SILVER LININGS! AS 2020 COMES TO AN END AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO A NEW YEAR, I'D LIKE TO SHARE SOME PERSONAL REFLECTION AS WELL AS IMMENSE GRATITUDE FOR OUR PARTNERS WHO SAW POTENTIAL AND POSSIBLITY IN RED ROCK LIFESTYLE IN SPITE OF THE PANDEMIC. While watching the morning news in April I heard Burton Hughes talking about silver linings. Burton is not only the GM of Subaru of Las Vegas, he is also a pastor and good friend. His calming voice said, “HOPE is not just wishful thinking, rather it is cultivated

in the hearts of those who choose to see potential and possibility in the darkest of clouds.” A pandemic is certainly a dark cloud. The holiday season is here and the virus still among us. HOPE is more important than ever. When I heard these words, I had a very dark cloud personally as well. I resigned from a job in February with confidence of landing a similar role that paid better. I was wrong! COVID-19 sparked a hiring freeze; the hiring manager said I could expect an offer, but HR did not have a date when this would happen. Shortly after, a recruiter for Lifestyle Publications called me. She explained that if I were selected, I could own and publish a magazine for and about the community that I love. The opportunity resonated with me. Was 2020 the right year to become a business owner? Who did I contact for advice? Burton. I knew he would have great advice, not only as a pastor, but also from his marketing expereince with Subaru globally

IT IS THE MOST POPULAR MONTH TO GET ENGAGED. While online shopping is experiencing record sales, 2020 has also taught us how important local businesses are to our economy, just like MJ Christensen Diamonds, a longstanding family-owned retail establishment in this community. Be sure to ask for a tour of the winery too, you’ll be warmly welcomed gaining a greater understanding about the journey from vine to wine. You may even find yourself getting involved in making a barrel. There are also other opportunities to experience the charm of Grape Expectations and Vegas Valley Winery with events like yoga and wine, painting parties, VGK game night specials, and wine education. You can also host an event of your own in their venue. It’s a great place to keep in mind for the holiday celebrations coming soon especially since supporting local businesses has meant more than ever this year. Patty and Mike are beyond grateful to their winery family, “The Cork Squad,” for the support they have received. Their generosity very literally meant survival as the pandemic drastically reduced business to the point where they were wondering if they could move forward. They are thankful from the bottom of their hearts and with continued support have high hopes of being an integral part of the community for years to come.

Christmas might be on pause this year. Long before “social dis-

tancing” was common practice, another staple holiday tradition existed in Las Vegas. After 20 years Glittering Lights has grown to attract 250,000 annual visitors to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Vehicles loaded with family and friends enjoy a 2.5-mile holiday course featuring five million LED lights. Traffic is anticipated to be even higher in 2020 which will help raise much needed funds. CHARITY AT ITS HEART With the meaning of Christmas portraying giving and bringing joy, Glittering Lights takes pride in their charitable components. With a portion of each ticket sold, Glittering Lights makes up more than 50% of what the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities raises every year. The COVID-19 pandemic required rescheduling of NASCAR events that would normally help fund the 501(c)3. Hundreds of charities throughout Southern Nevada apply and receive funds that meet the direct needs of children. St. Jude’s Ranch for Children is just one example. Their CEO, Christina Vela says, “Our Sibling Preservation program has benefited from this grant program annually. This allows us to provide much needed services and support to children living in foster care separated from their brothers and sisters. We are dedicated to creating new positive memories for these siblings in our community who need hope and healing.” In addition, Goodwill of Southern Nevada offers a $5 discounted entry voucher for Glittering Lights with a donation of clothing or household items, and area Boy Scout troops sell concessions at the event gaining interpersonal, money management and leadership skills while earning money for their activities. Event producers are John and Shannon Bentham. John is the founder of Ivory Star Productions and Shannon is their Creative Director. Given the impact the virus has had on shows and events, it is especially poignant they are keeping the giving spirit alive with their philanthropic effort. “Our fans count down the days until opening night,” says John. “We have been so honored to become a tradition in the fabric of our community and are thrilled we can present a safe experience where family and friends can enjoy the magic of the holiday season. We appreciate support from local companies like Goettl and La Bonita who love Las Vegas and want to be a part of the gift of Christmas.” More than ever the Bentham’s and their team want guests to feel the sense of tradition reminiscent of togetherness. They have worked hard to incorporate additional components to ramp up the joy and are proud to bring in new light displays with love and dedication to the community. lights before the crowd. The Fast Pass lane has brought smiles to countless faces over the years thanks to Diamondback Land Surveying, a Glittering Lights partner for five years. A Season Pass holder gets unlimited access and can use the Fast Pass lane during specific dates where extended waits are common. SANTA SELFIE STATION In adaptation to COVID-19, Glittering Lights will have a new Santa Selfie Station, an additional ticket-type from Silverstate Schools Credit Union, that includes Christmas caroling, photos with Santa at Santa’s House, and treats available for purchase in the Coco Chalet. At Santa Selfie Station, guests will receive entry through the Fast Pass lane for shortened wait times. With many event spaces limiting their engagements and venue capacities this year, companies can host their holiday parties at Glittering Lights in the Santa Selfie Station for a socially distanced celebration. LIVING NATIVITY Though there are many holiday events that take place throughout Southern Nevada, what makes Glittering Lights such a special experience for many fans is the Living Nativity presented by Sudden Impact Collision Repair Specialists, an activation in a special area of the lights where cars can pause and take in the scene. This live replication of the nativity scene is acted out by area church groups and will take place on select nights throughout the season, serving as a reminder to be mindful and kind. SPORTS ALLEY One new component is the Sports Alley tribute made possible by LiUNA 872; a display area filled with tributes to Las Vegas’ sports teams. A Sports Alley has been a dream of the Glittering Lights team for years, and now the holiday show can truly give tribute to the entertainment capital of the world’s sports scene. This year, Glittering Lights will introduce The Neon Forest presented by Southwest Medical Associates, a magical place within the Glittering Lights experience that is lined with glowing trees from side to side. Businesses and community members are invited to sponsor a neon lit tree in The Neon Forest with proceeds assisting

A

NEW COMMUNITY OF PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL LOTS AND PUBLIC GATHERING SPACES IS ON TAP FOR THE FORMER BONNIE SPRINGS

RANCH SITE, AND DEVELOPERS ARE ANTICIPATING CONSTRUCTION ON LAND IMPROVEMENTS STARTING BY THE END OF 2020. The Ranch at Red Rock will span 65 acres of private land within the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, located 15 miles west of Las Vegas. The public area will cater to homeowners and visitors and will feature two restaurants, an event barn, amphitheater and boutique hotel. “The event barn is probably the first thing that will be constructed since it’s in demand,” said Joel Laub, developer of The Ranch at Red Rock and owner of CSR Development. The space will host weddings, corporate events, gatherings and more. “There’s a pent-up demand for a restaurant in the canyon since there are no nearby services, so we expect one of the restaurants will be the second structure built.” Plans call for a farm-to-table fine dining restaurant and a casual restaurant. The amphitheater will present small music events, and the boutique hotel will feature a spa, Laub added. According to Randall Jones, project partner and real estate attorney, the amenities will fill a void for services in the area. “There really are no services in the canyon right now, so this will be the only place,” Jones said. “The restaurants will cater to families who want to come up to have a bite to eat and to cyclists on their route up to the canyon. If you want to have a really nice dinner, it will be a way to get out of town without having to go too far.” Jones and Laub have a long history of exploring Red Rock Canyon. The native Las Vegans and long-time friends grew up hiking the canyon and developed a strong appreciation for the land. After they discovered the Bonnie Springs Ranch property was for sale, they teamed up to purchase the site. “Honoring the land is a very important process in this journey,” Jones said. “I’ve hiked virtually every canyon with Joel. We have a commitment to be sensitive to the environment because we live here and we want to do this in a way that will be as sensitive as possible to this conservation area.” The developers are consulting with botanists, naturalists, horticulturalists, landscape architects, Clark County staff and the Bureau of Land Management to ensure sustainable practices will be put in place to allow the natural habitat to thrive. “The community is in the flyway for the monarch butterflies so we are talking about having milkweed for them to eat,” Jones said.

According to Laub, chairman of the board of trustees for The Nature Conservancy Nevada chapter, lots will be released to home buyers in their raw form with the natural plant life in-tact. The Nature Conservancy is a global conservation organization dedicated to conserving the lands and waters on which all life depends. “We will put in roads, walking paths, bridle fences, and a creek and pond system,” Laub said. “We want to make the community look as natural as possible, like it’s always been there. We’ll use natural materials and colors to blend into the landscape and be complementary to the canyon.” The public areas will reflect old-world European communities, mixing Spanish Colonial, French Provencal and Rustic Italian architectural styles. Additional design features include natural stone walls with low-pitched clay-roof tiles and wide-set eaves, thick arches rising up from piers, and expansive courtyards lined with stone and clay. The Ranch at Red Rock will cater to those that want to live in an exclusive eco-conscious community away from the heart of the city, according to Laub. Five of the 20 designated lots have been sold, and five will be released for sale in early 2021, Laub said. Lots range from two to four acres in size and start at $4.5 million. Lots are listed through Kristen Routh-Silberman, a Las Vegas Realtor® at Synergy Sotheby’s International Realty. “What you have here is basically an island sitting in the middle of a national conservation area in a state park,” Laub said. “You won’t be affected by noise. You’re 1,500 feet higher in elevation than Las Vegas so it’s a little cooler, and since it’s next to the Developer Joel Laub and Attorney and Project Partner Randall Jones at the future site of The Ranch at Red Rock

mountains, the afternoons are shaded in the summer. You’re 15 minutes from a grocery store and 25 minutes from The Strip.”

Red Rock Lifestyle | December 2020

Residents will access their home via a private drive and be greeted by a guard gate. Laub said construction could start on the first homes by late 2021. An architectural design committee will work with homeowners on the design of their home. “The design will be a collaboration between the committee and the homeowner, and we have a variety of style guidelines such as French country, Italian country, Mediterranean and a canyon contemporary with natural materials and colors,” Laub said. “The overall look and feel of the Ranch at Red Rock will be very traditional.” Interest from potential homebuyers has come from out-of-state and local residents, according to Jones. “I think based on what I’ve seen the timing is really good because there are a lot of people looking for something unique and different where they can have a little space,” Jones said. “It’s a very exclusive project that will give people one other option to look at and consider for a really beautiful home.”
