Happy Trails
July 2025 PUBLISHER
Brad Schnepf | brad.schnepf@citylifestyle.com
There are many exotic places and far flung locations that call us to explore. Yet how many of us have played tourist right here at home? Allow us then to reintroduce you to your home state of Arizona. We asked a few photographers and adventurers to document some of the places they have ventured. It turns out there are quite a few escapades to be had right in our own backyard. The sights, entertainment, and experiences in state forty-eight are too numerous to count. Therefore we chose to highlight just a few favorites and entice you to explore them if you haven't already. They might not stamp your passport, and yet we think you will agree that they will add to your memories. In addition, we appeal to your tastebuds with delicious recipe ideas from Queen Creek Olive Mill and Sage and Barrel to try in your kitchen. Plus, what would summer be without a good book? I make a few literary suggestions for you to take to the beach. Did I mention there is a sandy white beach within easy access of Queen Creek? You may want to check out that article and find out more.

Revel Surf is located in the center of “the intersection of lifestyle and adrenaline.” These sound like amazing cross streets but before you start searching on your GPS, we’re talking about Cannon Beach. Cannon Beach is Mesa’s brand new premier destination offering beach front vibes, waves,
“Revel Surf isn’t your typical wave pool that you’ll find at hotel resorts or water parks.” food and shopping. This is just the beginning of services offered at Cannon Beach, there is a lot more coming soon. “We’re putting Mesa on the global surf map,” says Adam Saks, who is the COO of Cannon Beach. Adam’s words ring true when considering everything that encompasses Revel Surf. The entire design is catered to everybody, including families. Between the hotels, health and wellness shops, and dining options there is something for everybody to enjoy. Did we mention there is also a skatepark? It all started with a dunk—that’s how the idea of Revel Surf came to life. Cole Cannon and Matt Gunn were playing some ball (Matt can’t dunk but can hit
the rim) when they decided to put their expertise and resources together to bring water recreation to Mesa, Arizona. Cole, who owned the land and was unsure of what to do with it. Matt, who was familiar with wave technology. Revel Surf isn’t your typical wave pool that you’ll find at hotel resorts or water parks. Matt has been working on wave technology for well over a decade. He started working on his first wave in his backyard pool. “Can I make the right wave in a pool?” is the question that drove Matt to work on the technology. He made his first successful wave in 2010. It became about growing the model from there, bringing in Jim Bushy to help with the technology. CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/Q UE E N C R E E K

Shane Beschen, professional surfer and former #2 in the world, is the Creative Director for Cannon Beach. His expertise as a professional surfer was helpful in developing the technology as well. Shane comes from a family culture of surfing. Shane’s own father is still surfing, at the age of 74. Surfing knows no age limits, just requires the respect of the water and nature. It has been ingrained into his family and he is carrying on the legacy with his own sons surfing too. Surf culture is more than just hopping on a board and hitting the waves. Surf culture seeps into entertainment, music, and fashion. Anybody who remembers the 2000’s will probably remember the Billabong or Roxy t-shirt they wore, even if you did live in a landlocked state. “Oceans teach us lessons,” Shane says. “You quickly realize that you are not the boss.” It’s a sentiment Matt and Cole also share as well. Revel Surf is the first of its kind but building it didn’t come easy. “You never know what it is going to do until you build it.” You can hypothesize and create models of the surf pool but those are all theories until you put the water in. Turns out, water will go where it wants to go.

“Revel Surf is a judgement-free zone and whether you want to enjoy the beach, want to learn to surf and try to learn a new skill, or you are a seasoned surfer, all are welcome.”
It has been an entire team effort to bring Revel Surf to life, and in that effort there were high highs and low lows. The surf itself has a “playlist” of waves, each wave varying in multiple ways to create experiences for beginner and advanced surfers. There’s even an ambiance wave, moving water changes the feeling. On top of the main surf pool, there is a standalone wave for those who desire lessons to learn how to surf. The surf is an addition to the beach, not a distraction. Revel Surf is first and foremost a beach, including sand and shallow water for littles. There is Revel Rocks,
where you have cliff diving from six feet to twenty-five feet. There are incredible food and cocktail options, making going to the beach easier than ever before. “I want to make the broke feel rich,” Cole says. “The goal is to empower people of all skills, ages, and abilities.” Revel Surf is a judgement-free zone and whether you want to enjoy the beach, want to learn to surf and try to learn a new skill, or you are a seasoned surfer, all are welcome. You’ll want to stay awhile with all the water recreation options and the incredible food and cocktails available to enjoy. JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/Q UE E N C R E E K

DESERT DAYS AND COWGIRL WEEKENDS ESCAPE TO THE DESERT.
Elle and Max Dewitt

O UT D OOR A DV E N T U R E | LOCAL SE RVICE S
“It’s right in our backyard, but it feels like a world away.” — ELLE DEWITT
For Max and Elle Dewitt, Ride Out Ranch started as a remote family getaway in Florence, Arizona, and has transformed into a soulful desert escape for horse lovers, adventurers, and those needing to unplug from the noise of everyday life. “When we first bought the land, my dad kind of had a doomsday mindset,” Max laughs. “But the zombie apocalypse never came.” Instead, the land became something much more meaningful: A place where holidays were spent riding through open desert trails and reconnecting around the campfire. Max’s father had a way of welcoming everyone, often inviting friends to join in the rugged beauty of desert life. And soon, those friends began to nudge the family toward something more. “They kept telling us we needed to turn it into a campground,” Elle recalls. “So in 2020, we spent most of the year building and updating the space so we could share it with others.” The turning point came in November of that year with an event they called the Good Ol’ Cowgirl Weekend. Forty women arrived with horses in tow for a weekend of trail rides, games, and catered meals under the stars. It was a celebration of grit, grace, and the grounding magic of the Arizona desert. “That weekend was really special,” Max shares. “It was one of the last times our whole family worked and played together before my dad passed away in December.” Today, the ranch continues to evolve, carrying on the family’s legacy of hospitality and wide-open freedom. New additions include cozy accommodations and thoughtful touches like a “hideout spa” complete with twin clawfoot tubs and a view that stretches west toward the sunset. For the Dewitts, the mission is simple: create a space where people can slow down and truly feel connected to the land. “You can’t help but notice how unique and special this place is,” says Elle. “It’s right in our backyard, but it feels like a world away.” www.rideoutranch.com

Tlaquepaque The Chapel
A SMALL SLICE OF ANOTHER TIME NESTLED IN SEDONA. ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY FLORENCE DANIELS
28
R OA D T R IP | ARTS + C ULT U RE
Walking around Tlaquepaque (pronounced Tla-Kay-Pa-Kee), you feel as though you have discovered a secluded place from another time. The name itself means 'best of everything', and the beautiful surroundings certainly live up to it. The splashing of fountains, the ivy covered balconies, the old columns, and mature trees casting dappled sunlight upon the cobblestones all create a world unto itself, right in the middle of Sedona. The developer, Abe Miller, began work in the seventies and was inspired by the creative art scene of Mexico. The walkways lead you further on to discover another charming courtyard or trailing vines and a staircase with colorful tiles. There are restaurants, shops, and even Spanish guitar performed beneath the trees, accompanied by Flamenco dancing in the summer. Yet this is not a mere shopping center, instead they call it an arts and shopping village. Tlaquepaque was always meant to be anchored in art and artists. The space itself is a work of art.
The architecture is organic, defying symmetrical lines. Some pathways take you through a short tunnel, others lead to charming shop fronts, everywhere awash with colorful flowers and towering sycamore trees. In fact, the land used to be a sycamore grove. The developer promised the land owner to build around the trees that stand there still, providing shade and beauty. An old world chapel there has hosted several weddings, but also serves as a place of reflection and repose. The liveliness of Tlaquepaque with its shops and music, also encourages visitors to sit and observe the nature and the Spanish Colonial architecture that surrounds them. Many of the iron works, lanterns, carvings and other touches were brought over from Mexico to provide an authentic feel. Tlaquepaque certainly has the ability to sweep you away to a Spanish dream, making it a destination in Arizona. www.tlaq.com

E X PL OR E T H E Cl a s s i c s THIS SUM MER Outside of required reading for school, many of us may leave the classics behind. Here is your invitation to revisit or perhaps introduce yourself to the very best of literature. This selection covers romance, adventure, mystery, and more.
PERSUASION Jane Austen Austen is at the height of her powers when she describes the pain of a past mistake haunting her heroine, Anne Elliot. Can she find happiness or is her life destined to be one of regret?
THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO
DID YOU KNOW?
Alexandre Dumas Possibly the greatest story of revenge of all time. Framed for a crime he did not commit, Edmond Dantes goes to prison for many years. After an impossible escape that almost kills him, Edmond hunts down those responsible, one by one.
Studies have actually shown that reading the classics can actually improve focus and increase your attention span. Apparently, MRIs done on subjects while reading classical literature showed increased blood flow to areas of the brain responsible for 'executive function'. In other words, it enhanced complex and critical thinking. Therefore, reading the classics is like a brain boost.
THE YOUNG LIONS Irwin Shaw This story follows three soldiers during World War II. One American, one Jew, and one Austrian as they each experience their own war, changing them forever until they meet on the battlefield.
REBECCA Daphne du Maurier A young newlywed is haunted by the memory of her husband’s deceased first wife and it threatens to destroy both her marriage and her sanity.
