views are the go-to destinations to cool off this July in Southern Nevada.” CONTINUED >

hiking and biking trails Mount Charleston is famous for its trails, making it a popular destination for hikers. The Spring Mountains are home to more than 60 miles of trails, many of which rise between 6,000 and 11,916 feet in elevation. Mount Charleston has hiking trails for every skill level. You’ll find that Acastus Trail is a popular wheelchair-accessible trail leading hikers to the highest peak in Spring Mountain, the 11,916ft Charleston Peak. Trail Canyon is one of the more challenging trails and is not stroller or wheelchair-friendly, making it a popular choice for experienced mountain bikers. Mountain bike through Trail Canyon to experience aspen forests, ponderosa pine, and curl-leaf mountain mahogany.
take a scenic drive Spring Mountains National Recreation Area is home to beautiful landscapes, making it not just a scenic drive but a great location for pictures. In under three hours, visitors can travel from Las Vegas and back and still take in the scenic views and stop for fun photo-ops. After all, not everyone has the time or energy to hike, bike, or set up a picnic.
safety tips before planning your visit Always check the weather before you visit Mount Charleston. Make sure to pack the necessary equipment and wear proper clothing. And even though you can count on Mount Charleston to be cooler than Las Vegas, you still need to stay hydrated. Have fun, be safe, and remember to “take only pictures, leave only footprints.”

showers, Spa Aquae re-imagined its couples’ spaces by adding four couples’ treatment rooms and expanding its lushly landscaped outdoor Hydra Lounge. Aside from the co-ed steam room, sauna, whirlpool, and six-chamber hydrotherapy circuit pool that have long been guest favorites, visitors will find a spacious new seating area with plenty of lounge chairs and tables to enjoy. Spa-goers can even scan a QR code to have artisanal bites and cold press juices delivered to them poolside, so they don’t have to leave the soothing oasis for something to eat or drink. Spa Aquae recently welcomed its first luxury barbershop experience, too: Gentlemen’s Tonic. The first Gentlemen’s Tonic barbershop in the United States, the famed London establishment offers everything from men’s cuts to wet shaves. It’s the perfect place for guys to get ready for date night while ladies are enjoying some primping themselves at the nearby salon. Several new spa and salon services are available for guests to book as well, including a meditative pedicure experience that

will whisk guests away into a state of bliss as their feet get ready for sandal season. The spa’s new HydraFacial treatment is another must-have summer service that uses a special machine to not only exfoliate skin and suction debris from one’s pores but also quench skin with intense moisturizers, antioxidants, and peptides to create a gratifying glow. Best described as an aqua microdermabrasion, the fabulous facial is customizable based on one’s skin concerns and available as a 25-, 50- or 80-minute service. Although the HydraFacial machine can be a bit abrasive for first-time guests, the esthetician will work with each person’s comfort level to make sure they’re not in any discomfort during the thorough treatment. Las Vegas locals receive 30-percent-off select services Monday through Thursday and 20-percent-off select services Friday through Sunday. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the facilities if you plan to use them before or after your appointment, as it’s easy to take the idea of a spa day quite literally at Spa Aquae!
