JD showing off two of his most recent pieces in the studio.
He felt inspired to create a space dedicated to an extremely select group of artists who bring unique messages to the contemporary art world.
A little over twenty years ago, JD Miller began exploring the world of oil painting. He'd always been drawn to artistic pursuits - he studied pottery and sculpture during university before moving into a successful career as a professional musician. But once he discovered oil painting, he realized he'd found his true calling. JD developed the 3-Dimensional oil technique through which he conveyed his joy in the miracle of creation, as well as his sense of freedom and the synchronicity of the universe. In 2001, JD founded Reflectionism, an art philosophy grounded in Asian mindfulness and meditation. He felt inspired to create a space dedicated to an extremely select group of artists who bring unique messages to the contemporary art world. As a result, JD's vision came to life in 2008 in the form of Samuel Lynne CONTINUED >

Since then, JD has received a number of accolades, including being named the Official Artist for the 40th Anniversary of Shakespeare Dallas and serving as the official fine art provider for the Hampton Classic Horse Show. JD remains committed to never falling into complacency and always improving upon his craft. Want to see JD's work in person? Visit Samuel Lynne Galleries at 1105 Dragon Street, Dallas, TX. Give JD a follow on Instagram at @jdmillerart or Facebook at JD Miller Art.
Samuel Lynne Galleries Samuel Lynne Galleries rotates a variety of exciting art exhibitions throughout each calendar year. One thing that doesn’t change, though, is the annual Valentine’s Day Live Painting. McShan Florists donates a beautiful flower arrangement, and JD Miller recreates it in oil paint in real time, using the energy of the crowd to express joy and gratitude.

Homeowner Leslie Concors did the unthinkable......a 90 day remodel window while moving into this amazing wooded retreat in the heart of Preston Hollow. While not doing a large amount of work and avoiding a lot of demolition work, this already magnificent home got some shiny upgrades revitalizing it to the house you see today. Leslie's first item to tackle was the expansive kitchen with outdated appliances but good bones and a beautiful flow. No major demo work was done, the cabinetry all remained but got updates with new brass hardware and stain. Leslie called in on family friend and local homebuilder Heidi McKinley of McKinley Built homes to tackle the job....with a very short time frame. outdated dishwashers and a trash compactor were removed and replaced with new state of the art ones identical to what the owners had at their previous home. The Wolf and Sub Zero built ins remained but the facelift included new Miele coffee and microwave, crushed and cubed ice makers and solid granite countertops courtesy of Chris Gaines at Gage's Granite who uses state of the art laser and water jet CNC machines to ensure the highest quality cuts and finishings. Another highlight just off the kitchen is a brand new full bar with custom lighting and new glass shelving lightening up the previous space and anchoring the kitchen to one of the living areas. The 3 common living areas throughout the house needed very little done though some new furniture and accent items were added by Leslie to make the spaces a more eclectic representation of the family.
3 upstairs baths all received major renovations not only making them more modern and beautiful but more functional and efficient as well. All 3 three got full newly designed shower spaces and decorative tile from Ann Sacks to give each its own distinct design persona. The primary bedroom and living areas are their own wing on the ground floor including a large office, bedroom, sitting area, and bath all with tons of natural light and custom remote control shades for privacy or blackout for an extended slumber. The original thought and intent was to add even a little more structure on to this space to make a larger expanded closet, although after further valuation, some hollow space was discovered and with the design work of California Closets.....the his and hers shared closet of dreams came to fruition. Other newly added highlights from the interior remodel include an almost sexy laundry room, butlers pantry, and fully refinished floors. The best part of this magnificent home just may be the grounds it sits on, at just under an acre surrounded by mature trees and natural landscaping, you almost forget that you are in the middle of the city. The sleek rectangular pool is the centerpiece of an oversized backyard that is part turf and part natural grass. An outdoor fireplace and living area make for perfect entertaining space during the colder months. Leslie's husband and son are both avid golfers so why not utilize some of this huge lot with a putting green that's fun for everyone. This 5,290 square foot Austin contemporary was designed by Mark Barry of Barry Bull Ballas and originally erected in 2012. The home has four bedrooms, CONTINUED >

four full and two half baths, a three car garage and carport, walls of windows inviting the outside beauty of the wooded lot inside the home. The mixture of stone, tile, wood, concrete, and glass makes the home warm yet sleek and sophisticated. The entire lot is surrounded not only by large mature trees and an expansive landscape but a large metal and stone wall for privacy and seclusion. You can check out the builder that made this magic happen for this family in an extremely short amount of time with minimal demolition and maximum
revitalization. Lavender Bath Salt Blend what you need 16 ounces Bokek Dead Sea Salt 20 drops lavender essential oil
what you do In a mixing bowl, add drops of the essential oil to the bath salt and mix well; store in a glass jar. Add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of the scented salts to a bath for a relaxing experience. SeaSalt.com
From-Scratch Pasta
what you need
Yield: 1 pound
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs
what you do 1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.

Hosting the Perfect Dinner Party PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Your next event, served alfresco Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings. For this alfresco dinner party, Chef Kyle draws on his favorite recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast.
Insider Tips for Hosting: • Build a menu around the season. Start with what produce is available locally based on the season for the most authentic meal experience. For instance, Chef Kyle says “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” but that meal served in the heat of Summer wouldn’t hit the same. In-season fruits and vegetables will always be of highest quality and best taste. • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says.
28
PA RT Y P LA N N IN G | FO OD + BE VE RAGE
• Draw inspiration from the season’s colors and temperatures. For Spring and Summer, think flowers, fresh herbs and linens. For Fall, think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” For Winter, head indoors to create a cozy environment for guests to connect. • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with bur - nished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” •
As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” Insider Tips for Hosting: “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”

Fresh Roasted Brussels Sprouts & Hardwood Smoked Bacon
Heirloom Root Vegetable Hash Yield: 6-10 servings
Yield: 6 servings • 4 cups Brussels sprouts, raw, halved • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil • ¼ cup yellow onion, sliced • 1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thin • 1-2 cups bacon, smoked, thick cut, large dice • Salt, pepper to taste • 2 tablespoons real butter, unsalted • Optional garnish: 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. Preheat oven to 400 °F for convection setting, (425 °F conventional). 2. In mixing bowl, add oil and cut raw Brussels sprouts. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Place seasoned sprouts on baking sheet and bake in oven until done, about 20-40 minutes (soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some dark brown color). Remove from oven. 4. Place large sauté pan on medium heat and render bacon. Add a splash of olive oil to get it going, if needed. Cook until bacon is crispy and golden brown, 5-10 minutes. 5. Add onions to pan and cook until soft, 5-8 minutes. 6. Turn heat to high and add garlic and butter and cook for 1 minute. 7. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to pan and toss all together. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 8. For optional garnishes, add fresh chopped parsley. 9. Serve and enjoy!
CHEF NOTES: • If Brussels sprouts are large, cut in quarters. • Rendering bacon means extracting the bacon fat which adds a lot of flavor to the dish.
