Perched atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean is one of the most picturesque locations I’ve ever visited. Villa Buena Onda is a boutique, luxury all-inclusive retreat located in the hills of Playas del Coco in Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province. Known for its personalized service, intimate atmosphere, and stunning views, the villa offers a unique blend of relaxation and sophistication. Set on six private acres and designed exclusively for large groups, the Villa features eight spacious bedrooms and accommodates up to 20 guests, offering an intimate, uncrowded experience that feels more like a private estate than a traditional resort. It was truly amazing to feel so close to people I barely knew and pura vida was bringing us together. The phrase “pura vida,” which literally translates to “pure life” in English, is one of the most iconic and widely used expressions in Costa Rica. More than just a saying, pura vida encapsulates a national ethos; one that reflects the country’s laid-back attitude, appreciation for life, and commitment to happiness and well-being. At its core, pura vida represents a philosophy of living simply, joyfully, and optimistically. It reflects an attitude that values contentment over stress, community over competition, and nature over materialism. worries,” “thank you,” or even “you’re welcome.” It is a flexible phrase that adapts to many social contexts but always carries a tone of positivity and goodwill. In just a few short days, we swam in the warm waters of Papagayo Bay, snorkeled with turtles, learned how to make tortillas and empanadas with Nella, a sweet abuela and the villa’s in-house chef, took in mesmerizing views from the hills, bathed in waterfalls, bar-hopped in town just minutes away, and so much more. It was truly one of the best times of my life, and I can’t wait to go back!

HISTORY

Windridge Vineyards, established in 2010, is owned by the families of brothers Ted, Tom (Hap), Robert, and Jeremy Butz. Their aunt and uncle, Mary and Rob Truland, are also partners in the vineyard business. The family has deep roots in Montgomery County’s farming community. For more than 50 years, they have continuously farmed the land where Windridge Vineyards’ Tasting Room and vineyard are situated. This authentic agricultural heritage guides decision-making in the vineyard and sets Windridge apart from wine producers who lack this deep experience. The four brothers are lifelong farmers who literally grew up as kids walking these fields. To diversify the family farming operations and with a passion for fine wine, the family planted the first vines in 2011. Initially, the plan was to be grape farmers, and the family sold fruit to local wineries for several years. Over time, the business grew, and they decided to produce fine wine under the Windridge label.

MARYLAND'S UNIQUE TERROIR

Terroir is a French term encompassing the unique environmental factors shaping a wine's character. These factors include soil composition, climate, and microclimate. Together, they create a distinct fingerprint for each vineyard, ultimately influencing the grapes grown and the wines produced. About 35 acres are appropriate for grapes. Butz said, "The vineyard has three different sites, each with unique microclimates, making grapevine cultivation a challenging yet rewarding endeavor." The first vines were planted at the Sugarland Vineyard in Poolesville in 2011, the Ithaca Vineyard in 2013, and Windridge Vineyard in Darnestown in 2018. The vines at all locations are cultivated using the traditional European-style cane pruning VSP (Vertical Shoot Position) trellis method.

The 2024 Albariño Release Weekend was held May 23-26, 2025.

THE FACILITY

The winery opened its doors in July 2019, pouring wine for guests in their Seneca Pavilion. The Tasting Room facilities were completed in 2020. The design ethos of the facility is “Elevated Farm Building,” which seeks to pay homage to traditional farm buildings while providing guests with a contemporary experience and an eye toward the future. The building’s location was carefully chosen to take advantage of the sloping terrain, providing space for our in-ground cellar and the beautiful sunset views on the site. The Seneca Pavilion is located near the vines, and is solar-powered with a full wine bar, and indoor and outdoor seating. Windridge Vineyards is limited to Adults 21+ in all indoor and outdoor areas. Guests of all ages are permitted at Reserved Private Events with advance scheduling confirmed by their Events Manager. LOCATION

Windridge Vineyards is a 40-minute drive from Washington DC, and is located on Darnestown Road, (Route 28), near Seneca Creek, just outside the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve. “Every little girl wants to be just like their father. I just took it a bit more literally than most.” Growing up watching her father, Jeremiah, build A1 Tree Pros, Micayla gained more than just business acumen, she developed a deep passion for plant care and an understanding of how it continues to scientifically evolve. “Most people think tree services are all about removal,” Micayla explains. “But we would much rather save a tree than remove one. It’s twofold—saving a tree is oftentimes much cheaper than removing one. In fact, 99% of the time, this is the more affordable option.” Micayla isn’t simply stepping into her father’s shoes, she’s forging her own path and fulfilling a legacy that runs as deep as the roots of the trees and plants she protects. In an industry traditionally dominated by men, Micayla has had her fair share of challenges, but she’s learned to let expertise speak louder than anything. “Don’t overthink it” is something she lives by and advises other women entering male-dominated fields. “Show up and show people that you know what you’re talking about. You’ll run into people who may not give you the respect firsthand, but there’s always someone else who would rather offer you encouragement than bring you down.” Her father, Jeremiah, beams with pride commenting on Micayla’s leadership. “She doesn’t just solve problems,” he says. “She prevents them. She finds solutions where others see obstacles and it’s incredibly rewarding to watch her embrace this mindset. It’s a much healthier way to see the world.” Micayla’s love for plants started early. In high school, she applied for an FFA SAE grant, receiving $1,000 to fund her own agricultural experience. With the grant, she grew and sold perennials for her school’s annual greenhouse sale, eventually expanding her project by repurposing a greenhouse from a local tractor supply store. Over two years, she reinvested her profits, nurturing plants even over winter and summer breaks. This dedication to plant care shaped her hands-on approach to business today. Looking to the future, Micayla’s vision extends beyond tree services. “My goal for A1 Tree Pros is to branch further into plant healthcare,” she explains. “It’s important to me that generations to come can experience the natural beauty we enjoy today.” Micayla is nurturing a legacy of environmental consciousness that continues to grow with each season.
