LIFESTYLE LETTER

Ladies!

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Camilla Dorand | camilla.dorand@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com

I have been so blessed to have met—and continue to meet—so many powerful and inspiring women! We celebrated International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month in March. In May, we continue to honor the women in our lives by celebrating Mother’s Day and recognizing phenomenal ladies in our community. This month, I hope you enjoy our stories about our community’s fearless females, Mommy burnout, and high-quality farmer’s market produce from a fantastic local female. In honor of our Ladies issue, I want to share with you one of my favorite quotes of all times, which I hope will inspire everyone to continue to shine their light into the world: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Marianne Williamson From my heart to yours,

JENNY O CALLERI “That’s why I love what I do. It’s all about amazing relationships. It’s why my clients keep coming back.”

When it comes to a business based on relationships, Jennifer Calleri knows exactly what that means. “That’s why I love what I do. It’s all about amazing relationships. It’s why my clients keep coming back.” Calleri or “Jenny O” as she’s better known, is the owner of Huntington Jewelers, the business she took over in 2018. A graduate gemologist, Calleri said it’s not surprising to find her sitting in the store with clients who have become close friends talking about things beyond what’s in their jewelry box. “I was just here with the wife of the doctor who delivered all of my children,” said Calleri. “I really get to know people who come into the store and build this connection with them. And once you have that trust, they really let you into not just their circle but their jewelry box. And for some, it’s not just a box; it’s a vault in their homes! Can you imagine the level of trust you must have with somebody for that to happen?!” Jenny O said when it comes to her advice for a new generation of women trying to achieve their dreams, it’s all about putting yourself out there and going for it. She said one of the proudest moments was when a young female employee she hired recently came and told her that Calleri had inspired her to go to gemology school. “That is what it is all about. Go for what you want. Nobody is going to give anything to you if you don’t ask for it,” said Calleri. “I got into this business because I love jewelry. So, I connected myself with the right people. I put myself out there. I wanted to have my own business, and it took 20 years, but I did it because I put myself out there.”

DEBBIE BANKO

“I started this business with about $9000, a fax machine, the cheapest cell phone you could buy, and two fans to keep my computer from breaking down,” laughed Banko.

For Debbie Banko, the CEO and Managing Partner of Link Technologies, she had no choice but to be fearless when she launched her company in her kitchen as a single mother more than 20 years ago. “I started this business with about $9000, a fax machine, the cheapest cell phone you could buy, and two fans to keep my computer from breaking down,” laughed Banko. Today Link Technologies is a multi-million-dollar company that connects companies and government agencies with the most talented IT professionals and services. She has built the company in a male-dominated field to be one of the most visible names in the IT services and consulting industry. As one of the leaders in this field, Banko said it comes down to always working hard for her customers. “This is a sales organization. You close the sales by doing the work,” said Banko. “We have grown by reputation and by getting the job done. Without clients, you don’t have a business. If I don’t have great employees, I also don’t have a business. So, it’s about both.” Banko said it when it comes to supporting other female business leaders; it’s a no-brainer. Both her daughters have worked at Link Technologies. Her business has also always been made up of at least 50 percent women employees. But when she makes her hires, Banko describes her philosophy for success this way: “I need to hire the most qualified people. Don’t let me NOT hire them because they are women,” said Banko. “I am a big women’s advocate. I hired someone who was pregnant just the other day. I have no problem with that. She was dialed in and a single mom like I was. We can’t only focus on hiring women in general but hiring the right people.”

TIMEA SZEPESI For realtor and mother of two, Timea Szepesi, she knows a thing or two about hiring the right people. She recently found the perfect partnership in another woman who has since become not just a colleague but a friend. “Michelle has the best heart. When she works, it’s not just about making money, she really cares about her clients, and I am really drawn to that.” Szepesi, a realtor and team lead at Urban Nest Realty, said she and Michelle Bradford started working together a few years ago. Szepesi, a 40 under 40 Award winner and top 1 percent agent in Las Vegas, took Bradford under her wings when she joined her team and became her mentor. Szepesi said she had a bad experience with one of her early mentors and vowed to be different for others following in her footsteps. “I had a mentor who took advantage of me, and I never wanted to do that,” said Szepesi. “For many women or men entering this business, my best advice is to get the right mentor. It’s an investment that will pay off. To come into this business and try to do it all yourself is very challenging. You can make big mistakes, and there are a lot of sharks.”

MICHELLE BRADFORD For Bradford, she said meeting and working with Szepesi was also a blessing and a decision that changed her life. “She has a huge heart, and I call her my angel. She calls me her angel,” said Bradford. “We work off each other’s strengths and weaknesses really well. Her strength is getting the clients and winning them over. My strength is doing the paperwork. I am very meticulous. Even though Timea has a lot more experience, she’s open to learning from me. We both don’t have egos. When we make mistakes, we apologize, and if we don’t know something, we admit it.” Szepesi said she also has nothing but mutual respect and trust for her friend and partner, and she said as women, aside from supporting each other, take pride in who you are, especially as a mother. She recounts one story that sums up that you don’t have to discount any part of yourself to find success. “I had my first 1-million-dollar listing, and my client said the only way you could miss this showing is if you gave birth, and that’s exactly what I did. I missed it because I was giving birth to my baby,” said Szepesi. “But three days after that, I went with my newborn to sign the listing! My client was impressed. They are still with me today. We had a personal bond because of that.”

LIZ WERNER “Chase the dream, not the competition.” That’s been a life and work motto for Liz Werner, a Las Vegas native and owner and founder of Furniture Market. She and her husband opened the business in 2007, and it has since grown into one of the most successful luxury finishing retailers in Southern Nevada. “We really focus on what we want our store to be and not what the other retailers are doing,” said Werner. “What I love about what I do is I get to see someone’s vision come to life. When a client walks into our store, they usually have some ideas about what they like - colors, textures, furniture styles, etc. But being able to bring all these elements together and see a look of awe and delight on a client’s face is so rewarding.” When it comes to leading this business as a woman, she compares that to the experience her clients see when walking into her store. “We like to think that Furniture Market provides clients with possibilities. When they walk into our showroom, they see what is possible in their home. I think the same holds true for women leaders. If you can see the possibilities, then it can happen.” Being in the Valley for nearly 15 years, Furniture Market continues to grow with more people moving here from across the country. Werner said what she wants to show the younger generation, including her own two daughters, is that as long as you work hard and love what you do, anything is possible. “With my children, every day I made sure they see how I own my role as a leader and owner, right alongside their father,” said Werner. “Women can make bold, wise decisions and still bring a family-like culture to an organization. Our organization is driven by women, in both staff we hire and the clients we work with. We see all the possibilities here.”

“Our organization is driven by women, in both staff we hire and the clients we work with. We see all the possibilities here.”

THE INTUITIVE FORAGER KERRY CLASBY SHARES HOW TO EAT HEALTHY WITH JUST-PICKED PRODUCE AT HER FARMERS MARKETS AND MALIBU FARM

28

EAT R IGH T | HEA LTH + WE LLNE S S

Kerry Clasby, the founder of Intuitive Forager, is a true renaissance woman. She is an educator, public speaker, published writer, acclaimed forager. Clasby is the consummate professional when it comes to foraging and farmers markets. Additionally, she is one of the original pioneers of culinary foraging. For more than two decades, she has been sourcing top-quality-rarefied produce for celebrity chefs with world-renowned restaurants in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York.

KERRY CL ASBY

You would think this forager grew up on a farm as a young girl, but that is not the case, making her story even more intriguing. Clasby is a Boston native who studied Political Science at Boston College before working in the corporate world at IBM and Xerox. Things changed after attending The French Cooking School in Boston; she envisioned a more naturalist cooking approach than a ‘traditional’ style. It was then that Kerry discovered her talent and her mission. In 1993, all started to come together when she started, managed, and implemented the strategic growth of California’s first CSA program through the Waldorf Education Network. From these connections and inspiration for this project, she started an heirloom tomato farm and foraged wild mushrooms in the winter. These ‘flagship products’ were the beginning of the Intuitive Forager and a flourishing Farm-to-Table movement, and she never looked back. “I was an organic farmer on Cape Cod which was great unless a bad storm would wipe out my early crops,” said Clasby. “When I came to California, I thought I would be here for a year. But I could grow things all year round here. I volunteered at the Malibu Fig Ranch has been growing organically since 1954. When they eventually needed a ranch manager, I took it over. I am a tenant farmer, and we run a community farm that is 16 acres perched above the Pacific. What I cannot grow myself, I source from other farmers.” Over the years, Clasby has become the face and voice of the family farmer to master chefs. “I ended up moving here with my husband, and we would travel back and forth weekly from California. I went to the farmers market and thought this was ridiculous and started bringing coolers of produce to the back door of restaurants. Chefs Mario Batali and Nancy Silverman understood what I was doing, and Mario was going to open three restaurants in Vegas and wanted my produce. That is how I got started years ago.” CONTINUED >

“WE ARE MORE THAN A FARMERS MARKET; WE ARE A THRIVING, BUSTLING COMMUNITY LOOKING TO ONE ANOTHER FOR RESOURCES, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, TRAINING, AND EVEN FUN AS OUR URBAN AREAS REINVENT THEMSELVES.”

An active proponent of great food, sustainability, and a healthy lifestyle, Kerry continues to forage with many projects in the works, including new and exciting things at the Intuitive Foragers Farmers Markets in Las Vegas Malibu Fig Ranch. “I vet everyone and where the food comes from, and I know the growing practices,” said Clasby. For decades, this renaissance forager has been culling through the farms and fields of California’s small family farms, gaining a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable aggregators in the industry teaching people how to eat. Clasby works closely with her team and hundreds of organic farmers to create an exclusive Farm Box that selects the highest quality produce from certified organic farms, including her farm in Malibu. Your nose will immediately recognize the Intuitive Forager Farm Box when aromas of fresh herbs, ripe tomatoes, sweet carrots, perfectly picked fruit, and rows of new crops jump right out of your very own box. Her just-picked organic produce from California’s premier farms, fields, and orchards are hand-selected for the Intuitive Forager Farm Box and delivered directly to your home, office, and kitchen. Think of it as handcrafted artisanal goods inclusive. The market is bursting with nutritious produce grown in

uncontaminated conditions. The healthiest living soil provides the maximum immune-boosting benefits, ensuring you can continue eating healthy organic farm-to-table food. Clasby’s Markets are an event in their own right! They host chef demonstrations by some of the most reputable personalities in the trade and culinary events showcasing local artisans’ hand-curated products from tea to spices. There are even Children’s activities, homeschooling groups, festivals, yoga classes, and educational seminars. “My Markets have become a converging point where chef-private and public sector alike, share skills, information, ideas, and solutions to a more sustainable way of life. We are more than a farmers market; we are a thriving, bustling community looking to one another for resources, intellectual property, training, and even fun as our urban areas reinvent themselves,” said Kerry. Awarded Best of Las Vegas for over a decade, the Intuitive Forager Farmers Markets offer the largest selection of organic produce and locally sourced products in Nevada. Over 600 farms and thousands of varieties of produce grace the Markets farm stands throughout the seasons. Downtown 3rd, located in the heart of the Las Vegas Revitalization Project, is open every Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Giving Back Through Pageantry

Mrs. Nevada-America 2021 shares the true role pageantry has in giving back to our community ARTICLE BY LIZA RUAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGINA VAUGHAN

“It’s important to start building our young women up physically, mentally, and emotionally from a young age.”

While many of our lives were different a year ago than they are today, for Nevada Native Sarah Banda, her life took a surprisingly pleasant turn. Banda’s day-to-day consisted of working as an attorney for Naqvi Injury Law, being a mother, and bettering her community. But now, she serves as the reigning Mrs. Nevada-America. Here, Banda shares details of her new life and current ventures since her crowning. Banda admittedly expressed that she knew very little about the pageantry world before competing — her knowledge revolved around the more “superficial” glitz and glam elements. Last April, by serendipitous luck, a delegate approached and asked her if she would be interested in competing together. Where Banda lacked pageantry knowledge, she knew she had an infinite love for challenges and new experiences. With only about three months to prepare, Banda dove headfirst into the pageant world, and what she found was a pleasant surprise. The Mrs. America system directly aligned with her passion – giving back to the community. Alongside other inspiring, hard-working, and intelligent women, Banda found a sisterhood she didn’t know she was missing. In the seven months since Banda was crowned Mrs. Nevada-America, she has organized and appeared in more than 30 events and worked with more than 20 organizations. Immediately after her crowning, she attended a salon takeover at Dolce Salon – where local girls received the “full VIP treatment.” Most recently, she organized a photoshoot and picnic with local “warrior girls.” She spent a few hours getting to know them better, learning about their dreams, and creating memories she calls “unforgettable.”

“To be Mrs. Nevada-America also means that you are responsible for ensuring everyone knows they are welcome, accepted, and included in the sisterhood,” Banda shared. Banda has a “Keys to Empowerment” platform geared towards helping young girls and women discover their “limitless potential.” She coaches developmental programs such as “Girls on the Run,” geared towards developing strong women by building them up physically, mentally, and emotionally. “As women, we wear so many hats. We are mothers, wives, entrepreneurs, stay-at-home moms, friends, etc. We spread ourselves thin, and we forget the importance of self-care. We forget that we are best able to take care of others and of all of our other responsibilities if we are mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy. Therefore, it’s important to start building our young women up physically, mentally, and emotionally from a young age.” Banda enjoys helping young girls and women get out of their comfort zone and become “anything and everything” they want in life; this is why she loves pageantry. “Pageantry forces you to self-reflect, figure out what matters most to you, and become the best version of yourself.” Now fully immersed in the pageant world, she believes in the work Mrs. Nevada state representatives put into our communities and believes many other women in our community would be “amazing and influential” representatives as well. For those interested in giving back to the community and becoming involved with the sisterhood of pageantry, Banda shares the next 2022 Mrs. Nevada-America Pageant will take place June 10th-12th at the Santa Fe Station, and the public is welcome.

CHOOSING BALANCE OVER BURNOUT

Kam Green

Editor’s Note: Local Kam Green is a mother to three children, an author, speaker, and positive self-talk advocate. Her latest book is entitled-Yup, You Got This- Positive Self-Talk to Help You Get Up & Thrive. Additionally, she has published four children’s books under her pen name Kam Vivi Verde.

I remember it like it was yesterday; I finished a long week of work with a happy hour at Brio Italian Grille and then went right into a weekend of “Mom Duties.” With a long list from soccer to flag football, theater to swim, birthday parties, and last-minute requests for an upcoming dance performance. Then I remember getting the message: “All schools across the state will be closed.” With that, most things came to a screeching halt. The first few days, I welcomed the pause in activity. I embraced the downtime and reflected on the fact that our schedule had been

slightly unreasonable. Then week one turned into week two, and week two turned into nearly two years of a completely different way of living. So, here we are again embracing a new normal — somewhat optimistically and eagerly with a side of caution. As things began to reopen, the feeling of rushing back to fill the gap and any deficits we felt our children had, was roaring in many of us. Perhaps we felt the need to make up for lost time, take advantage of every opportunity, and RSVP to every party. But is racing back into a packed schedule with no room to pause, be present, or process really what we want? As we move into this next phase, I believe it is important to be intentional and consistently choose balance over burnout. Let’s explore a few simple ways to do so.

1. STOP AND TAKE STOCK The first tendency that we have when we get behind is to try to play catch up, but we often miss a step in the rush to catch up — that is the “taking stock.” We often find ourselves racing forward with a plan without this critical step. If we think it will be good for our kids, as moms, we feel like we must find a way to make it happen, especially after the past two years. But what we should do before we fill the calendar is align with our family priorities and consider the time commitments and our kids’ level of interest. Make a list of all the activities that everyone is interested in, open the calendar, and start the conversation. And we shouldn’t have this conversation alone; we should include our children. It’s important for them to think through and identify what a balanced life looks like. For the longest time, having my daughter play club soccer did not align with our family priorities, and we would always turn down the opportunity, and I am grateful I was able to “stop and take stock” because it truly didn’t fit in those times. “I TELL MY CHILDREN ALL THE TIME, ‘WE LIVE IN A COMMUNITY, AND FOR THIS TO WORK, WE ALL HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE. NO ONE PERSON SHOULD DO EVERYTHING WHILE EVERYONE ELSE BENEFITS.’”

2. SCHEDULE PAUSES We appreciated the time to pause for part of our time in quarantine, even if it was for a moment. Yes, there were times, maybe more than others, that we felt like we didn’t need anything else to be cancelled. But what mom has time to pause when there is so much to catch up on? Whether you’re a working mom, single mom, or a mom who, despite every effort to take stock, is constantly shuttling children around to appointments or activities, the idea of pausing may sound unreasonable after the two years we’ve just had. While it might seem that way, it is extremely important in the matter of balance. And let me be clear, when I say a “pause,” I’m not thinking of a full “spa day.” While those are great, and if you can do those, you should. The kind of pause I am talking about is choosing to RSVP “no” for no other reason than “I need a minute.” Or taking three to five minutes to sit still, close your eyes, take some deep breaths, stretch out your arms, and do nothing. Three to five minutes doesn’t sound like a lot of time, but it is. Research shows that a few minutes of meditation goes a long way. It can help reduce stress, improve our concentration level, and increase our self-awareness. During quarantine, I would often tell my kids when I worked from home, “Mom is commuting now, so I’ll have to get back to you,” to give myself that space to pause before I started my day. And we absolutely still need that. So, consider pausing at some point in every day. The pause will give you perspective, help you take stock, and improve your mood and mindset. Take a pause for the cause, and the cause is you.

3. FORGIVE YOURSELF During the height of the pandemic, I’m sure we all felt like we weren’t getting it right when it came to parenting. The often juggling between work, multiple

40

children’s academic needs, meals, and the lack of a break or external activities caused many of us to feel we were falling short. And maybe we saw the Pinterestperfect home classrooms with seamless lunch times and room for flawlessly executed Tik Tok videos and thought, “Clearly, I’m missing something.” Of course, it’s easy to beat yourself up, especially when it comes to our children. However, we must accept that we won’t always get it right and forgive ourselves. We can’t pile guilt on top of guilt; that’s too heavy a load to bear. When we walk around weighed down by our past mistakes, it leaves little room for freedom to have new successes and happy memories with our children. Remind yourself you’re human.

4. GET HELP One of the biggest mistakes we can make as moms is thinking that we have to and should do it all. We must set boundaries and not overextend ourselves and take advantage of the support around us. Whether it’s a spouse, family, a babysitter, a friend, or maybe your church community — find the people who can help and let them. If you have kids who are walking, use them. You should never look at the house and laundry and think, “How will I get all of this done?” Round the children up and teach them what it means to live in a community. I tell my children all the time, “We live in a community, and for this to work, we all have to contribute. No one person should do everything while everyone else benefits.” We are caretakers for our children, and part of that is showing them how to be responsible. If we want to choose a life of balance over burnout, we must make sure we share the load of responsibilities and get help when needed. CONTINUED >

5. CHOOSE POSITIVITY, OVER PERFECTION Last but certainly not least, remind yourself every day that perfection doesn’t exist. Don’t look over the fence at the perfectly made dinner or Instagram-decorated home with kids that seemingly always make the grade or the goal and feel bad. On days when you feel like you don’t have it figured out, remind yourself that it isn’t a requirement. On those days where your child misbehaves during the entire grocery store trip, doesn’t want to do any of their homework, disagrees with everything you say from the time they arrive home, and in a matter of moments

rattles your whole peace of mind; remember you’re not alone. Take a deep breath, forgive yourself, and trust that it will all be okay. And acknowledge that OK might look different from day to day. Tell your child you love them, you’re proud of them, and be transparent about your shortcomings to remind them and yourself that no one is perfect. Every day and from moment to moment, give yourself grace. Use positive self-talk to remind you to embrace all your vibes and choose balance over burnout so you can - Get Up & Thrive.
