The Men in Our Lives

June 2022 PUBLISHER

Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com

Like most little girls, my father was my first love. I remember one day back in the early 80s – I was 7 or 8 years old - when I was watching the original Superman movie with Christopher Reeves, and my mom asked me a totally random question, “Who is better looking? Superman or your dad?” I remember feeling very offended by that question because, of course, it was Superman, but how could I betray my hero, my first love, and let her know the truth? So, I said, “Dad, of course.” Most everyone has had a special man in their life at one point or another, so this month we celebrate men! This June issue is filled with great stories about business owners, new companies, classic vehicles, charities, and new valley bike trails. It will be our second year featuring a James Bond-inspired “(Not) Shaken, Not Stirred” article, highlighting successful businessmen and their recipes for success. I am also very excited to invite you to our upcoming fundraiser, “Jags & Jets – experience the lifestyle.” This event will benefit Miracle Flights, a nonprofit organization that provides free flights to those in need of life-changing medical care not found in the local community. The event will take place on June 9, 2022, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas, 6425 Ray Worn Way, Las Vegas. We will have live music, food, drinks, vintage Jaguars, and more! Be sure to check out our invitation in this magazine to grab your tickets. See you there! Follow us on social media @redrockcitylifestyle for more event information and news around town. SAFE HIKING AND BIKING TRAILS POPPING UP ACROSS THE VALLEY HENDERSON’S HARRY REID UPRR TRAIL COMPLETED AND RED ROCK LEGACY TRAIL IN DEVELOPMENT ARTICLE BY DOUG PUPPEL

People like them because they’re quiet, but new Southern Nevada hiking and biking trails are making some noise. The Harry Reid UPRR Trail just completed in Henderson and the Red Rock Legacy Trail in development in the west valley provide the kind of infrastructure that bicycle advocates say is much needed in Southern Nevada. “Many cyclists — including my wife — don’t feel comfortable riding alongside the roadway,” said Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones, an avid bicyclist whose district includes the Red Rock trail route. “Once we make it a thing people feel safe doing, they are more likely to get out there.” According to the Federal Highway Administration, the lead agency on the project, construction is likely to begin next year on the $100 million, 20-mile paved trail through the federally protected Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. From one trailhead on far West Charleston Boulevard, the trail will go into the canyon, continue past the entrance to the scenic loop, and end near Blue Diamond Road and Durango Drive in the southwest valley. The first phase of the project will include a parking area near West Tech High School, a pedestrian bridge across a nearby wash, and building five miles of trail to near the Red Rock visitors center. Construction of the southern end of the trail would follow, with additional phases eventually connecting the sections. Jones said the county also is taking the needs of bicyclists more into account for projects in town. “We’ve changed the way we build bicycle lanes. In the past, they’ve been the narrow lanes at the side of the road, but the trend is toward protected or buffered lanes, so cyclists aren’t constantly being buzzed by the cars,” Jones said.

Courtesy of the City of Henderson

“From a west valley perspective, people will have the ability to go from Red Rock to our parks and bike paths in a connected way that hasn’t been there before,” said Jones, who added that “the cities of Henderson and Las Vegas saw the vision” and pioneered bicycle-friendly options. In Henderson, this spring marked completion of an $18 million project to build the final five miles of the 11-mile Harry Reid UPRR Trail. The trail goes east-west the length of the city and lets bicyclists travel from Boulder City to west of Green Valley without encountering motorized vehicles. “Henderson residents place a high value on parks, trails, and open space,” said Mayor Debra March. “The completion of the UPRR trail will provide a wonderful escape.” Running along Union Pacific Railroad rights of way, the Reid trail creates a spine for Henderson’s 220-mile municipal trail system that links neighborhoods with shopping, workplaces, and public amenities like the city’s new event venue, The Dollar Loan Center. “One of the benefits of this particular trail is it connects to so many areas within the city — schools, businesses, parks,” said Shari Ferguson, the city’s director of parks and recreation. “And with the exception of Gibson Road, the new section provides either bridges or tunnels to get people across existing streets.” “With an average of more than five pedestrians or bicyclists killed each month in 2021 on Clark County streets, there is an urgency to roadway safety,” said Tony Capsouto, vice president of the Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition. “Henderson has shown what’s possible with all of the trails that the city provides to the community,” Capsouto said. “There’s no safer way for a bicyclist or pedestrian to travel.” Making use of a trail also provides health benefits beyond diminishing the likelihood of being hit by a car.

“Walking for exercise can increase cardiovascular fitness and muscle tone,” said Dr. Karin Esposito, senior executive dean for academic and student affairs at Roseman University College of Medicine, which is in development in Summerlin. Esposito, who can often be found hiking at Red Rock Canyon or Mount Charleston, said she hopes convenient trails and “the glorious weather here” will get more people moving, noting that the Southern Nevada Health District warns that one in four area adults gets little or no exercise. “Walking, particularly, is an easy way for people of different fitness levels to exercise together, without a lot of expense — just a good pair of shoes,” she said.

Turning Loss into Love ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE MEAD

Local family joins forces with nonprofit to help people navigate grief journeys

EXP E RT H E LP | L IFE + CULTURE

Kelly Boyers

“We have made a conscious effort to choose joy over despair.” For Shyla Magee, that joy is evident when she talks about her children: 5-year-old Bryce, 2-year-old Sadie Mae, 4-month-old Rhee, and Colt, her son who passed away in 2019 when he was just 17 months old. “Our family will always feel the weight of our loss,” said Magee. “It will never go away. It is easier to choose hopelessness, but I encourage other families who have experienced loss to make every effort to see the good in their circumstances and to continue to live the best life they can in honor of their loved ones.” Magee, a Las Vegas-based realtor, and her husband RJ, who is the Vice President of Operations at Sierra LLC Air Conditioning & Heating, said what has helped her family cope with the grief and loss is by giving back to a nonprofit that stepped up to help them during their most difficult days. “Adam’s Place was there for us after we lost Colt,” said Magee. “They provided us with resources, articles, and contacts to help us work through, not only our grief, but also our other son’s grief as well. Our son Bryce was just 3 when his little brother passed away.” Adam’s Place is a 501(c)3 nonprofit launched in 2009 by Kelly Boyers after she lost her teenage son in a car accident. Since then, the organization has provided peer support and emotional/social learning tools to more than 2000 kids, teens, and families. The organization’s signature program is “Camp Cope,” which consists of virtual and in-person

sessions where kids, broken up into different age groups, work with trained facilitators to navigate their grief journeys. “Through Camp Cope, Bryce was able to meet other children who have also experienced loss,” said Magee. “We noticed that he spoke more about his little brother after he went through the sessions, which gave us some peace in the midst of the storm.” “We couldn’t do what we do without the support of the community,” said Kelly Boyers. “And the Magee’s are definitely a big part of that.” Boyers shared that since the Magees came to Adam’s Place, the family had supported her nonprofit in a variety of ways. Shyla and RJ have volunteered their time at many of Adam’s Place’s community events including their annual fundraiser Build Strong Hearts 5K. The Magee family has also contributed financially to Adam’s Place over the years. “The financial support from local businesses is crucial for us to keep offering our programs and services at NO cost to our families. With them going through the most challenging times, we want to take that worry off their shoulders. And for us to do that, we need help from businesses as well as local governments.” That help has also come from people like Las Vegas City Council Member Brian Knudsen who has supported funding to help expand the In-School Camp Cope program. This is the extension to the original Camp Cope to help kids in Clark County School District deal with losses that extend to things like deportations and incarcerations.

“I encourage other families who have experienced loss to make every effort to see the good in their circumstances and to continue to live the best life they can in honor of their loved ones.”

“Our goal is to help as many children in our community as we can,” said Boyers. “And the partnerships with local educators and schools are crucial.” Adam’s Place was recently named “Outstanding Community Organization” of the year by the Nevada School Counselor Association. The nonprofit is recognized for providing superior partnership and support to school counselors in their community, especially through the pandemic.

32

EXP E RT H E LP | L IFE + CULTURE

For Magee, she said she’s happy to see this nonprofit grow and help more people in Southern Nevada. This as her own family is also growing in love and strength. “Since Colt’s loss, our family has expanded by adding two beautiful children to our family. By no means do they replace Colt, but they do bring happiness when we are sad. We still talk about our son on a daily basis, and they know about their big brother in heaven.”

RED ROCKS’ BEST BUSINESSMEN PAIRED WITH ECHO & RIG DRINKS, DISCOVER THEIR RECIPE TO BEING BUSINESS SAVVY

Our annual “(Not) Shaken Not Stirred” feature is back. After the couple of years we’ve had, we may all feel like we were shaken and stirred. But there are some businessmen who led their companies through COVID-19 and have thrived. We asked them what their recipe for success is, and, as ingredient experts, we wanted to see what their drink of choice is, whether it is shaken or stirred.

For me, the keys to success start with achieving a solid work-life balance and family always comes first. Always act from a strong foundation of integrity – you own your reputation. Be passionate about what you do and maintain a positive attitude even in the face of adversity. You need to do the hard work and persistence and determination are key. Set goals and have a plan. Have confidence in your decision making. Surround yourself with smart people, share success, and recognize the people that have helped you become successful. And help those you work with be successful – it will pay big dividends back. Maintain a network of successful, individuals that have a positive outlook and inspire you. Practice humility and laugh often. A sense of humor makes every day better. Running a hospital during the pandemic demonstrated to me the importance of trust, teamwork, and respect at levels I’ve never experienced before. Early on, COVID was a very unknown, at times worrying, event that affected all staff and physicians. Having to be right here, on the front lines, caring for people fighting for their lives, and dealing with the concern for your own family, friends, and neighbors was an overwhelming emotion. The principles mentioned above along with faith and friendship brought everyone together. The intense dedication and focus on our patients and the value we brought to our community during this time allowed us to be successful for a two-year odyssey no one could have imagined. My Formula for Success: The Ability to Pivot + Flexibility x Grace = Success Prior to the pandemic, I served and led a team of insurance professionals as a broker with one of the country’s top financial marketing organizations. When the world moved into the pandemic, like millions of other professionals, I was forced to adjust my practice. I quickly pivoted from the world of face-to-face meetings to Google Meets, Zooms, and Teams meetings which saved my business while many others failed. Millions of people who were laid off or furloughed began looking for other ways to create income—thousands of which began to open their own businesses and become entrepreneurs. One of the many lessons I learned from the company I spent almost a decade working with is that no business can succeed without a plan, a team, and an ability to be bamboo, or flexible. Armed with this knowledge, I expanded my service offerings to

help these new business owners create the plan, the team, the foundations, and the backbones of their organizations through the establishment of our business development program. Simply put, we were able to connect our clients with subject matter experts (i.e., HR, legal, tax and accounting, marketing, funding, and personal finance) needed to be successful and beat the odds. With so many new business owners not waiting for a seat at the table to open but rather building their own dining areas, my gut told me they would need capital. After consulting with my funding expert, LeRoy Greene, CEO of Greenland’s Payment Services, we created EFA Capital. Capital, specifically the lack thereof, is one of the reasons many businesses fail. Therefore, we provide a white-glove service approach through grace that educates business owners, visionaries, and idealists about the mindsets and acumen of investors. My recipe for being business savvy is all about listening to people. Underneath every situation is a person with an ideal desired outcome. All of the successes I’ve had throughout my career are directly related to my ability to listen to the real needs of each person and then delivering on those needs.

CAR E E R A DV IC E | L IFE + CULTURE

The first thing I do to be successful is to make sure any project fits under my umbrella of four absolutes. That is, the project, must be a big win for: 1) Stakeholders 2) The Community 3) Employees 4) Guests If it only fits three of those absolutes, then it’s a no go for me. I believe this gives me the greatest chance of long-term success. Now it is up to me to execute the game plan and we do that by looking at our business from the top looking down, whereas the majority of businesses look at their business from the bottom looking up. The more tools we can provide to our business will again increase our chances of long-term success. I never lose focus on what the business is trying to achieve. And as part of the service industry our only goal is to service the needs of our guests. It is that simple. It is definitely not easy to do but the core philosophy is simple.

George J. Chanos

ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA VARGAS

Opening Doors and Opportunities in the NFT Space “A mind is like a parachute; it doesn’t work if it’s not open.” ~ Frank Zappa For George J. Chanos, this quote has become a motto for his latest venture, People Reign LLC. The former Nevada Attorney General launched this art studio and online trading platform last month to showcase and promote emerging artists and transparency in the growing NFT Space. “Most people know very little about NFTs or “Non-Fungible Tokens,” said Chanos. “They are not limited to digital art. They are a smart contract attached to a crypto token. The smart contract can represent anything of value. Anything you do with a contract you can do with NFT. You can buy a car, a home, or a business - using NFTs. They are an incredibly powerful new technological innovation.” Chanos - who is also a sought-after business advisor and strategist, speaker, and published author - is no stranger to pursuing the opportunities to learn and grow with the latest innovations. He said when an artist known as “Beeple” sold an NFT for $69 million at Christies in 2021, he decided that he needed to learn more about the NFT space. After some research, he recognized the long-term significance of this innovation and soon after created “People Reign.” And Chanos said his vision is beyond launching a new business venture; it’s about creating opportunities. “Art can be a powerful agent for social change,” said Chanos. “Prior to NFTs, opportunities for artists to get recognized, make a living, have a voice, and benefit greater society have been primarily for a select few within the fine art community. This is why we launched People Reign, because we believe block chain and NFTs present an unprecedented opportunity to empower artists, elevate their voices, and create positive economic and social value to humanity - today and tomorrow.”

An artist himself, Chanos paints, does sculptural assemblage, makes jewelry, and collects art. His writing also includes his latest book “Millennial Samurai: A Mindset for the 21st Century” that looks at the technological revolution, and how it will impact our lives over the next 3 decades. People Reign is working with approximately 20 artists and intends to expand to more than 50. How it works is the artist creates a piece of digital art and mints it on the block chain. They offer it for sale at a set price or auction it off on one of many NFT marketplaces – like Open Sea, Nifty Gateway, Makers Place, or Foundation Room. When someone buys it, the creator receives an automatic payment (equal to the designated residual set forth in the smart contract), into their crypto wallet. When the same art is resold by any subsequent buyer, the original creator receives that same designated residual - in perpetuity. The first group of artists to be featured on People Reign include the art of Billie Halliday, an unknown artist in the tradition of Banksy of London; Garilyn Brune, a deceased Los Angeles drag queen; Andy Young, also known as Strange Carrots; Lou Majors, a graphic designer and abstract artist famous for his graffiti art in Atlanta tagged “You are God;” and Shevi Al Faud, also known as veevinci, is a designer and illustrator from Bangladesh. “I’m excited to be included in the People Reign collection,” said Al Faud. “One of the biggest challenges for any artist is getting discovered. People Reign represents an opportunity to expose my art to a much larger audience, and I’m grateful for that opportunity.” A similar sentiment came from fellow artist Andy Young. “I believe NFTs are the future. The possibilities for creatives are extraordinary,” said Young. “I am very excited to be included in the People Reign Collection.” Having been called a “futurist” and a “visionary,” Chanos says he believes the world is at a “tipping point” and poised to either evolve into a “second enlightenment” or fall into “dystopian division.” He believes the choices we make over the next decade will profoundly influence our collective future over the next century. “The emerging NFT space is one of the fastest growing opportunities on the planet,” said Chanos. “It’s highly speculative, largely unregulated, and highly volatile. It is in one sense a speculative bubble, with a lot of worthless offerings. At the same time, it is a space in which some offerings have become incredibly valuable. It is not a fad. NFTs are here to stay, and they will only become more significant, more regulated, and more accepted as a medium of exchange. Today is ground zero in the NFT space. And that creates opportunities for those who can learn to successfully navigate the space.”

Vintage Jaguars LOCAL DEVELOPER AND HISTORICAL CAR COLLECTOR SHARES HISTORY OF JAGUAR

ARTICLE BY AIDA LASHUA PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN KNIPP

Vintage car collector Joel Laub boasts a long resume as a Las Vegas native, UNLV Rebel, business entrepreneur, land developer, home builder, owner of Joel Laub and Associates, and his current project, developer of The Reserve at Red Rock Canyon, an exclusive community of only 16 luxurious homes within the Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area. His latest venture illustrates how Joel recognizes and values quality, refinement, elegance, and sophistication. Beyond his projects, these virtues are also reflected in his lifestyle and interests, as displayed by his magnificent car collection. Laub started collecting Jaguars in the mid-90s and views the brand as iconic. He credits the British automaker with developing cutting-edge, high-performance vehicles capable of earning seven Le Mans—the 24-Hour endurance-focused sports

car race held annually near the town of Le Mans, France, and the world’s oldest active endurance racing event. Laub is extremely proud of his collection, especially his two 1965 E Type XKE’s, the coupe which Laub says “Enzo Ferrari found to be the most beautiful car ever designed,” and the XKE roadster with its identical match of exterior and interior color. Other prized and rare Jaguars in his collection include the 1949 XK120 alloy roadster, 1953 XK 120 open rally car, 1953 C Type (the C stands for Competition), and 1955 D Type Le Mans race cars. Laub confirms that “both the C and D Types won Le Mans, beating Ferrari, and are both considered extremely rare since only a few were produced specifically to race at Le Mans.” It is reported that only 53 C Types and 71 D Types were ever produced. The 1949 XK 120 alloy is also a rare and valuable antique; only 200 were built in aluminum, and Laub’s model is one of the few to survive. In contrast, there were 12,045 XK 120’s produced between 1949 and 1954, so they are more commonly found in collections and on the roads. Laub has shared his extensive and impressive vintage Jaguar automobile collection

with his friends at Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas. In fact, he has shared his vehicles at many customer appreciation events. “Joel has been a Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas customer for years, he has provided properties for many of our events, and he brings his classic cars to our showroom floor for events as well,” said Rick Nelson, who manages the events for Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas. “We appreciate and like to commemorate the history of Jaguar, and Joel helps us bridge the gap.” To that end, Joel will be bringing one of his classic Jaguars to an upcoming event hosted by Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas “Jags & Jets: Come Experience the Lifestyle” presented by Red Rock City Lifestyle Magazine and benefitting Miracle Flights. Come meet car enthusiasts, like Joel, and enjoy an evening out while raising critical funds to provide free flights for children in need of life-changing medical care. Golf EnVISION improving your game

It is said that golf is a life-long sport that most of us can play well into our twilight years mainly because it is a game that requires a great deal of concentration and passion, not necessarily physical ability. As Arnold Palmer said, “success in golf depends less on strength of body, more on strength of mind and character.” We often hear golfers discussing ways to improve their golf swing or handicap, yet rarely hear them talk about improving one of the most valuable assets in the game - their vision. As we age, or frankly at any age, our vision may deteriorate and affect our game. Shepherd Eye Center has “seen” this for years and has been caring for the eyes of Southern Nevada residents since its opening in 1968. Renowned worldwide for Dr. John R. Shepherd’s pioneering techniques and instrumentation that improved the way cataract surgery was performed, is still recognized for excellence and advancement in eye care and eye surgery, caring for many locals who want to enhance their vision for their personal, professional, and hobby lifestyles. on-site surgery center than any other eye practice in Nevada. Their team of trusted ophthalmologists and optometrists provide unparalleled vision care using the latest medical techniques, surgeries, and the most sophisticated technology. Robert Taylor, III, MD, who joined Shepherd Eye Center in 2001 and specializes in small incision cataract and refractive surgeries, sees patients daily that come in for help because they have realized they can’t see as well while playing golf. “It is a very common complaint. Golf is a difficult visual task,” says Dr. Taylor. He states that generally when having vision trouble, it is common to notice it first while playing golf, but even people with perfect vision have trouble seeing the golf ball flying at high rates of speed. A golf ball is only about 1.7 inches in diameter and typically white. At fast speeds, a golf ball moving against the low contrast of a blue sky or white clouds, is a very hard visual task for the eyes. Dr. Taylor’s recommendation to patients that start having issues seeing long distances is to “get an eye exam, because there can be a lot of reasons for changes in vision.” Dr. Taylor specifically advises golfers to “maximize their potential vision with the correct eyeglass’ prescription, refractive or cataract surgery.” Several PGA Tour golfers have had surgical procedures to ensure their best vision. Tiger Woods, for example, had LASIK and continued to win at an unprecedented rate after his laser surgery. It’s worth envisioning for yourself, and it may just improve your game.
