t’s HOT! It’s July in Arizona, need I say more. Not really! Dig a bit deeper in this July “Summer Fun” issue and you will find that we have narrowed down our top 12 favorite summer adventures. I will give you an in depth look at a few of my personal favorite spots and why we can still love and enjoy Arizona in the heat. For starters, the lake in the summertime is a must for me and my family. In my personal opinion, there is nothing better than going to the lake with friends and family and creating memories around late night dinners. Needless to say, part of my top summer musts include Bartlett Lake and Lake Pleasant. Summer is time for campfires and s’mores, family and long hikes. With school right around the corner we need to just “jump in” to the rest of summer, as writer Hona Amar puts so well in the conclusion of our magazine. Recently my husband and I decided we would jump in to the rest of summer. So we packed up the car along with our 3-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter and stayed two nights, three days at the Adobe Grand Villas in Sedona. It was the most comfortable stay with attention to detail that is unlike any other. We enjoyed lavished meals from Chef Michael and Chef Jacqueline. Our Villa was a two-story, 1,200-square-foot Western Style Private Villa. We felt as if we had gone back in time to a cozy yet luxurious old Western cabin in the middle of the most beautiful red rock formations Sedona has to offer. So the question is, how are you going to jump into the rest of summer?

esley Robertson never would have imagined that some random web surfing would take her on a journey that has the potential to improve the lives of so many in the metro area. “Last summer I was on the computer and came across a pop-up ad of a small child with Down syndrome, and it was Gigi’s Playhouse,” recalls Robertson, a local entrepreneur and co-owner of the Paradise Valley Orangetheory Fitness. Herself a mother of a 15-year-old daughter with Down syndrome, Lesley’s curiosity compelled her to click on the advertisement. “It took me to their website and the story of how Gigi’s playhouse started in Chicago over 10 years ago,” she says. “I just kept clicking around and investigating, reading about all the programs, and just kept thinking about how wonderful it would be if we could get something like this in the Valley.” Never one to wait and mull things over, Robertson reached out 12 Paradise Valley Lifestyle | July 2014

to friends and other members in the community to gauge the interest in bringing a Gigi’s Playhouse to town. The response was overwhelming. A determined team of women eventually led to an established committee, with an initial fundraising goal of $100,000 to be able to get the vision in motion. Valley-area Toyota dealerships signed on early as a corporate sponsor, which was a great break in getting the ball moving. With more than 16 locations, including one in Mexico, Gigi’s Playhouse currently serves 16,000 participants each year. From children to adults, Gigi’s assists the needs of both children and adults of all ages with no-fee programs aimed at maximizing the self-confidence of people living with Down syndrome through a core of achievement, belief and confidence. Currently there are more than 30 different programs, with more constantly under development, that focus on the educational and

More than 200 people attended the gala, which included cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live music, a silent auction and a raffle. The evening raised $30,000, which means finding a location for the Playhouse is not all that far away. “They like us to be in a retail strip mall setting,” explains Robertson. “That way people walking by can stop and see what we are, and it will also allow for lots of opportunities for interaction with typical peers as well.” Anyone looking to find more information on Gigi’s Playhouse and its move into the Phoenix area can go to the organization’s official website at GigisPlayhouse.org. With the limited support from the state and school districts, we are just going to try and supplement wherever we can.” In April, the Phoenix Playhouse held their first formal fundraising event- a launch party held at Scottsdale’s Windgate Ranch.

hen it first opened in December 2013, The Henry drew locals quickly to Sam Fox’s, Sam Fox’s flagship restaurant located beneath the home offices of Fox Restaurant Concepts. The Henry marked the 15th restaurant concept in the Fox family in 15 years. In fact, there are two restaurants in the same location. The XV is a coffee bar which serves breakfast and lunch. You’ll find incredible tasting smoothies made with fresh fruit, coconut water; freshly squeezed juices, house made pastry and many tempting breakfast entrees. For lunch there is a wide selection of salads, burgers and sandwiches. A large seating area is available with Wi-Fi for dining in as well as a pickup window for items to go. As you enter The Henry, you’ll find a large lounge area with couches and comfy chairs to enjoy light appetizers or desserts and cocktails. A long bar, with a big screen television, has ample seating for those who enjoy meeting for happy hour. Executive Chef Christopher Wolven realizes what a great opportunity it is to be the head chef of this wonderful restaurant. His culinary background is extensive with on-thejob training at exclusive resorts which gave him more experience than most chefs his age. Wolven, born and raised in Phoenix, started his restaurant career working the front end of the business. He also has over 13 of experience working the back end as well. He has worked locally at The Mission in Tempe, Michael’s Cidel, Zinc Bistro, the Culinary Dropout and the Arrogant Butcher. In other locations he worked at a resort in Telluride and during the off months with top chefs in other states as well as at Cyrus, in Sonoma and abroad in Copenhagen and Stockholm. Wolven enjoys working with Sam Fox whose travels allow him to taste a pletho-

ra of culinary cuisine. He often describes an item to Wolven who then tries to recreate or improve it. “I can take a concept and develop a dish to match Sam’s vision,” comments Wolven. “After Sam’s taste testing, the item either makes it on the menu or it doesn’t.” Obviously Wolven is passionate about food and creating new items. Having a test kitchen right on property allows him, and other Fox restaurant chefs, an area to develop new dishes. seeds and hazelnut. Other appetizers included a warm kale and roasted garlic dip, grilled and chilled shrimp, wood grilled artichoke hearts, smoked Norwegian salmon, white truffle parmesan fries and the market soup. For my entrée I had the Mediterranean Branzino which is a smaller European Sea Bass and it was delicious. Sea Bass is one of my favorites and the Chilean Sea Bass is what I occasionally find. I was as pleased with this version as it was delicately grilled which locked in the flavor. My dinner companion ordered the Braised Short Ribs served with a bourbon caramel sauce, roasted mushrooms, French blue cheese and smashed potatoes. They tasted amazing. I can see why it is their number one seller as they’re tender, flavorful and melt in your mouth. Other entrees included Skuna Bay Salmon, which is flown in from Skuna Bay, Vancover. This salmon is in high demand because of the high quality of this wild fish which is kept in a farm-like atmosphere. Also on the menu are a wood grilled pork chop, Korean style skirt steak, wild mushroom tortelli, a Thai peanut black cod, and roasted chicken. A fun treat is having an open kitchen that allows you to watch the meats being cooked on an Argentina Grill. This grill has a crank that lowers and raises the rack over the wood which gives the chef more control over cooking the meat. The wood is changed based on the season and presently the meat is smoked as it cooks over hickory or pecan wood.

So glad I saved room for dessert, I ordered the salted peanut butter bars that were served with a chocolate ganache and were very, very good. I had a bite of my companion’s warm croissant bread pudding and caramel ice cream and it was yummy! And, we had to try the brown butter walnut ice cream made especially for The Henry by Nicola Imports and we weren’t disappointed. So unusual and so good, a definite must try!

Summersational Investments Ideas to make the most of your kids’ summer Article Casey Gibbons

t’s here! Summer celebrations are well under way! Sunshine, vacations, camps, swimming and family memories have taken the place of school and extra-curricular activities. This time of year is a unique chance for a child to have fun and free time. But did you know this is an ideal opportunity for investing in the minds and hearts of your children in ways that the rest of the year may not allow? As you plan out the next few weeks of your child’s break, consider utilizing time during each day or at least a few times a week to do things to guide them in fun yet productive activities. Not only will it enhance their growth as a person, but it can also help alleviate summertime boredom that can lend itself to whiny, lazy, fussy kids that can get into mischief. (Not that your kids or mine have ever acted this way, right?) There may only be one or two things you will want to choose but the point is to make the most of the time given so you can invest in your relationship and the overall development of your kids. Even for working parents, these are things that can be experienced in the early mornings, evenings, weekends or on your day off at home.

• Take a morning or evening walk. Listen to nature, stop and take note of neighbors you haven’t had time to interact with, or just chat casually as things come up. Or, for those with active boys or girls, perhaps taking a jog or bike ride is more their speed. The point is to be together enjoying the outdoors while having time to see neighbors or engage in a meaningful parent/child chat. • Learn a foreign language. Since there aren’t other subjects filling their minds or calling for homework, a new language or adding to one each summer can be fun for kids, especially if you use the right program or app. Just because school isn’t in session doesn’t mean its time to stop learning and challenging the mind. In fact, keeping the children in a “learning is for life” mindset will help them not compartmentalize schoolwork verses summer fun.

• Choose a book to read aloud and discuss what can be learned from it. Or have the children read on their own and tell you about it over dinner or during a car ride. The important thing is to choose a book that instills values or principles that benefit the child.

• Write letters to relatives or distant friends. Perhaps there are grandparents or great-aunts and uncles, former school friends, or neighbors that don’t get time to see your child that would enjoy a handwritten, personalized card in the mail. For those kids who struggle with handwriting, allowing them to do graphic design work and type a letter may be an enjoyable route and still accomplish the goal of sending love to someone.

• Plant a garden. Even wildflowers can be fun to grow if other flowers or food seems like too much to handle. A garden can teach the value of living things, patience, nurture and the celebration of growth from something small to full maturity.

• Volunteer at a local organization that could use some help or encouragement. This could be as simple as asking your church, community center or foster care organization if they need any help with a one-time project or as committed as having your teen assist

weekly with a family of many children just to give the mom a breather without having to pay. • Teach home skills. Most kids know how to unload a dishwasher or sweep, but what about teaching (or perhaps learning together) how to build a shelf, organize a garage, change the oil, balance a checkbook, paint a room, sew a button, cook a new meal, or prepare for a yard sale, etc.? Most likely we would rather do these on our own but kids would enjoy learning these abilities and will be able to use the skills later in life.

• Take time to play. Build a fort, draw with sidewalk chalk, get a game of kickball going, jump on the trampoline, play cards and board games, challenge a video game…just PLAY! Sometimes it can be hard to find the time to just get into the world of play with your kids, but they will love it and you may too! JULY 4 FABULOUS PHOENIX FOURTH PHOENIX

Bring the whole family to Steele Indian School Park in Central Phoenix for one of the biggest 4th of July events in the state boasting one of the largest fireworks shows around. This free, family event from 6-10 p.m. will feature two stages of live, local entertainment, inflatable rides and activities for purchase in the Kids Zone, a Classic Car exhibit, a “Splash Zone” area, and a spectacular Patriotic Program. Visitors can purchase food from more than 50 food and beverage vendors, and enjoy free community information booths and displays. Fireworks start at 9:30 p.m. Admission is free! Phoenix.gov/Parks.

Get ready for a unique 4th of July celebration at the Phoenix Zoo! There will be plenty of family fun and exclusive evening access to the zoo with activities for everyone. Highlights in-

clude free carousel rides, free painting, bounce house, special animal guests, music, and a classic summer BBQ featuring chopped chicken salads, hot dogs and veggies burgers, corn on the cob, and more. The evening will end with a very special viewing of the Tempe Town Lake Fireworks Spectacular at a “VIP” seating area in the back of the zoo! 7-10 p.m. Reservations required. The Main Stage will feature local live entertainment, and the 35-minute fireworks show will be shot from the Mill Avenue Bridge and choreographed to patriotic and classical music.
