“Home is where the heart is” - Elvis Presley.

Matthew Endersbe

When I was six years old, I went to live in Lagos, Nigeria, with my family. After four years, we returned to Brazil. Six years later, I was on the road again for another year abroad. Living internationally became a natural part of my life, and I loved it! The downside is that I never really felt like I belonged anywhere. I never felt like I had a home. My heart and my soul were always just roaming. I always felt like something in me was missing, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. It wasn’t until I turned 38 and moved to the United States in 2013 that it hit me. I was living in Newport Beach, and one day, walking back from the gym, I stopped to look at the sun setting behind the Back Bay. As I looked at the horizon, I felt something that I had never felt before: I was home. America was home. For the first time in my life, I felt a sense of belonging. Flash forward to settling in Las Vegas; every time I see a beautiful sunset in our valley, I’m reminded of that warm feeling. This is where my heart belongs! Having a home is so important! Home is where we feel safe. Home is where we can feel at peace. Home is where we can be with our loved ones and celebrate with one another. In this wonderful “Home” issue, our partners share insights and ideas on how to make your home a very special place. Alan Schrimpf, owner of SVVC (Southern Vegas Valley Contracting), opens his home and shares how he designed his gorgeous backyard as an extension of his home. Get to know Joe DiRaffaele and his thoughts on the residential home market. David Daskal from ESG Gallery reveals his secrets on how he chooses his shop’s luxurious and unique tiles and mosaics that can turn your home into your own castle. Kristen Routh-Silberman highlights one of the top real estate luxury properties on the market. Enjoy reading–in your home or not–and I hope you will feel gratitude for yourself and our community as I do. There is really no place like home. From my heart to yours,

INNOVATIVE TRENDS TO A CLEANER AND HEALTHIER HOME

MELISA WYATT

Haven

Of course, having a healthy home is on everyone’s mind these days, and for a good reason. Every year, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery carefully reviews and curates a selection of innovative products in plumbing, lighting, and appliances for Trends & Influences. Working from market research and with industry insiders, they assess current trends. According to Nicole Levy, Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting marketing manager for the Southwest district, “In this year’s Trends and Influences, the Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery experts identified a trend we like to call ‘Healthy Haven’.” In 2022, the health and well-being of our home are on many people’s minds, especially indoor air quality (IAQ.) Plus, according to Ryan Donovan, senior category manager for indoor air quality at Ferguson, a seller of plumbing and HVAC products, CONTINUED >

systems in the future will become more sensitive. He was quoted in the Wall Street Journal as saying, “In 10 years, I do think it’s possible that the sensor will tell you there’s a flu virus.” Homeowners have never had to think about their homes’ health, especially the IAQ in the way they are now. And it goes beyond their homes. They want contractors to recommend the proper home healthy home and IAQ solution for the buildings where they work, shop, and where their children go to school. A healthy home and IAQ solution are an investment in peace of mind in themselves and their family’s well-being for years to come. Thankfully, there are many ways to create a cleaner, more hygienic home. Implementing innovative technologies like a hands-free faucet or light switch, clothes sanitizer or anti-bacterial exhaust fan, and healthy practices can help you clean faster, cook smarter and rest easier. With studies linking poor indoor air quality to serious health problems such as asthma and allergies, it is no wonder why people feel this way and put creating a healthy home at the top of their 2022 resolution list. There are many ways to create a cleaner and healthier home, from the simple to the complex. For instance, an easy and cost-effective way to reduce indoor pollution is by opening windows and doors for 5 minutes each hour. According to Donovan in a recent EatingWell article on humidifiers said, “Because today’s modern homes are so energy efficient, they allow for very little fresh air to get in or stale air to get out.” Each home is different. Humidifiers (and dehumidifiers depending on where you live and the house or building) and other IAQ solutions are starting to be part of the entire HVAC ecosystem. Therefore, he recommends “working with an HVAC professional who can measure the baseline of what is going on and provide data-driven solutions that address the problem areas using IAQ solutions.” For example, suppose you live in a dry climate. In that case, your HVAC-IAQ professional may recommend upgrading to a whole-home humidifier since it only requires yearly maintenance of filter and canister replacements. Keeping your humidity at the proper levels improves your indoor air quality has many proven benefits, including relieving nasal congestion, stopping the spread of colds and flu, CONTINUED >

preventing dry skin, and protecting flooring and furniture. Additionally, it improves hair and scalp health and prevents dry skin. Another way to enjoy the benefits of hydration is steam. Steam is known to help clear congested sinuses, great for chronic allergy sufferers. According to Levy, a steam shower can help improve circulation as well as encourage the body to relax, the perfect way to wind down before bedtime for a better night’s sleep.” Here are other products and tips curated by the Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting team in this year’s Trends & Influences to help create a healthier home environment: • Touchless faucets and bidet toilets reduce touchpoints to decrease the spread of germs. • A combination air-whirlpool tub allows you to relax, recover, and reinvigorate right in your bathroom. The textured, slip-resistant bottom helps prevent falls, while the acrylic construction is easy to clean. • Keep the air cleaner with a ceiling fan that not only keeps you cool and circulates the air but has ultraviolet technology, verified through independent laboratory testing to kill 99.99% of SARS-CoV-2 (causes COVID-19) and other airborne pathogens while safely neutralizing allergens, odors, and fumes. • A kitchen faucet with a built-in water dispenser ensures your water is safe to drink and tastes good as well. • Consider a steam oven, which allows you to effortlessly cook your food in one of the healthiest ways. • Get dishes cleaner with a dishwasher with customizable features, a high-capacity interior, and a Sani-Rinse option that eliminates 99.999% of food soil bacteria by adding a high-heat final rinse to sanitize dishes.

20

I NSP IR E D BY | HOM E + DE S I GN

• Keep the laundry room clean and fresh, beginning with the air. This lighted exhaust fan prevents mold, bacteria, and fungi growth on surfaces in your bathroom, laundry room, or another humidity-prone environment. • Maintain clean water right at the source with an under-sink filtration system. Effectively reduce contaminants including bacteria, virus, lead, mercury, and chlorine select pharmaceuticals in your family’s cold drinking water. • Care for your delicate without using harsh chemicals common in dry cleaning with an AirDresser Steam closet. Odor elimination technology gets out 99% of stubborn smells in fabrics caused by smoke, sweat, and food. In addition, the sanitary cycle reduces allergens, dry cleaning chemicals, and fine dust particles. Homeowners can significantly increase the comfort and safety of their home environment from many directions. Levy says, “When a house is a home, it’s a place where everyone feels safe, at ease, and comforted. So, while a house that’s free of pollutants and germs is close to impossible, it is also possible to significantly reduce harmful substances. Homeowners are adopting these innovative products are not adopting innovative products to keep dangerous microbes out; they are adopting them to create a space where they truly want to be.” Now is the time to pro-actively adopt healthier, cleaner habits. Just a few small changes can make a world of difference in the health and safety of your household for you and your loved ones.

Upon entering ESG Gallery, you immediately feel drawn to the space, which is alive with colors and textures, artful mosaics, and luxurious materials. It resembles an art installation with a multitude of unique tile, porcelain, and marble surface design samples, displayed much like paintings and sculptures in an art exhibition. Therefore, it is not surprising that an art collector like Owner David Daskal is most proud of the extensive and varied selection of products he offers. David, a soft-spoken Chicagoan, came into the surface design industry after a successful yet unfulfilling career in finance, which included an education in accounting and time on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. man had a hidden talent, however, a creative streak, one which is evidenced by the displays in the gallery. Leaving finance behind, David briefly took over his ailing father’s carpet business until its closure. But it was working for a mosaics company, where he learned about the ancient art form and developed a passion for the style and its origins. In 2008, he combined his financial acumen and business experience to start “Eclectic, Stone and Glass,” now known as ESG Gallery. In partnership with his wife, Sandra, the business has steadily grown, allowing for a showroom opening in 2015, to better service designers and homeowners, plus an expansion to their larger current location in 2019. Thankfully business has been exceedingly strong through the pandemic. David credits the construction boom and the reflective time we’ve recently all spent in our homes planning renovations for the unprecedented demand but adds that his mid-western values and outstanding team of employees greatly

contribute to his success. A success he generously shares by supporting the missions of local charities close to his heart, The Good Deed Project and The Tyler Robinson Foundation. David has an eye for composition and trends in his industry, thanks to the many relationships he’s cultivated with producers and vendors in Italy, Spain, and Peru, where the materials are sourced. As the sole, self-funded owner David has had the freedom to explore and invent. Most gratifying for David is the opportunity to work with different materials and collaborate with fabricators on new products and designs that he’s able to deliver directly to his clients, without the delays caused by the corporate bureaucracies of his competitors. Whether it is in that one-of-a-kind piece of lava composite with gold leaf streaks he designed to surround your fireplace hearth or in that raw split-faced limestone with a plateau effect he developed to elevate your outdoor porch, you’ll find David’s ingenuity and creativity in all of his product offerings.

MODERN INDOOROUTDOOR LIVING IN SOUTHERN NEVADA Alan Schrimpf and Southern Vegas Valley Contracting lead the way in architectural and landscaping design concepts ARTICLE BY IZZY HARING PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIAN SAPIENZA

Warm transitional seasons and mild winters have made Las Vegas the center of indoor-outdoor living. An architectural and landscaping design concept, indoor-outdoor living seamlessly blurs the boundaries between the inside and outside of the home. “The demand for indoor-outdoor living skyrocketed during the pandemic as homeowners needed to increase their living space to accommodate working, learning, and entertaining at home. Backyards of all sizes had to function as multi-functional extensions of the home,” said Alan Schrimpf, owner of Southern Vegas Valley Contracting (SVVC). What began as a temporary need has become a mainstay in Las Vegas residential design. Helping clients experience this way of living is Schrimpf. With more than 35 years of experience in the construction industry, Schrimpf is renowned in Southern Nevada for reinventing residences and transforming the way Las Vegans live. Founded 20 years ago, SVVC is a full-service remodel and contracting company offering unparalleled indooroutdoor design, pools, construction, and interior design. A perfect example of the fusion between indoor-outdoor living is Schrimpf’s own home in Summerlin. “From personal experience, I’ve found that builders offer a limited number of structural and finish options. Given these limited selections and most homeowners’ desire to create their vision, we specialize in customizing new builder homes following the close of escrow. Our home is a solid example of transforming a standard builder home into a semi-custom residence,” said Schrimpf. Schrimpf invited us to visit his home and experience how SVVC impeccably melds the comforts of the indoors with the experience of being outdoors. Among other things, Schrimpf’s home features a custom backyard complete with large gathering areas, a misting system, kitchen, pool, spa, fire table, shower, and soaking tub. With family and friends taking center stage in Schrimpf’s life, being able to comfortably gather, cook and dine year-round was an integral part of his design process. “When creating indoor-outdoor spaces, I personally work with each client, always keeping their needs and budget in mind, to design and implement aesthetically pleasing, functional spaces. Some clients want many indoor-outdoor components. Others, just a few. Whatever their vision and budget designate, we can accomplish,” said Schrimpf. Entering Schrimpf’s home, one is immediately taken by the beautiful floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors leading into the backyard. Schrimpf continued the same 2-foot by 4-foot pale gray format tile used from the entry courtyard, through the interior, and outside the backyard to create a sense of continuous indoor-outdoor space. A pergola cover and integrated outdoor kitchen features stainless-steel appliances that follow the interior kitchen’s footprint. This makes transporting dishes, drinks, and food effortless. grill, and smoker are accompanied by a sink, refrigerator, built-in storage, and a pull-out warming drawer. A large dining table seats up to 12, and a sectional sits in front of a media wall and fireplace. Surrounded by slate-gray porcelain pavers, the backyard centerpiece is a negative edge pool and spa creating the calming visual effect of endless water. In another section of the yard, a sunken seating area featuring indirect lighting and views of the mountains includes a raised fire table. “When it comes to creating outdoor spaces, every

detail matters. Something as simple as the deep stone table edge surrounding the fire table was key. Expanding the edge by 2-inches provides an alfresco dining place for guests to place plates and drinks,” said Schrimpf. Perhaps the biggest wow-factor is the private outdoor bathing area. Discreetly hidden by a privacy enclosure and guarded by a security system is a retreat featuring an outdoor shower, free-standing soaking tub, and seating area located off the master bathroom. “Outdoor showers are gaining in

popularity and are relatively affordable. Bringing more of the outside into master bathrooms is definitely a valuable design consideration,” explained Schrimpf. Encompassing the yard are 200 tiny, strategically placed misting heads. “Las Vegas offers over 300 sunny days a year, and your backyard can be an extension of your home yearround. Today’s misting systems are effective, affordable, water-smart, and blend in with your yard to create a micro-environment. Turned on early in the morning, the right misting system will cool your outdoor spaces by up to 15 degrees, allowing you to enjoy your yard even in July,” said Schrimpf. Upon request, SVVC also offers coordinating indoor-outdoor decorating services. “We can work with each client to bring their interior décor outside. Though not mandatory, we’ve found creating a consistent connection between the two areas yields amazing results,” explained Schrimpf. In his home, Schrimpf chose high-performance, lightweight aluminum furniture covered in Sunbrella fabrics that coordinate with the home’s interior design. “Each piece of furniture in our yard is easily interchangeable depending on our needs,” explained Schrimpf. “All seating, lounge, and dining furniture can be moved and reprogramed to accommodate our needs.” Hiring a highly reputable design and contracting firm is crucial to increasing one’s personal and financial investment in their home. Schrimpf and SVVC offer exceptional service, design, and craftsmanship based on anyone’s needs and budget.

Presenting: The Wynn Estate THERE’S NOTHING IN THE WORLD LIKE LAS VEGAS— AND THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN LAS VEGAS LIKE THE WYNN ESTATE

ARTICLE BY KRISTEN ROUTH-SILBERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN MARTORANO PHOTOGRAPHY

While The Wynn Estate may look like it resides in Bel Air, this timeless estate is actually located in Country Club Hills on the private golf club TPC at Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nevada. The exquisite property is a neoclassical glory, constructed with meticulous attention to detail. The Wynn Estate took more than a year to remodel and rebuild. The ceilings, walls, staircase, fixtures, chandeliers, fabrics, lighting, and electronics were hand-selected and crafted to complement the design. Built to the most exacting standards and exemplifying graceful and symmetrical design, this singular estate comprises a main residence of 15,000+ square feet with six-bedroom suites and 11 bathrooms, as well as two private offices, a screening room, an art room, and a four-car garage.

These are complemented by romantic, classical gardens and expansive lawns that work in tandem with the estate’s European design to evoke a timeless, ethereal atmosphere. A world away, yet just 20 minutes from the world-famous Las Vegas Strip. Grand Estate. Grandeur in the Details. Wonder strikes the minute your guests enter the long travertine and limestone paved drive that sits behind the bronze security gates of the front entrance. Flanked by Bradford Pear and Crepe Myrtle trees combined with symmetrical rose gardens, guests receive a magical opportunity to take in the details of the grandeur and elegance of this estate. A limestone entryway leads to the warmth within The Wynn Estate. Substantial doors open to reveal the grand foyer. Its marble floors,

breathtaking staircase, and sweeping 30-foot ceilings form a backdrop for the owner’s lovingly placed intricate details throughout the home. Each Venetian plaster wall was custom-designed and painstakingly crafted. Their detail comes to life throughout the home. From the ceilings hang custom-designed, stunning chandeliers and gorgeous sconces throughout the estate. In fact, each lighting fixture was custom-designed and is one-of-a-kind. Past the grand foyer, guests arrive at your formal living room in front of an ethereal fountain that is flanked by intricate one-of-a-kind custom ceilings and electronic draperies in lavish fabrics. The ideal venue for welcoming guests with their aperitif of choice, the salon has a gorgeous silk carpet, while the glorious window perfectly frames the stunning mountain views. CONTINUED >

Among the most sublime rooms in the home is the formal dining room, which exudes warmth - without sacrificing formality. Seating for up to 30 allows for intimate or extravagant meals, surrounded by Mohair fabric walls, beautiful flooring, and recessed lighting. An adjacent butler’s pantry and breakfast room feature ample solid walnut cabinets and additional wine chillers. There are many other stunning rooms to enjoy, including the state-of-the-art screening room with movie screen, luxurious seating, and walnut walls. Bon Appétit Even chefs from Le Cordon Bleu® would be thrilled to show off their skills in this breathtaking yet functional kitchen. Custom walnut wood cabinetry, stone countertops, and the mosaic tile backsplash are second only to the utmost in high-end appliances: a custom double Viking range; Viking double ovens and double warming drawers; Sub-Zero wine chillers, refrigerator, freezer, and Viking dishwashers. The room’s marble floors, walnut custom cabinetry, and spectacular garden windows overlooking the pool give it instant warmth. Crème de la Crème Master Retreat The estate is embellished with breathtaking custom adornments throughout, but the master suite is the crème de la crème. From your initial entry through the rotunda entrance, the spacious master bedroom is both impressive and warm. Inspired by the Wynn Hotel, the beautiful paned windows add grandeur, while the magnificent custom chandelier is illuminated from above. A private terrasse offers a peaceful respite. The bedroom suite features silk paneled walls, electronically-controlled draperies, and a ceiling that soars over the large living space. The suite also features a lovely sitting space and terrace overlooking the gardens. It’s ideal for a private getaway.

There are two impressive spa bathrooms and walk-in closets: “Her” prized room was modeled after boutiques on Rue Cambon in Paris. The white-lacquered storage cases will beautifully showcase your finest dresses and more. “His” closet is handsomely appointed and is highlighted by custom finishes. Five guest suites - each with a private spa bath and terraces - help guests feel at home, as well as being swept away on a luxurious vacation. The guest suites are inspirational and have incredible finishes, including Tuscan Suede marble baths, silk walls, and white piano-lacquered finished walk-in closets. Soiree Like any great home, The Wynn Estate is at its best when filled with people, and the house easily

hosts impressive gatherings. Whether welcoming friends to an intimate screening in your private home theater or entertaining hundreds of guests during a charity fundraiser on your sweeping verandas, The Wynn Estate has been conceived to take entertainment to a whole new level. Guests will also enjoy the formality and privacy of powder rooms furnished with THG fixtures, each designed to create a unique experience. The luxurious 1.5-acre paradise was designed with meticulous positioning and precision. Venturing beyond the picturesque residence, guests find themselves in formal gardens that flow into expansive lawns, private walkways, and rose gardens. Simply put, The Wynn Estate in The Enclave at Country Club Hills creates a new level of refined and luxurious living.

Longtime Local Realtor Talks Residential Real Estate

Q&A with Joe D. ARTICLE BY PAIGE CANDEE

42

O UR TOWN | R EAL ESTATE

“Our clients tend to be people who are looking for an expert who can handle all the details of their real estate transaction so they can focus on the other aspects of their lives.”

With more than a quarter-century of Las Vegas Valley realty experience, Red Rock City Lifestyle asked local residential realtor about the business, the market, and his advice on navigating it all.

that provide services to children in need in our community, including Serving Our Kids Foundation, Henderson Chamber of Commerce Foundation, and High School Leadership.

JOE DIRAFFAELE “JOE D.” CEO DiRaffaele Group at eXp Realty Years in business in the valley: 27 Company motto: Clients First

4) WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO PURCHASE A HOME IN THIS MARKET? This is a seller’s market, so as a buyer, you must be prepared to remove as many hurdles in your offer as possible so that you stand out among the many offers the seller will likely receive. Make fast decisions. This is not the “I want to sleep on it and decide tomorrow” market. Finally, hire an agent with great relationships in the industry; sometimes, the little things get an offer accepted.

1) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS? Helping clients with the buying and selling aspects of their real estate needs. 2) WHAT IS YOUR NICHE IN THE REALTY WORLD? Being known as the professional’s professional. Our clients tend to be people who are looking for an expert who can handle all the details of their real estate transaction so they can focus on the other aspects of their lives. 3) WHAT WOULD NEW CLIENTS BE MOST INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT WHAT IT’S LIKE TO WORK WITH YOU? Professionally, I have well over 3,000 properties sold, one client at a time. Personally, I am very involved in the philanthropic aspects of our community, sitting on multiple boards for charities

5) WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO SOMEONE LOOKING TO SELL THEIR HOME IN THIS MARKET? Even though this is a seller’s market, the fundamentals are still important. Have the home in good showing condition, and a good agent can help you stage your home so it looks welcoming to a buyer. There is also no need to overspend on prepping a home to go on the market. It’s about spending a nickel on things that will get you a dime in return. This way, you are not wasting money on things that don’t generate a return over their cost.

Daphne Oz: Beautiful Evenings at Home Emmy-winning TV Host & NY Times Bestselling Author Shares her Dinner Hosting Favorites

New York Times bestselling author Daphne Oz talks about her newest book, “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss Food to Celebrate Eating Clean,” which launches in April. We sat down with Daphne Oz to learn more about her journey to home entertainment.

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ: I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now

my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant

Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.

Welcome to the Castle in historic Guard Gated Rancho Circle. The original home built in 1945 went through a dramatic transformation in the 1970’s by casino owner Don Pettit whom founded and operated the Coin Castle Casino on Fremont Street from 1970 - 1977. Don, an artist whom loved to paint was fascinated with medieval architecture designed and oversaw every detail of this home’s development. Over the years other owners have updated aspects of the property, but they have kept the theme of Don’s vision. Sitting on over 1 acre and boasting 6,121sqft of living, this is truly one of Las Vegas’ one of a kind gems . If you want unique and a piece of Vegas history this is worth a look.
