Summer, Scoops & Small Discoveries

July 2025 PUBLISHER

Jake Slowinski | jake.slowinski@citylifestyle.com CO-PUBLISHER

Tiffany Slowinski | tiffany.slowinski@citylifestyle.com

Dear Readers, There’s something about July that nudges us to get out there. Maybe it’s the longer days, the sudden urge to road trip, or just the siren call of soft serve. Whatever your reason, this Explore Issue is all about discovering what’s waiting just outside your door—whether that’s a hidden trail, a perfect branzino, or an inspiring story from someone who calls New Jersey home. We start with a big heart and a familiar face. On page 18, we sit down with Real Housewives of New Jersey star Rachel Fuda, who opens up about balancing motherhood, marriage, and the spotlight. Her take on what it really means to put “Family First” is refreshingly down-to-earth and surprisingly relatable—even if your life doesn’t involve reunion specials. What’s summer without ice cream? On page 38, “Here’s the Scoop” gives us a sweet peek into some of Ramapo Valley’s coolest local creameries—where the flavors are bold, the lines are long, and every cone comes with a little childhood nostalgia (and, if we’re honest, a little dribble down your shirt). Craving something savory? “Branzino for Heroes” on page 28 tells the story of one local chef giving back to veterans and first responders—one beautifully plated dish at a time. It’s a reminder that food can do more than fill us up—it can connect, honor, and heal. Need a break but don’t want to go far? We’ve got you. “The Ultimate Weekend Getaway Right in NJ” on page 24 proves that a change of scenery doesn’t need to involve TSA lines or carry-on limits. From charming inns to unexpected wine trails, it’s the perfect excuse to treat yourself to 48 hours of something new. And don’t miss our feature on Flo Salon on page 30, where style meets substance. From sustainability to standout service, we dig into what makes this local gem more than just a place for a trim—and why their loyal clients wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else. So whether you’re packing your bags or just packing a cooler for the park, we hope this issue inspires you to explore, unwind, and maybe even try the pistachio flavor this time. ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LORI POLSON

MEET LORI POLSON

From Representing Artists to Becoming One Herself For more than 25 years, Lori Polson built a career behind the scenes—connecting world-class portrait artists with collectors and clients. Today, she stepped out from behind the curtain and onto the canvas herself. Polson, a Bergen County local and a longtime art director-turned-portrait consultant, began her career at Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising Worldwide in New York. Yet it was her lifelong love of painting that ultimately drew her closer to the artists she represented— and eventually, into their world. “I’ve been drawing and painting my entire life,” she said. “My style leans toward expressionism and impressionism, but in my twenties I gave realism a shot and took classes at the Art Students League of New York. That’s where I met so many of the artists I still represent today.”

16

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CU LT U RE

Those relationships flourished and Polson founded her portrait agency, helping match traditional realist painters with collectors and clients around the country. “The reason for a portrait is to celebrate a person or an achievement—it’s a happy business,” she said. “I love finding the right artist for the right client.” It wasn’t until the pandemic lockdowns of 2020 that Polson returned to her own brushes. With her children home from school and college, she began painting again—starting with portraits of her kids. “It was a return to something very personal,” she said. “And then the landscapes, still lifes, and abstracts followed.” Her work, often described as expressive and richly textured, reflects what she calls “loose, juicy brushstrokes, dynamic cropping, and bold color combinations.” Drawing inspiration from Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act, Polson seeks to capture “the extraordinary hidden in the seemingly mundane.” Polson’s years of experience as a representative shape her perspective. “I have so much respect for the artists I represent,” she said. “They work under tight deadlines, with immense pressure to please a client. I don’t have that pressure—I paint freely, and I know what a gift that is.”

Even as she’s stepped into her own spotlight—exhibiting at venues including Chelsea galleries and public libraries—Polson continues to run her agency full time. “It’s hard to boast about yourself,” she laughed. “I could use an agent of my own.” Balancing creativity with business, she finds joy in both. “Sometimes I’ll finish a day of client work and head straight to my easel. It’s a great way to end the day.” Her advice to anyone pursuing creativity? “Go. Do it,” she says. “If you feel 19, even if you’re not—carry on like you are.” To view or purchase her work, visit loriweisbartart.com or learn more about portrait commissions at loripolson.com

Rachel Fuda on Balancing Motherhood and Reality TV Fame ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL LAGO, BELLACOSA BABIES

For Rachel Fuda, star of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, fame isn’t the finish line—family is. While millions of Bravo fans know her for her polished style, quick wit, and reality TV presence, Fuda remains firmly grounded in her role at home. “Being a mom is what defines me right now,” she shares. “This is a very temporary little-kid phase of life, and I’m trying to be as present as possible.” That phase is a full one. Fuda and her husband, John, are raising four children, ranging from a newborn to a high school senior. Their dinner conversations span from college decisions to toddler tantrums—and somehow, she makes it all look seamless. “I’m sending one son off to college and caring for a newborn at the same time,” she explains. “It’s full-circle chaos—but it’s beautiful.” Fuda, who was born on Long Island and raised in Bergen County, now calls Franklin Lakes home. Staying close to her roots has always been important. “There’s something special about knowing who your kids go to school with, who your neighbors are. You don’t need to hang out every weekend, but it’s nice to be surrounded by familiar, good people.”

Beyond her role on television, she’s a businesswoman. Together with her husband, she recently launched Glam Studio Suites in Norwood and helps operate Valet King, a tri-state parking concierge service. The workload is hefty, but the Fuda’s are clear on what matters. “We’ve always known what’s important—family, marriage, and doing right by people,” she notes. That clarity has helped her navigate the whirlwind of reality TV without losing herself. When she joined RHONJ, her youngest daughter Giuliana was just eight weeks old. “It was wild,” she laughs. “But we had a family conversation before committing. I wanted my oldest, Jaiden, to be comfortable with it. I’m really big on boundaries.” Jaiden, now a high school senior, embraced the opportunity—and even enjoys his own local fame. “He walks the boardwalk in Seaside Heights and gets stopped by girls asking for pictures. He’s loving it.” Still, the public spotlight has its downsides, especially online. Like many reality stars, Fuda has had to set clear boundaries with social media. “I’ve been in therapy for a long time, and I’m a big advocate for mental health. People will judge everything—from your parenting to the color of your shorts,” she says with a wry smile. “But I’ve learned the less you read, the better. Ignorance really is bliss.” Support comes not only from within her home, but also from her Bravo circle. Melissa and Joe Gorga—fellow castmates have become close friends. The families connected through their sons, who played youth football together, and that connection quickly deepened.

As for the show, Fuda takes a measured approach. She’s grateful for the experiences—attending the VMAs, meeting Bravo fans at BravoCon—but she keeps her life in perspective. “The show is secondary to me. My life doesn’t change whether I’m on or off it,” she affirms. “What I have in my real life is what matters most.” Looking ahead, she’s starting to think about the next phase. “Right now, I’m in survival mode,” she laughs. “But once the kids are all in school, I’d love to do something for myself. Write a book, maybe launch something new—something that fills my soul.” Her outlook is shaped by the long view of parenting. “Your kids need you in different ways as they grow. When they’re older, I know I’ll need something for me, too—something that’s just mine.” Giving back is already part of her story. Diagnosed with arthritis at just four years old, she had both hips replaced by 18. Today, she works closely with the Arthritis Foundation, hosting events and raising awareness for young people living with the condition. “There were no resources when I was 14, going through all that. I felt so different from everyone else,” she shares. “Now I try to be the support I didn’t have.” Through it all—motherhood, business, TV—her values haven’t wavered. “John always says, ‘One hand washes the other, and two hands wash a face.’ That’s how New Jersey works. That’s how we work.” For Fuda, staying grounded in what matters most—family, community, and authenticity—is the real key to navigating it all.

The Ultimate Weekend Getaway Right in NJ

MY ESCAPE TO PENDRY NATIRAR ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PENDRY HOTELS

T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TRAV E L

Sometimes, the perfect escape isn’t far away—it’s just a scenic hour from NYC. Tucked into the rolling hills of Somerset County, New Jersey, Pendry Natirar feels like a world apart. It's where luxury meets nature, and the result is nothing short of magic. If you're craving a weekend that actually feels like a vacation (without the hassle of travel), this hidden gem delivers in every way. Luxury in the Heart of Nature Pendry Natirar isn’t your average weekend stay—it’s an experience. Set on 90 acres of pristine countryside, the property is a stunning blend of rustic charm and modern sophistication. From the moment I drove through the gates, I felt the shift: slower pace, fresh air, and peace I hadn’t realized I needed. Every detail of the design is inspired by nature—from the earthy tones to the sprawling gardens and panoramic views.

UNEXPECTED EXPERIENCES THAT STICK WITH YOU

What makes Pendry Natirar special isn’t just the setting—it’s how it invites you to engage with it. This isn’t a place where you stay inside and watch the view from afar. It’s a place to explore, connect, and rediscover the little joys of being outdoors.

A MORNING ON THE FARM

One of my favorite parts of the trip? A visit to The Farm at Pendry Natirar. I joined a guided tour through the barnyard and got up close with their free-range chickens, fluffy sheep, and yes—adorable baby chicks. Beyond being cute, it was a real look into the farm’s sustainable practices and how everything on the property works in harmony with the land. It felt wholesome, grounding, and honestly, a little therapeutic.

BREAKFAST, FRESH FROM THE HEN HOUSE

Another charming surprise? The estate’s own hen house, home to over 150 free-range chickens. Their eggs go straight to Ninety Acres, the on-site restaurant, and end up on your breakfast plate the next morning. There’s something special about tasting a dish made with ingredients grown just steps away—it’s hyper-local dining at its best.

A DOSE OF ADVENTURE (IF YOU WANT IT)

If you’re like me and crave a little action between spa time and wine tastings, Pendry has you covered. Thanks to their partnership with Compass Sports, there are plenty of ways to get moving outdoors. CONTINUED >

HIKING THE GROUNDS

I kicked off the weekend with a hike along the estate’s private trails, winding through wildflowers and woods with views that looked like something out of a movie. It was peaceful, energizing, and the perfect way to shake off the week.

ARCHERY & AXE THROWING

Then, just for fun, I booked a private archery and axe throwing session—because why not? It was an hour of unexpected laughs and surprisingly satisfying aim practice. A little competitive, a little cathartic, and a whole lot of fun.

A WEEKEND THAT TRULY FEELS LIKE AN ESCAPE

Pendry Natirar was everything I didn’t know I needed: a luxurious yet down-to-earth retreat with just the right amount of adventure, indulgence, and fresh air. I left feeling lighter, calmer, and reconnected—to nature, to the moment, and to myself. So if you're looking for a getaway that doesn't require a plane ticket but still feels like a true escape, put Pendry Natirar at the top of your list. Trust me—you won’t want to leave.

SAUTÉED LEMON GARLIC BRANZINO WITH WARM TOMATO SALAD OVER BABY ARUGULA If you’ve ever had the desire to be bathed in the unfettered sunshine of your family’s sincerest adoration, then buy them a puppy. But if you just want them to love you a little more, make this dish and enjoy the warm embers of their gratitude. It’s that easy.

Metropolitan Seafood & Gourmet Upscale shop selling fresh seafood at the counter along with hummus, craft breads & local cheeses. 1320 US-22, Lebanon | metroseafood.com | Phone: (908) 840-4332

INGREDIENTS: • 1½ to 2 pounds of Branzino fillet (or use Sea Bass, Flounder, or even Red Snapper) • 3 tablespoons olive oil, separated • 2 teaspoons lemon juice, plus the juice of one lemon • ½ teaspoon lemon zest • 2 large cloves garlic, crushed and finely minced, divided • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh rosemary • Salt and pepper • Flour for dusting • ½ to 1 teaspoon Bomba (Calabrian chili paste) • ½ cup dry white wine • 1 pint grape tomatoes, halved • 4 handfuls baby arugula

DIRECTIONS:

Sautéed Lemon Garlic Branzino with Warm Tomato Salad Over Baby Arugula

C HE F ’S SE LE CT ION | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

1. Season the Branzino fillets generously on both sides. 2. In a glass pie plate, whisk together 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, lemon zest, half the garlic, and rosemary. Add the fillets, turn to coat, and refrigerate for 20 minutes, flipping once. 3. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Remove fillets from marinade and dredge lightly in flour, shaking off excess. 4. Sear fillets skin-side down for 4 minutes or until golden and crisp. Flip and cook another 3 minutes, or until just cooked through. Transfer to a warm platter. 5. In the same pan, add remaining olive oil, then sauté the rest of the garlic and Bomba for 30 seconds. Pour in the wine and simmer until reduced by half. Add tomatoes and heat through. Stir in lemon juice and season to taste. 6. To serve, divide baby arugula among four plates, top with fish, and spoon the warm tomato mixture over. Pour any extra juices from the platter into the pan, swirl, and drizzle over everything. Son of a gun! I promised myself I wouldn’t cry today—but then I pictured the new puppy licking my face… sob, sniff, sniff… whew. I gotta go.

A Community-Centered Beauty Experience THE FLOW SALON: OFFERING CREATIVITY, COMPASSION, AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT THROUGH STYLE.

Tasha Doremus and Winslow

When Tasha Doremus opened The Flow Salon, she wasn’t just building a business — she was realizing a dream shaped by resilience, creativity and a deep sense of community. Rooted in Wyckoff, New Jersey, The Flow Salon has become more than a destination for hair care — it’s a space that celebrates new beginnings. Doremus always knew beauty was her path. Hair and makeup were her favorite things to play with, and as early as age 8, she remembers family members asking her to style their hair or do their makeup. She applied to her local county vocational high school and was accepted into the cosmetology program in 1999, turning that childhood passion into a lifelong career. Her creative journey has spanned both coasts — from her early roots in New Jersey to nearly a decade in California, where she studied architectural interior design in Santa Monica and bartended across Los Angeles County, all while continuing to put her cosmetology skills to use in salons in Calabasas and through freelance work. “I’ve always been drawn to beauty, art and excellence,” Doremus notes. “But more than anything, I’ve always wanted to create a space that feels personal and welcoming — where people feel like they belong.” That vision became a reality in 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, after a layoff from a marketing job the previous fall pushed her back toward her first love: hair. With salons shuttered and uncertainty in the air, she took a leap of faith and launched a mobile salon service. Armed with a passion for her craft and a website co-created with fellow freelance artist Caitie Means Business — whom she met in New York City while studying at the

Academy of Freelance Makeup and participating in the Body of Artists leadership program — Doremus began traveling across North Jersey, cutting and coloring hair in driveways, garages and backyards. “I was rinsing hair in basement slop sinks,” she says with a laugh. “But I loved it. People were so ready to feel like themselves again, and I was happy to be a part of that.” Word-of-mouth spread quickly. Doremus, who had settled in Franklin Lakes, found herself becoming the go-to mobile stylist in the area. But when colder months made outdoor appointments less feasible, she attempted to return to a traditional salon — only to realize that fastpaced, high-volume beauty work wasn’t where she belonged. “I wanted quality over quantity,” she says. “I wanted to use non-toxic products, take my time and focus on the experience.” That’s when fate — and a “for lease” sign — stepped in. With the help of DeFino Real Estate Co., a family-run business with deep roots in the community, Doremus negotiated a fair lease that made it possible to bring her vision to life. As neighbors and longtime supporters of local entrepreneurs, Frank DeFino and his son, Adam DeFino, offered guidance and support that helped her build what would become The Flow Salon. That collaborative spirit inspired the name. “FLOW” is an acronym for Franklin Lakes, Oakland and Wyckoff — the tri-town area Doremus proudly calls home. “It’s a small-town feel with big-city hair,” she shares. “That’s the vibe.” Since opening, The Flow Salon has become more than a beauty business. Locals stop in for coffee, to visit the salon’s two beloved dogs — Winslow and Buzz, lovingly known as the “resident Mi-Kis” — or to enjoy the welcoming ambiance of what Doremus describes as “Steel Magnolias meets New York City with Cali-cool vibes.”

“I had been looking for a meaningful way to give back through the salon — something that aligned with our values and allowed us to pay it forward. The fact that it all came together during Foster Care Month felt like more than coincidence.” - Tasha Doremus

Children from nearby schools stop in just to play with the dogs. Community members gather to catch up. And the salon’s reputation for warm hospitality is rivaled only by its expert services — including the in-demand Qiqi Vega smoothing treatment, designed to combat frizz and humidity, and the FLOW Signature Head Spa Treatment, a luxurious, multi-step service featuring deep scalp cleansing and massage. The Flow Salon was the first to introduce this trending experience to the area, expanding its space in late spring 2024 to include a dedicated spa room and officially add body treatments to its menu. “There’s a reason people say we have the best coffee in town,” Doremus jokes. “Maybe a private label is next — you never know.” She adds, “I’m always looking for ways to collaborate with local artists and entrepreneurs. The FLOW area has a lot to offer.” But behind the polish and charm lies a deeper mission. Doremus, who was once in foster care before being adopted, carries a lifelong commitment to lifting others as she climbs. That personal history recently blossomed into a formal partnership with Comfort Cases, a nonprofit that supports children in the foster care system by providing them with essential supplies in a dignified way. The organization’s mission — “No more trash bags” — is one Doremus relates to on a profound level.

“When foster kids enter a new home with nothing but a trash bag, it sends a message,” she says. “You have to think — these kids are walking into a stranger’s home, often feeling scared or unsure, and the few belongings they may have are in a trash bag. That’s not a good feeling. Comfort Cases gives them something of their own — a backpack filled with toiletries, blankets, school supplies — that says, ‘You matter. You’re cared for.’” The partnership, sparked by Doremus’s client and Comfort Cases representative Aimee Berger, quickly made a meaningful impact. In May — National Foster Care Month — The Flow Salon hosted a giveaway featuring the Qiqi Vega treatment, with all proceeds benefiting local foster children through Comfort Cases. “This cause found me at the perfect time,” Doremus explains. “I had been looking for a meaningful way to give back through the salon — something that aligned with our values and allowed us to pay it forward. The fact that it all came together during Foster Care Month felt like more than coincidence.”

Doremus’s team also reflects her values. From a young stylist who grew up and graduated from the local high school — someone who reminds Doremus of herself at that age — to a therapeutic massage therapist originally from Peru with an infectious passion for wellness, every person in her orbit shares a dedication to their craft and to one another. “These are the people you want to take with you,” she says. “People who want to learn, grow and expand, with the innate skills and heart for this industry. We build each other up. It takes a village, and that’s what we’re creating here.” As The Flow Salon continues to grow, Doremus remains grounded in her mission: to offer more than just beauty services, but a sanctuary — one built on connection, purpose and community pride. “It’s not just a salon,” she shares. “It’s a place where people come to feel good — inside and out.”

Here’s the Scoop! ONE MAN’S ICE CREAM DREAM COME TRUE ARTICLE BY HILARY RUSSO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOMETOWN CREAMERY

Not everyone can say they own the sweetest spot in town. But if you’re Albert Leggieri of Wayne, New Jersey, you absolutely can. Leggieri and his wife Dana opened Hometown Creamery in September 2021 and never looked back. For Leggieri, this wasn’t just an investment opportunity, it was a passion project that had been living rent-free in his mind for close to two decades. “I had been thinking about opening an ice cream shop for over 15 years. When my son Luca was born in 2020, I made a decision to go for it,” says the proud father of two. That decision turned into the start of something truly special in the Wayne community. By the fall of 2021, Hometown Creamery opened its doors and started scooping joy by the cone. The following year, they expanded to a second location in North Haledon, proving that their sweet success wasn’t just beginner’s luck, it was the real (ice) cream of the crop. Six days a week, the team at Hometown Creamery whips up small, fresh batches of their handmade ice cream. With over 30 flavors on the menu, including fan favorites like Coffee Oreo, Cannoli, and a Bailey’s or Kahlúa Fudge with a grown-up kick, there’s truly something for everyone. Leggieri's personal favorite? Oatmeal Raisin Cookie. It’s a nostalgic nod to the cookie jar, only colder and creamier. Fresh baked cookies are available too. For those with dietary restrictions, Hometown Creamery doesn’t leave anyone out in the cold. The shop offers a variety of sugar-free, gluten-free and vegan flavors that are just as decadent and creamy as their

dairy-rich counterparts. From classic staples to seasonal surprises, this place is designed for indecisive ice cream lovers who want to try it all. But the secret ingredient at Hometown Creamery isn’t just the ice cream—it’s the people. “Happiness is homemade,” Leggieri says, and that’s more than a tagline. It’s a guiding principle. Leggieri and Dana are both lifelong residents of Wayne, and they’ve built a business that reflects their love of community. The Creamery’s tightknit staff is made up of friends and family. These are people who greet you with a warm smile and a generous scoop. Whether you’re a first-timer or a regular, you’re treated like one of their own. That homemade, heartfelt touch extends to the shop’s design as well. Leveraging his background in building and remodeling, Leggieri designed both locations himself. The counters are crafted from reclaimed wood, giving each space a rustic charm that feels less like a business and more like a warm welcome home. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot the Leggieris’ fully restored, red 1959 Chevy Apache pickup truck parked outside, a beloved mascot that adds a cherry-ontop kind of character to the brand.

But Leggieri and Dana’s vision goes beyond the brick-andmortar shops. Hometown Creamery also hits the road with a custom-designed kiosk and a mobile ice cream truck available for events. Birthdays, weddings, block parties, you name it. They bring the scoops and the smiles, making every celebration a little sweeter. And let’s face it, ice cream has always been more than dessert. It’s a feel-good food that hits the emotional sweet spot. One lick can bring you back to childhood, offer comfort after a long day, or turn a moment into a memory. At Hometown Creamery, those small joys are handcrafted daily, because emotional wellness can be found in the little things, like sprinkles, smiles, and sharing a cone with someone you love. In just a few short years, Hometown Creamery has become more than just an ice cream shop. It’s a place where neighbors gather, where kids make memories, and where every cone is served with a side of nostalgia. It’s about family, flavor, and a whole lot of heart. So next time you’re in Wayne or North Haledon, swing by Hometown Creamery. Whether you’re craving something cold, sweet, or simply a little bit of kindness, Leggieri and Dana and the entire staff have just the scoop for you.
