LIFESTYLE LETTER

It’s Time to Explore!

April 2022 PUBLISHER

Camilla Dorand | camilla.dorand@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com

Merriam-Webster has given the word “explore” three definitions: 1. To look at something in a careful way to learn more about it. 2. To talk or think about something in a thoughtful and detailed way. 3. To learn about something by trying it. Learning how to live life with open arms and a sense of curiosity allows us to be constantly surprised, and a lot of the time, a sense of wonder. Now that we seem to be heading to a more “normal” situation around the globe, we might feel brave enough to start exploring life again. When I say explore, I don’t necessarily mean getting on a plane and going somewhere different. We can explore things in our own beautiful side of town. Be it new restaurants (or even a different dish compared to a familiar one), stores that we never thought of going into, new art galleries, or even a hike in Red Rock Canyon. We can go to the same place over and over again and still experience it differently. All we must do is open our hearts and let go of judgment. This month’s issue is filled with articles from some of our partners, who are experts in helping people explore places. In Synergy Ketamine Therapy Center’s story, you will find out how you can restore and recover from your excursions. We’ve also launched our travel section with our very first trip to the island of Bonaire. Keep an eye out for future travel articles so you can get great ideas to plan your next vacation. We also want future generations to continue to explore this beautiful life. This means that we need to continuously protect the environment. Sol-Up has incredible products that can help you do your part for a healthier planet, so make sure to read how. I hope to have inspired you to think of your life as full of beautiful possibilities worth exploring. Look at people, things, and places with a new perspective and let them surprise you. From my heart to yours,

Synergy Ketamine Therapy Center — offering help, hope, and healing LOCAL KETAMINE TREATMENT AND IV HYDRATION PROVIDER LEADS THE WAY FOR NEW AND INNOVATIVE THERAPY FOR MOOD AND PAIN DISORDERS ARTICLE BY MARY M. ZUKOWSKI As you walk into the Synergy Ketamine Therapy Center, you are drawn to the stunning mural of soft gold turning trees and water streaming into waterfalls that you can almost hear. Perhaps telling of the journey or transformation to a more peaceful being, what Ketamine Therapy is all about. It has been called the “miracle drug” for treating depression, even those who may be considered treatment-resistant. It has shown outstanding results for chronic pain disorders, those suffering from PTSD, anxiety, OCD, fibromyalgia, migraines, substance abuse recovery, and so much more. It is said you must “disconnect to reconnect.” Like how we feel when we take the perfect trip to the beach or breathe in fresh, crisp mountain air. With Ketamine, the neurons in your brain begin to reconnect, producing more positive thinking. Most patients receiving therapy have said that it has dramatically changed their life. Even after just one dose, they may feel the lifting effects and significantly less pain. I recently met with Lee Dockins RN, MS, PA-C, and felt his immediate enthusiasm

about the Synergy Ketamine Therapy Center. Lee himself received infusion therapy for chronic pain. Like so many, he had exhausted other options and was dulling the pain with daily medications. After receiving Ketamine therapy, he felt so much better that he became passionate about wanting to help others. He and his wife Susan, APN-BC, are now the heartbeat of the Synergy Ketamine Therapy Center, daily guiding individuals through infusion therapies with compassion and state-ofthe-art care. Offering a whole approach to therapy sessions, they are there with you through your entire treatment. Whether it’s to talk with you or just listen to music, they will be by your side, never leaving the room. It’s their mission to guide and encourage you to enhance your healing journey. They also offer extended services. For example, a chronic pain sufferer who receives Ketamine can follow with a stretching session for longer-term relief. Ketamine Therapy is also a very affordable treatment. A unique aspect is its fast responsiveness. Traditionally it may

Typically, one may receive treatment three times a week for a few weeks, then wind down to every other week, and then finally return for boosters only when needed. It does not require the heavy financial burden of forever, and the industry is pushing for more insurance coverage. Synergy Ketamine Therapy Center was founded by local residents Dr. Carlo Ponti and Chief Executive Officer Mikel Alvarez. They are excited to bring this type of healing to the valley. The Center is open seven days a week and has evening hours to accommodate diverse schedules. Infusion therapy also expands into many other beneficial areas, like hydration and vitamin B cocktails. Maybe you need some pep after a big event or are nursing a hangover. Do you need a lift because you are recovering from COVID exhaustion? Or perhaps a long spring break trip? It can be helpful to boost your immune system before flu season with a powerful dose of vitamins. With Ketamine and infusion therapies, there is help, there is hope, and there is healing!

Research has also shown a 60% reduction in particulates from car exhaust fumes on streets lined with trees. Health/Well-Being: Trees have proven to have a positive impact on skin cancer, asthma, hypertension, and other stress related illness by filtering out polluted air, reducing smog formation, providing shade from solar radiation, and creating an attractive, calming setting for recreation. BEAUTIFUL BONAIRE INSIGHTFUL TRAVEL JOURNAL TO THE DIVER’S PARADISE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAMILLA DORAND

Unchartered territory - on the way to Rincón

26

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L

My two favorite things in life are learning and traveling. My husband and I usually go scuba diving during the holidays, and we had looked for the ideal spot to celebrate the end of 2021. We heard that Bonaire is “the diver’s paradise.” Upon research, we discovered that Bonaire is a beautiful island in the southern Caribbean just a few miles off the coast of Venezuela, where its currency is the US Dollar. We decided that was the location for our 2021 holiday getaway. Here are some fun facts about beautiful Bonaire: there are only two towns on the island, the capital Kralendijk (creh-len-dike) and Rincón. Kralendijk has grocery stores, banks, offices, and restaurants/ bars that are open daily. You can easily spot the tourist information store as soon as you get to the downtown area. Most restaurants do not open every day of the week, and a lot of them only serve dinner; knowing this ahead of time can help you make plans accordingly. The best months to scuba dive in Bonaire are September and October because there is very little to no wind, which allows for very clear waters. Rincón is a lot quieter than Krelendijk and has the best place to try the island’s local dish, stew. Posada Para Mira is the place to go if that’s what you are craving. The most popular stews that they serve are goat and iguana. Be mindful that this place is only open on certain days of the week. Even though Dutch is the native language in Bonaire, Papiamento is the most widely spread language spoken. You can also communicate in English and Spanish, if necessary. We stayed at The Bellafonte Luxury Oceanfront Hotel, an oceanfront complex with amazing views. Waiting for us in our room was a chilled bottle of bubbly and a wonderful arrangement of lush local

Washington-Slagbaai National Park

flowers that lasted the entire two weeks we were there! The staff at The Bellafonte was extremely helpful by making reservations in the best restaurants around the island and helping us with anything else that we needed or wanted. Our diving trips have always included guided boat dives that take us to gorgeous locations in the middle of the ocean. In Bonaire, however, diving is completely different, and that is what makes it “the diver’s paradise.” As we drove around the island, we realized there was no such thing as “boat diving.” People actually park their cars by the shore, gear up, and simply walk over to the water to dive. Bonaire is all about “shore-diving.” Being our first time on the island, we used the scuba shop Dive Friends Bonaire to ensure we were taken to some of the best spots. Our two favorites were the Salt Pier and the Oil Slick, where we saw so many types, sizes, and colors of sea creatures. There were turtles, octopus, queen of hearts, barracudas, parrotfish, swordfish, squid, sea urchins, and dolphins, just to name a few. The Salt Pier is a great diving spot because the fish are gathered around the platform’s structure at a shallow depth, where the water is usually crystal clear. Bonaire is not just about diving, though. During our time there, we discovered incredible restaurants with cuisines from all over the world. Sebastian’s, an oceanfront luxurious restaurant with exquisite dishes and an extensive wine list should be kept for a special night. The view from Sebastian’s is simply amazing. Be sure to get there at sunset to fully enjoy it. Downtown Bonaire also has great restaurants to explore, and La Cantina was the one that stood out to us. It has a fun and casual atmosphere that offers tasty (and dangerous) drinks! The Passion Mojito was my favorite! Depending on what time of year you plan on visiting Bonaire, make sure to always make reservations. Otherwise, you will miss out.

Sunset from the deck at the Bellafonte

The island also has beach clubs where you can just chill and lounge. The Ocean Oasis has a great atmosphere, food, and drinks. Staying at The Bellafonte, you will have perks like complimentary shuttle, bubbly, and VIP seats by the water. Bonaire has a huge park at the top of the island, the Washington-Slagbaai National Park. It can only be visited by car, and you have two loops to choose from. The longer one can take between 2.5 to 4 hours to complete, and it takes you around the upper edge of the island, where you can see the settlers’ ruins, interesting geographical formations, goats, natural springs, and, of course, diving spots. If you don’t want to spend that much time exploring the park, you can choose the shorter path that takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. We recommend that you drive a 4-wheel car for this visit because the terrain is rough. The park has absolutely no service, so make sure that your car has a full tank of gas and that you have food and water. Two other activities made our vacation in Bonaire memorable. One was flamingo spotting all around the island. The flamingos look majestic with their long thin legs and beautiful vivid pink feathers. Bonaire flamingos have an intense pink coloring due to what they eat - small pink salt shrimps and micro-organisms in the water that have turned pink by algae, bacteria, and beta-carotene. Their beauty is hypnotizable. Bonaire has one of four sanctuaries in the world where flamingos breed, the Pekelmeer, which means “salt lake” in Dutch. Tourists are not allowed in the area, but you can watch them on the side of the road using binoculars. The Cadushy Distillery in Rincón offers tastings of liquors, rum, gin, vodka, and whiskey, all made from the island cactus. In fact, Bonaire has the only cactus-vodka in the world, whereas the other vodkas are made of rye or potatoes. It definitely has a distinct taste to it. Now that you know, what are you waiting for? Visit Beautiful Bonaire!

Las Vegas’ Premier Energy Efficiency Company

Brings the Heat Sol-Up Wins First-Place at the 2022 Solar Games 32

LOCA L’S CH OICE | HOM E S E RVI CE S

It’s no surprise America’s City of Lights is home to premier energy efficiency company, Sol-Up. What’s more, for the second year in a row, Sol-Up’s installation team bested those of solar companies from around the country during the 2022 Solar Games in California. Held in Long Beach, the 2022 Intersolar North America + Energy Storage North America Conference welcomed thousands of attendees representing hundreds of solar efficiency organizations from around the globe. A highlight of the conference is the annual Solar Games, a competition showcasing the expertise of leading national and international solar efficiency companies. Taking home first place in this year’s Solar Games was Vegas’ own Sol-Up. The annual competition works by pitting top talent from leading U.S. solar companies against one another to see who can install a solar-plus-storage system based on the highest quality, safety, and speed. Consisting of three rounds and judged by a panel of experts from leaders in the industry, including the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners and Solar Energy International, the competition tasked teams with building on- and off-grid residential solar and storage systems. Defending their previous championship, once again Sol-Up came in first place and was named the 2022 Solar Games Champion. When it comes to providing commercial and residential solar efficiency on the west coast, Sol-Up reigns supreme in both Southern and Northern Nevada. Founded in 2009 from the vision of German engineer Frank Rieger, Sol-Up is Nevada’s first pure solar energy company. With more than 310 sunny days per year, Rieger knew early on the enormous solar resource Nevada had to offer and anticipated the future consumer demand for clean energy.

of educating the community about the benefits of using solar energy,” said Rieger. As the only company in Las Vegas to offer consumers an on-site showroom, Sol-Up invites potential clients to see the panels first-hand and learn about the environmental and financial benefits of switching to solar energy. Benefits of using solar energy to power your home or commercial building include sustainable and clean electricity derived from sunlight, as well as drastically lower energy bills and an increase in home value. “We have seen unprecedented growth over the last year. People realize how much sense solar power makes. Both long-time

Nevada residents and those moving here from California are looking for the advantages of solar power,” said Rieger. In their quest to help consumers reach whole-home energy efficiency, Sol-Up recently expanded their product offerings to include a line of energy-efficient windows and doors and green cleaning products. As the only Energy Star certified company for 11 years in a row, ProVia windows and doors installed by Sol-Up aim to keep homes cool during hot summers while decreasing energy consumption and power bills for homeowners, making Sol-Up the clear winner in energy efficiency here in Nevada.

INTERIOR DESIGNER'S TAILORED SUCCESS—ONE IDEA AT A TIME ARTICLE BY PATRANYA BHOOLSUWAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY BETHANY PAIGE

For Southern Nevada native Kristin Calderon, her love for interior design began as a hobby when she was a full-time, stay-at-home mom for more than 12 years. “I was doing it for friends and family. It was fun,” said Calderon. “I attended UNLV for 2 years studying graphic arts and interior design but got pregnant and never graduated.” When she got divorced, Calderon said she had to fight feelings of insecurity while applying for jobs because she thought she wasn’t qualified without a college degree. Then she got an offer and a boost of confidence from one local interior design firm that took a chance on her. “The owner told me that when it comes to this field, you either ‘have it or you don’t,’” said Calderon. “And they knew I had it—passion, drive, and creativity. Those are things I look for now when I hire employees.” Calderon is the founder and owner of “The Idea Room.” The business started as a design center but has grown to include a brand-new furniture showroom and attached retail store featuring lifestyle products and an e-commerce site called “Copper & Tweed.” “When I started this business in 2016, we called it ‘The Idea Room’ because I was working out of one room in my house,” said Calderon. I had two workers then. Now we have 18 employees.” Calderon said the pandemic led to more business than ever before for her team, with more people moving to Nevada over the last year from all over the country. “That’s why we needed a brick-and-mortar space. Our showroom is where people come in to look at the furniture and our lifestyle boutique, which includes everything from kitchen and bath accessories to lamps and rugs and even handbags,” said Calderon. “Las Vegas is definitely one of the most diversified cities for

interior design, and that’s because the people here are from everywhere, and many of them want their homes ready to “live-in” as soon as possible.” The Idea Room offers services from remodeling, custom woodwork, staging, and furniture purchases for both residential and commercial spaces. And Calderon said she takes pride in the fact that she can offer her customers wholesale pricing for furniture and other home pieces, from which she works with more than 200 manufacturers from around the world. “I understand that people have different budgets, and we tailor our services to that,” said Calderon. “I would say our style is modern-transitional. We are on-trend but transitional to each client, so they can make their space their own and not one that necessarily looks like a model home.” While Calderon is excited to see her business grow (seven new workers were hired during the pandemic alone), she says there are still challenges similar to ones many other small business owners face during these unstable economic times. “We have seen material costs jump over and over the past year, and furniture prices going up 10 to 20 percent,” said Calderon. “Despite that, we have not raised our design prices. We are hoping prices will soon drop a bit so everyone can afford what they are looking for.” As for what’s next for The Idea Room, Calderon said success has given her the flexibility to spend more time with her family. She remarried three years ago and now has two stepsons along with her three children. Calderon says like any mom can attest, you work hard and get things done because that’s what you have to do. The difference is finding the career and people that give you joy. “I think going through hardships and twists and turns in life gives you even more drive to reach your goals,” said Calderon. “Creating beautiful spaces is an outlet for me. You are giving joy to your customers. It’s a beautiful thing.”

Visit Music City

Getaway to Nashville

and ‘Write Your Own Music City Story’

Write your own music story. That’s exactly what the chefs, artists, historians, musicians and impassioned locals of Nashville want visitors to do as they dive into this culturally diverse and oh-so-friendly city. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Music City to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this city rich in experiences that only Nashville can give. It’s a destination drenched in distinction with elevated tastes, down-home charm and a range of discoveries both well-known and emerging—Nashville is ready to rock your world. With recent headlines such as “Top destinations for food and city lovers” (Tripadvisor), “Most anticipated hotel openings of 2022” (Forbes), and “Top global venues for live music” (Tennessean), Nashville has so much more than you’ve ever imagined, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. Whether you’re a Nashville enthusiast or a novice soon to cross this off your domestic bucket list, you will love the medley of past meets present and Southern roots paired with modern amenities. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville boasts an impressive array of destinations, including luxurious hotels such as the Sheraton Grand in the heart of downtown, Urban Cowboy, Noelle and The Hermitage Hotel, which houses the upscale restaurant Drusie and Darr, led by world-renowned chef Jean-Gorges. Come and enjoy a truly elevated dining experience that reflects the new era of Nashville.

When ready to absorb the historic side of the city, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, offers guests “historic tours, family tours, wine and food pairings, bourbon tastings and chef-inspired food and wine pairings” that are unparalleled in their local experience. Likewise, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous. Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated—the food scene! Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. People know how good the food scene is, but if they really want to find those independent chef-driven restaurants like Rolf and Daughters, FOLK, Bastion, Locust, or Henrietta Red, these are the chefs that garner a lot of attention that you won’t want to miss. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, streets art, public art, art galleries and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. According to @visitmusiccity, “Everyone should do the Grand Ole Opry one night; it’s not just about the music, it’s a piece of history and the world’s longest running radio show.”

As for the lay of the land, Nashville is definitely a city of neighborhoods. East Nashville is funky, artsy, trendy and quirky. Germantown is a little more upscale with its chef-driven restaurants and walkable nature, known as Nashville’s first neighborhood founded by German settlers. 12South has eateries, boutique shopping and a lot of local favorites. Wedgewood-Houston is in transition mode right now with great breweries, distilleries, bakeries and art galleries. In the end, they all have their own scene. Plus, you can shop your heart out at a wealth of boutiques, galleries and local maker shops, as well as Nashville’s upscale The Mall at Green Hills brimming with luxury stores such as Golden Goose and Gucci. Last but not least is the music scene. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, honky tonk, rock, symphony or quite literally any genre of music imaginable, Nashville has it all. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe. The music is different every night everywhere, so one is best served by referring to visitmusiccity.com for their Upcoming Concerts Calendar to soak up all the magnificent sounds. And, what better way to bestow a no-questions-asked travel itinerary than with the locals’ knowledge. “Once people experience the genuine hospitality of Nashville to the level they do, many are surprised by how incredibly friendly people are.” - Visit Music City

“Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, streets art, public art, art galleries, and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings.”

We’ve used Joe DiRaffaele to buy and sell our homes multiple times over the past two decades, this time I gave him the ultimate challenge. Sell my existing home for top dollar and get me a good deal on our next home, coordinate the timing so that I am not homeless during the process. A daunting task in today’s crazy market.
