THE LADIES ISSUE

World Class Women

Each May we focus on the women of Queen Creek, and every time we find ourselves amazed with the talented, hard-working, and humble ladies that make up our friends and neighbors. By saying 'amazed' let me clarify that we are not surprised by the collection of incredible women in town. Instead, we find their focus, heart, and drive an inspiring and wonderful addition to Queen Creek.

These women bring an arsenal of skills and talents to whatever they do. Not only that, but they share the spotlight with other women, achieving even more together. I am so grateful for the women in my own life: my mother, my older sister, my sisters-in-law, and my nieces. They have all been there for me with a ready ear and a hug. Surrounded by such examples, it gives me the belief and the encouragement to see such qualities come to the fore in my own two daughters.

Similarly, the women of Queen Creek take the lead, carving a path for others to follow. Whether they know it or not, their contribution makes this town a better one. In this issue we wanted to highlight just a few of those women who are creating communities, championing causes, cultivating networks, and raising awareness wherever they go.

You can search the world for incredible, awe-inspiring women, or you can flip through these pages and realize they are closer than you think.

The TRT Spot

Why settle when you can be your best self?

We all lead busy lives and feeling tired, lacking energy, and losing strength might feel a natural decline of both age and lifestyle demands. Yet nurse practitioner and owner of The TRT Spot, Makenna Montgomery, says it doesn’t have to be that way. If your fatigue persists, or brain fog never seems to fade, your issues might be hormonal. Makenna, along with nurse Richard Smith, say that too many people are told that this is normal and nothing can be done. ‘We need to redefine what aging looks like.’ says Makenna.

Women in particular, who face the symptoms of post pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause, are often left feeling that the downhill trend is just to be expected. Makenna says that after ten years working in hormone replacement and the last six years as a nurse practitioner, that she felt a calling to be more ‘hands on and intentional in all aspects of patient care’. Makenna says that women don’t necessarily have to wait for something to start to go wrong either, she says ‘we can always do something better.’

Makenna says she deals with ‘all ages, all types, all activity levels’ and that those who come into her office are treated not merely as patients, but as family. ‘We are not looking purely at the physical but at the full picture.’  she says. That full picture begins with blood work done in office and all aspects of health are considered. ‘We are not a typical provider, we don’t put a bandaid on things - we get to the root of the problem.’

The more individualized approach means you are aiming for the best version of you, rather than what is ‘normal’ for most women. The range of average is quite deceptive, explains Makenna, as this doesn’t mean you are optimizing your health. Makenna adds that these days we have more information, more options, and more treatments than ever before. Meaning, that not only can a plan be more tailored to the person but also be more affordable as well.

‘We don’t give you more than you need, we don’t upsell you.’ says Richard. Makenna chimes in stating, ‘we keep it affordable and realistic.’ At The TRT Spot, Makenna and Richard seek to create a balance and fine tuning of hormones that when managed appropriately have no side effects. In addition to hormone treatments they provide vitamin therapy, peptides, supplements, and medically managed weight loss treatments.

Makenna says it is amazing how disruptive to life a degradation in mental clarity, sleep, libido, and stress can

be. She has seen patients not only enhance every area of their health but in their life too. In some cases, patients have seen improvement at their job and even in their marriages. ‘We get a baseline and then we aim for as close to the best we can get them to.’ says Makenna.

To have such a variety of options and treatments within reach and the possibility of achieving our best self, why wouldn’t anyone go for it? The TRT Spot is located inside Lavish Studios in suite #27.

THE Gillette GROUP

An all women team sells luxury homes without the drama.

Standing in the vast gourmet kitchen of a 16 million dollar property in Queen Creek, it would not surprise you to know that this is no ordinary space. The 28 foot high ceilings with impressive wood beams draws your eye upwards in a style that seems to take inspiration from a cathedral. There are at least three large kitchen islands, a grand piano in one corner and an elevator in the other... and that is just one room.

Shannon Gillette, team leader of the Gillette Real Estate Group, is filming for a tv show alongside her team at  this unique property which boasts a basement with a bowling alley, wine cellar, golf simulator, and movie theatre. There is also a large pool, sand volleyball court, and a hangar for your airplane too. Nothing is done on a small scale here or without careful attention to detail and elevating the idea of ‘staying in’.

The spanish colonial style property named Misión Veintidós (Mission Twenty-Two), will be the most expensive sale in Queen Creek’s history. Properties like these are what the Gillette Group specialize in, and they are on track to sell 300 homes in the last year in the luxury market. Such an achievement is no small feat

and Shannon has a devoted team of realtors to get the job done. Her team is made up of 11 highly experienced agents who were each hired according to the Gillette Group’s rigorous selection process. They also happen to be an all women team.

Now the Gillette Group will be featured in a televised program titled Selling Arizona airing on national TV in late Spring of 2026. The show will follow the ups and downs of their experiences in Arizona real estate. However, if you expect some of that drama to be in-fighting and gossip between the women, think again. ‘We are always trying to help each other and grow.’ says Amy Pender one of the agents. Another agent, Nilda Pizarro-Rodriguez added ‘we learn from each other.’ Katie Eaton says that the group’s dynamic is why she joined the team.

Being in the midst of this group of women, the bonds and the supportive climate is palpable. The conversation flows, the laughs come often, and many check in with each other on topics of work, family, and life. ‘This team is such a unique unicorn - they all truly want to serve people and help. We’re always looking for people with a servant’s heart.’ says fellow agent Shawna Garvin.

“We make sure our team never misses a sporting event, we all help each other out and family comes first.”

The culture, spear-headed by Shannon, is about rejecting the impulse to gossip or complain. Julie Clarke, another realtor on the team, says ‘We put the face out to the world that we want to see and this sets us apart in the industry.’

So will  Selling Arizona have any drama for the viewer at all? Shannon says that the drama is in the everyday challenge of real estate. ‘We are putting fires out all day, a buyer can cancel last minute, and we deal with some hard emotions.’ Being in front of the camera is not new to Shannon, as she has already been featured on HGTV in a show called American Dream which focuses on lifestyle and real estate.

Shannon also believes in the power of storytelling and this is something she uses heavily in her work too. The Gillette Group utilizes cinematic video production not only to showcase a home and its features, but the community, the schools, parks, and the lifestyle that comes with the area you have invested in. This approach has been successful, with their YouTube channel with listing videos has thousands of views and their Instagram has 2 million impressions and 100K followers.

Keeping up with the times and tastes of the era is certainly key, and while the use of innovative marketing has been helpful, the Gillette Group knows it still comes down to the people. Between them, the women counted they had 34 kids in total. Therefore, the importance of family is not only about respecting the juggling act of these working women, but also to bring their families into that culture too. ‘We make sure our team never misses a sporting event, we all help each other out and family comes first.’ says Shannon, who personally practices ‘Family Fridays’ which is when all phones are put away and they spend quality focused family time.

They also have ‘Gillette Group Kids’ in which all the children of both the team and the clients are welcome to their many events throughout the year. In March for example, they had a fun Easter egg hunt with prizes that included a stay at Wolf Lodge. Although there is clearly a lot of hard work in what they do, they also know how to have fun and still put faith and family at the center of it all.

Grit and Grace

SARAH BETH HERMAN IS A STUDY IN RESILIENCE.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY HOLD FAST VISUALS

Sarah Beth Herman
Sarah Beth with her dogs Max and Alphy

It’s nine o’clock on a random Thursday morning and Sarah Beth Herman MBA is the focus of a high-energy photo shoot. It’s a scene of controlled chaos - a far cry from the un-contained chaos and confusion she stepped into at her first job at a dental office when she was just 17 years old.

“I very, very vividly remember there were no computers,” she says with a laugh, “this was like a very old school dental practice, and I was really just going to help file charts. And I remember walking into this back room, and literally, if you think of what chaos looks like in an office where there’s stacks of charts and stacks of papers and a desk you cannot see the top of, that’s literally what it was like going in there.”

Today, as the CEO of Dentistry Support®️ , she isn’t just filing charts and insurance claims; she’s leading the number one virtual administrative dental team in the world, managing a global workforce that spans nine countries and serves all 50 states.

Sarah Beth’s trajectory is a masterclass in grit and grace, having navigated the kind of rock-bottom moments that break most people. She sent every paycheck from that first dental office job to her mom, who was living in Colorado.

“So at the time, I was actually working three jobs,” she recalls, “ I was in high school and I was in cosmetology school at the same time.” Her journey included periods of homelessness and a cross-country move. Later, after moving to Arizona, she and her husband lost their entire life savings to a business scam. With ten cents left in their bank account, she started over, using her cosmetology license to find clients before a dental practice in Gilbert hired her through a Craigslist ad. Her career accelerated quickly. Within weeks of joining LinkedIn, she was recruited as a regional director over

32 practices. A few years later, she moved to California to become the chief of training and talent development for dental practices. She then went on to become chief of teasing and talent development for a 45 practice DSO in Beverly Hills.

Seven months later, in 2017, she would once again find herself without a job. She decided to make it her moment. She’d seen firsthand that the dental industry had high front-office turnover. So she poured her two weeks’ severance pay and more than a decade of experience into what would become Dentistry Support®️ .

“My goal was to reduce the amount of money dentists were paying to hire people. And I wanted dentistry to be better.”

Under her guidance, Dentistry Support ®️ is a revolutionized model of remote excellence, proving that distance is no barrier to excellence. Her company was recently recognized with the Better Business Bureau’s  2025 Torch Award for Ethics for its commitment to integrity and client care.

“Winning this award was like everything for me, because I literally built this company, blood, sweat and tears, not sleeping,” she says.

With her inherent grit, grace and grind, Sarah Beth continues to build her brand’s portfolio to include Dentistry Support Academy®️  and Sarah Beth Herman®️  LLC. She also created the number one podcast in the dentistry space. Reaching 40,000 listeners,  No Silver Spoons®️  celebrates success through hard work, offers candid advice, and inspiring life stories.

“My single most important mission in life is to leave those around me better than I found them.”

Cedar Lane Salon

At Cedar Lane Salon, the focus has always been on customized results and genuine connection. Our team of talented stylists specializes in dimensional color, soft blonding, natural brunettes, and expertly crafted extension blends that enhance fullness and length while protecting the integrity of your natural hair.

Beautiful hair doesn’t happen by accident — it’s a combination of professional care, daily habits, and choosing the right products for your hair type.

Here are our expert-backed tips to keep your hair looking its best between appointments.

PRIORITIZE SCALP HEALTH

Healthy hair starts at the scalp. Just like skincare, your scalp benefits from regular cleansing and occasional exfoliation. Avoid excessive dry shampoo buildup and incorporate a clarifying wash when needed to remove product and mineral deposits.

WASH YOUR HAIR MORE THAN YOU THINK

One of the biggest myths circulating right now is that washing your hair less automatically makes it healthier. In reality, many women today are not washing their hair enough — especially in Arizona’s climate.

Sweat, oil, dry shampoo, styling products, and environmental debris build up quickly. When the scalp stays congested, it can lead to irritation, dullness, breakage, and even thinning over time. A clean scalp is the foundation for strong, healthy growth. For most women, washing every 2–3 days is ideal.

ALWAYS USE HEAT PROTECTION

Before blow-drying or using hot tools, apply a thermal protectant. Heat damage is one of the most common causes of breakage and dullness. This includes heat from the sun! Similar to your skin, your hair needs UV Protection as well. Protecting your hair from high temperatures preserves shine and elasticity.

SCHEDULE REGULAR GLOSSES

Gloss treatments refresh tone, add shine, and seal the cuticle — making your hair look healthier instantly. Our hair naturally sits between a pH of 4.5 and 5.5. Color and other environmental factors tend to shift our hair more toward the alkaline end of the spectrum, making our hair more brittle and causing the color to fade. A gloss however is acidic which brings your hair back to its natural pH.

HYDRATE FROM WITHIN

Water intake and balanced nutrition play a significant role in hair health. Protein, iron, and healthy fats support strength and shine.

In The Pursuit of Health

DR. KRIS BERKNER HAS PAVED HER OWN UNIQUE PATH.

‘The desire to be a doctor was always there.’ says Dr. Kris Berkner, sitting in her office at Queen Creek Naturopathic. Kris says she was always drawn to medicine since she was little, although her path was not a direct one. She was raised by parents that she describes as ‘two very smart business oriented people’ who encouraged each of their children to explore their own paths in life. Having this mentality in mind, Kris was initially inspired to pursue an agriculture degree because of her love of animals and her grandfather who was a dairyman.

At 29 she shifted her focus and became the first licensed massage therapist in Queen Creek. She worked with clients for ten years before she made the decision to get her degree in naturopathic medicine. The transition was a natural one since it still played upon the themes of health and wellness. Kris took on her studies when she was a married mother of five young boys. Her commitment meant an hour commute to Tempe and schooling that could take up to forty plus hours a week.

When asked how she managed to juggle all the demands, Kris answered, ‘Everyone had to work together.’ Her sons were aged 5 to 17 at the time, and she admits it was a challenge for the whole family. Kris says that her husband, who is a teacher, was very supportive. Although this period of her life meant minimal sleep, Kris insists that her background as a dairyman and even motherhood prepared her for the grueling work of medical school.

Kris says that ‘the fear of failure’ was what drove her. She graduated four years later in 2009 and began her clinic part time as well as working with patients battling addiction. Kris says the work was very rewarding and that the opportunity to help people rebuild their lives was something she truly loved to do.

Today Kris works full time at her clinic in Queen Creek. The naturopathic approach, says Kris, is a chance for her to work with her patients long term, looking at the whole person, and not going for the quick fix. Kris says this gives her more ‘freedom’ as a doctor to give her patients more attention, more time, and a wider choice of therapies. She provides hormone therapies along with regenerative injection treatments for both men and women.

If you got the impression that Kris is all work and no play, she definitely has a full life away from the office too. In her free time, Kris enjoys her family which now includes five grandkids and one more on the way. She also loves to fix things around the house she shares with her husband and several animals on an acre property they have owned for the last 30 years. This summer she and her husband plan to travel to Scotland and even hike Kerry Way in Ireland, a 140 mile trek. In a season of life where most choose to slow down, Kris continues to embrace momentum and lean in, enjoying each day to its fullest.

“The naturopathic approach, says Kris, is a chance for her to work with her patients long term, looking at the whole person, and not going for the quick fix.”

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s , she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.

“Trust is the only metric that actually compounds.”

LEADING with PURPOSE

Jen Hilderbrand is expanding access to mental health care, one connection at a time.

For Jen Hilderbrand, the path to service did not begin with a single moment, but with a quiet shift in perspective. When her son joined the Army, pride was paired with a deeper understanding of what that commitment carries. As an Arizona native and mother of four, it sharpened her awareness of the sacrifices made not only by service members, but by the families who stand beside them.

That perspective became the foundation for her work as board president of The Hope Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to mental health care. The mission is simple but urgent: bridge the gap for individuals and families who need therapy but cannot afford it.

“The need was right here in our community,” Hilderbrand says. “Therapy can be life-changing, but access is often limited by financial barriers. We want to make sure people can get the help they need.”

Her work moves fluidly between the practical and the personal. On any given day, Hilderbrand may be reviewing applications, connecting individuals with therapists or cultivating relationships with donors and community partners. She also leads fundraising and events, with the goal of expanding access to care in ways that feel both immediate and enduring.

What stays with her most are the stories that reveal the ripple effect of that support. She recalls one veteran who shared

that therapy helped him reconnect with his family after years of feeling distant. “He said it gave him the tools not just to cope, but to truly be present again,” she says. “That reminder, that healing impacts families, is something I carry with me every day.”

Hilderbrand also leads Ruck 4 Freedom, a community event that brings people together in support of veterans and first responders while raising funds for mental health services. What began as a personal expression of gratitude has grown into a shared experience rooted in purpose and connection.

As a leader, she approaches the work with consistency and intention, placing value on listening, creating space and showing up alongside the people she serves.

“Leadership is less about having all the answers and more about showing up with heart and purpose,” she says. “Real impact happens when people come together with a shared mission and a willingness to serve.”

Looking ahead, Hilderbrand hopes to expand the foundation’s reach, strengthen partnerships, and build sustainable support so more individuals and families can access care.
