Holiday cheer to you and yours! I can’t believe that we are already in December! Last month, we celebrated Red Rock City Lifestyle’s 2nd Anniversary, and this month marks one year since I took over the publication! It has been so much fun discovering local businesses, learning more about the stories behind them, and bringing you their stories. I absolutely love this community and am in awe of all the wonderful people and local businesses that we have. After a few months into my role as the publisher, I realized that this magazine had been a gift from God. I now have a powerful tool that can help me spread love and positivity throughout our community, be it by the stories we bring or the events we create to bring the community together and build a powerful network, all while raising funds and awareness for non-profit organizations such as Miracle Flights, B.E. A S.H.E.R.O. Foundation, The Smith Center for Performing Arts, Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada, Answer 4 Cancer, Angels of Las Vegas, and others. This month we bring you stories about a winter getaway destination for the whole family, the best place to leave your pet in a loving environment while you are away, charitable giving and leadership skills shared by some of the leading business owners in the valley, and more. Adam’s Place Adds Two Locations Las Vegas-based nonprofit, Adam’s Place, a grief center for children and families, recently opened two new locations in the valley in order to better serve the community. The new locations were made possible through the generosity of partners, Summerlin Hospital and Medical Center and The Richard Harris Law Firm. Adam’s Place offers community-based training, in addition to providing their Camp Cope curriculum to other organizations, to support children, teens, and families coping with loss and grief.

The Howard Hughes Corporation Breaks Ground On New Class-A Office Buildings The Howard Hughes Corporation recently broke ground on a new Class-A office complex in Summerlin South’s Village of South Square. The project will include two three-story buildings on an 8.8-acre site. The innovative space will total 147,00 square feet and the two buildings will be connected by a first-floor lobby. The buildings will offer flexibility for both large and small users, with suites ranging in size from just over 5,000 square feet to more than 25,000 square feet.

Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada Raises More Than $67,000 Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada’s third annual “Swing Fore Safe Homes” charity golf tournament and virtual silent auction raised $67,000 recently. The funds will enable the nonprofit to provide critical repairs to approximately seven homes at no cost to low-income homeowners, including seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. The event was held at Reflection Bay Golf Club, and nearly 130 golfers participated.

Crew Las Vegas Donates to Women Veterans of Nevada Commercial Real Estate Women of Las Vegas presented a check for more than $9,000 to Women Veterans of Nevada. The funds were raised through the organization’s annual Kentucky Derby-themed event, Run for the Roses, held earlier this year at Las Vegas Country Club. The organization, which supports the advancement of women in commercial real estate through education, leadership, partnership, and networking, honors a different charity each year through this annual event.

Collective Giving Group Seeks to Donate $100,000 to Local Nonprofit Impact Las Vegas, a collective giving group, is celebrating its 10th anniversary by selecting one local nonprofit on which to bestow a $100,000 grant. The group, founded in 2013, has collectively given nearly $400,000 to local charities since they were founded. Each member of Impact Las Vegas gives $1,000 and votes on grant submissions. If you are looking for a way to experience Yosemite without sleeping on the ground (that is, if you were even able to get a camping reservation), a sophisticated hillside resort is waiting for you. Yosemite Rush Creek Lodge & Spa is a little slice of heaven, especially for families traveling with kids. I had the privilege of staying at the tucked-away resort surrounded by sequoias and natural beauty just outside the Highway 120 West entrance to Yosemite National Park. There was something for everyone in my family of five – restaurant and tavern, zip lines, spa, arts and crafts, game room, s’mores pits, pool, jacuzzi, fitness classes, and excursions. And, of course, it was only a short drive to the Giant Sequoias and Yosemite Valley. The Lodge is open all year round and is quickly becoming one of the premier destinations for mountain weddings. The warmer months offer barbeque celebrations by the pool and outdoor activities galore. While the cooler months see snowshoeing, hot tubing, and more. Nestled beneath towering sequoia trees, Yosemite Rush Creek Lodge & Spa welcomed us to its authentic, yet well-appointed mountain retreat situated on 20 forested acres along the outskirts of Yosemite National Park. With the resort’s lineup of activities, we couldn’t wait to put down our phones and unplug, savoring the magnificent natural beauty of the area and enjoying Mother Nature’s playground. After checking in, we stepped into the General Store to find a trail mix bar with more than a dozen offerings to take back to our room and keep us fueled on our nature walks and hikes. Walking out towards the pool, the Guest Lodge and the Main Lodge flank on either side while a fire pit and an outdoor game area punctuate the ends. The Main Lodge houses the restaurant and tavern, as well as a guest lounge with plush leather chairs and sofas, fireplaces, and card/board game tables where we could kick back and unwind after a day of explorations. There is an indoor game room for children to climb a treehouse-inspired

wall and for teens to play air hockey or billiards. An outdoor terrace beckons guests to play a game of shuffleboard while enjoying the crisp mountain air. The cherry on this mountaintop was the newly renovated indoor-outdoor spa which gave us a chance to truly experience the magnitude and breathtaking beauty of the extraordinary setting. The spa was reimagination from the staff’s personal experiences with Yosemite’s landscape and enchantment. The Rush Creek Spa specifically aims to mimic the extraordinary moments an adventurer would experience while visiting Yosemite – such as magnificent waterfalls, granite formations, glaciers, river rocks smoothed by rushing waters, natural hot springs, and fragrant wildflowers. The spa’s covered and heated outdoor lounge is anchored by a soothing granite

waterfall mineral hot tub where guests can watch the snow fall against the mountains in the background. In contrast, a hanging day bed and warm river rock beds, as well as additional lounge chairs, offer plenty of places to relax before or after receiving treatment. Inside the spa, we found unique spaces, from an aromatherapy steam room and Himalayan salt block sauna designed to capture the feel of hiking the trails on a hot summer day to the cool mist room and warm waterfall coves designed to mimic a roaring waterfall spraying mist against your skin. While many family trips are spent running around keeping children entertained, we extremely appreciated the family-friendly spa experience as it opens to families daily from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. so that everyone may enjoy the amenities together before it returns to adults only.

Beyond the spa, there’s no shortage of activities to surprise and delight guests of all ages. From a one-of-a-kind playground to kids’ zip lines (although kids weren’t the only ones acting like children on these!), a 60-foot embankment slide, as well as an assortment of lawn games including bocce ball, horseshoes, life-size checkers, and corn hole. Additional activities perfect for the cooler seasons include nature crafts, paint parties, glass blowing, and wilderness talks discussing the area. Nightly s’mores around the fire are the perfect sweet ending to an adventure-filled day. Still, for those looking for more, the recreation team is happy to assist with evening stargazing, snowshoeing, or other adventures. The tavern also hosts late-night entertainment, including theme parties and karaoke. When it’s time for bed, Rush Creek Lodge offers a range of accommodations,

including Lodge Rooms, Lodge Suites, Hillside Villas, and One-Bedroom Villas. Lodge Rooms are ideal for families of up to four, and each offers private decks perfect for enjoying a cup of coffee while overlooking the forest or savoring the last beams of light at sunset. Slightly larger, the Lodge Suites offer a private bedroom and separate living room. The One-Bedroom Villas offer a more private experience and are sprinkled throughout the property, with accommodations for up to four guests. For larger parties of up to six guests, a Hillside Villa offers an entry foyer, a master bedroom that includes a king bed, a large sitting area with a queen sofa bed and cast-iron gas fireplace, a second bedroom with either a second king bed or two twin beds, a private bathroom with divided vanity and shower areas, and an expansive private deck with forest and sunset views. One thing was for sure — nobody from my family was ready to leave when our time was up at the hillside woodland of Rush Creek Lodge. I can tell you that we will be back for sure to have another relaxed, sophisticated experience. See you there!

This December, The Nevada Ballet Theatre’s dazzling production of The Nutcracker returns to The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. By far one of Las Vegas’ favorite holiday traditions, this year’s performance of The Nutcracker by The Nevada Ballet Theatre is sure to fill your holiday season with sparkling wonder and amazement. According to German folklore, nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to bring luck to the family and protect the home. Most commonly resembling a toy soldier, Christmas nutcracker dolls represent good luck while also frightening away malevolent spirits. In the story of The Nutcracker, the lead female role is played by Clara, the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum. Clara is delighted by the wooden Nutcracker doll she receives from her Godfather on Christmas Eve. Yet once night falls, the Nutcracker

comes to life, and Clara finds herself on a magical adventure to save the Nutcracker from the evil Mouse King. In 2012, The Nevada Ballet Theatre presented a new and original production of The Nutcracker at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Choreographed by James Canfield, the new production featured new sets and a full orchestra. Whimsical costumes for The Nevada Ballet Theatre’s production of The Nutcracker were designed by the award-winning costume designer Sandra Woodall and created at the legendary Parsons School of Design in New York. “The Nutcracker is The Nevada Ballet Theatre’s largest production of the year. Choreographed by James Canfield, The Nutcracker was specifically built for the Reynolds Hall stage at The Smith Center,” said Roy Kaiser, Artistic Director for The Nevada Ballet Theatre. TIPS As a country, we have been suffering many losses and emotional ups and downs. During the holiday season, we experience many emotions, from joy and happiness to anxiety and depression. The terms often used during this time of year when depression and anxiety are experienced are the “holiday blues,” “holiday depression,” or “winter blues.” Holiday blues are differentiated from other mental health conditions because: • It is short-term — it may begin around November and is over after the new year • The symptoms are milder than Major Depressive Disorders or Seasonal Affective Disorder • It is not a clinical diagnosis Holiday blues may include feelings of sadness, being overwhelmed, loneliness, grief, guilt, worthlessness, and/or painful reflection. Behaviors may include isolation, change in appetite, poor concentration, increased sleep, fatigue, lack of interest in things, and irritability. People with a current mental illness may have exacerbated symptoms during this time.

If you are experiencing some of these symptoms when thinking about the holidays, here are a few tips to help you get through:

1: Stay engaged with people that make you happy. If you do not have family or friends, find people in clubs, organizations, or meetups around things that you like. Connecting with others will help you feel uplifted. 2: Stay active. Action or activity in the form of exercise or movement is a natural antidepressant. Turn on your favorite music and get moving! 3: Be thankful. Show gratitude through your words; start a gratitude journal. It can look and be anything you want it to be, from pictures, images, drawings, or a list of everything you are thankful for. 4: Love yourself. When you are in love with someone, you make sure that they are happy and their needs are met; you shower them with gifts and affection. Do this for yourself. Ask yourself, how have I shown my love for myself today? 5: Sleep well. Sleep around eight hours a night. Make sure that your environment is conducive to sleep. The bed is comfy, the temperature in the room is right, and you have started to calm your body down with some relaxation techniques.

6: Alcohol is a depressant. If you drink and you are depressed, it will make it worse. Watch your mood and behavior and make responsible decisions around alcohol. 7: If nothing else, maximize whatever you do that makes you happy during hard times.

Now, if the holidays are your jam, share your joy and happiness with others. Check in with your co-workers, neighbors, loved ones, or anyone else that you meet, and maybe ask what the holidays mean to them. If possible, offer a hug, smile, or a dinner invitation. Be sure to pay attention to your emotions as well because you can inadvertently put too much on your plate. Avoid overwhelming yourself and welcome realistic expectations to avoid holiday stress. It is okay to say no to some obiligations (even if you have already committed) and to say yes to joy and happiness. If the holiday season passes and you are still feeling emotional into the new year, it may be more than holiday blues. It might be time to reach out to your healthcare provider and discuss how you feel. Remember, you are not alone, and you can get better.

LOCAL ATTORNEY SETS THE PACE BY PUSHING HIS LIMITS AND INSPIRING OTHERS

When attorney Michael Kling moved to Las Vegas in 1996, he and his wife, Ann, weren’t sure what to expect or how long they’d stay. Flash forward nearly 30 years, and home certainly means Nevada to the Kling family. They found a community in Las Vegas that has supported them and provided opportunities, a gift in itself--a gift that the Kling family works to repay through philanthropic efforts. Through his years in the valley, Kling has built a successful law practice and has embedded himself in the community that so readily supports him. “We are truly grateful for the opportunities we have had here and are proud to be a part of this city, so giving back comes naturally,” said Kling. One of the first groups with which he became involved was the Las Vegas Founders LV, a group of Las Vegas business leaders committed to bringing PGA events to the city. The Founders raised funds for a number of local charities and bolstered community support for junior golf opportunities throughout the valley. About 15 years ago, after resuming road cycling, Kling found his cadence as a Huntsman Cancer Foundation Hometown Hero. Originally a means to gain entry into the challenging

LoToJa bike race, the partnership quickly grew. “After my first-year racing LoToJa, Hometown Heroes became more than just an event entry; it became a way for me to ride for a cause,” explained Kling. LoToJa is a grueling single-day, 203-mile race through Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming, spanning three mountain ranges. It partners with Hometown Heroes to support cancer research at Huntsman Cancer Foundation. “I decided to ask for support from family, friends, and clients, claiming that if they donated the dollars, I would ride the miles,” said Kling. “Over the years, I have raised over $250,000 for cancer research.” LoToJa matches his fundraising, making the effect of Kling’s efforts over time an impressive half-million dollars. “If Huntsman Cancer Foundation can use the funds to develop a cure, or even lessen the impact of cancer, it will be life-changing,” stated Kling. Capped at 1,500 participants, LoToJa isn’t for the faint at heart, but Kling has taken on the challenge 14 times so far. “LoToJa is a sufferfest; it requires pushing all your limits to finish, but it doesn’t compare to what family members and friends with

cancer have faced,” said Kling. “Those who donate their money in support of my fundraising seem to understand the hope that if cyclists can complete this event, the really hard work of curing cancer can also be accomplished.” Putting in the effort to benefit others is something Kling continues during the holiday season when his family participates in Desert Spring United Methodist Church’s “A Different Kind of Christmas.” “Each year, Desert Spring partners with a philanthropy or mission project and asks the congregation to give the gift of supporting that cause over one or more gifts of ‘stuff,’” explained Kling. “Our family enjoys participating in this giving opportunity, and it resonates especially well with our children. We recognize how lucky we have been, in business, with health matters, and in life opportunities in general.” Following in his footsteps, Kling’s children are finding their own ways to give back to the community.

“One of my greatest inspirations has been watching my children find ways to give back that are meaningful to them,” said Kling. “In helping them understand the importance of philanthropy, I like to believe we are creating a legacy of giving.” After volunteering for myriad Las Vegas organizations while growing up, Kling’s eldest daughter chose to join a philanthropic-focused sorority that annually raises more than $100,000 for their local women’s shelter. Not to be outdone, his youngest daughter joined National Charity League when she was in 8th grade and has volunteered hundreds of hours across Southern Nevada for organizations like Make a Wish Foundation, Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army, Ronald McDonald House, Adam’s Place, and more. “Getting to know the needs of your community and learning to help in ways that matter is both motivating and fulfilling,” said Kling. “Everyone has the capacity to do something, and every effort will truly help make the world a better place.”

With a variety of cheeses, berries, nuts and olives, this tasty display makes the perfect statement board. For an added touch, use a cookie cutter to add a cheese star to the top.

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE CAKE If you don’t have time to bake a cake but want your store-bought cake to look special, add berries and a holiday topper to give it that special flair. Fresh raspberries adorn the top of this cake, and to add cascading fresh berries down the side, toothpicks can be used to hold them in place. Not only is it simple and quick to do, but it turns into the perfect entertaining table centerpiece.

The leadership of others begins with the leadership of self. That’s one of the first lessons that Henderson students learn at the High School Leadership retreat each fall. Compassion for yourself lends itself to compassion for others. And according to one of the program’s mentors, Joe DiRaffaele, it’s a concept that these promising student leaders grasp quickly and wholeheartedly—and the effects are immediate. Over the course of this three-day retreat, students from diverse backgrounds and different social circles break down barriers. Joe explains, “Within one day, all of those walls disappear, and they realize: We’re all the same. We all have similar challenges. How can I make your life better? And, thereby, people turn around and automatically do the same.” Their energy and open-mindedness are contagious to Joe, as well. He considers it one of the best weekends of his year. The lessons that High School Leadership students learn are the very same ones Joe DiRaffaele learned throughout the course of his decades-long career as a nationally recognized real estate agent in Las Vegas. He grew up contributing to community projects, but the relationship between leadership and community involvement became clear to him once he began his professional career. His mentors, Tim Woods and Bill Mitchell, both stressed to him the importance of making a difference

in the community. Doing so was essential to the success of their own businesses, and, according to DiRaffaele, they passed along an ethos centered around “[the] concept of the ‘give economy,’ meaning, the more you contribute, the more you’re going to get back. And that doesn’t always mean monetarily, but it just means your life will be richer and fuller. And any challenges you have in your own business or your own personal life will pale in comparison because you have been giving and giving and giving. Things come back, and you benefit that much more.” His level of community involvement changed when his second child, his daughter Emily, was born 22 years ago. He felt overwhelmed with gratitude for his growing family and professional life, especially in light of the struggles that many other families in his community faced. He decided he needed to “pay it back,” but he also wanted to make sure to stay humble and grounded. And now, decades later, he’s a leader, board member, and amongst several local organizations, including High School Leadership, GEMS (Girls Empowerment Middle School), and Los Vaqueros. All of these organizations focus on helping kids and their families. As a parent, their missions touched his heart deeply. “Throughout my giving career, that has always been the ‘juice,’” he explains. “What moves the needle for me is making a difference in a child’s life. Often, the child doesn’t get to choose their challenges;

Once you identify that, start talking to people you know. Call your local Chamber of Commerce. Talk to your local church and find out what

organizations they support. DiRaffaele elaborates, “You don’t have to dive into the deep end right away but get involved and start putting your toe in the water to see what’s a good fit. Because once that aligns, it’s super easy from there to continue coming back and making a difference.” Leading from within—that’s one of the tenets of the High School Leadership program, and it’s something Joe DiRaffaele lives by.

If you plan to travel this holiday season but can’t take your dog along, Doggie District Premier Pet Resort can provide a fun-filled getaway for your fur baby. With over 10,000 square feet of outdoor space, climate-controlled suites, and indoor play yards, your dog will be kept busy and engaged according to its needs. But they will enjoy one-on-one playtimes with the staff for a small additional charge for non-social boarding. Dogs that show signs of, or have a history of, aggressive behavior such as biting, snapping, or lunging are not accepted. Relaxing music is played 24/7 throughout the facility. To help your pet feel safe and comfy, you can bring their own bedding, favorite squeaky toy, or lovey. And to avoid tummy problems, bring their own food and any medications. For a $1 fee per dosage, staff will administer oral or topical medications. Every dog receives a comprehensive wellness check during their stay, with their every need carefully tended to by the highly trained and experienced team of pet lovers. One less thing to worry about this busy holiday season or anytime during the year!

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
