“Being worthy of our clients’ trust—that’s the real achievement.”
- Christopher L. Cox
Christopher L. Cox Managing Partner
For Christopher L. Cox, Managing Partner of The Monitor Group, financial planning is about people first. “We don’t just manage portfolios,” he says. “We help people navigate life’s most meaningful moments with confidence.”
This philosophy has shaped the culture of The Monitor Group, where clients are treated as partners, not accounts. From multigenerational families to business owners, the firm provides personalized guidance grounded in trust, clarity, and long-term perspective.
In recognition of his dedication, Chris has been named to Forbes’ Best-In-State Wealth Advisors list multiple times. This honor reflects not just his technical skill, but his deep commitment to client relationships, industry experience, and a long-term vision for financial success.
Walking into their Rockville office, clients immediately feel the difference: bright, welcoming spaces designed for conversation. Instead of diving straight into numbers, Cox and his team ask questions that matter about goals, values, and dreams. Every plan starts with listening and understanding.
Colleagues describe Cox as thoughtful, approachable, and dedicated, inspiring his team to see financial planning not just as a profession, but as a calling. The firm’s commitment to mentorship ensures clients and staff alike benefit from a culture of trust and collaboration.

Service isn’t an afterthought at The Monitor Group; it’s part of who they are. Named Montgomery County Business Volunteer of the Year, the firm under Chris’s direction has supported local nonprofits, mentored youth, and consistently contributed time and resources to community initiatives. Over the years, Chris has made it clear: true success is shared.
“Success feels better when it’s shared. Service is at the heart of everything we do.” Christopher L. Cox
As the firm continues to grow with its additional offices in SC and VA, its mission remains constant: helping families and businesses navigate life with confidence, clarity, and purpose. The Monitor Group’s combination of professional expertise and genuine care sets it apart, proving that financial guidance can be as human as it is strategic.

There is a particular beauty in loving where you live. It is found in the familiar faces behind neighborhood storefronts, the artistry that fills our stages, and the small moments of connection that transform a city into a community. Supporting local businesses is not simply an economic choice, it is a commitment to culture, creativity, and the people who give our neighborhoods their soul.

This season, our Around Town Guide invites you to experience the richness of what is happening close to home. Begin with the timeless elegance of The Washington Ballet’s production of Giselle, a hauntingly beautiful classic that continues to captivate audiences with its romance, technical mastery, and emotional depth. Edwaard Liang as Artistic Director is a reminder that world-class artistry often lives right in our own backyard.
In real estate, local expertise matters. Few embody this more fully than Nurit Coombe, owner of the award-winning The Agency DC. Her work reflects a deep understanding of the neighborhoods she serves where lifestyle, architecture, and community intersect. Supporting local leaders like Nurit ensures that growth remains thoughtful, personal, and rooted in care.
Self-care, too, flourishes locally. Ginger Nail Spa offers more than impeccable service, it is a sanctuary of calm, craftsmanship, and connection. Likewise, the thoughtful work of psychotherapist Ann Turner reminds us that investing in local wellness professionals strengthens the emotional fabric of our community.
Music lovers can tune in to the warm, familiar voice of Johnny Holiday, whose passion for local culture and soundtracks of our lives has long been a unifying presence around town.
And when wanderlust calls, indulge your senses with a taste of Aruba, a reminder that even global inspiration can be celebrated locally through cuisine, conversation, and shared experience.
Loving local is about intention. It is choosing presence over convenience, relationships over transactions, and community over anonymity. When we support local, we sustain the stories, talents, and traditions that make our city not just a place to live, but a place to belong.
Well wishes,

February 2026

Millions of investors believe they have a “money manager,” when in reality they’re paying for a buy-and-hold strategy that offers zero protection in bear markets. When markets fall, most advisors do nothing and still collect their fees, hoping prices eventually recover.
That’s not management. That’s neglect.
In a bold and eye-opening exposé, John F. Reutemann Jr., CLU®, CFP®, reveals how the financial industry has normalized this failure and what investors can do instead. Drawing on more than 50 years of experience and hard data, Reutemann exposes why nearly 9 out of 10 advisors use the same wealth-destroying approach and how to spot the warning signs before your retirement savings are at risk.
Inside the new book, you’ll discover how to:
- Identify advisors who rely on pie charts instead of protection
- Ask the questions most advisors hope you won’t
- Recognize early signals of bear markets
- Use disciplined strategies like sector rotation and moving averages
- Demand real risk management not excuses
The truth is uncomfortable: the industry profits when investors stay uninformed. This book pulls back the curtain on a system that abandoned its duty to protect your wealth—and shows what real money management actually looks like.

ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SONIA BARTOLOMEO FOR THE WASHINGTON BALLET
THE WASHINGTON BALLET LAUNCHES THE NEW YEAR WITH EDWAARD LIANG’S STRIKINGLY MODERN VISION OF THE ROMANTIC BALLET FAVORITE.
As he meticulously prepares for The Washington Ballet’s production of Giselle, renowned choreographer Edwaard Liang remains captivated by the enduring power of a ballet that he has loved since childhood.
His profoundly personal and strikingly modern reimagining of this beloved ballet is expected to take audiences on an unforgettable new journey, one that will take a familiar story and charge it with fresh emotional intensity, deeply resonating with each of us.
The Washington Ballet’s production of Giselle will ring in the New Year 2026 with performances in Sidney Harman Hall in Washington, D.C., from February 23 through March 8.

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised in Marin County, California, Edwaard Liang began dancing at age five with the Marin Ballet.
After training at the School of American Ballet, he joined New York City Ballet in 1993, the same year he won medals at the Prix de Lausanne International Ballet Competition and received the Mae L. Wien Award. He was promoted to Soloist in 1998.
In 2001, Liang joined the Tony Award-winning Broadway cast of the musical Fosse, later televised on PBS’ Great Performances. Through theater and dance, he found a profound sense of belonging.
“When I moved to New York City at 13, I found my people,” Liang said. “We had the same interests, the same type of insecurities, and all of the highs and lows involved in performing,” he recalled. “We loved that we were able to be seen.”
By 2002, he was invited by Jiří Kylián to join the acclaimed Nederlands Dans Theater, where he discovered his love for choreography. His works have been performed by leading companies worldwide, including the Mariinsky, Bolshoi, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and The Washington Ballet.
Liang was named Director of The Washington Ballet in 2023. His many accolades include an Emmy Award® for Vaulted, international choreography prizes, and nominations for Russia’s Golden Mask Award.
Liang began dance training at the tender age of five, and discovered his love for choreography as a member of the Nederland’s Dans Theater, a world-acclaimed modern company based in The Hague, in the Netherlands.
“When I was a dancer, I truly loved performing, but I also loved my time in the studio. That was what gave me energy and passion,” Liang explains of his transition to choreographer.
“I loved figuring things out and working things out with my partner, or as a group. From the beginning, choreography gave me another layer of that kind of culture, and to be part of a team, including the costume design and the lighting design. It’s about creating life on the stage.”
As the Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet, Liang is one of only four people to have led the organization, and the first person of color. He is also the first Asian American to lead a major American ballet company.
One aspect of Giselle that inspires Liang is the timeless story he first fell in love with as a young boy. “It is timeless because it is the story of the love of dance, the loss of innocence, forgiveness, and overall, it is about love,” he said. “It has all of the dramatic components of betrayal involved in a romantic triangle. I also appreciate the music because the score helps tell the story. It has all the components of a universal betrayal and love story.”
He added that he believes that certain ballets, like Giselle, are iconic. “They're kind of like the distillation of the best of the best, and they still work within the next generation. What I appreciate is that it still touches, moves, and inspires people.”
He describes the current production of Giselle as “more deconstructed, a little bit more modern in terms of its aesthetic. I wanted to create something that is unique and goes beyond the traditional sets of costumes, but at the same time, it is still the classical production in terms of the steps.”
Beaming with pride over what his dancers are accomplishing as a result of extremely hard work and dedication, what makes The Washington Ballet unique is how inclusive the company is and how it provides an abundance of opportunities for its students.

“Our Nutcracker has 400 students, the most dance students in America participating with the main company by almost double,” he said. “It is inspiring to know that we can give transformative experiences like this to our young dancers.”
He is also proud that this relatively small ensemble dance company – which has 24 company dancers and 10 studio company dancers and no principal soloists – provides the opportunity for dancers in Giselle, The Nutcracker, and other productions, “to perform the principal role one night and perform in the corps de ballet or as a soloist the next night.”
When it comes to the future of The Washington Ballet, Liang says his focus is on collaborating with other choreographers
to develop new ballets and innovative ways of telling stories, whether they're old or new.
“My vision for the company, and for our unique D.C. community, is to continue to expand our repertoire so that we have more access points ranging from ballets like Giselle or Cinderella all the way to more obscure contemporary choreographers that still have that spark of inspiration.”
He said that much of the ballet company's audience is curious, open-minded, and well-traveled, “so I believe that the more variety we can offer in terms of dance access, for our students, our dancers, and our audience base, will bode well for the future of The Washington Ballet.”

HOW HIGH STANDARDS, GLOBAL REACH, AND ELEVATED SERVICE HAVE MADE TEAM NURIT A TRUSTED NAME IN POTOMAC AND MONTGOMERY COUNTY
ARTICLE BY BIANCA BAIN VILLEGAS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DR. CEYLON MITCHELL, M3 MITCHELL MEDIA

Luxury in Potomac has a new meaning, and it begins with warmth, intention, and a signature shade of red that has become instantly recognizable throughout Montgomery County. At the center of that movement is Nurit Coombe, founder of Team Nurit | The Agency DC, ranked the #1 Real Estate Team in Maryland & Washington, D.C., and #20 nationwide, under the global leadership of CEO Mauricio Umansky.
With more than $300 million in annual sales and recently voted Best Realtor in Potomac, the team is widely known for strong results and standout marketing.

But Nurit is quick to clarify one essential point: luxury is not a price point, it is a standard of care.
“Whether someone is buying their first condo or selling a generational home, they deserve the same strategy, protection, and respect,” she says. “We care for them, understand them, and guide them through one of life’s greatest transitions with clarity, compassion, and joy.”
That belief has shaped Team Nurit’s reputation throughout Potomac and Montgomery County, one built on high standards, emotional intelligence, and deeply personal service.
Nurit’s leadership didn’t begin in real estate. Her foundation was built in the Israeli army, where she rose through the ranks to become Director of Business Development for Rafael, the Israeli Armament Development Authority. There, she managed complex defense programs that demanded exceptional strategy, analysis, and precision. Today, she brings that same calm, disciplined decision-making into real estate, guiding clients through negotiations and transitions with clarity and confidence.
Walk into a Team Nurit open house, and the difference is immediate. Spaces are

“It pushes us toward better ideas, bigger dreams, and the privilege of being part of a team that shares a passion for reaching their full potential.”
styled, inviting, and intentional. Behind every presentation is careful preparation, proven process, and genuine care. Each listing, at every price level, receives the same high-caliber approach:
• A personal, customized marketing plan
• Magazine-style photography and cinematic video
• Polished print and digital marketing
• Targeted local and global exposure through The Agency’s international network
Homes are not simply listed; they are thoughtfully introduced. Buyers aren’t rushed. Sellers feel supported. From firsttime buyers to long-time homeowners, every client receives the same elevated experience. Recently, a Potomac family preparing to sell the home where they had raised their children came to Nurit feeling the emotional weight of the moment. She guided them patiently, never rushing decisions, always listening. After the sale closed, she returned with a surprise: a luxury flush-mount photo album created from their professional listing photography. A wedding-quality keepsake. When they opened it, they cried. “You didn’t just sell our home,” they said. “You preserved our memories.”
Moments like that define Team Nurit’s culture. Behind the scenes, the team is warm, collaborative, and deeply client-centered. There is a subtle but powerful women-led energy driving its success
– supportive, focused, and exacting in the best way. Clients often describe working with Team Nurit as having a circle of advocates: sharp negotiators, thoughtful listeners, and tireless champions of their best interests.
For Nurit, leadership also means showing up for the community. The team actively supports neighborhood events, local initiatives, and philanthropy throughout Potomac and Montgomery County. This isn’t simply where they work, it’s where they live, connect, and give back.
Looking ahead, Nurit believes the future of real estate will be shaped less by price tags and more by people, purpose, and expectations. Buyers and sellers want clarity, advocacy, and to feel confident and cared for throughout the process.
That philosophy is simple but unwavering. “We know we have high standards, and we love that about ourselves,” Nurit says. “It pushes us toward better ideas, bigger dreams, and the privilege of being part of a team that shares a passion for reaching their full potential.”
That mindset shapes every client experience, every marketing decision, and every negotiation. It attracts a special kind of professional and serves a wide range of clients seeking exceptional service.
For Team Nurit | The Agency DC, luxury is not a price point. It is a promise.

Winter has a way of revealing more than we
Missing shingles, weakened flashing, and aging roofs often don’t show themselves until after months of snow, ice, and wind.
This Potomac homeowner noticed the signs early — and addressed the issue before spring storms arrived. If winter left your roof looking tired or worn, now is the time to have it professionally evaluated.

Nail care today blends beauty, wellness, and personal expression. At Ginger Nail Spa, that balance is shaped by how the work is done and how consistently it shows up from appointment to appointment.
When entering the spa, you will experience a rich environment of luxury fragrances, marble and quartz appointments in the salon and spotless restrooms.
Founded by Qi (Chi) Huang, Ginger Nail Spa reflects a hands-on approach that prioritizes both beauty and creativity. Qi Huang was born in Chengdu, China, an ancient city of 21 million people, rich Szechuan cuisine, and the home of the Panda bear. She was classically trained in nails and facials. Qi Qi remains closely involved in daily operations, setting service standards, overseeing technique, and shaping the overall experience of her Rockville studio. Her presence is felt in the studio’s attention to precision, its thoughtful service menu, and an environment that feels elevated and warm.
Each appointment begins with a conversation that narrows those ideas into something workable. The absolute highest quality colors are refined, techniques are discussed, and execution is deliberate. The focus stays on accuracy and wearability, so results look polished on day one and continue to hold up.
Spa pedicures include options such as the antioxidant-rich Green Tea Spa, Lavender Spa, and Golden Mystique treatments, each incorporating soaking rituals, exfoliation, massage, and hot stone elements. The experience is designed to feel restorative, not rushed.
Behind the scenes, the studio has invested in one of the state’s most advanced fresh air recovery systems, continuously replacing indoor air with filtered outdoor air to support comfort and long-term health.
The experience extends beyond the main floor, with waxing services thoughtfully located on a dedicated second level,

offering added privacy while keeping the primary space calm and uncluttered.
Ginger Nail Spa succeeds by narrowing its focus rather than expanding it. The work is careful. The environment is healthy. And the experience feels considered in ways clients notice and return for.

Johnny Holliday has spent more than six decades winning the trust, affection, and loyalty of audiences across the country. Best known as the longtime “Voice of the Maryland Terrapins,” Holliday’s career has reached far beyond the broadcast booth, touching music, theater, radio, television, and community life.

“The 2002 Basketball National Championship ... would be the highlight of anything I’ve done at Maryland.”
Before he became a legendary sportscaster, he was the country’s No. 1 Top 40 radio DJ. His success took him from Cleveland to New York to San Francisco. He did television work as well, including announcing the shows Hullabaloo and The Roger Miller Show, and for ABC This Week with David Brinkley and This Week with Sam Donaldson and Cokie Roberts. His national work also includes covering the Masters and the Olympics for ABC Radio.
Johnny arrived in DC in 1969 when he was hired to host WWDC-AM’s morning drive show. Johnny’s second act as a sportscaster has become the hallmark of his legacy. He has covered the Washington Bullets, Wizards, and the Washington Senators. He spent 13 years hosting Nats Xtra on TV for the Nationals. Since joining the Maryland Terrapins broadcast team in the late 1970s, Holliday has called more than 1,600 Terps football and basketball games. For generations of fans, his voice is inseparable from some of Maryland’s most memorable athletic moments.
Beyond the booth, Holliday has never been a performer content to limit himself. He has enjoyed a successful run in musical theater, appearing in over 30 musical productions throughout the D.C. region and earning a nomination for a Helen Hayes Award for the show Me and My Girl.
Off air and off stage, Holliday has long been dedicated to charitable work, hosting numerous fundraisers, participating in community events, and supporting causes that benefit children and local families. The same warmth that makes him a beloved broadcaster also makes him a generous ambassador for the communities he serves.
Now recognized as a true broadcasting icon, Holliday’s career stands as a testament to range, reinvention, and resilience. For Maryland fans, and for anyone who believes in the value of a life well lived, Johnny Holliday remains a voice of both history and heart.

Q&A WITH JOHNNY HOLLIDAY
Q: YOU WERE ONCE A TOP RADIO DJ. WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?
A: At the time it was no big deal because I had introduced so many other big acts: The Supremes, Sonny and Cher, The Four Seasons, even the Beatles for the last time they would ever perform in public.
Q: YOU’VE CALLED SOME OF THE GREAT MOMENTS IN MARYLAND SPORTS. WHAT STANDS OUT FOR YOU?
A: The 2002 Basketball National Championship, that would be the highlight of anything I’ve done at Maryland. The second would be the comeback win over Miami at the Orange Bowl in 1984, down 31 to 0 at halftime and they came back to win that game, the greatest comeback at the time in Division 1 college football history!
Q: HOW HAVE COLLEGE ATHLETICS CHANGED SINCE 1979 WHEN YOU BEGAN CALLING GAMES?
A: The NIL ruling (since 2021 student athletes can be compensated for the use of their personal brand, which includes their name, photo, and other aspects of their identity) and the transfer portal (the online database of student athletes who have informed their current school of their intent to transfer). Also, coaches today are not only coaches but now they have to be fundraisers. And of course, the players are better, they are stronger, they are quicker, they are so much more athletic today compared to when I first started.
Q: WHAT MAKES MARYLAND FANS SO SPECIAL?
A: I think the passion they have for all the Maryland sports. When you look at the teams we have lacrosse, soccer, basketball, football. They need the backing of the fans, win or lose, and Maryland fans are there for them.
Q: HOW HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCES IN RADIO AND THEATER INFLUENCED YOUR PLAY-BY-PLAY STYLE?
A: Being able to learn a script, learn songs, and learn choreography requires you to become very disciplined, and if the audio is lost during a ball game or interview it taught me how to keep talking, even for several minutes.

“I’m amazed by all the players have to balance to play college athletics, including the traveling, the discipline of games, practices, and meetings.”

Q: AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, WHAT KEEPS THE JOB OF THE PLAY-BYPLAY ANNOUNCER FOR THE TERPS EXCITING FOR YOU?
A: Probably the interaction with the athletes. Every year they change and every year I’m blown away by their enthusiasm for whatever sport they are playing, plus their love of Maryland and what tremendous role models they are for the younger generation. That and the fact that I’m
amazed by all the players have to balance to play college athletics, including the traveling, the discipline of games, practices, and meetings.
Q: LOOKING BACK, WHAT MAKES YOU THE PROUDEST?
A: My family. My wife Mary Clare, my three daughters and their spouses, and my grandkids and great-grandkids. Not anything I’ve done but all the things they’ve done!

I landed in Aruba with an open mind and an empty stomach, always a dangerous combination. As a food writer traveling with the Aruba Tourism Authority, I’d come to get a feel for the island’s dining scene, something I knew surprisingly little about despite my other Caribbean adventures. It didn’t take long for Aruba to surprise me.
With more than 100 nationalities represented, Aruba’s culinary landscape is vibrant, global, and far more sophisticated than I’d imagined. Chef’s table evenings, private dinners on secluded stretches of sand, and world-class bars effortlessly blend the island’s heritage with cosmopolitan refinement. If you’re planning
a romantic escape for Valentine’s Day, or honestly any day, these are the experiences I’d recommend for a tantalizing taste of paradise.
My favorite way to understand a place is by sitting close to the action, and Infini delivered that experience in spades. I took my place at the nine-seat counter and watched as Chef Urvin Croes’ team crafted a 12-course menu that unfolded like a storybook of Aruba’s past. The early bites honored the indigenous Arawak people; later courses wove in flavors inspired by West African, Chinese, and Indian communities that have shaped the island.
Each chef stepped forward to explain their dish, turning the meal into a guided journey. I left feeling like I’d tasted the island’s history and learned a little something, too.
Romance in Aruba doesn’t require much. Just give the island a sliver of sunset, and it does the rest. At The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba, I experienced a private dinner set directly on the beach. Soft light, a custom multi-course menu, and the hush of the waves made it feel like time slowed down just for me.
But my most unforgettable evening was at Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort, thanks to its exclusive access to Renaissance Island. After a short water taxi ride, I stepped onto a private paradise where flamingos wander as if they own the place. Here, couples can arrange wedding ceremonies, vow renewals, or picture-perfect candlelit dinners tucked beside the shoreline.
Then there was the lunch I’ll be dreaming about for years: a private meal prepared by Chef Xavi Jaramillo of The Xperience. His Caribbean-fusion menu was vibrant and soulful, but it was his coconut rice that stopped me mid-bite. I would fly back to Aruba for that dish alone.
To keep the night going, I wandered over to Apotek Speakeasy, a spot that feels like stepping into a glamorous old-world apothecary. I grabbed a “prescription” card from the wall and handed it to the bartender, who mixed up their signature take on an Aruba Ariba with doctorial precision.
By the time I left, I was already plotting my next trip back, because once you’ve tasted Aruba, it’s impossible not to return for seconds.

“Romance in Aruba really doesn’t require much. Just give the island a sliver of sunset, and it does the rest.”

Q: My dog is only two years old—does she really need a dental cleaning already?
A: She might. Dental disease can start surprisingly young, especially in small breeds. Genetics, mouth shape, and even chewing habits all play a role. If we’re already seeing tartar, bad breath, or red gums, a cleaning can prevent bigger issues later. Early care keeps teeth healthier long-term and can reduce how often cleanings are needed as your dog ages.
