In the past century, the market has fallen more than 20% on 22 separate occasions, with the average bear market decline reaching -37%. If history repeats itself, and it usually does. Think about it.
Are you prepared to lose 30% or more of your portfolio in the next 12 months?
THE UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH
Millions of investors believe they have active “money management,” when in reality they are paying for a buy-and-hold strategy with no protection. When markets fall, most advisors do nothing and still collect their fees. That’s not management. That’s exposure & neglect..
THERE IS A BETTER WAY
In his new book, John F. Reutemann Jr., CLU®, CFP®, reveals what most advisors won’t tell you and what you can do to protect yourself. With over 50 years of experience, he outlines how to:
• Recognize early warning signs of market downturns
• Avoid advisors who rely on outdated strategies
• Use disciplined approaches like sector rotation and trend signals
• Demand real risk management, not excuses
DON’T LET YOUR MONEY BECOME THE BEAR’S NEXT MEAL
If your portfolio dropped significantly in past market crashes and you were told it was “normal,” you’re not alone.
But you do have a choice moving forward.
Most tree and shrub problems begin long before they’re visible. often starts underground quietly years before symptoms appear above the surface. That’s why our specialists focus on monitoring and diagnosis, not assumptions or unnecessary treatments.

MOORLOW: Court Style, Refined
ARTICLE BY BIANCA BAIN VILLEGAS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Pickleball’s meteoric rise has ushered in a new era of style where performance meets polished athleisure. At the forefront is Moorlow, a premium women owned pickleball apparel brand based in Washington, D.C., blending elevated design with purposeful innovation.
Launched in 2025 by founders Sondra Hoffman, Holly Morris Espy, and Brooks Kenny, Moorlow approaches pickleball attire with a distinctive philosophy: clothing designed to move effortlessly from court to café. The collection merges sculpting performance fabrics with vibrant color palettes and tailored silhouettes suited for play or an afternoon outing.
Signature pieces define the line’s refined aesthetic. The Sondra Skort, one of the brand’s most popular designs, pairs athletic functionality with a flattering shape. Dresses such as The Mandy and The Holly reinterpret classic pleated court styles in sophisticated shades like Midnight and Cloud. The Brooksie Pullover, crafted from recycled performance fabric, offers lightweight layering, while Rock Shorts provide breathable stretch for movement. Technical details remain essential. Moisture-wicking fabrics, UPF 50+ sun protection, and pockets ensure practicality without sacrificing elegance.
Beyond fashion, Moorlow supports brain health initiatives, donating two dollars from every purchase toward nonprofit partners focused on dementia research and awareness. Moorlow demonstrates that style on the pickleball court can carry both performance and purpose. moorlow.com BLENDING PERFORMANCE,

ASHLEY RUSHING IS DEDICATED TO ELEVATED CARE WHILE ALSO GROUNDED IN COMPASSION
When the demands of life begin to feel overwhelming , Ashley Rushing encourages individuals to seek compassionate support early in the process, elevating their well-being long before stress becomes a strain.
As the Clinical Director of Evolve: A Behavioral Health Center (Evolve BHC) in Loudoun County, Virginia, Rushing leads a premier private practice built on compassionate, evidence-based care that helps clients regain balance, clarity, and control.
Serving clients across the D.C. Metropolitan area for more than a decade, Rushing and her team work with individuals and couples navigating a variety of mental wellness concerns, such as anxiety, depression, burnout, maternal mental health, substance abuse challenges, and women-specific challenges.
The practice’s diverse client base includes government officials, professional athletes, and families all from varied personal and professional paths. “No matter how different my clients’ paths are,” she said, “each client arrives with the same desire: to reclaim a sense of steadiness within themselves, a balance that elevates every corner of their lives."
Rushing is proud to lead a dedicated, all-women, and close-knit team whose work is grounded in expertise, warmth, and genuine connection. Together, these professionals serve individuals and families from diverse backgrounds, offering a supportive path toward healing, balance, and a more empowered sense of well-being.
“My personal dedication to the field is to help reduce the stigma and help normalize mental wellness,” she said. “My commitment to continue to enhance my personal understanding and interest in human behavior and emotional well-being is led by my curiosity about how people think, feel, and relate to one another.”
Rushing started her own practice because “I have always held a passion for helping others during some of the most challenging, transitional, and inspiring seasons of their lives,” she said.
Clinical Director Ashley Rushing at the St. Regis Hotel
Rushing and her team aim to create a compassionate and collaborative environment within Evolve BHC. In this way, clients can identify and understand patterns in their past and present, design and implement healthy boundaries, and develop the tools needed to overcome a myriad of mental wellness challenges.
Her background includes specialized work in addiction, along with deep training in perinatal and postpartum mental health, supporting women and families dealing with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
From individual work, to couples counseling, and dealing with various life transitions, Evolve BHC provides the therapy and quality of care that is increasingly needed in today’s demanding environment. Rushing emphasizes the importance of mental wellness, especially for women who are balancing home life, career demands, school, and family.
Her team helps clients develop bespoke treatment models to identify patterns and tools that help to shift and embrace healthier perspectives.
At the core of Evolve BHC’s philosophy is a belief in cultivating a community where mental wellness is honored with the same importance as one’s physical, social, and emotional wellness, creating an environment of true holistic luxury.
“I want every individual to feel assured that engaging with a therapist and investing in their mental well-being is a powerful and deeply honorable choice,” she said.
This level of care ensures her practice remains free of scheduling barriers; clients can receive an intake and a timely therapy appointment that reflects the practice’s commitment to exceptional, personalized support.
The ability to create new standards in mental health care and acceptance for the DMV community is at the top. of her priority list. In addition to running a thriving private practice, Rushing is the adoring mother of two young boys, and says there are many life lessons she wants to share with them, including the importance of having a strong relationship with God and having faith as their foundation.
“I wholeheartedly want them to value people and understand that no matter who you are or where you come from, you are deserving and have great value.”
Giving back to her community and beyond is a deeply treasured part of Rushing’s life, reflecting her belief that true beauty is found in generosity, connection, and the balance between personal success and meaningful service.
Her family has long been Distinguished Supporters of St. Jude’s Hospital, a legacy of compassion she is honored to continue. She also devotes her time to her church, where she finds joy volunteering for the youth ministry.
Rushing brings a rare blend of professional expertise, personal devotion, and an unwavering commitment to cultivating beauty and balance in her life and the lives of others.
Her mission is simple yet profoundly resonant: to build a community where mental wellness is valued, accessible, and free of stigma. “For me,” she said, “this means building a community where individuals feel strengthened, uplifted, and equipped to thrive."

DEBBIE MALOY’S RECIPE FOR REAL ESTATE SUCCESS
“Navigating the housing market in Potomac today is much like following a well-crafted recipe, each ingredient matters, and timing is everything.”
- Debbie Maloy
For Debbie Maloy, success—whether in the kitchen or in real estate, comes down to the same essential ingredients: care, preparation, and a genuine passion for bringing people together.
Recognized among the DMV’s premier real estate agents, Debbie has built her business on a foundation of trust, expertise, and attention to detail. Her path into real estate began through hands-on experience buying and selling both residential and commercial properties across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Through the practice of renovating homes from top to bottom, she developed a sharp eye for design, value, and what truly makes a home stand out.
Of proud Italian descent, Debbie brings that same warmth and hospitality into everything she does. Outside of work, she’s known for gathering family and friends around the table, often serving her signature Italian dishes and her famous Limoncello Ricotta Cookies.
That love of connection carries directly into her work. With deep roots in the Potomac community, Debbie guides her clients through every step of the process with confidence and care. From contractors and stagers to inspectors and lenders, she connects clients with trusted professionals so every detail is handled seamlessly.

egg Limoncello, lemon zest Flour, baking powder, salt Powdered sugar for dusting Directions Preheat oven to 350°F. Cream butter & sugar; mix in ricotta, egg, limoncello & zest. Stir in dry ingredients. Drop spoonfuls on lined baking sheet. Bake 12–15 min until lightly golden. Cool & dust with powdered sugar.
DEBBIE’S RECIPE FOR REAL ESTATE SUCCESS
Four key ingredients for navigating today’s market.
For Sellers
Presentation: Thoughtful preparation makes all the difference. Homes that feel current—with fresh interiors, updated kitchens, and beautifully designed outdoor living spaces—tend to attract the most attention and the strongest offers.
For Buyers
Preparation: Come to the table ready. Buyers should have financing in place, a clear understanding of their priorities, and the ability to act quickly when the right property appears. Well-prepared buyers often have the advantage in a market where exceptional homes do not linger.
Pricing with Precision: The right price invites interest and creates momentum, often leading to competitive offers and stronger outcomes.
Experience: A knowledgeable local agent helps blend these ingredients, ensuring both buyers and sellers navigate the process smoothly and confidently.
Life Beyond Real Estate: Real estate is only part of her story. When she’s not working with clients, Debbie enjoys cooking and baking. “I love bringing everyone together,” she says. “Whether it’s a formal dinner, a happy hour, or a Maj Jong night, I enjoy gathering with family and friends.”
The mother of two grown sons hopes her work ethic will serve as a lasting example. “My husband (of 29 years), Kreag, and I believe in a healthy work-life balance.”
Outside of work, Debbie enjoys an active lifestyle, including tennis, golf, and morning walks with her husband or close friends.
Like Debbie’s cooking, it’s all about the right ingredients—preparation, care, and attention to detail.

ASK THE VET
Q: My pet seems totally fine — do they really need senior bloodwork every year?
A: I get this question a lot, especially when pets are acting normal. The hard part is that as dogs and cats get older, many problems start long before we see any changes at home. Things like kidney disease, thyroid problems, or early diabetes can show up on lab work months or even years before a pet seems sick.
For most pets over about 7 years old, yearly bloodwork and a urinalysis help us keep an eye on how their organs are doing and give us a baseline to compare to as they age. When we catch changes early, we usually have more options and can keep pets feeling good for much longer.
If your pet is getting into their senior years, this is a good time to check in and make sure everything still looks the way it should.

FLORAL ART fully personalized
JENNIFER PHILLIPS
TRANSFORMS
EVENTS WITH THOUGHTFUL, PLAYFUL FLORAL DESIGNS, BLENDING CLIENT VISION AND PERSONAL CREATIVITY
ARTICLE BY DEBORAH BLUMBERG PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
When Jennifer Phillips transforms homes, event spaces, and other venues with local snapdragons, blue delphiniums, anemones, and other colorful flowers, she adds a delightful personal touch: each and every design feels tailored and intentional.
As the owner of wedding and event florist Vase and Vine, Phillips transformed a client’s home for a Vegas-style game night gathering, filling the space with thoughtful, playful arrangements. A mosaic of daisies anchored a long table bouquet, while another arrangement accented a blownglass chandelier. She wove dice and poker cards into the designs and delighted the client with a wine bottle with a custom-made label featuring his name, an unexpected flourish inspired by a prized wine cellar.
“I love when I have flexibility,” Phillips says. “That’s where I thrive. And, I always like to do a face-to-face. To bring clients into the shop, to show them flowers and get a feel for who they are and what they like. Some people are more formal, some more country. You can’t get that in an email. You have to meet in person to really know them.”
Before her flower business, Phillips worked for 15 years as safety director of Sysco Foods in Harrisburg. During those years, she also helped her flower shop owner twin sister, in Elkton, Virginia during rush periods like Mother’s Day and Valentine’s. “I remember standing there one day saying, ‘Wow you get paid to do this.’ And, I thought, I’m going to make a career change. I took a hard left in life.”
Phillips opened her own flower and gift shop in 2019, in Mount Jackson, in a renovated country gas station. “It was just darling,” she says. Vase arrangements gave way to weddings, and other events. After six months, she and her husband, Dale, bought Blue Ridge Florist in Harrisonburg. That business now also includes a tea room that hosts bridal and baby showers and Girl Scout troops earning a tea etiquette badge. Blue Ridge Florist & Tea Room sells plants, elegant evening bags and exclusively serves floral teas.
At 54, Phillips couldn’t be happier with her pivot, and she’s thrilled to expand Vase and Vine to cater to clients in Potomac and beyond. She designed the flowers for last year’s annual Polo Classic in Poolesville, Maryland, at the Congressional Polo Club, working with Brittany Ford Events. She hung flowers from the
pavilion’s rafters, letting them cascade over the long farm table where bouquets of Amaranth, pampas grass, curly willow, roses, and mums reached up to meet them in a lush, flowing display.
Phillips also recently honed her craft during a sought-after internship with Ian Prosser, a Tampa, Florida-based floral designer from Scotland, who’s known for high-end event design. Prosser served as Design Chairperson for a U.S. presidential inauguration and provided flowers for the British Royal Family, including Queen Elizabeth II. Phillips competed with florists nationwide for the coveted internship in 2024. She made it to the top three, but was not selected. Undeterred, the next year, she tried again, and won.
For three days last year, she worked in Prosser’s studio, Botanica International Design Studio, designing flowers for two large weddings, and then installing them on day three.
“Ian was the nicest and warmest person, and still to this day he’ll text to ask how I’m doing,” she says. Recently he advised her on the mechanics of floating pool arrangements. “I have a flower friend for life,” Phillips adds.
Also supporting her with Vase and Vine are her long-time friend and now employee Jennifer Hinkle, who assists with weddings and events, and employee Sherry Strausser, who works at Blue Ridge. Most days, when Phillips isn’t installing designs at an event, she’s behind the counter or meeting with brides (and sometimes grooms) at Blue Ridge.
Phillips prides herself on being able to handle last-minute, rush flower jobs, all within reason. “If it’s
“I just really try to hear and to listen to what the client’s vision is, to what it is that they want, but then also to put my flair on it.”
a small, intimate wedding with just a bouquet or boutonniere, two days’ notice if we’re not already booked is not out of the question.”
When brides come in, she’ll ask if they have a Pinterest board. “I’m a very visual person.” She works to mesh what brides wants with her own creative spin.
One West Virginia bride who planned a Texas-style wedding with cowhide rugs and Longhorn decor wanted a massive bouquet that Phillips knew would be heavy. “The bride told me, ‘I don’t care, we go big or we go home’, and I said ‘OK ma’am’, and designed one with peonies, and pampas grass. I just really try to hear and to listen to what the client’s vision is, to what it is that they want, but then also to put my flair on it.”
Jennifer Phillips is a rising force in floral design, blending entrepreneurial vision with refined artistry. As the winner of FTD’s Intern with Ian, she immersed herself in luxury wedding production at Botanica, mastering large-scale installations, business strategy, and precision-driven execution. From aisle meadows to dramatic reception florals, her work reflects both creativity and discipline. A former Safety Director turned co-owner of Blue Ridge Florist, Jennifer brings thoughtful leadership and passion to every design, continually elevating her craft and redefining what is possible in modern floral experiences.

FROM MORNING NEWS
TO MOTHERHOOD
THE FOX 5 DC MORNING ANCHOR REFLECTS ON EARLY MORNINGS, PREPARING FOR MOTHERHOOD, AND HER PASSION FOR UPLIFTING LOCAL BUSINESSES AND MOMS.
ARTICLE BY DEBORAH BLUMBERG
When Mikea Turner couldn’t find a reporting job after college, she broke into journalism by volunteering at Prince George’s Community Television. A month later, the station hired her as a freelancer. Three months later, she secured a full-time reporter role. Several reporting jobs later, the FOX 5 DC Emmy Award-winning morning anchor and lifestyle host has covered everything from the 2017 U.S. Presidential inauguration to the opening of the National Museum of African American History and Culture across her 15-year career. She’s interviewed legends like Smokie Robinson and Wolfgang Puck, and has championed
entrepreneurs, hosting them on a lifestyle cooking show called the LION Lunch Hour for two years.
Now, Turner is bringing that same determination and enthusiasm she’s carried with her throughout her career to her latest gig: motherhood. Turner and her husband, Brian, are welcoming their first child this May. Their baby boy will join the couple and Brian’s teenage daughter.
“Aside from minimal nausea, heightened fatigue and cravings like avocado egg and cheese croissant sandwiches and garlic Parmesan-crusted pepperoni and green pepper pizza, my pregnancy journey has
been better than expected,” says Turner, who’s documented her love story with Brian, their wedding, and her pregnancy journey for her followers on social media. “I can’t wait to meet our little prince.”
Like other expectant moms, Turner has agonized over getting her baby registry just right, securing the right childbirth and parenting classes, and the nursery colors—likely gray, beige, and mint green. All the while, she’s navigated a flurry of new parent questions (How many boxes of newborn diapers do I need? Is it safe to get my nails done at the salon?) all while keeping up with her busy career.
She’s also added a new project to her life, one sparked by her pregnancy: a motherhood podcast for Fox 5.
Her demanding schedule of rising at 2:45 a.m. to deliver the news will require careful planning to balance TV with a baby. “We’ll definitely be relying a lot on our village, which includes both of the baby’s grandmas,” Turner says. Lessons learned from life as a “bonus mom” to Brian’s daughter have helped prepare her for motherhood.
A shared family calendar curbs overcommitting, and Turner has learned parenthood means sacrifice. “I’ve been able to find balance,” she says. “And yes, at times, say ‘no’to things that prevent me from spending quality time with family.” She’s also organically built a genuine, loving relationship with her stepdaughter by paying close attention to her interests, like soccer and skincare products.
“And when dinnertime rolls around,” Turner adds, “I’ve made it a point to spark real conversation with phones put away. Blended families can be complex, but fortunately my husband and her mother have a healthy and respectful co-parenting relationship.”
Part of balancing it all includes Turner’s advocacy in the ALS community. The neurodegenerative disease is a cause near and dear to her heart. Her best friend’s mother was diagnosed over a decade ago, and even after her passing, Turner helps to
raise awareness and funds toward a cure, including featuring guests living with ALS.
She’s also added a new project to her life, one sparked by her pregnancy: a motherhood podcast for Fox 5. Turner, who’s the morning team’s newest mom, interviews health and wellness experts, local moms, and celebrities.
“It’s all about building a community, a place where moms can feel supported, empowered, and never alone,” she says. “Whether you’re a first-time mom or an empty-nester, it’s about women from all walks of life sharing experiences that have shaped, challenged, and stretched them.”
Through the podcast, which launched this spring, Turner especially wants to bring more awareness to postpartum depression. “I know people who’ve struggled with it, and I don’t think we talk about it enough.” She hopes to have actor Grace Byers, who recently opened up about her own postpartum journey, on the show.
For her own part, Turner says that like any first-time mom, she’s “just trying to figure it all out.” But she’s embracing the learning curve. “My husband and I are both so excited to go on this journey together,” she says.

THE ST. REGIS WASHINGTON, D.C. MARKS 100 YEARS OF ELEGANCE WITH SEASONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM TEA AND A YEAR OF REFINED CELEBRATION
A CENTURY AT WASHINGTON’S FINEST ADDRESS
Few addresses in Washington, D.C. have shaped the city’s social and cultural life with the quiet authority of The St. Regis Washington, D.C. For nearly a century, the storied hotel, just steps from the White House, has welcomed presidents, diplomats, artists, and discerning travelers. In 2026, the legendary property celebrates its centennial, marking one hundred years of hospitality defined by elegance, impeccable service, and timeless glamour.
The hotel’s story begins on October 1, 1926, when Washington developer Henry Wardman opened the Carlton Hotel with ambitions to rival Europe’s finest establishments. President Calvin Coolidge attended the opening celebration, signaling the arrival of a new center of social and political life in the capital. Within a decade, the Carlton had become a hub of influence, its lobby a place where policymakers mingled with Hollywood icons and business leaders.

WASHINGTON, D.C.
Over the decades, the hotel witnessed moments that shaped the national narrative. During World War II, industrialist Howard Hughes maintained a permanent suite, famously offering it to servicemen during his absences. In 1949, the property hosted the first public demonstration of color television presented by CBS to the Federal Communications Commission. By mid century, the Carlton, later renamed the Sheraton Carlton, had become one of Washington’s most revered landmarks, attracting figures such as Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and visiting world leaders.
In 1999, the property entered a new chapter when it became The St. Regis Washington, D.C., bringing the brand’s celebrated traditions, including its signature Butler Service, to the capital. Today, with 182 elegantly renovated guest rooms and suites, the hotel continues to embody the cultivated luxury that defined its earliest years while offering a refined residential experience in the heart of the city.
The centennial year has also earned the hotel induction into Historic Hotels of America, the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s program recognizing the nation’s most exceptional
historic properties. The distinction affirms the hotel’s enduring place in Washington’s architectural and cultural fabric.
Throughout 2026, guests are invited to celebrate through a series of curated experiences honoring both legacy and innovation. Among the most enchanting is the seasonal Cherry Blossom Afternoon Tea, a refined nod to Washington’s beloved spring tradition.
Served in the hotel’s grand lobby lounge, the tea features a selection of Dammann Frères teas, delicate tea sandwiches, handcrafted pastries, and freshly baked scones inspired by the season. Floral notes drawn from the city’s cherry blossoms lend the experience a distinctly Washington character, while optional Champagne pairings add a celebratory flourish.
The hotel’s Astor Terrace will also transform into the Caroline Astor Rose Garden, honoring the legendary Gilded Age hostess whose love of elegant entertaining shaped the St. Regis legacy. Additional highlights include a rotating Bloody Mary menu at the St. Regis Bar and a revived Alhambra Anniversary Menu featuring classic dishes served at the hotel over the past century.
The year will culminate in a Midnight Supper inspired by Caroline Astor’s famed late night soirées, an opulent tribute to a century of hospitality and refined entertaining, echoing the grand traditions that defined Washington society throughout the twentieth century.
Through eras of political change and cultural transformation, The St. Regis Washington, D.C. has remained a constant, an address where history unfolds beneath chandeliers and polished marble. One hundred years on, it continues to welcome the world with timeless elegance, thoughtful service, and a legacy that defines hospitality in the nation’s capital.

BECKY HILLYARD
From Side Hustle to Style Empire
The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”
She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.
Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?
A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?
A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.
Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?
A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.
Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?
A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.
Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?
A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.
This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

Women Who Paint the World Beautiful
Four remarkable Maryland-area artists whose vibrant work is bringing color, calm, and joy into homes and galleries across the country.

Kim Cohen's connection to art began at age seven, when she won a national drawing contest. That early recognition set her on a path she has followed ever since. After earning a Bachelor's degree in Art Education from the University of Maryland, she went on to teach art at Walt Whitman High School, where she prepared students for college art programs and professional careers. She later founded Cutie Pie, a children's clothing and accessories company for which she designed original pieces sold to retailers.
Today, Kim runs a private art studio in Potomac, Maryland, where she teaches individual and small group classes to adults of varying abilities. Meditation and mindfulness are central to her teaching approach, and she continues to pursue her own art education, currently studying under a master artist. Her work spans oil, acrylic, mixed media, and digital art. Her paintings are characterized by bold pops of color and an ability to capture the realistic essence of her subjects. They are currently featured at art shows, restaurants, and private residences across the country. Beyond her studio practice, Kim regularly donates proceeds from her work to a range of organizations, including Power of Pink Breast Cancer, Adoptions Together, Cystic Fibrosis, Keen, and local school auctions.

Tara Andris works in oil and has built her practice around the observation of the sky. Her landscapes are inspired by locations including Sonoma, Sarasota, and Calistoga, and are driven by the shifting light, color, and mood of the atmosphere. Since 2006, metal leaf has been a defining element of her work. She uses both gold and silver leaf to reflect the luminous quality of clouds and changing light. As natural light moves through a room, her paintings shift and glimmer in response, creating an effect that changes throughout the day. Each piece is intended to bring calm and a sense of connection to the space it occupies.

Maria-Victoria Checa is a French-born, DC-based painter who transitioned to a full-time studio practice in January 2022, after teaching mathematics at American University and Montgomery College. She works in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, creating both abstract and impressionist pieces. Rather than using traditional brushes, she works primarily with painting knives and squeegees to build her compositions. Prints of her work are available for purchase and she ships worldwide.

Mother’s Day Table
Tucked within a historic Georgetown row house, L’Avant Garde offers a Mother’s Day experience defined by quiet elegance and enduring French tradition. Here, celebration unfolds not in excess, but in refinement, an intimate setting of flickering wood burning fireplaces, polished hardwood floors, and a softly lit dining room that feels both timeless and warmly inviting.
At the helm, Partner Chef Sébastien Giannini, a French Riviera native and Maître Artisan, brings more than two decades of international culinary expertise to a menu that honors classic French technique while embracing a modern sensibility. His approach is both generous and precise, resulting in dishes that feel deeply rooted yet refreshingly current. Drawing inspiration from the coastal ease of the South of France, each plate reflects a balance of seasonality, technique, and understated luxury.
Guests may indulge in a thoughtfully composed prix fixe menu or select à la carte, with standouts such as bouillabaisse, duck breast, filet mignon, and indulgent signatures like lobster thermidor or delicately prepared eggs crowned with caviar. Each course is complemented by a dynamic cocktail program and a curated wine list with a particular reverence for French varietals, elevating the experience into a true expression of European dining culture. Attentive yet unobtrusive service further enhances the experience, allowing each moment to unfold with ease and intention.
L’Avant Garde is more than a restaurant; it is a study in balance, where sophistication meets ease, and culinary artistry is paired with an atmosphere that never feels overstated. For Mother’s Day, it offers something increasingly rare: a moment to pause, to gather, and to celebrate with intention. It is a place where generations can come together, where conversation lingers as long as the final sip of wine, and where memories are shaped through shared experience.
In a city defined by movement, L’Avant Garde invites guests to linger, over a glass of wine, a perfectly executed dish, and the company that matters most, transforming the occasion into a quietly luxurious tribute to tradition, taste, and togetherness.

ECHOES OF SPAIN
TorcuArt brings the living traditions of Spanish flamenco, music, scholarship, and community to the cultural landscape of Washington, D.C.
ARTICLE BY BIANCA BAIN VILLEGAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Flamenco begins with a single word: Olé.
Within those three letters lives a universe of feeling: joy and grief, love and heartbreak, celebration and longing. On May 16, 2026, that spirit will come alive at the Flores Flamencas Festival at Cabin John Regional Park, Bethesda. Get your tickets online, torcuart.com/event-details/floresflamencas-2026, where the rhythms, colors, and traditions of southern Spain will fill the air from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, flamenco remains both tradition and living conversation. In the United States, TorcuArt is dedicated to keeping that conversation alive. Founded in 2020, the nonprofit promotes classical flamenco and Spanish guitar through performances, workshops, and educational programs that bring together artists and audiences passionate about Spanish culture.
At the heart of its mission is preserving the legacy of Maestro Torcuato Zamora, a pioneering guitarist who helped shape American appreciation of flamenco. Born in Granada and raised in Barcelona, Zamora performed internationally before becoming a cultural ambassador in the U.S., appearing at venues including the Kennedy Center.
TorcuArt extends this legacy through Aula de Flamenco, a program blending live performance with cultural and historical insight, led by scholar Dr. José Miguel Hernández Jaramillo.
Through community programs, performances, and events like Flores Flamencas 2026, TorcuArt ensures the spirit of flamenco continues to resonate far beyond Spain. torcuart.com
