Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love and express love every day. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for them every day. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what last regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. Part of what makes a home is the atmosphere you create around you. The pictures on the wall, the style of furniture, and even the colors on the wall. Yet, one aspect that can play a very important role in your environment is one you can't even see... scent. Who doesn't instantly feel warmed by a memory of a baked apple pie filling the house? Certainly these tantalizing aromas can be created through air fresheners, candles, or plug ins. Yet you might wonder what kind of ingredients might be in any of these products and therefore affecting the air you breathe. What if you could create your own natural and fragrant home scent? A new trend does just that called stovetop simmers. Using easy items that may already be in your home like apple peels, cinnamon sticks, slices of citrus, fresh rosemary, and more you can create any combination of flavors in a pot filled with water and bring to a boil. Then reduce on low and simmer slowly for up to a few hours. The delicious scents will waft through the air and fill every room in the house with a warming aroma. Mix and match and place orange slices with lemon and rosemary. For more spice, fill a pot with a few pieces of clove, a stick of cinnamon and apple. Other additions and combinations can use mint, fresh cranberries, and even pinecones. Just make sure you don't leave the house with the stove on or let the water completely evaporate from the pot. This simple and natural way of creating a cozy fragrance will have everyone sniffing the air and asking 'What is that amazing smell?'

Man of Steel MATT REIDHEAD IS THE OWNER OF STEEL AND STONE

The word 'steel' comes from a Germanic word meaning 'standing firm'. However, Matt Reidhead, founder and owner of Steel and Stone, calls it his passion. Matt is speaking about metal fabrication and welding. His company creates sleek, modern steel and glass doors, range hoods that are stylish focal points, and furniture. Matt loves that he can manipulate and shape steel to create one-of-a-kind pieces for his clients. Matt has always been drawn to building and working with his hands from a young age. He was fascinated by his dad's power tools and while his peers were busy playing video games, he preferred being outdoors building things such as skateboard ramps and forts. He started his career in welding at a sign company, and while that provided some on-the-job training, it did not spark a deep interest in him. It was around the age of 17 that Matt said he fell into a rebellious phase and began partying frequently. Eventually, this led to a serious addiction to drugs and alcohol. He describes this time as feeling 'hopeless and lost'.

After many failed attempts to get clean on his own, it was only through 'divine intervention' that he got into treatment. It became important to keep his mind and his hands busy along with his daily program of recovery. Saving up enough funds he invested in a welder and began tinkering around in the garage, shaping small pieces of furniture for family and friends. After his day job in construction, all of his free time went into creating the company Steel and Stone in 2010, when he was just 22. Finally, after 9 years he decided it was time to make the leap and do what he loved full-time. He describes slowly building his company and reputation over the next few years and says he 'feels truly blessed to be doing what I love'. Welding and fabrication work is hard, but Matt insists it's worth it. He has built up a satisfied clientele and estimates that he and his team have built in excess of 600 custom projects in the valley and across the country. Together with his team of talented fabricators (whom he could not do without), they have a reputation for quality craftsmanship and detail. The influences in style are both modern and yet have a touch of old-world elegance. His doors let in light with a simplicity that belies their sturdiness. Matt says his favorite part of the process is the stage when a design is lifted from the page and actually takes shape, coming to life before his eyes. It is clear that Matt views his designs as not merely functional but as works of art within the home. 'Steel, in my opinion, is a lot more accessible, it's a product from which you can build just about anything you can think up.' he says. Calm Over Chaos Quick and easy ways to bring order and simplicity to the home.

Our homes are a place of rest and sanctuary, but they also need to function. Families can fill a home with the frenetic energy of cooking, school projects, and a hub of comings and goings. Amid this chaos, it is all too easy to lose your phone, your keys, or even your mind. To help streamline efficiency and create order, simple tricks and habits can establish calm. First, let’s talk about motivation, it can be hard, and often we may find ourselves discouraged. Try turning on some music to lighten the mood. Or you can promise yourself a treat at the end of a task like a long bath in the bathroom you just turned into a spa-like atmosphere. Let’s not forget the other members of the household who might need some encouragement too. Create a family ‘Command Center’ using a chalkboard or whiteboard in a visible space to communicate everyone’s schedules, to-do lists, and more. This way everyone can be on the same page and input what they think is important to highlight too. In addition, here are some small ways to manage and organize your stuff, the family, and your home.

1. Creative Containers Using baskets, hooks, mason jars, or a lazy susan to better organize items in your closets or drawers gives them greater visibility and a consistent landing place. You can use labels so that everyone in the house gets the idea and gets in the habit. This way things are not just thrown or stuffed into places and forgotten. This strategy will also help to let you know when you are getting low on supplies and need replacing, like tissues and toilet paper.

Make sure that table by the front door doesn't become a dumping ground for mail, keys or bags. Put things away as soon as you can and avoid a cluttered surface that will become harder to sift through over time. The less cluttered your surfaces the easier it will be to enjoy the beauty of that dining room table or the clean lines of the kitchen countertop.

We can feel a bit bogged down by the amount of paper in our lives. Whether it is bills, junk mail, or the number of kid's artwork that could practically wallpaper a room! Time to go through each one and decide whether to recycle, toss, file, or shred that item and reduce the paper in your life. Where possible, opt for paperless billing to also shrink the number of forms you have to manage.

Assigning zones for a specific purpose can set it up for a curated kind of organization. If a homework station is what you need then you can supply a desk with pencils, a stapler, and erasers. It can be as big as the room or as small as a chopping board placed on the countertop in the kitchen with nearby cutting knives and mixing bowls in a cupboard below for a reliable prep meal station. By organizing according to function you won't have to pace or go searching for what you need.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen.

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

C O N T R A S T, C O N T R A S T, CONTRAST! From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen. Just Peachy A Spring Peach Caprese from the Queen Creek Olive Mill

Spring is in the air! That first warming sunshine that breaks through the slow thaw of winter is a welcome change. It gives you a fresh sense of new beginnings, a pep in your step, and a desire for those seasonal Spring fruits and veggies. The Queen Creek Olive Mill provides us with a new twist on an Italian staple, the Caprese salad! This classic recipe even seems to represent the Italian flag itself on a plate. Yet, in this recipe, an unexpected addition of sweet peaches introduces another ingredient that mingles new textures and flavors for even more impact and delight.
