As it seems like it was just yesterday we were unwrapping gifts and toasting to 2022. Now-- as unbelievable as it may seem--it's time to do it all over again. The holiday season and the end of the year always bring about a feeling of reflection and a feeling of closure. Whether we're jumping head first into the spirit of the season, enjoying time with family-- no matter the distance is near or far--or reflecting on the past year while making plans and setting goals for the next, December always has a way of keeping us busy. While shopping for the perfect gift, prepping the perfect dinner, or crafting the perfect toast can all become a little overwhelming, I encourage you to take a deep breath, take a step back and take in all the moments, memories, and people that have made 2022 what it is. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our town has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. Cranberry is in season! These bright red berries are tart and tantalizing, even their scent is merry and bright. The Queen Creek Olive Mill celebrates this classic winter berry in their Cranberry White Balsamic Reduction, available from their on-site shop or online. Here they provide us with their favorite mouth-watering recipes to compliment your Christmas table.

H O L ID AY C R A NB E R R Y S A U C E INGREDIENTS • 1 cup of water • 1 cup of cane sugar • 1 (12ounce) package fresh cranberries, rinsed and drained • 1/2 cup of Queen Creek Olive Mill cranberry white balsamic reduction • Juice of 1 orange • 1 apple, peeled, cored, and diced • 1 pear, peeled, cored, and diced • 1/2 tsp. of salt • 1/2 tsp. of ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp. of ground nutmeg

DIRECTIONS 1. In a medium saucepan boil water and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Reduce the heat to simmer and stir in cranberries, cranberry white balsamic reduction, orange juice, apples, pears, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. 2. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until the cranberries burst. 3. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature. Serve.

T HREE CHIL EC R A N B E R R Y, PEAR & TOASTED PECAN STUFFING INGREDIENTS • 16 cups of cubed stale white bread • 1 cup of chopped toasted pecans • 1 cup of dried cranberries • 3/4 cup of 3 Chile Olive Oil • 1/4 cup of Cranberry White Balsamic Reduction • 2 cups of diced onions • 2 cups of diced celery • 2 chopped pears • 1 Tbsp. of dried sage • 1/2 tsp. of dried thyme • 1 sprig of fresh rosemary, chopped • 1/4 cup of chopped parsley • 1 tsp. of sea salt • 3 cups of chicken broth

DIRECTIONS 1. Toss bread cubes, toasted nuts and cranberries in a large bowl. 2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet, cook the onions, celery, and pears over medium heat for 2 minutes. 3. Add sage, thyme, rosemary, parsley, and salt stirring, for 2 minutes to blend flavors. 4. Pour mixture over the bread bowl. Drizzle with the chicken broth and Cranberry White Balsamic Reduction and mix lightly. 5. Transfer to a baking dish. Bake, covered, at 375 degrees F, for 30 minutes. 6. Uncover and bake until golden, about 30 more minutes.

Kelsie Caprioglio Captures the Essence of Christmas Warmth

‘I want to give people a sanctuary from life.’ Says Kelsie Caprioglio of Capri & Co., an interior design company serving Queen Creek and Gilbert. Caprioglio is a small business owner and a mom of four, so she knows something about seeking out and creating a space for calm and comfort. Especially during the holidays, our need to pause and be present for loved ones is only magnified. Our homes become center stage for family gatherings, and so it is no wonder that Caprioglio finds meaning and passion in what she does. ‘It’s the happiest time of the year, culturally we find it important to go above and beyond for our home and our families.’ she says. You can see that in the touches of Christmas cheer that Caprioglio carefully styles into her client’s home. She calls it ‘desert, organic, modern’ using neutrals, green (the client’s favorite color) along with a combination of black and white minimalism. ‘Not a lot of red’ says Caprioglio, which is right on track with Christmas trends this year that ditch the often used red with green. Instead, it is the use of garlands, natural wood tones, and organic textures that Caprioglio implements. The room is warmed with throws and pillows in creams and glints of gold. The look is intended to capture Christmas in a peaceful and intimate manner, complementing the style of the home and not overshadowing it. At the center of it all is a space made for family. Caprioglio moved to Arizona from snowy Colorado and for her, the difference has meant that the mild winters

don’t keep you hostage indoors. She admits that life here allows the inside to be extended outside and therefore your decor can move outdoors too. These days, many products can be placed either inside or outside, so there is no need to limit yourself. In fact, she plans on adorning her patio as much as she does the interior of the house. Whether it is a holiday-themed pillow on the patio furniture or even stockings hung on the outdoor fireplace, it really is a question of individual taste. Caprioglio insists that the holiday embellishments shouldn’t stop at the entryway. Every room can share in the Christmas spirit, even the bedrooms. In her own home, Caprioglio is beginning a new tradition where each of her children can decorate a small Christmas tree of their own in their individual rooms. It is clear that whatever age or inexperience, she believes that everyone should express the spirit and joy of the season. When asked what she would advise to a beginner, Caprioglio keeps it simple, ‘Whatever inspires that core feeling.’ she says. It doesn’t have to be expensive or over the top either. Light touches, incorporating family heirlooms, and even using the kid’s artwork can add personality and meaning. Putting in the effort beyond erecting the traditional Christmas tree can go far in lifting spirits. That is perhaps why Caprioglio believes in committing to the beauty of the holiday season. For her, and so many, this is the time of year to take a moment and be reminded of faith and family. Ticket to R ide! A train on display at the Grand Canyon Railway

The train station is decked out in holiday decor and there is a buzz in the chilly air as families wait in anticipation. Some of the groups standing about wear matching pajamas underneath their winter coats with tickets in hand. It might be odd that people would be wearing Christmas pajamas to board a train, but this is no ordinary train, this is the Polar Express! The North Pole is closer than you think and departures begin from Williams, Arizona. All throughout the month of December, the Grand Canyon Railway offers train rides to Santa’s workshop. The historic depot located very near route 66, also has a hotel on site and the Fred Harvey restaurant. During most of the year, the trains take tourists up to the Grand Canyon, but for the holidays the trains are transformed into the Polar Express. For those familiar with the book by Chris Van Allsburg written in 1985 and the subsequent film that inspired this 90-minute trip, the train and the pajamas all make sense. A boy is awakened in the middle of the night from his bed by a train right outside his home

that takes him to the North Pole. The Grand Canyon Railway brings much of the spirit and experience of the tale into the ride too. As the train pulls away from the station the adventure begins! Holiday music is played and entertainment of all kinds are provided. Soon everyone is served hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies. As the train chugs along, outside their windows is plenty to see with different light displays and at the very end Santa’s workshop and village. Naturally, Santa makes an appearance and hops on board greeting everyone. As you might expect from Santa, he stops to chat with every child in the car and diligently takes note of their Christmas wish list. Before he leaves he gifts each child a silver bell, just like the story, it is a parting gift to all those who truly believe. After all, who wouldn’t believe it after an incredible journey all the way to the North Pole! Tickets can be bought online with or without a night’s stay at the hotel. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
