Happy New Year, Queen Creek! It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community-focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our town. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and making a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. My hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here’s to a healthy and happy 2023!

Purple Barley and Farro are hardly what you would call commonly known grains. Yet some of these ancient grains can be found right here in Queen Creek. Local Hayden Flour Mills harvests and produces these unusual and nutritious varieties. Here they provide us with some gorgeous recipes using their own ancient grains which are available to purchase at haydenflourmills.com. California Purple Barley Bowl

ingredients: • 1 cup (200 grams) Purple Barley Berries • 1 large handful of bean sprouts or microgreens • 1/2 cup (57 grams) crumbled Cotija or feta cheese • 1/4 cup (21 grams) sliced almonds, toasted • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 1 small ripe avocado, sliced • Flaky salt • Freshly ground black pepper • Lemony Yogurt Sauce: • 1/2 cup (113 grams) plain yogurt (non-Greek yogurt works best) • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest • 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives • Pinch of fine sea salt salt

directions: 1. Place 1 cup of Hayden Flour Mills Heritage Tibetan Purple Barley in a pot, cover in 3 inches of water. Bring to a boil, reduces heat and simmer for 40 minutes or until the barley is softened and plump but still chewy. Strain and set aside. 2. In a large bowl, mix the barley, sprouts, cheese, almonds, and kosher salt together. 3. To make the lemony yogurt sauce mix all the ingredients together in a small bowl. 4. Scoop the barley salad into two individual bowls and top with the avocado and a few generous spoonfuls of yogurt sauce. Sprinkle with flaky salt and pepper. 5. Share and enjoy! Emmer Farro Salad with Lime and Fennel makes:

2 large bowls

ingredients: • • • • • • • • • •

1 cup Emmer Farro Berries 1 bulb fennel, finely sliced 1/2 of a red onion, finely sliced 1 cup Castelvetrano or large green olives, pitted and smashed 1 tablespoon fresh mint, finely chopped 3 tablespoons olive oil Juice of 1 Lime ½ teaspoon fine sea salt 4 oz parmesan, thinly shaved Flaky sea salt and Cracked pepper to taste

directions: 1. Place 1 cup of Emmer Farro Berries in a medium saucepan, cover in 3 inches of water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 40 minutes or until the Emmer Farro is softened and plump but still chewy. Strain and set aside to cool. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lime juice, and fine sea salt. 3. Add the fennel, red onion, green olives, and fresh mint. Stir to combine. 4. Add the cooked and cooled Emmer Farro Berries and toss until evenly coated. 5. Season to taste with pepper and flaky sea salt. Top with thinly shaved parmesan. 6. Share and enjoy!

A New Start JULIA WHEATLEY BEGINS HER TERM AS MAYOR OF QUEEN CREEK

Mayor Julia Wheatley

Julia Wheatley is starting 2023 as the 6th Mayor of Queen Creek, Arizona. This is in addition to running a real estate and mortgage company with her husband, Benjamin, and raising four children. Originally from Gilbert, Julia moved to Queen Creek in 2007 after being drawn to its openness and small-town feel. When her first child was only two weeks old, Julia heard that there would be three available spots on the town council, with nine candidates running. After some quick thinking, she grabbed a clipboard and a pen and went down the line of people waiting outside Target on Black Friday to

acquire signatures and support. She spoke for several minutes with each person, listening to their hopes and concerns for their town. Service is familiar to Julia, whose father, Eldon Hastings, was a town council member and vice mayor in neighboring Gilbert. Both her parents were active in the community and those values were instilled in her from a young age. Yet the road from town council member to mayor was not initially in Julia's plans. It was only when former mayor Gail Barney announced his retirement and phoned her up to say she should consider running that the

possibility was presented. 'I was very flattered.' she said recalling the conversation, but she was also daunted. Being mayor was a big responsibility and a 4-year commitment. For Julia and her husband, their schedule was already full with work and their 12-year-old, 10-year-old, and 8-year-old twins. 'My husband and I had a heart to heart.' she says, describing how with his support and that of her peers, she threw her hat into the ring. Despite the challenge, Julia appears ready and eager to serve her town. Already, Julia describes her wonder at how much and how far Queen Creek has come in its 33-year history as an incorporated town. The businesses that have made a home here, bringing with them jobs, and attracting many young families to the surrounding natural beauty as it did for Julia. 'We used to camp near the base of the San Tan mountains here.' she added. That outdoor lifestyle and spirit of Queen Creek are still precious to her. It is the one thing she wouldn't change amid all the new developments in town. In fact, Julia is a proponent of the parks system in Queen Creek. As a mom, she understands the importance of having a place to

take your kids and away from the temptations of electronics. The parks are also a place for residents to gather and continue that sense of community. The town has already broken ground on the 85-acre Frontier Family park which will have a lake, ball fields, splash pad and more. The site will also have a recreation and aquatic center, which will open after the park. There are also plans to expand the Queen Creek and Sonoqui wash trails which encourage families to get out and explore. As mayor, Julia only wants to continue to promote that outdoor, healthy lifestyle that so many seek out in town. The prospects are exciting and Mayor Julia Wheatley calls herself Queen Creek's 'number one fan'. 'We have a saying,' she says, 'comfort of the country, convenience of the city.' Queen Creek certainly seems to provide that balance of live, work, and play. Going into 2023, Julia's resolutions are to be intentional in all that she does, even in a new, demanding position. As mayor, she has faith that this year for Queen Creek will be even better than the last.

Dr. Kathleen Smith of Furever Strong K9 Rehab understands how much our dogs mean to us. Originally, Dr. Kat began her journey as a physical therapist working with people for nine years. Yet when her beloved dog, Aurora, started showing signs of slowing down, her thoughts turned to helping her. Using her knowledge of massage and physical medicine, she began working on bringing Aurora back to her old self. The benefits of which became clear, and Aurora resumed her spark. This experience inspired Dr. Kat to look further into what she saw as an underserved population... dogs. Queen Creek in particular seems to be filled with dogs and dog lovers alike. Dr. Kat herself is the proud owner of three dogs, and so knows something about that vital connection. Not only that but how a dog's activity level can also affect its owner. In fact, as older dogs reduce in activity due to aches and pains, both the dog and dog owner can be affected on many levels by the decline in mobility. Town Manager, John Cross, Reflects on 26 Years of Service.

YOU MUST HAVE WITNESSED A LOT OF CHANGE IN YOUR TIME WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY FOR 26 YEARS. Indeed, a lot of change. Obviously, the interest in the community from homebuilding has been profound and for many years, Queen Creek offered larger lots and homes very competitively priced compared to other more developed communities. Regionally, I would say the construction of the Loop 202 freeway and the State Route 24 connection to Ellsworth Road provided a level of convenience that likely catapulted growth for Queen Creek.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU FEEL HAS STAYED THE SAME? I do think a lot has remained the same. Although the community has grown considerably, there remains a cultural strategy to maintain our connections to the land and people, whether it be our agricultural heritage or the San Tan Mountains.

John Cross IN YOUR TIME WORKING AS TOWN MANAGER, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT? When I started with Queen Creek, we did not have many of the traditional services such as water, sewer, police or fire. Now we do but in my 26 years, we were literally building a brand-new community. Since all of the services we now provide are major policy decisions, none of it would be possible without the direction and support provided by the Town Council.

WHEN YOU RETIRE, WHAT WILL YOU MISS THE MOST? Without question, the people. Whether it is the daily interactions with my fellow team members, the Town Council or members of the community, these interactions are all a blessing and can never be taken for granted.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT QUEEN CREEK? Without question, it is the people and our collective unending pioneering spirit. We have done some pretty groundbreaking things and there is so much more on the way.
