LIFESTYLE LETTER
Lasting Resolutions How many times have you heard the phrase 'a new you'? The start of January signals the hope that by instilling new habits you will transform into a different self, an improved version. However, the theme of this issue may actually be to 'just be you'. Instead of overhauling everything, rather lean into who you are. While we all have room for improvement, perhaps the secret is not to work against the grain of your personality but to actually work alongside it. Sounds a bit strange, doesn't it. However, instead of witholding every treat and joy there is to be had in life, simply adjust when and how much. Instead of creating an ambitious fitness plan, create something more modest but achievable long term. Small but consistent shifts could be what results in measurable gains that are sustainable. In this issue, we talk about how you can make your nutrition and fitness less overwhelming. We touch on other subjects that affect your health like sleep, hair and the health of your scalp. We also talk about the benefits of Elderberry for your immune system and treatments for your skin to uncover your natural glow. We hope this issue finds you healthy in both body and mind, but if you should need some inspiration or insight into reaching the healthiest version of you, we just might have what you are looking for.

BEE You Healthy hair care starts with quality ingredients. ARTICLE BY FLORENCE DANIELS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY BLAKE
Ed Weller and Terrence Vyfhuis noticed that their clientele came into their barber shop complaining of scalp and hair issues. The usual products were not enough to combat the dry Arizona heat, the harsh water running in our pipes, and the dryness of the desert. In addition, Terrence became concerned with the ingredients in many hair products that weren’t even easy to pronounce, much less recognizable. In light of his wife’s breast cancer diagnosis, he became even more certain about the importance of being mindful of what we were putting on our hair and skin. Ed, whose parents are originally from Sierra Leone, began to research sourcing ingredients like shea butter directly from the country. The result was the start of their hair care line called Bee You. After plenty of research and testing they combined whole ingredients like aloe vera, lemongrass, citrus oil, and shea butter to create healthy and original products to combat dryness and breakage. Originally, from Maryland and the son of immigrants, Ed earned a BA in Exercise Science and always had an interest in health and wellness. Terrence hails from Chicago and has a degree in Engineering but also served in the navy for 10 years. Both men eventually got their barber license in Arizona, and for the last 13 years, Terrence is the owner of The Cut Barbershop in Tempe.

The Bee You line includes the Summer Rain Mister which Terrence says is perfect start the day with for the light, bright scent of citrus. The mister provides hydration for the scalp, hair, and even your face. Their pomade is a two in one product that helps control waves and smoothes out facial hair. Finally their Beard Oil traps in moisture and promotes even and healthy beard growth. Wellness starts from the head down, and local business owners like Ed and Terrence understand the importance of having healthy hair and skin. www.thebeeyoulook.com Instagram: thebeeyoulook JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . THE ELDERBERRY LADY
ARTICLE BY BREANNA VEGA
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNY KAUFMAN
Keep your family healthy with one simple habit.
Wellness in a world of convenience is something that requires planning, thoughtfulness, and prevention. Fortunately for us Queen Creek locals, we have The Elderberry Lady. Enter Heather Churney, a Queen Creek resident, and FDA licensed and approved owner of The Elderberry Lady, a company specializing in homemade Elderberry Syrup, tincture, teas, gummies, and DIY home kit production. Started in 2017, Heather and her husband Rob, decided to quite literally “pour” into the dream of helping others keep their immune systems at top notch operation. Being people of faith with give back initiatives and a couple who always leaned into natural remedies, Heather cracked into researching and developing Elderberry Syrup. Three years later, just before the pandemic hit, Heather’s family suffered a job loss, and decided to make their mess into their message. Having four kids of their own and witnessing the beneficial effects of the syrup improving sickness and even preventing it, they went all in after word on the street gained traction and decided to make things official, going through the process of licensing and FDA approval. Owner, Heather Churney

According to The Journal of Functional Foods, a 2015 study found supporting evidence that Elderberry is not only an antioxidant, but can help prevent and lessen respiratory, cold, and flu-like symptoms. Some laboratory data showed that elderberry extracts can inhibit influenza A/B viruses and reduce certain pro-inflammatory cytokines as well as showing elderberry is rich in anthocyanins, flavonoids, and other polyphenols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. Aside from scientific data, Heather’s client reviews truly speak for themselves.
Some clients noting “its amazing taste” and ability to get their families through cold and flu seasons, as well as helping others “never take a day off” when starting to feel down and out - implementing the tincture right away. Easy to reach and even easier to obtain, The Elderberry Lady products can be found porch side for local pickup, at local markets, and are featured in over 14 locations around the valley in various stores. Elderberry products that Heather offers are her famous syrups, tinctures, teas, gummies, and now take-home elderberry syrup kits. It’s clear that we need to make room in our medicine cabinet for some Elderberry Lady syrup and merge convenience with wellness. www.elderberryladyaz.com

“STRENGTH TRAINING IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL INVESTMENTS YOU CAN MAKE IN YOUR LONGTERM HEALTH.”
UNDERSTANDING MACRO NUTRITION
When it comes to transforming your health, macros — protein, carbohydrates, and fats — are your foundation. I know what you’re thinking: What is a macro?. Unlike fad diets that focus on restriction, macro-balanced eating provides your body with the fuel it needs to perform, recover, and thrive. Protein, the most important macronutrient, supports muscle repair, keeps you more full, and is our best fat burner and muscle gainer. Carbohydrates are your body’s preferred energy source, powering your every day movement from strength training to activities of daily living. Healthy fats support our hormone health, brain function, and long-term energy. Macro tracking or simply becoming more aware of your food intake helps you make intentional choices rather than guessing your way through meals. When your plate reflects the right balance of macros, you’ll notice better energy, improved workout performance, and more sustainable progress. As a macro nutrition coach, I set custom macro numbers for my clients which are based off of their goals, lifestyle, hormones, and activity level. Macro tracking isn’t about “eating perfectly” — it’s about eating with a purpose. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/Q UE E N C R E E K

“MACRO TRACKING... YOUR FOOD INTAKE HELPS YOU MAKE INTENTIONAL CHOICES RATHER THAN GUESSING YOUR WAY THROUGH MEALS. WHEN YOUR PLATE REFLECTS THE RIGHT BALANCE OF MACROS, YOU’LL NOTICE BETTER ENERGY, IMPROVED WORKOUT PERFORMANCE, AND MORE SUSTAINABLE PROGRESS.” THE IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTH TRAINING & EXERCISE
A body in motion, stays in motion. Strength training is one of the most powerful investments you can make in your long-term health. Lifting weights improves bone density, boosts metabolism, and increases functional strength — preventing injury and promoting longevity. As we age, muscle naturally decreases, but strength training slows and reverses this process. A consistent training routine combined with mobility will enhance your quality of life and help get you to your aesthetic goals over time. You do not need to spend hours in the gym. Cardio, fad diets, weight loss injections, and supplements may offer quick fixes, but they fail to build sustainable habits, long-term strength, or a healthy metabolism, making them unreliable paths to lasting results. Even just two or three structured sessions per week can transform your body composition and confidence coupled with macro tracking.
WHY INVESTING IN A FITNESS COACH MATTERS
Starting a fitness journey can feel overwhelming — knowing what to eat, which workouts to follow, how to stay

consistent, and how to avoid injury. That’s where a fitness coach becomes invaluable. A great coach provides structure, accountability, and education. My programming for both workouts and macro nutrition are customized to my clients — it is not a one size fits all. I help you set realistic goals, build a personalized plan, and stay committed when motivation fades. Instead of feeling alone, you have guidance and support. As a coach, I can see what you can’t: mindset blocks, habits, movement patterns and strengths. Investing in a coach isn’t just about workouts, it’s about elevating your entire lifestyle. “A river cuts through rock, not because of it’s strength — but because of it’s consistency.” Katie Jeffers is the owner of Body By Katie LLC, head trainer at My Way Fitness and licensed Physical Therapist Asst. Where Beauty Meets Purpose Inside Skinfinity Medspa, where personalized care, community and expert treatments come together to restore confidence. When Shannon Vail, owner and founder of Skinfinity Medspa, speaks about her experience in the field of aesthetics, her enthusiasm is clear to see. Having spent close to 15 years in medical aesthetics, Shannon has created something much bigger than a company, she’s created a haven of self-healing, restoration, and transformation in the heart of the city. “I was in love with aesthetics from the beginning,” Shannon says. “Getting people to feel good about themselves, not just on the outside but inside as well, is such a fulfilling thing. What we offer at Skinfinity is the best of both worlds: pampering and realistic outcomes.”
Raised and born in Fargo, North Dakota, Shannon moved to Arizona nearly 13 years ago with her husband. Having built a life and family, now a proud mom of three, Shannon went on to advance her career, eventually taking the leap to build her own medspa. “I’ve always had a heart for leading and teaching,” she says. “Opening Skinfinity gave me a chance to do that in a way that aligned with my beliefs, leading with patience, grace, and openness.” That dream expanded when Shannon partnered with Angelyn Wolforth, a lifelong friend with extensive business administration and finance experience. The two

wives, mothers, and dog moms pooled their complementary talents to form a powerhouse partnership. Skinfinity is not your typical medspa. It’s a highend aesthetic and wellness center offering a full array of services from specially tailored facials and laser treatments to injectables, chemical peels, body contouring, and wellness treatments. Every service is done in a very clean, and friendly environment by all-female, locally owned therapists who have accumulated more than 45 years of combined experience. As the seasons change, so should your skincare. Shannon offers her top five expert tips to keep your skin looking its best during the colder months:
ADD HYDRATION:
With drier air, it’s imperative to boost your moisturizer. Look for hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or squalane to lock in moisture.
DON’T SKIP SPF:
Even in winter, and especially in Arizona, you’re still exposed to UV rays and blue light. Daily sunscreen is non-negotiable.
EXFOLIATE CONSISTENTLY:
Incorporate exfoliants like retinol and AHAs to keep skin fresh and encourage cell turnover.
SHOW LOVE TO LIPS AND EYES:
Use a nourishing balm and hydrating eye cream. These areas are delicate and prone to dryness.
VISIT YOUR AESTHETICIAN:
Fall and winter are perfect seasons for corrective treatments. It’s also a good time for hydrating facials to maintain your glow. Skinfinity even offers complimentary consultations to create at-home routines tailored to individual needs. Whether you require a moment of relief, a long-term solution for your skin, or simply a space where you feel uplifted, Skinfinity is not just a medspa. It’s home for your skin, your soul. “Helping people feel good inside and out - Skinfinity blends pampering with personalized, results-driven aesthetic care.”

Finding Rest When sleep doesn't come easy, Lauri Leadley can help.
As we step into 2026, there’s no better time to prioritize one of the most fundamental pillars of health: quality sleep. Lauri Leadley, founder of Valley Sleep Center, has dedicated over three decades to helping people understand that sleep isn’t a luxury and how it is essential medicine for the body and mind. Leadley’s philosophy starts with recognizing that good sleep begins long before your head hits the pillow. “Anything done with intention and consistency is bound for a great outcome,” she explains. Her practical advice centers on reserving your bed strictly for sleep or healing. This means no working under the covers, no endless scrolling through social media, and no letting your bedroom become a catch-all for unfolded laundry or clutter. When you treat your bedroom as a sanctuary (a space dedicated to tranquility and calm), you set the stage for truly restorative sleep. Beyond bedroom boundaries, Leadley emphasizes timing your evening routine thoughtfully. Avoid heavy meals within two hours of bedtime to prevent digestive discomfort and reflux. While that nightcap might seem relaxing, alcohol’s sedative effects wear off quickly, often leaving you wide awake at 1 a.m. Similarly, sugary snacks and caffeine have no place in your pre-sleep routine. Leadley’s expertise comes from a deeply personal place. Her journey into sleep medicine began over 30 years ago as a respiratory therapist when she encountered her first

patient with sleep apnea. The transformative moment came when a patient told her, “I’ve never dreamt before, but last night I finally did.” That single statement redirected her entire career path. But it was her own health battles—including multiple cancer diagnoses starting from a young age—that truly cemented her understanding of sleep’s healing power. “Sleep is the only time your body has to heal, regenerate, and form memories,” she reflects. After her second cancer diagnosis, when insomnia interfered with her recovery, she experienced firsthand how inadequate sleep sabotages healing. Leadley took those struggles and transformed them into purpose. Today, running Valley Sleep Center brings Leadley daily fulfillment. “Every. Single. Day. It’s all worth it,” she says with conviction. Whether it’s a patient finally experiencing dreams or simply feeling

rested for the first time in years, these moments fuel her passion. Even her grandchildren remind her why the work matters, grounding her on the busiest days. Her advice for anyone seeking better sleep tonight? Start treating rest as the health cornerstone it is: equal to nutrition, exercise, and mental wellness. Create a sleep sanctuary with comfortable sheets, a quality mattress, and a cool, dark, quiet environment. Try to wind down with a warm shower, light
journaling, or meditation. If you’re slightly hungry, reach for tart cherries rather than heavy snacks. And if you have a partner, don’t underestimate the power of spooning. “Go to bed with a clear mind and a peaceful heart, ready for a fresh new day,” Leadley advises. In 2026, perhaps the most revolutionary act of self-care is simply choosing to rest well. www.valleysleepcenter.com
