ABOUT US
WHO WE ARE The Knight and Associates Team is passionate about helping others buy, sell, and invest in real estate. We pride ourselves on going above and beyond and ensuring our client’s experience is stress-free and enjoyable.
"If there were more than 5 stars then Nate and his team would get an even higher rating from us. We called Nate to talk about listing our house and he came by that same night to discuss and give his professional thoughts. He was open, honest, and listened to our thoughts/questions. Nate was positive from start to finish, he kept us sane, and our expectations were on the top of his list at all times. I wouldn't hesitate to work with Nate again, he went above and beyond. Our house sold very quickly, even in the slowing market, largely in part to Nate's team. From photography to marketing to communication - Nate is the BEST there is! Thanks for making our interesting/challenging situation easy on us, Nate!" SKYLER D.

Local Love
February 2023 PUBLISHER
Kaylee Williams | kaylee.williams@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Florence Daniels | florence.daniels@citylifestyle.com
I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Rock Point Coffee Co and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine and some cheese from Queen Creek Olive Mill and indulge on a movie night in. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before. Happy February!

Dinner for Two? Try a Valentine's themed dinner party instead.

So often the pressures of Valentine's Day centers on romance and couples. Yet Mindy Wester, local stylist and influencer of @houseonoakhill, suggests a sophisticated dinner party for friends and couples alike. Here she gives us her advice and style choices for a truly fun and new way to celebrate the day of love. Set among the sculptural olive trees at Queen Creek Olive Mill, and a golden sunset filtering through the canopy, Mindy

set a farm table with what you might expect in the form of candles, dinnerware, and glasses. Yet the touches are not the standard pink and red of Valentine's. She says, 'While I love the traditional colors associated with Valentine’s Day, I always enjoy incorporating non-traditional colors into my designs.' Navy blue ribbons cascade down the back of bistro chairs and blue thistle peeks out amid the pale pink and cream-colored roses,
this is what Mindy describes as the 'playful and unexpected' decor in her design. Mindy herself has been hosting parties all of her adult life. Designing and creating tablescapes has become an art form for her. She describes herself as 'a home décor enthusiast'. She has no “formal” training other than online workshops and yet her passion and creative eye are clear. Sharing her passion is a mission FEB R UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . too, she says, 'I hope to inspire others to get creative and discover the joy of designing.' Her advice is both practical as it is beautiful and artful. As with any party or event, preparation is essential and lowers the stress on the day. Mindy encourages careful planning and says, 'The more you are able to plan and prepare ahead of time, the more enjoyable the actual party day will be.' Begin by mapping out a theme or color palette, then write down everything you will need in the form of décor, food, dishes, florals, and more. In addition, Mindy suggests doing an actual mock-up of your table before the big day. 'Once you’ve done all you can do, when the guests start arrivinggo with the flow. Embrace the fun, enjoy the conversations, and if something is forgotten (because we are human after all)…laugh at the mishap and move on.' she says. For our Valentine's dinner party, Mindy has created a tablescape that is designed to catch your eye with strings of faux pearls weaving in and out and a napkin folded into a rose for romance on a plate. However, it is nature itself that inspires much of Mindy's styling. Branches of the olive trees are tucked in among the candles and flowers. 'Since we were surrounded by beautiful olive trees, I added them to the faux greenery; they were the perfect touch. I always recommend mixing faux with real', Mindy advises. Mixing elements and textures are key as they provide 'interest and color'. Mindy also believes in providing 'layers' to a dinner table in the form of various heights of glasses, chargers, pedestals, cake stands, and table runners in order to give visual appeal. Mindy also recommends a focal point at the table, 'Having a beautiful centerpiece ensures your table has a “center” that ties everything together. I’ve chosen a custom floral centerpiece by The Cottage Flowers & Gifts', which mingles a palette of blush with moody blues, soft white, with peeks of yellow. For her guests, there is much to take in, and the impression is that a lot of thought and even expense has gone into the decor. Yet Mindy is adamant that the look can be achieved inexpensively so long as you get creative and resourceful. For example, she says, 'mixing faux florals (that can be used over and over again) will save you money over time.' Next, using nature itself 'such as flowers, stems, greenery, fruits,

etc. will cost you nothing but add a sense of charm and beauty.' If you don't have enough of the same tableware or utensils, merely mix and match, something Mindy says she is known for. Mindy also suggests menus that go a long way, 'items that can feed larger groups at low cost like pasta, rice dishes, salads, soups, and breads.' Finally, by asking guests to 'bring their favorite dessert or beverage is completely acceptable and will help out immensely' both with time and cost. The atmosphere created here is inviting, joyful, and puts partygoers at ease. Mindy says that her goal is to make everyone feel immediately welcomed as they arrive. The Queen Creek Olive Mill's very own Sparkling Raspberry and Peach wine are opened and poured out as an instant gesture that each guest can relax and settle in. To save some cooking time try ordering some appetizers like the Olive Mill's delicious Antipasto Board or their Bruschetta Dolce which can be ordered in advance and picked up to
go. For the meal itself, Mindy recommends a pasta dish as a delicious and proven favorite. 'Pasta is my go-to when feeding the masses. A large salad is also easy and can be catered to a specific occasion. For Valentine’s Day consider an elevated pasta menu with Vodka cream sauce or marsala wine sauce paired with a spinach salad topped with heart-shaped strawberries or bacon roses.' Ultimately, Mindy gives you a dinner party that is 'elevated yet welcoming... elegant yet achievable'. As Mindy says: 'It’s the little things that always get me and it’s the little things that will make an impression on your guests as well.' QUEEN CREEK ART LOVERS THREE LOCAL ARTISANS SHOWC A SE T H EI R PA S SION.
ARTICLE BY FLORENCE DANIELS
Few people can probably explain why they are drawn to a particular pursuit or passion. They only know that the love for their art form is there. If you happen to attend the regular farmer's markets in town you will see booth after booth of people sharing their crafts. Each artist applies a careful eye and a steady hand to produce an original and genuine work of art. These can be expressions of an appreciation for desert sunsets, the inherent beauty found in the grain of wood, or even making something as simple as concrete come alive with color and purpose. Each artist, working with their hands, is driven to share that passion that brings them joy and maybe even helps you capture a bit of that for yourself.
KAREN LONG DESERT MANDA LAS Karen Long is an independent artist who discovered her love for mandala art shortly after moving from Seattle, Washington to Queen Creek, Arizona. She was inspired by the beautiful sunsets, red earth and the array of colors that make up the desert climate. She soon found herself using these colors in the layered, circular patterns that became her craft, Desert Mandalas. Karen creates each unique piece as a meditation and as a silent symbol of the universe in its ideal form. She creates and shares this art in hopes that it will help fellow meditators contemplate and envision their journey from suffering toward inner peace and joy. For custom pieces, you can contact her directly at karenlong0508@gmail.com.

MERILEE IMAGINED
Jason Specht is the owner and operator of Roadrunner Woodworking. He has lived in Queen Creek since 2018 and started the company at the beginning of 2020, but he has had a fascination with building and creating since he was young. He began focusing mostly on woodworking after helping some friends build projects around their homes and realizing his passion. So he started a business where he could explore his creativity and do something he enjoyed. Roadrunner is a family affair with his girlfriend assisting in creative direction. Roadrunner Woodworking focuses on handcrafted, small everyday-use items, ranging from cutting boards and charcuterie boards to bottle openers and serving trays, with some occasional commissions. He uses domestic hardwoods like walnut, ash, and cherry, but also some exotic woods like purple heart, padauk, and yellow heart for color. His work can be seen on his Instagram - @roadrunnerwoodworking.
Merilee Pike's love for plants grew into a desire for more unique and colorful planters. Since then her work has evolved into so much more. From home décor, to kid's painting kits and fire pits, and a zero waste concept utilizing the excess concrete from pours to make one-of-a-kind creations. Even her two little girls (3 & 6) also enjoy getting involved and helping with new color combos, putting peanuts in the boxes and learning to care for their own plants. Her work can be found on Etsy, at The Collective in Chandler Mall and the Painted Tree Boutique in Scottsdale. You can also find her work on her Instagram @merileeimagined.

COZY CABIN RETREAT
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY FLORENCE DANIELS
A WARM WEEKEND AWAY IN SNOWY PINETOP-LAKESIDE.

M UST SE E | TR AVEL
It is roughly a three-hour drive to the White Mountains, and the trip to PinetopLakeside begins with views of the high desert. Rocky terrain, proud saguaros, and low brush melt away as you climb the winding roads through the mountains and find yourself surrounded by Ponderosa pines. There is a sudden drop in temperatures and it is clear that the Valley is far behind you. The towering pines, and the scent of snow intermingled with the hint of a distant wood-burning fire are a sure sign that you are in higher climes, albeit still in the state of Arizona. Pinetop is a welcome change, even if for a short weekend escape. You could not be blamed for the hopes of a cup of hot cocoa by a cozy fireplace as the snowflakes flutter down just outside the window of a snug cabin amid the trees. Pinetop does not disappoint.
Yet do not believe yourself to be confined to the great indoors alone, there is plenty to see and do in town. Start the morning with a frothy latte and chocolate croissant at the Arizona Mountain Coffee Co. Though there is plenty more on the menu in the form of drinks and bites to be had. A short walk away is the Gingerbread Cabin, a shop that sells jewelry, soaps, clothing, and the best fudge in town. You cannot leave without having tried their many flavors like hot chocolate, salted caramel, praline, and cappuccino. For some fresh air, try a casual stroll along the paved trail of Woodland Lake Park which takes you around the lake. This path is ideal if you have small kids or merely want an easy walk. You will pass plenty of locals walking their dogs or people fishing for trout off the pier. No matter what side of the lake you are on, you will find beautiful spots to photograph along the way. A popular spot for lunch is the Pinetop Brewing Co. which has their own microbrewery to develop Belgian-style beers. They serve up plenty of sandwiches, salads, and 'shareable' plates, but the burgers are a must and pair perfectly with one of their beers. The brioche burger buns are made right in town at a local bakery, and the sweet potato fries are addictive alongside a dill aioli dipping sauce. A 25 minute drive from Pinetop is the Sunrise Ski Resort if you are looking for some skiing, snowboarding, or even lessons. The resort has a cafe and restaurant on site as well as a ski shop for all your needs. However, if you are looking to rent ski gear in advance you can try Elevate Ride Shop in Pinetop where the fees are reasonable
Woodland Lake Park
Snowy Mountain Stables
and the people are helpful and friendly. At the base of the Ski Resort is Snowy Mountain Horse Stables. There you can go for a horseback ride or opt for a more leisurely ride in a horse drawn sleigh through the snow covered woods. The sleigh, pulled by two horses, takes you through the stillness and quiet of a snowy landscape. The only sound that follows you as the sleigh glides over the snow and in between the trees is the gentle ringing of the sleigh bells as the horses trot along. Aside from the grooves of the sleigh and hoof prints left in its wake, on either side the glistening snow appears unmarred apart from the occasional animal tracks of a rabbit or coyote. You can choose from a 20 minute or a 40 minute ride, either way, you must wrap up warm. A weekend in Pinetop can in fact be quite busy and active. However, for those looking to merely rest and relax by the fire for a cozy cabin retreat, there is plenty to be had of that too. A winter wonderland awaits!

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET
3 WAY S T O O R G A N I Z E A N D
Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our three tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.
3. UPGRADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

It may seem strange to plan your own cremation or funeral ceremony, but it’s the best way to ensure it’s what you want. It also helps your family get everything taken care of in advance, so they know that they’re doing the right thing for you.

Love at First Sight
Bar Vinedo concocts a little libation in honor of love. Bar Vinedo is a family-run restaurant here in Queen Creek and they have put together an original cocktail recipe just for us. Called 'Love at First Sight' it is chock full of berries, a splash of citrus, and flavored with the juice of the pomegranate. This ancient fruit was used in many wedding traditions and in Greek culture symbolizes fertility and prosperity. So raise a glass and drink to love!
