LIFESTYLE LETTER
Gratitude
November 2022 PUBLISHER
Camilla Dorand | camilla.dorand@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Paige Candee | paige.candee@citylifestyle.com
Gratitude is the ultimate feeling! We can all learn how to cultivate it. Life happens no matter how much we might try to control it. God laughs every time we make plans, which means that many times things don’t go as planned. However, I truly believe life will always give us what we need to evolve. We might not always like it at the moment, but as time goes by and things unfold, we look back and understand that whatever happened was actually for the best, and we came out stronger on the other side. There are a few things that I have learned that I would love to share with you. When you learn to live in the present moment, it’s easier to feel grateful for what you have, the people around you, and who you are. When you accept situations and people as they are, instead of wishing they were different, it’s easier to feel gratitude for them because there is no judgment — only appreciation. On November 1st, we celebrate the magazine’s second anniversary, and I feel so grateful for the opportunity to every month connect to you, not only by bringing you a little bit of who I am but also because I can bring you inspirational stories like the ones we have in this Thankful issue. This month you will read about being grateful for water in our valley, thankful artists, charitable donations and tax benefits, a Veteran’s business, and other business leaders giving back — so much to be thankful for! As we enter the Holiday season, I encourage you to cultivate a feeling of gratitude. Recognize three different things/people/situations every day that you can be grateful for. Be consistent. Write them down. Notice how with time, your life becomes filled with more joy. Remember to follow us on social media and support the local businesses in our magazine. From my heart to yours,

Lower energy costs | Increased ITC tax credit now 30% of project cost Beat inflation - no increase in electricity cost for life No more worry about peak time surcharges “Solar was something that we were not too interested in until we saw the long term savings, which was $60,000 plus over the next 20 years. I never thought about the fact that we can lock in our future rates at todays cost by going this route. Owning our power source at that point just made sense. Bell did a fantastic job explaining the pros and cons and we def initely made the right decision for our family. The installation and conversion process was super simple and they really took pride in the f inished product. I highly recommend any homeowner exploring this as an option.” -Kimberly I.

Walking into the office of John LaBarge, the owner and founder of JP’s Junk Removal in North Las Vegas, you are immediately greeted by a very friendly face. “He’s just a lover. He loves everyone. Me, kids, other dogs,” said LaBarge, who is describing “Reaper,” his two and half-year-old Belgian Malinois, a support dog that’s been with him for over a year. Reaper helps LaBarge cope with post-traumatic stress disorder [or PTSD] stemming from his years in the military and law enforcement. “There was obviously a lot of trauma, so having Reaper with me 24/7 is necessary,” said LaBarge. “He calms me down a lot. My stress and anxiety go up without him.” LaBarge served in the US Army from 1995 to 2005, both domestically and overseas. He said while there were some very difficult times he went through on the frontline, there were also positive and life-changing experiences. One example was when he was part of a small number of US troops sent to Latvia and its surrounding countries in the mid-1990s to help train the local military. LaBarge said his contention helped lay the groundwork needed for these Eastern European nations to join NATO a few years later. “Going to Latvia and the impact it had on that country and the people there was just amazing,” said LaBarge. “A buddy of mine who was stationed in Afghanistan recently told me that he felt everything he did was just flushed down the toilet because of what happened with the US pullout. But he said at least what I got to do in Latvia had a positive impact on a global scale. It’s a good feeling.” After serving in the military, LaBarge went back to his home state of Michigan and served two years with the local sheriff’s department. Upon leaving that position, he spent some time living in different places around the country before ending up in Portland, Oregon where he started his business, “JP’s Junk Removal,” in 2010.

“There are people who used what happened to them in life as an excuse to fail. I used it as a reason to succeed." —John LaBarge
LaBarge said work was good in the Pacific Northwest for a while, but the increasing rules and regulations in that state made it harder over time to run his business. And working in the rain six months out of the year also got old. So, he decided to relocate to Las Vegas about five years ago and said it’s been one of the best moves, professionally and personally. “This city is really ideal for what we do and our business. In a way, our work is recession-proof. Whether the economy is good or bad, we do well and stay busy.” Since moving to the valley, LaBarge said the company has nearly tripled in business. Today he employs about ten people with three trucks in operation, with three more coming by the end of the year. But as with any business, the day-to-day grind of running a company can take a toll, and it can be especially taxing for someone

like LaBarge, who’s already battling PTSD. But this 47-year-old husband and father said he wouldn’t change anything from his past because it made him who he is today. “There are people who used what happened to them in life as an excuse to fail. I used it as a reason to succeed,” said LaBarge. “And I believe the reason we got to where we are was because of the level of professionalism and service that we provide. The best compliment that we have gotten was when customers thought we were a franchise. And it’s because we operate like one." JP’s Junk Removal offers a variety of services from furniture and appliance removals to clean-outs and power washing. And LaBarge and his team work with clients in neighborhoods all over Southern Nevada, including active-duty military members and veterans.
“I definitely reached out to them, and many of them have contacted us because they want to work with a veteran-owned business. It means something to them, and I am really proud of what we do.” LaBarge also credits his family, including his support dogs, for always being there for him. Before Reaper, LaBarge had a German Shepherd who was put down after she was hit by a car. Reaper is the latest addition to the family, which includes LaBarge's four older children, ages 27, 25, 14, and 12. But soon, Reaper will no longer be the “baby” of the bunch. LaBarge and his wife (whom he met after moving to Las Vegas and whom he describes as an incredible stepmother to his four older children) are expecting a little one this November, fitting with Veteran’s Day approaching. “We are having a little girl, and we couldn’t be more thankful.”

Thankful Local Busines s Leaders’ Community Service
ARTICLE BY MELISSA GREENFIELD For many, one of the greatest achievements in life is when they are able to share their successes by giving back to the community in ways that are both impactful for recipients and meaningful to the person giving. Their reasons for giving back are as vast and varied as the causes they support; some feel indebted for the support they themselves, or their families, have previously received, while others have simply felt called to lift up those who have helped them in their success, but they all want to pay it forward to the community in which they live and work, the community in which many of them grew up, Las Vegas.

Bell Solar trek in Nepal
Jeff Iverson & Breann McCulloch
BELL SOLAR & E LE CT RICAL SYST E MS As Chief Strategy Officer of Bell Solar and Electrical Systems, Jeff Iverson finds satisfaction in helping people take control of their electricity costs and adding value to their homes and lives, but Iverson doesn’t stop there. In addition to his “day job,” Iverson serves as Founder and CEO of Freedom House Sober Living, CEO of CrossRoads, and Co-Founder and Director for Shine A Light Foundation. In long-term recovery from all drugs and alcohol since 2006, Iverson knows firsthand the struggles facing this particularly underserved population. In 2010, Iverson founded Freedom House as a pathway for people who struggle with substance use disorder to become clean, sober, and productive members of the community. Since then, Freedom House has added partner companies CrossRoads of Southern Nevada and Shine A Light Foundation to provide a more holistic approach that incorporates treatment, housing, case management, medical detox, homeless outreach, and employment assistance to thousands of members of the community. “Freedom House has changed drastically over time, going from a simple housing provider to now operating an inpatient drug treatment center, outpatient clinic, and transitional housing program,” said Iverson. “Our
small grassroots homeless outreach program called Shine A Light is now its own 501(c)3 foundation, with an army of volunteers that go out into the streets delivering supplies and hope to the hopeless. Our goal is to develop a relationship with them, build trust with them, and show them a way out when they are ready.” It was the people who showed up for him many years ago that helped him the most during his recovery, and now he aims to do the same for others. “What helped me the most in my recovery journey was to have someone who not only believed in me but also gave me the inspiration and tools that I needed to overcome the barriers, mostly mental,” said Iverson. “Someone to give me a hand up, to provide me with the tools and structure that are necessary to make such significant life changes. Our work at Freedom House, CrossRoads, and Shine A Light all strive to assist in this mission.” In tackling the stigma surrounding issues such as substance abuse and mental health, Iverson hopes to send a clear message to those within the community, “that it’s okay to not be okay, he said, “that there is power in our truths, that shame and guilt can fade away, that there is no reason for our past to have to define our futures, that there is hope and that there are people who truly care.” CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “MY POSITION AT BELL SOLAR HAS ALLOWED ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE OF SERVICE TO NOT ONLY THE TEAM I LEAD AND OUR COMMUNITY, BUT ALSO TO HAVE AN IMPACT ON THOSE STRUGGLING IN OUR COMMUNITY.” Those people who care include the Freedom House, CrossRoads, and Shine A Light teams, as well as employees from Bell who volunteer at local food banks, Shine A Light, and Victory Outreach East Las Vegas to bring cheer to underprivileged children during the holidays. Iverson’s business partner Breann McCulloch, who also serves as Bell’s Chief Revenue Officer, is equally as involved in the Las Vegas community. She serves as Volunteer Chief Development Officer for Shine A Light Foundation and works closely with women in the local recovery community through the We Care Foundation. “My position at Bell Solar has allowed me the opportunity to be of service to not only the team I lead and our community, but also to have an impact on those struggling in our community,” said McCulloch. “Our motto at Bell is ‘We are not the same,’ and we live this by teaching and leading our team to also be of service. Creating the opportunities for individuals both inside the Bell organization and through the agencies I work with for people to overcome barriers to become the best versions of themselves possible.” The core values of Bell echo those of the three organizations Iverson has been instrumental in founding and running. “We strive to serve our community and positively impact people's lives. We try to leave the world a little better than we found it and help people understand that second chances are plentiful and that regardless of a person's position or status, we all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” said Iverson. Indeed, the team at Bell is leaving the world, even beyond Las Vegas, a little better. The company’s

partnership with the Give Power Foundation works to provide electricity and fresh water treatment plants to small villages around the world that otherwise would not have access to electricity or fresh water. “Last year, our team collectively donated over $100,000 to the Give Power Foundation, which qualified us to take 12 members of our team to Nepal on a trek,” said Iverson. “We installed a solar system on the roof of a small medical clinic in a village high in the Himalayan mountain range.” A native Las Vegan, Iverson graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1992 and was in the Leadership Las Vegas Class of 2011. His commitment to serving the community runs deep, and he’s regularly looking for additional ways to get involved. He’s previously served on the Board for HELP of Southern Nevada, HOPE For Prisoners, and currently serves as a director on the Shine A Light Foundation Board. “I am inspired each and every single day,” said Iverson. “From the homeless person who makes a decision to make some changes to the person who comes looking for an opportunity and discovers their true potential. I am inspired by the team of people who pour into the work we do every day to make a difference.” McCulloch, also a native Las Vegan, is a former showgirl turned entrepreneur before focusing her efforts on bringing renewable energy solutions to valley residents through Bell. “I’m inspired by watching people rise from the ashes of their past, breaking through mental barriers, overcoming trauma and tribulation, and putting in the work to live an extraordinary life.”

HUNT IN GTON JE WE LE RS For Jenny O. Calleri, the fulfillment of her lifelong dream to own a jewelry store brought the opportunity to give back to local causes in the Las Vegas community and to those who made her industry possible: the minors in East Africa. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Calleri worked her way up through various local jewelry stores before ultimately taking the reins of the historic Huntington Jewelers, which has kept valley residents supplied with exceptional jewels since 1950. This year she added an additional location in Summerlin. Through these stores, Calleri celebrates her passion for color and fine jewelry as well as for where they came from. “You can buy jewelry anywhere, but when you buy from me, we are really giving back to our industry, and we are helping to educate the next generation,” she said. Through Gem Legacy and the Natural Diamond Council, Calleri supports vocational training, entrepreneurship, and community development in the East African communities that rely on the mining industry. “Anyone can buy a diamond, but when you buy a diamond or a gemstone, and you know what part of the country it came out of — the trickle-down effect is real,” she explained. “Africa is such a resourceful part of the world when it comes to my industry.” Gem Legacy works to empower the miners through education and supplies. “We teach them gemological
training on how the earth forms these beautiful gemstones, and we buy them equipment and teach them how to use it,” she said. Calleri not only supports Gem Legacy through in-store events that give back to the organization, but also she supports the designers who buy gems through the organization and the cutters. “I sell artifacts of life and wearable art,” said Calleri. “When I can know the designer who literally went to the mine and picked this gemstone out, and I know that she made a difference in another part of the world and then comes back and shares that story with me, I’m part of history.” Jewelry has always carried symbolic meaning, and the jewelry at Huntington Jewelers is no different. “When you wear something, there’s a story behind it; when you come into my store, everything has a story, and I want to share that with others,” she said. To be sure, Calleri is passionate about what she does, but she’s also passionate about issues closer to home, particularly causes that support women and children and those who have suffered abuse and neglect. “I’m trying to align myself with people who have a common interest,” she said. Huntington Jewelers has placed its support behind St. Jude’s Ranch for Children and National Association for Women Business Owners to give grants to entrepreneurs trying to pave their own way. “PEOPLE COME IN MY SHOP LOOKING FOR HELP ALL THE TIME, AND I DO MY BEST TO HELP THEM.” M J B RAD FORD’S 307 Giving back to local children and supporting the local community are two causes important to MJ Bradford also. Bradford, the owner of MJ Bradford’s 307 Barbershop, celebrated the shop’s 3rd-anniversary last month. A transplant from Michigan, Bradford is committed to cultivating a safe and welcoming space at his 12-chair barbershop. “I want my business to always be a safe place for the community,” said Bradford. “Where no matter what, they know they can come and get a good clean haircut and feel great about themselves.” Inspired by his roots and upbringing, Bradford recognizes the important role that local businesses play in the communities in which they serve. “I come from Pontiac, Michigan, where the community looks out for one another,” he said. “When you don’t have much, it’s important to be able to lean on those around you.” Recognizing how hard times have been for so many lately and understanding the confidence-building power

of a fresh haircut, Bradford organized his shop’s first annual back-to-school drive, where 150 local students received free haircuts and backpacks with school supplies in preparation for returning to the classroom this past August. “We are always looking for new ways to give back,” said Bradford when speaking about ways his business gives back and the fundraisers he holds. “People come in my shop looking for help all the time, and I do my best to help them.” Though relatively new to the Las Vegas community, it’s clear that Bradford’s heart and business are committed to his neighbors. “I want to know that I made a difference in the community to the best of my ability, creating more opportunities for people around me and people who need the help,” he said. “And through example, I have shown those around me that I mentor how important it is to give back because everything in life takes a village.”
Ray DiNardi & Camilla Dorand at Jags and Jets benefiting Miracle Flights
JAG UA R LA ND R OV ER For Ray DiNardi, General Manager of Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas, aligning with the specific groups within the community that will be the most impactful is one of the biggest challenges when determining whom to support. “We obviously can’t say yes to everybody, even though we might want to,” he said. “We have tried to get involved with groups that have mission statements that align with what we believe will help improve our community by providing much-needed services.” Growing up in the Las Vegas Valley, DiNardi has seen the incredibly rapid growth of the city and the challenges that can come along with growing so quickly. “Witnessing all that growth, going from a small community in the desert to a major metropolitan community, a community that has provided tremendous opportunity, as well as tremendous challenges, has been an amazing experience,” he said. And with great opportunity comes great responsibility, and the Findlay Automotive Group, which owns Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas, has championed a variety of causes. “The Findlay Automotive Group has always believed that it is our responsibility as businesspeople to be active participants in our community,” said DiNardi. Under his leadership, Jaguar Land Rover Las Vegas has supported local organizations for more than 20 years, including The Boy Scouts’ annual auction and sporting clays shoot, Adams Place’s, for whom they hosted the organization’s Vintage and Vines event, as well as Red Rock City Lifestyle’s Jags and Jets benefiting Miracle Flights, held this past June. With an understanding of how life-changing these organizations can be for families in times of crisis, events such as Jags and Jets help raise awareness and funds to support the cause, bringing together many of whom had never heard about the organization. “Having a child with a life-threatening illness must be the most difficult challenge a family could face,” said DiNardi. “Miracle Flights works to help people who find themselves in that position by providing transportation to and from potentially lifesaving treatment for their family member.” DiNardi’s leadership is guided by gratitude and empathy. “This community has given so much opportunity to not only me and my family but also to countless people who have relocated here over the past seven decades,” he said. “How could anyone not be compelled to give back?”

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUR FAVORITE NONPROFITS WHILE MAXIMIZING TAX BENEFITS
“It’s been extremely gratifying to help people support charities they care about while at the same time saving tremendously when it comes to taxes.” Rich Kruithoff is describing the work he’s been very thankful to do over the past five years as founder and owner of Charitable Planning Services, a tax and business consulting firm based in Las Vegas. Kruithoff says he and his team are experts on a tax strategy called Donor Advised Fund Strategy. This allows a person to make sizable charitable donations that one can immediately claim as a tax deduction. However, this donation is not distributed immediately. It is initially placed into an account [a Donor Advised Fund] and is then distributed out in small chunks over time to nonprofit organizations of an individual’s choosing. The strategy also has a major family legacy component, so clients can also do generational planning.
“The law states you can donate up to 60 percent of your adjusted gross income, but the problem is most people don’t know about it,” said Kruithoff. “In fact, most CPAs don’t know about it because they are just too busy. They don’t have the time to learn and educate their clients about it, so that’s where we come in.” Kruithoff said his firm works directly with CPAs and financial advisors who refer clients to him. Kruithoff then connects these clients with a 501(c)3 organization called the “Foundation for Advanced Philanthropy,” which facilitates the process of disseminating the funds raised for hundreds of charitable organizations across the country. So, who would be an ideal client to benefit from a Donor Advised Fund Strategy? Kruithoff said they fall into three key categories: first, they must have a recognized tax problem. This means they are currently facing a huge tax bill and need to find options to reduce it. Secondly, the ideal client must be charitable-minded and serious about giving back to the community. And third, the person must also want to create a legacy plan. “There are a lot of people at the beginning who are kind of charitable-minded, but by the time we are done talking to them about how this works, they become VERY charitable-minded,” said Kruithoff. “That’s because, with this strategy, the money you donate will be reinvested and built up over time to eventually become a significant amount. So, what I usually tell people is rather than getting a plaque with your name on it to be put in a room of a hospital that you have donated to, you will get a wing named after you.” Kruithoff admits this type of high-level charitable and tax strategy planning is not suitable for everyone, but his firm does represent all types of people and professionals. “A bulk of our clients are doctors and dentists, and we help a lot of small business owners as well,” said Kruithoff. “For example, if someone has a plumbing business with ten trucks on the road, he’s making some decent money. But he is a “small” business owner, probably employing about 20 people. And I am going to tell you this right now: he has a tax problem.”

Kruithoff said anyone interested in working with him should first consider what charitable organizations they want to support. And with this particular tax strategy, people don’t have to pick just one nonprofit. They can give to several, and the types of organizations they want to support can change over time. “It’s just been a real blessing to show people how they can put their money to work for the charities they care about and can really make a big difference,” said Kruithoff. “We have millions of dollars every year that are going through this type of tax strategy. The nonprofits are getting money every year, and there will be a very large endowment going to them at a future date, making a significant impact on these organizations.

Being Thankful for Water Conservation ARTICLE BY PAIGE CANDEE | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SOUTHERN NEVADA WATER AUTHORITY
Q&A with SNWA on continuing and intensifying water conservation efforts to ensure quality of life and economic vitality

Colby Pellegrino
We all should be thankful for water. And every drop counts these days. Red Rock City Lifestyle connected with the Southern Nevada Water Authority to get the real story of what is happening with the Southern Nevada water supply and how we can all pitch in to ensure there is enough water to go around for years to come. Colby Pellegrino | Deputy General Manager of Resources Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) As the Deputy General Manager of Resources for the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) and the Las Vegas Valley Water District, Colby Pellegrino is responsible for the management of the SNWA’s water resource portfolio, which includes protecting Nevada’s interests and rights to Colorado River water through interstate negotiations, developing regional water conservation programs, managing groundwater resources, and water resource planning. She also serves on the Board of Alliance for Water Efficiency, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the efficient and sustainable use of water and water conservation advocacy throughout North America.
WHAT IS THE CURRENT WATER SHORTAGE SITUATION IN SOUTHERN NEVADA? The worst drought in more than 1,200 years continues to reduce water flowing from the Colorado River into Lake Mead, the source of 90 percent of Southern Nevada’s water supply. After 20 years of megadrought conditions and warmer temperatures, Lake Mead’s water levels continue to drop to critically low levels. The lake has dropped more than 170 feet since 2000. In response to the falling lake levels, the federal government declared a tier two shortage for Colorado River users,
which will reduce Southern Nevada’s annual 300,000 acre-feet river to 275,000 acre-feet next year. However, our water consumption last year was 242,00 acre-feet and well below the shortage threshold. This is one reason why water conservation remains so important.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE WATER SHORTAGE ON THE COLORADO RIVER? First, it’s important to remember that our community has been preparing for this for the last two decades through our water conservation programs and our investment in infrastructure in Lake Mead. But the conditions on the Colorado River are not good, and Nevada is not the only river user to have its annual allocation reduced. Under tier two shortage conditions, Arizona’s allocation will be cut by 592,000 acre-feet, and Mexico will see its allocation cut by 104,000 acre-feet. The fact is that climate change and aridification have reduced the river’s annual flows to a little more than 12 million acre-feet of water per year (mafy). Yet, collectively the basin states and Mexico are using about 14 mafy. Despite agreements between the basin states and an international treaty with Mexico that allow up to 16.5 mafy to be used, simple math tells you that’s not sustainable in the short or long term. There simply isn’t enough water flowing in the river to sustain the current water usage, so we all must reduce water usage.
WITH THE SEVERE WATER SHORTAGE IN LAKE MEAD, WHAT CUTS AND CHANGES CAN SOUTHERN NEVADANS EXPECT NEXT YEAR? At least in the near term, we’re in a relatively enviable position because we are not using our full Colorado River

allocation. Over the past 20 years, this community has invested in infrastructure and conservation programs to protect access to our water supply and reduce our water consumption. We are one of the only communities in the world that captures, treats, and recycles nearly every drop of water used indoors, allowing us to stretch our limited water supply. So, as climate change and aridification continue to impact water availability in the Colorado River Basin, we must intensify our outdoor water conservation efforts to ensure our quality of life and economic vitality. Conservation works. Last year, Southern Nevadans consumed 26 percent less Colorado River water than they did in 2002 despite the addition of more than 750,000 new residents during that time.

TELL US ABOUT SNWA'S LOW LAKE LEVEL PUMPING STATION AND HOW IT WILL ENSURE SOUTHERN NEVADA MAINTAINS ACCESS TO ITS PRIMARY WATER SUPPLIES IN LAKE MEAD. While our water resources are limited, we live in one of the most water-secure cities in the Colorado River Basin because we’ve invested in the infrastructure to ensure we have access to our water supply. SNWA engineered and constructed a deep-water intake (Intake No. 3) and Low Lake Level Pumping Station at Lake Mead, which secures access to the community’s water supply. Even if lake levels decline to a point where no water can pass through Hoover Dam to meet downstream water demands in California, Arizona, and Mexico, Southern Nevada will have access to its water in Lake Mead.
“Our willingness to adapt to changing climate conditions and manage our water supply responsibly will help ensure our future.”
WHAT ARE SOME KEY INITIATIVES THAT THE SNWA IS ENACTING TO CONSERVE WATER? To help protect our water supply and our community’s economic sustainability, the SNWA and its member agencies are implementing a number of aggressive conservation measures to further reduce outdoor water consumption. These measures include a ban on new man-made lakes and fountains (including on the Las Vegas Strip) and additional restrictions on decorative grass, evaporative cooling systems, golf courses, and the size of new swimming pools. Local water agencies also are evaluating water rates in response to these unprecedented conditions, including introducing fees for excessive water use. We are working with the community to ensure future development is as water smart as possible through these restrictions on grass, pool sizes, and evaporative cooling systems. No one questions building codes about protecting against earthquakes in San Francisco — water scarcity is our natural disaster, and we are implementing municipal code changes to ensure new development has minimal impact.
WHAT WATER CONSERVATION EFFORTS CAN RESIDENTS MAKE TO HAVE THE BIGGEST IMPACT? About 60 percent of our drinking water is used outdoors, and much of that is to irrigate landscapes. Immediately reducing your outdoor
water use is the most important action you can take to protect our water supply. -Change your watering clock each season to comply with the seasonal watering restrictions. Water only on your three assigned days in the fall and spring, one day in the winter, and never on Sunday. -Convert grass to drip-irrigated trees and plants. If the only time you step on your grass is to mow it, it’s time to take it out. The SNWA offers a cash incentive of up to $3 per square foot of grass replaced with drip-irrigated plants and trees. You can apply for the Water Smart Landscapes Rebate on snwa.com. -Report water waste to your water provider. Check your irrigation system weekly to identify leaks or misaligned sprinklers that may let water flow off your property, which can result in fines starting at $80 and going as high as $5,000 for repeat offenders. And, if you see water waste in your neighborhood, report it to your water utility.
WHAT DOES WATER MEAN TO YOU? Simply put, water is essential to all life, and it’s the most valuable natural resource in Southern Nevada. I’m proud to be part of the SNWA and its efforts to protect and conserve our water supply. I’m also proud of what this

community has accomplished over the past two decades through its commitment to water conservation. I’m often asked if we’ll run out of water, and my answer is that we don’t have to. Our willingness to adapt to changing climate conditions and manage our water supply responsibly will help ensure our future.
It’s also important to remember that if you moved or started a business here after 2002, you were able to do so because of the conservation of those who came before you. But to weather climate change and sustain long-term economic growth, everyone must step up and increase their conservation efforts.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE LOCALS UNDERSTAND?
The SNWA is a not-for-profit public agency comprised of seven local water and wastewater agencies (Big Bend Water District, Boulder City, Clark County Water Reclamation District, Henderson, Las Vegas, Las Vegas Valley Water District and North Las Vegas). As the wholesale water provider for more than 2.2 million residents in Southern Nevada, the SNWA is responsible for water treatment and wholesale delivery, as well as acquiring and managing long-term water resources for the Las Vegas Valley.
Climate change is impacting communities everywhere. Some cities will have to deal with rising sea levels and others with super storms. Our reality is less water and warmer temperatures, and we will need to adapt to sustain the future. Every single sector of this community has a role to play in water conservation. We don’t have the luxury of one group saying, “Everybody but me.” Everyone must do their part to conserve water.

Innovation and Creation at ART 2 art Gallery SUPPORTIVE ARTIST COMMUNITY REVEALS INTERACTIVE DINING TABLE ART EXPERIENCES

The holidays are the time to surround yourself with warmth and support from those you love. Art can be an embodiment of that feeling. And many of the pieces at ART 2 art Gallery can help evoke those emotions, spark inspiration, and encourage conversation. Located in Tivoli Village, ART 2 art Gallery has an ever-changing display of paintings, sculptures, and photography. Innovation is a key factor here, where artists create pieces with different layers of textures and purpose. With a constant influx of new artists, the gallery offers the community something fresh, giving guests something thought-provoking as they exit the doors. If something really catches your eye, ART 2 art CEO Heiko Katins and his crew will help you take it home to enjoy in your own house. Heiko is committed to working and helping each artist put their best work forward. He allows the artists the freedom to create what they are most passionate about but still gives them pointers on what will get their art on the gallery walls. If Heiko notices that people are purchasing a particular style of painting, he’ll recommend pointers for the artist to create their own take on it in their own work.
“We try to educate artists on how to sell their work,” Heiko began, “we know the customers. We know what spaces they have and what colors they like, so sometimes the artists need to adapt.” Also, a custom piece can be commissioned if a guest likes an artist's style but might not particularly like one that is already displayed. Art is a form of self-expression, but the gallery is still a business, and making sure that the community wants to invest in art collecting is important at ART 2 art. ART 2 art also provides framing and printing services. The frames are intricately crafted and designed to complement any purchased art piece. From gold to sterling silver or neon to earth tones, frames are an essential piece in enhancing the experience you get from appreciating art. Not only can frames do this, but so can the textures and materials used. The art gallery is abundant with new and innovative ideas. “Art of Culinary” is an interactive dining experience that transports guests into the world through eating. While sitting at a seemingly normal table, participants casually eat until the table is activated. CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / R E D R O C K

A show or interactive imagery immerses the guests into the art, allowing for a more engaging and exciting dining experience. Using translucent plates, each bite unveils the vivid display the table is presenting. Artist Peter W. Hart is currently being featured at ART 2 art alongside other artists. Peter’s art is unique, as he includes different textures and materials in his pieces. His collection, “Rags to Riches,” is dedicated to and inspired by his loved ones, so he incorporated rags and t-shirts into the golds and reds of some pieces to commemorate his parents. Peter’s wife is from Italy and loves to cook, so he used a variety of different pastas to represent her and her love for the culinary world. This collection is perfect for a Thanksgiving gift or a discussion piece over the celebratory feast, as it represents all there is to be thankful for – values, love, and cherishing the small yet momentous experiences in life.

More Than Just Waxing THREE CHEERS FOR THREE PEERS ARTICLE BY ANDRES MOLINA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ATI GRINSPUN
Emily Andrews, Mariana Leake, and Brittany Alexander are three friends who cofounded Cheers Beauty in Las Vegas. The three had great synergy as coworkers, thanks to their similar work ethics and professional mindset. The three ambitious women previously worked together for nearly a decade. They became close friends and earned each other’s trust, so much so that after eight years, they decided to break out on their own and build a business. Cheers Beauty now provides reliable and high-quality services for its clients at competitive prices. On the surface, Cheers Beauty is a business run by three passionate women whose expertise is in waxing. They are known for their expertise and attention to detail and work well together because they have similar waxing techniques and share a love for giving clients the best experience possible. But Emily, Mariana, and Brittany do more than just waxing. Each of the ladies brings their own unique talent and approach to Cheers Beauty. Emily takes great pride in being a wax expert who has worked to perfect her craft. She provides waxing, skin
lightening, brow lamination, lash lifting, and brow and lash tinting. Emily said, “I try to create the best experience possible for you when getting serviced by me.” Mariana is a bilingual esthetician who specializes in waxing. She is a great listener with an outgoing personality and boasts more than a decade of waxing experience. “I speak English and Spanish for anyone who needs a Spanish-speaking waxer. Waxing is fun, trust me!” Brittany has been a licensed esthetician and wax specialist since 2008 and proclaims, “Once you get waxed by me, you will be hooked for life!” She provides waxing, lash lifting, and brow and lash tinting services. All three ladies are perfectionists who genuinely desire to create great relationships with their clients. The combined experience, knowledge, and unique talents of each of the three business owners create a space where clients feel comfortable and know they will receive excellent service. “We are grateful for each other as friends and business partners and for our clients who have shown us so much

support this past year,” shared the trio. “Owning a business has allowed us to be more in control of our own lives and future. We have been able to spend more time with family and friends than ever before.” To build on the sisterhood vibe at Cheers Beauty, the trio has created wax parties for groups that want to have fun with their friends, families, coworkers, or bridal party. Cheers Beauty’s wax parties allow groups to have a private celebration for two hours and get pampered with a waxing service while enjoying snacks and drinks. Partygoers have the option of choosing the area where they would like to get waxed. The Cheers Beauty team encourages everyone, even beginners, to book an appointment with them. “It is normal to be nervous when trying waxing for the first time or to give waxing a second try after having a bad experience. We want to let people know that if they try us out, we will give them a positive experience that will keep them coming back.”
“We are grateful for each other as friends and business partners and for our clients who have shown us so much support this past year.”

Your Autumn Dinner Party Is Served Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings.
For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

Insider Tips for Hosting:
• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”
