The Season that Connects Us

Each year, Potomac Lifestyle’s Holiday & Best of Potomac issue celebrates the businesses, people, and places that make our community shine. From trusted home experts and beloved dining destinations to wellness leaders and luxury services, these honorees represent the very best of what it means to live and thrive here in Potomac.

There’s a certain magic that arrives with the holidays. It can’t be wrapped or purchased, but instead rises from the warmth of tradition, the glow of togetherness, and the quiet sparkle of gratitude. In a world that moves quickly, this season reminds us to slow down, gather, and focus on what truly matters. Around tables lined with candles and heirloom recipes, we share more than meals we share stories, laughter, and time. We open our homes and our hearts.

The holidays also invite reflection. As the year draws to a close, we take stock not of possessions, but of moments, the milestones reached, the challenges overcome, and the memories made with those who walked beside us.

Most of all, this season is an invitation to rediscover joy: to celebrate beauty, embrace wonder, and give generously. Whether through a festive gathering, a candlelit concert, or a snowy stroll through town, these moments become tomorrow’s treasured memories.

In this December 2025 issue, we honor the 2026 Readers’ Choice Best Businesses in Potomac, the creators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders who inspire us every day. We celebrate the elegant and the whimsical, the timeless and the delightfully unexpected.

To our advertisers, partners, and loyal readers, thank you. Your continued support allows us to share the stories that connect and strengthen our community. Most of our advertisers have been with Potomac Lifestyle for years, and we’re deeply grateful for the trust you place in us to showcase your work and your passion.

Wherever this season finds you, may it bring warmth to your home, wonder to your days, and love to your heart.

Celebrate boldly. Give generously. Live fully.

Happy Holidays!

A Holiday Tradition Woven in Heart and Heritage

Keegan Theatre’s - An Irish Carol - Returns for its 15th Season

In the Washington region, the holidays arrive not quietly but in a glittering crescendo. Streets glow with wreaths and white lights, hotel lobbies transform into cinematic displays, restaurants trade menus for mulled cocktails, and families, from infants bundled in velvet to grandparents wrapped in tradition, venture out in search of wonder. From the Kennedy Center to historic churches in Georgetown, from grandeur-filled galas to intimate concert halls, the season offers no shortage of enchantment.

Yet amid this abundance, one production has earned a deeply personal place in the cultural fabric of the DMV: Keegan Theatre’s beloved holiday play, An Irish Carol. Now in its 15th season, this soulful production returns to the company’s intimate home in Dupont Circle, reaffirming its status as one of the region’s most cherished traditions.

Written by Matthew J. Keenan and directed by Mark A. Rhea, the founder of Keegan, An Irish Carol is a stirring, distinctly Irish adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The story unfolds over a single Christmas Eve in a small Dublin pub owned by David, a caustic, emotionally barricaded man who has learned to keep others, and life itself, at arm's length.

Through visits from friends, family, strangers, and memories, he faces the painful consequences of his choices and discovers, with a blend of humor and grit, that redemption is possible, if one dares to accept it.

Unlike many seasonal productions drenched in glitter and nostalgia, An Irish Carol offers something richer: emotional truth. The world Keegan creates is warm, worn, and utterly authentic. It’s a place where ordinary people confront extraordinary truths over pints and unspoken histories. The play’s emotional power lies not in spectacle but sincerity. It reminds us that second chances are rarely magical; they are earned through humility, forgiveness, and courage.

At the artistic helm of Keegan Theatre is Susan Marie Rhea, Artistic Director since 2021 and a defining force in the company’s evolution.

Before her current role, Rhea served as Associate Artistic Director for 16 years, guiding Keegan from its grassroots beginnings to its permanent home on Church Street NW in Dupont Circle. Under her leadership, the company has expanded into a vital cultural institution; one that produces year-round theater, champions new voices, and provides transformative arts education.

Rhea is a Helen Hayes Award–winning actor and multiple nominee for her directing and performance work, and her artistic philosophy is unmistakable in the theater’s repertoire: honest, human storytelling at close range. “Keegan embraces work that invites connection,” she has said. “Theater is not an escape from reality, but a deeper engagement with it.”

An Irish Carol embodies this ethos. It doesn’t sentimentalize the holidays, it honors them, revealing why we cling to tradition in the first place: not for pageantry, but for meaning.

Since its founding in 1996, Keegan has earned more than 21 Helen Hayes Awards and over 100 nominations, engaging 15,000 patrons annually and serving more than 2,000 students through educational initiatives that reach across all eight D.C. wards. Its mission, “to take audiences to the vital heart of the theater experience,” is more than a statement; it is a lived practice.

Yet it is precisely in this season of exhilarating abundance that An Irish Carol feels essential. It invites audiences not merely to observe the holidays, but to feel them. It honors the rituals of gathering and gratitude. It celebrates the transformative power of compassion. And in a world that moves too fast, Keegan Theatre offers us a rare pause: a chance to sit together, listen to a story, and remember what matters. Because the holidays aren’t just about celebration, they’re about connection. And at Keegan Theatre, connection takes center stage.

This holiday season, explore the wonder in every corner of the DMV, from dazzling spectacles to intimate theatrical traditions. And before you plan your seasonal calendar, visit our exclusive Holiday Guide, featuring the region’s most inspired performances, winter experiences, and magical outings for all ages.

measure BEYOND

For over two decades, Matthew Plotner has mastered the rare art of bespoke tailoring, a craft that culminated in the creation of Beyond Measure Custom, his brand devoted to the pursuit of timeless elegance. From celebrated artists to business luminaries, Plotner’s clientele is united by a shared appreciation for clothing that whispers luxury rather than shouts it.

Though he works within the world of fashion, Plotner’s philosophy defies the transient. His designs are not dictated by trend or season but by the enduring allure of form, fit, and feeling. “The clothes we choose define how we move through space, how we think, and how we carry ourselves,” he reflects, a perspective shaped by his early years as a classically trained opera singer and pianist, where performance and presence were inseparable.

Unbound by formal training, Plotner’s creative instinct draws from cinema and the elegance of old-world refinement; an era when people dressed not merely to impress, but to inspire. His tenure at Ralph Lauren, where he led the brand’s global custom division, sharpened his eye for craftsmanship and introduced him to the finest mills across Europe. There, among bespoke masters, he absorbed the nuances of cut, drape, and proportion that define true luxury.

Today, within his Potomac, Maryland showroom, Plotner curates a selection of the world’s most exquisite fabrics, realized through the artistry of his New York master tailor. The result is Beyond Measure Custom; a brand that doesn’t chase attention, but commands it quietly, through the integrity of its craft and the timeless confidence of those who wear it.

WHERE FOOD MEETS HEART

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Great meals don’t just feed people, they bring them together. That’s the philosophy behind Lawson Street Group (LSG), a catering and events company making its mark across the DMV region. Known for its artistry, warmth, and attention to detail, LSG has become a name synonymous with unforgettable experiences.

At the center of it all is Danielle Rozier, Owner and Culinary Director. For Danielle, food has always been about connection—about the joy of gathering, the comfort of tradition, and the excitement of celebrating life’s milestones. With Lawson Street Group, she has built more than a catering company; she has created a stage where food becomes memory.

EXPERIENCES THAT LAST BEYOND THE PLATE

From stylish weddings to corporate galas, LSG is recognized for transforming events into moments that linger long after the last bite. Every menu is thoughtfully curated, often spotlighting fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients. Elegant buffets, interactive stations, and custom pairings are designed not just to satisfy, but to delight.

What makes the Lawson Street Group experience unique is the way every detail is considered—from the flow of service to the presentation of each dish. “Food is the centerpiece, but it’s also the backdrop to celebration,” Danielle explains. “We want our clients and their guests to feel cared for, seen, and celebrated.”

A VISION DRIVEN BY PEOPLE

More than the menus or events, it’s Danielle’s heart for people that sets LSG apart. She leads with warmth and purpose, ensuring that both her team and her clients feel valued. Under her guidance, LSG has become a company where staff are treated like family and clients return not just for the food, but for the relationships built along the way.

Community is also a cornerstone of Danielle’s vision. She is deeply committed to sustainability, local partnerships, and wellness initiatives that support not only her business but also the broader hospitality industry. For her, success is not measured in numbers, but in impact.

LOOKING FORWARD

The future of Lawson Street Group is as inspiring as its beginnings. With each new event, Danielle and her team continue to raise the standard for what catering can be; creative, soulful, and unforgettable. Her guiding principle, “A Passion for Food & People,” remains the heartbeat of the company and the promise behind every plate.

THE GREENBRIER

There’s a certain kind of magic that descends upon the Allegheny Mountains when winter arrives. The kind that makes twinkling lights sparkle a little brighter and fires crackle a little warmer. At The Greenbrier, that magic transforms America’s Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, into a holiday wonderland where traditions old and new come alive, inviting guests to truly come “Home for the Holidays.”

From the moment you step through the grand front entrance, festooned in garland and ribbons, the scent of pine and gingerbread fills the air. Every hallway glows with the warm light of chandeliers reflecting off crimson and emerald décor, and the energy of the season is unmistakable, joyous, elegant, and undeniably Greenbrier.

The celebration begins in December with Weekends With Santa, a beloved tradition that captures the spirit of the season for guests of all ages. Each weekend brings a carefully curated mix of classic fun and grown-up indulgence, from bourbon, cocktails and wine tastings, to gingerbread

house and wreath-making workshops. Families wander the resort grounds on festive scavenger hunts or gather for heartwarming photo opportunities beneath towering Christmas trees.

But the true highlight comes every December Saturday evening, when guests gather for the Tree Lighting Ceremony on the front lawn. Children squeal with delight as Santa himself arrives to give the command to“light up The Greenbrier,”and suddenly, the historic façade shines under thousands of sparkling bulbs. With carolers singing and cookies in hand, it’s a moment that captures the essence of holiday nostalgia; timeless, joyful and utterly enchanting.

When the week of Christmas finally arrives, The Greenbrier feels like something from a storybook. Time-honored traditions, including cookie and craft workshops, elegant dinners, cantatas and the ceremonial lighting of the yule log, fill the days with festive cheer. Guests who book the Christmas Package enjoy a daily breakfast buffet in the Main Dining Room,

where holiday music drifts through the same elegant space that has served generations of distinguished guests since 1913. A resort credit included in the package invites even more exploration, from fine dining and spa treatments to a long list of winter activities.

And when it comes to activities, The Greenbrier doesn’t disappoint. With more than 55 indoor and outdoor experiences, every guest can find their perfect way to celebrate the season. Lace up your skates for a spin under the stars at the outdoor rink, or bundle up for a carriage ride or sleigh ride, if the snow obliges, through 11,000 scenic acres. For thrill-seekers, off-road driving in a Jeep Rubicon or Polaris RZR offers an unforgettable winter adventure, while those seeking tranquility can cast a line along Howard’s Creek or unwind at the world-famous mineral spa. Indoors, families challenge one another in the bowling alley or tackle an escape room, while shooters stay warm at the heated 5-stand at The Greenbrier Gun Club.

Of course, the season wouldn’t be complete without a grand finale, and The Greenbrier has been welcoming the new year in style for more than a century. This year’s New Year’s celebration includes a performance of The Nutcracker Ballet, family pickleball tournaments, cocktail mixology classes, a festive fun run and an elegant dinner leading up to the Countdown to 2026. As the clock strikes midnight, guests raise their glasses, the band strikes up a lively tune, and the ballroom comes alive with laughter, music and memories that will last long after the final toast.

At The Greenbrier, the holidays aren’t just celebrated, they’re cherished. Whether you’re skating under the lights, sipping bourbon by the fire or watching Santa light the great tree, one thing is certain: there’s no place quite like“Home for the Holidays."

ASK THE VET:

“Which Holiday Foods Are Dangerous for My Dog?”

Q: We love to include our pets in holiday festivities, but I keep hearing that certain foods can be dangerous. What should we avoid sharing, and what’s safe?

A: The holidays bring family, food, and plenty of opportunities for pets to sneak a treat — but not everything on the table is safe for them. A few common foods can cause serious illness, even in small amounts.

Safer ways to celebrate:

Offer a special pet treat instead — a few bites of plain cooked turkey breast, pumpkin purée, or their favorite kibble served in a festive bowl. Keeping guests aware and trash cans secured goes a long way.

If your pet eats something they shouldn’t, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (888-426-4435) right away. Early care makes all the difference.

In this special issue, we invite you behind the pages for a glimpse into the lives of the people who help bring every story to light, and to discover what brings warmth, joy, and heartfelt meaning to their holiday season.

Bianca Bain Villegas | Editor

For my family, the holidays begin the moment we start decorating. We unwrap cherished heirlooms, retell the same beloved stories, and laugh through familiar songs. Together we trim the Victorian styled tree in Crystal and candles, and our big outdoor display, done with joy and love, becomes our gift to neighbors and anyone passing by, sharing in the season’s joy.

Anicia Juarez | Marketing Manager

My favorite part of the holidays is getting everyone in the kitchen together. There’s something special about cooking with family, all of us crowded around the stove, catching up and laughing. And when my college friends are back in town, we always make time to meet up, it’s the best way to reconnect and remember why the holidays feel like home.

Adam Taylor | Sales Manager

For me, the holidays are all about family, laughter, and tradition. You’ll usually find me with a cup of cocoa in hand and ice hockey on the TV, surrounded by holiday lights, my lovely wife, and kids, exactly how it should be. Every year, we also keep our favorite tradition alive by taking a group photo in front of the fireplace with my extended family in Canada, a simple moment that means the world to us.

Mindy Toran |  Writer

One of my favorite holiday traditions is getting together with extended family on Thanksgiving. My aunt and uncle always host a big smorgasbord-style buffet and family and friends get together to relax, catch up and get a jump on the holiday season.

Marie Robey Wood |  Writer

My favorite holiday traditions definitely center around Christmas. Every year I enjoy seeing my two grandchildren relive the Nativity in their school play, and I also enjoy my large family’s gathering every Christmas Eve at my brother’s house as we enjoy his famous lobster bisque soup. However my absolute favorite gathering is Christmas Day, after we’ve exchanged gifts and gone to church, when we gather with our immediate family to enjoy an early Christmas dinner at a nearby favorite eatery.

David Robert Lambert |  Writer

Dave is retired, a freelance writer, and a certified pickleball coach. For the holidays, he and his wife Deborah have two favorites: exploring Colonial Williamsburg and visiting family in Pennsylvania. They enjoy 6 weeks of vacation, travelling the world. Their 2025 highlight was a trip to the Galápagos Islands.

Debra Wallace |  Writer

Debra Wallace is an award-winning feature writer with 20+ years of experience, known for her heartfelt copy that focuses on celebrities, local heroes, and special needs parenting. Debra and her 19-yearold son appreciate their Hanukkah traditions of lighting the menorah, exchanging gifts, and eating Debra’s scrumptious homemade latkes (potato pancakes) served with apple sauce and sour cream.

Deborah Blumberg |  Writer

My favorite holiday tradition is making homemade latkes, or potato pancakes, with my family during Chanukah. The latkes make the whole kitchen smell delicious as my family and I fry them to a golden brown. Some of us like to eat them with just applesauce on top, others with applesauce and sour cream.

Erica Land | Photographer

My favorite holiday tradition is simply being so to family. We take walks, vacations, and every year, I take a family portrait. It’s the one photo I never miss. Watching the changes over time reminds me how lucky we are to grow, love, and come home to each other.

Drew Xeron | Photographer

Having a three- and six-year-old makes Christmas morning pure magic in our house. The kids race downstairs in their pajamas, eyes wide with wonder at what Santa has brought. I even film myself on the Ring cam, dressed as Santa sneaking in gifts, and show them later. It’s the happiest I’ve ever been.

Dr. Ceylon Mitchell, II | Photographer

For the holidays, my wife and I love spending Christmas at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor with our two young boys. From tempting treats, holiday shows, festive activities, and colossal ice sculptures, it’s our favorite way to create lasting holiday memories together!

Ryan Corvello | Photographer

One of my favorite holiday traditions is to cook a really thick and juicy steak on Christmas Eve. My family is a big sports family so, NFL games are always on after a peaceful morning of opening up gifts with Christmas Vacation on in the background.
