Embracing Local Love I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Hailey Reidhead wants to hear from other women. She says she has always been interested in the stories of everyday women. She began as a hairstylist, chatting with customers as she did their hair. For the past year, she has interviewed women for her podcast called, She's A Lady. Hailey has spoken to women from both Queen Creek and Gilbert, and some further afield, but she keeps it local for the most part. Similar to her podcast, she wants these conversations to be honest and relatable. Her guests have touched upon subjects like running a business, pregnancy, divorce, recovery, and more. In their own ways, many have been inspiring or educational, but more than anything Hailey wants her listeners to feel connected. While some subjects can be deep, Hailey says that is not her main goal. Her real objective is to give people hope and not to feel so isolated, whatever their circumstances might be. Hailey has also kept it light with 'bad date' stories submitted by her listeners. Those listeners have grown too. Her podcast has had some 500 downloads. Plus, last year she hosted a party for her listeners in which over 200 attended. Clearly, women need to hear from other women. Hailey's one to one format which allows her to do a deep dive with her guest provides that intimacy and unscripted conversation that many of us can recognize. Make the Queen Creek Olive Mill's easy yet romantic dinner to impress your Valentine. ingredients: • 1 lb. package linguine pasta • 2 tablespoons Queen Creek Olive Mill Delicate Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 4 cloves garlic, minced • 1/2 cup chicken broth • 1/4 cup white wine • 1 lemon, juiced • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest • Salt to taste • 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper • 1 lb. fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined • pats of butter • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley • Pinch of red chili flakes • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

directions: Step 1. Bring a pot of lightly salted water to boil. Add linguine, cook until al dente. Drain and toss with olive oil to prevent sticking. Step 2. Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat, and sauté garlic about 1 minute. Add chicken broth, wine, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat, simmer for 4-5 minutes. Step 3. Add shrimp and butter into the saucepan. Poach for 2 to 3 minutes, until shrimp is opaque. Stir in cooked linguine, parsley, basil and chili flakes. their students are usually rings and necklaces, but they have even helped people re-set family heirlooms. Brenlyn and Jennifer lead workshops in silversmithing where customers select their stone and end up creating an original work of art that they can wear out of the shop. Brenlyn says she identifies with her customers' sense of accomplishment and pride when making their own jewelry. The experience must be catching too since half their customers are repeat customers, usually with a guest. The workshops are offered every evening and three more are held on Saturday. The workshops typically begin with a check in and you are provided with a menu of options to choose from. From there, people are shown the supplies and walk them through the process in a free flow fashion. The entire process of finishing a piece can take 2-3 hours and all ages are welcome. What emerges is a piece of jewelry as unique as the wearer.

Upon entering the space of Gem Addict Workshop, the walls are as bright as the polished stones set out like candy on a display table. Not only is it vibrant but welcoming too. This is a jewelry shop with a hands on touch, inviting you to mix both your artistic and industrious side. Brenlyn Flaherty says her addiction began when she took a silversmithing class and fell instantly in love. She found that from then on she couldn't stop talking or thinking about this new passion. Her mother, Jennifer, recognized her daughter's enthusiasm and encouraged her to share her knowledge by offering classes. So in May of 2019, having no business experience, they started small and began with friends and family. Gradually, through social media and word of mouth, this mother and daughter team began to grow their operation. They work primarily with sterling silver and stones that are sourced mostly from Tucson. The most popular items made by

One of the names you may have seen recurring in the many photos taken for our publication is Kaeden Peterson. Kaeden says he considers himself a 'Western Lifestyle Photographer'. He grew up working and playing on his grandparents' cattle ranch in Utah, surrounded by the western way of life. Rodeo photography therefore resonates with him, though he admits, it can be a challenge. 'Rodeo is fast paced you aren't going to capture everything and when a spectacular moment happens, there is a chance you missed something... when the moment is gone, it is gone.' ou may have seen the white modular home, with the quilt pattern on the side, off of Riggs Road. Owner, Tori Spencer, bought the land with the unloved little house back in February 2021, with the hope of starting a sewing school. Once she and her husband had remodeled the place and built a home behind it, she began to offer classes for both children and adults. The little house has several sewing machines and shelves that are bursting with a selection of colored fabrics and

spools of thread. Although Tori says that her experience with sewing was not love at first sight. She was roped into a quilting project with her 5 sisters in law. Gradually, the creativity, partnership, and progress they made inspired a passion for the art. Sewing would seem to be of little use in an age where new clothes and bags can be bought quickly and cheaply just about everywhere. Tori attributes the interest in this lost art as people really wanting to create something with their own two hands. In this highly manufactured and industrialized culture where many of the things we own have been made overseas,

the chance to design something original and claim it has an enduring appeal. As a result, there has been high demand and spots fill up quickly. Tori says that while the skill is useful and people discover a new creative side, she ultimately wants them to find the fun in it like she did. Her students often walk away proud of their creations and even some newly formed friendships too. Tori offers lessons in alterations and repairs, the long arm quilt machine, project classes, and you can even bring your own projects and your personal sewing machine too.
