February 2024 PUBLISHER
KC Cole | KC.Cole@citylifestyle.com
February brings with it a blend of warmth and anticipation. Cozy nights spent in the comfort of our homes, tender moments of remembrance for Black History, heartfelt connections during Valentine’s Day dates, and the thrilling energy of Super Bowl Sunday. We sincerely hope that the pages of our magazine will serve as a guiding light, helping you celebrate and cherish the wonders of our local community. As we navigate the delicate balance between the lingering chill of winter and the promise of spring, we implore you to pause and reflect. Take a moment to come together with the cherished souls in your life, whether they be your neighbors, friends, or the vibrant tapestry that makes up your community. Let us not forget the importance of supporting our local businesses, for what we can achieve when united is far greater than what we can accomplish alone. Within the stories we share month after month, we witness the extraordinary power of collaboration and unity. We are honored to be a part of the life you are building, no matter its shape or form. Our deepest aspiration is to ignite a fire within you, inspiring you to embrace every aspect of your journey with renewed love and passion. May this February be a month of joy, growth, and boundless love. Happy February!

NOW: Fischer's last hurrah is ZivZo Legacy Video's (2022) Photo Credit: Jack Hartzman
ARTICLE BY CHRISTOPHER HESS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
"So, you want the why." It didn't take long for Benson Fischer (known to most as Benny), CEO and chief strategist of ZivZo, to understand the assignment of our conversation. As a man with more than 45 years of entrepreneurial experience who created dozens of businesses across an unfathomably broad spectrum of industries, one can't help but consider the source of such untappable ambition. Examining Fischer's history breaks and broadens preconceived notions of the quintessential businessman. Perseverance, while at the heart of any enduring enterprise, is lifted with artistry and humor. Furthermore, the cliche of capitalistic urge for self-aggrandizement is replaced with Fischer's earnest responsibility to his clients. "We can’t help anyone’s business until we know everything about it,” he says. “Once we learn about the business, we know where we need to go." Client, Rob Huffman of Curbs Gone Wild, attests to ZivZo’s thorough approach, calling it the best investment he’s ever made for his business. “With their help, I have advanced my company more in eight months than in the previous 20 years,” he says. “Ben is an absolute master in marketing, but has taken a genuine interest in the success of my business, acting as a mentor, business consultant, and friend.”
“AN EMOTIONAL CONNECTION WITH EVERY CLIENT IS KEY. I FEEL A HUGE OBLIGATION AND COMMITMENT … IF I CAN help SOMEONE’S BUSINESS grow AND FEEL LIKE I HAD PART OF THEIR SUCCESS, THAT IS everything TO ME.”

"An emotional connection with every client is key. I feel a huge obligation and commitment … if I can help someone's business grow and feel like I had a part in their success, that is everything to me." "My excitement is all about how far I can take a client's business," Fischer says. ZivZo, a multi-fastened advertising agency operating across an array of mixed-media realms, is the result of Fischer's years of experience. While the industries in his catalog of business ventures are dissimilar, the throughline has been his unwavering vision. "What you're selling first is trust,” he explains “If people don’t trust you, they’ll never buy your products or use your services." Part of Fischer's enthusiasm grew around ZivZo when he realized its impact would be tied to those relationships in the community he'd spent a lifetime cultivating. ZivZo provides services to a dozen clients in Potomac and the client base extends throughout the country. The marketing agency is built upon its technical prowess and lives and breathes off the care Fischer exhibits for his clients. This adoration is exemplified in the company's newest offering, Legacy Videos. Legacy Videos are mini-documentaries giving people the opportunity to tell their life stories. Loaded with family memorabilia, they’re designed for future generations to get to know their family's ancestors. Fischer describes ZivZo as his "last hurrah" and reiterates that this is where his collected knowledge and wellspring of energy will be focused. Still, he is happy to remember the lessons he learned along his unpredictable path. "You learn more from a bad deal than a good deal,” he says. “When I tell someone
that something they're doing isn't going to work, it's because I've tried it myself three or four times." So, what makes an entrepreneur? According to Fischer, it's confidence in knowing what won't work as much as what will, an unbreakable resilience amidst the most turbulent setbacks, and an emphasis on relationships. "We make your business OUR business," he says.

Fischer started ZivZo with a desire to see others benefit from his wealth of experience. When someone engages ZivZo, they not only get a focused marketing, advertising, and video production agency, but they also get 45 years of business experience advice at no additional cost. The baseline offerings include traditional and digital marketing, graphic design, social media strategy, video production, video animation, lead generation, SEO, website design, and much more. With glowing testimonials from customers nationally and internationally, ZivZo is the greater Potomac's leading marketing agency.

S I M PL I F Y T H E c o l l e ge p ro c e s s A Potomac-region business takes the stress out of tutoring, exams, and college applications ARTICLE BY REBECCA HASTINGS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The path to college can be overwhelming, but students and parents don’t need to go it alone. With resources and experts like the team at No Anxiety Prep, families have someone to help. Whether planning ahead for a middle school student, applying to college or graduate school, or needing tutoring and help with exams, finding the right support is key.
APPLIQUIRKTION BY NO ANXIETY PREP PRESIDENT NIKKEE PORCARO
For many students, the college essay is the most dreaded part of their application. It can be hard to know what to write and how to stand out. Porcaro’s college admissions handbook, Appliquirktion, is all about helping students do just that. With more than 50 successful sample essays, this easy-to-understand guide takes the guesswork out of the college essay process to help students show who they are. And that’s what colleges are truly looking for.
KEY STEPS STUDENTS CAN TAKE TO STAND OUT
• Use strengths: With many schools being test optional, students can choose whether or not to share their scores. • Be a leader: Highlight leadership positions both in school and the community. • Get involved: Show the different ways you are involved in your school and beyond. Extracurriculars help schools see a more complete picture of students. • Aim higher: Participate in internships, research opportunities, and AP/college classes.
THE SURPRISING SECRETS TO SUCCESS
It’s not all about grades. Clients at No Anxiety Prep consistently share that the most significant part of working with their team is how empowering it is. It helps students feel confident and take ownership of their education. Whether they come for tutoring or seeking help applying to law school, the confidence boost motivates them to pursue their dreams.
L E A R N M O R E : As a first-generation college student from New Jersey, Nikkee Porcaro knows how daunting the application process can be. After obtaining her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and Master’s degrees at Purdue and Harvard, Porcaro helps students in the Potomac region find academic success. Calvert, a Maryland native whose own wedding was featured in Town & Country magazine, knows what she’s doing; the kind, competent, creative entrepreneur launched her Potomac-based event design and wedding planning company in 2012 and has been producing seamless soirees for Potomac residents and beyond ever since. Calvert and her team diligently work with couples through every step of the wedding planning process, from selecting a venue to full wedding weekend management. She typically meets with couples right after their engagement and before a venue has been chosen. “This allows us to suggest the best venue for the ideal setting and experience they want to provide to their guests,” Calvert says. “Whether it be a beautiful tented wedding in
the backyard or an exquisite destination, the venue will be the backdrop to the entire wedding weekend.” She’s worked on events at locations ranging from Italian castles to Potomac family homes. A Cristina Calvert event is quite the opposite of a formulaic wedding—it’s a personalized feast for the senses that guests remember with awe long after the day (or weekend!) is wrapped. This is because Calvert taps into all the senses when CONTINUED >

creating the wedding weekend, considering everything from what the guests will eat, see, smell, touch, and hear. “We work closely with the culinary team to create a customized menu that reflects the couple's favorite foods and drinks; we bring to life designs through flowers and custom-built items to show the couple's sense of style; we encourage signature scents to be

placed around the venue so guests associate the lovely scent with the incredible memories from the weekend; we curate beautiful textiles used throughout the reception to provide a residential and welcoming atmosphere; and we source the very best live entertainment to surprise and delight your guests throughout the evening,” Calvert explains. Her weddings are both memorable and timeless with details that are elegant, not overpowering. The details are nods to things that truly represent the couple. For example, “a couple that loves to travel together and has been to Morocco and India… we might use those really exciting spices that are found in those countries into the foods that we serve during the cocktail hour.” To get to know her clients, she asks them questions like: Where are your favorite places you've traveled to? What is your favorite date night spot? Your favorite surprise moment? The answers factor into building the design of the wedding weekend. And the weekend is emphasized because weddings, especially after the pandemic, are often
celebrations that last several days with a number of events like a welcome cocktail reception, after-wedding brunch, outing to a sporting event or cultural institution, and so on. Regardless of the types of events the clients would like to include, Calvert makes sure the entire weekend is cohesive in its design. She also ensures the couple gets plenty of time with VIP guests. Calvert provides a curated guest experience from “the moment they touch down until the moment they depart.” She prioritizes thoughtful, guest-focused details — something as simple as providing snacks on a long bus ride to a venue can be a powerful gesture. Calvert and her team can also advise on questions of wedding etiquette, wedding customs, or planning bridal showers and luncheons, essentially guiding clients through the entire engagedto-married process so nothing falls through the cracks. Even post-nuptials, Calvert, whose favorite part of the job is her special connection with her clients, embodies true commitment. She stays in touch and has been known to plan other milestone events for couples over the years, like celebrating their first home together or the birth of a child. But first: the exquisite wedding of their dreams.

SCOTLAND A.M.E.’s enduring SPIR IT HISTORIC CHURCH UNDERGOES RECONSTRUCTION, IT CONTINUES TO INSPIRE IN THE POTOMAC COMMUNITY

Scotland African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is not just a spiritual home for its congregants, but a lesson to the community in history and hope. “Most African Americans were either brought up in the church or witnessed their parents’ or grandparents’ faith. Because of this, they will always know that the church is what kept them and will keep us,” explains Bernard Scott, who is a member of Scotland’s second century campaign to make sure no one forgets his congregation’s struggles and triumphs. The Church was founded in 1906 as the Scotland Warner Church by Rev. J.W. Ricks. At that time, the original land mass of the Scotland community was comprised of over 400 acres and more than 100 families of enslaved people, according to Scott. Today, he says, there are 100 townhouses of which 25 are owned by descendants of those slaves. “Descendants who have been scattered throughout the county and state and across the country in some cases, form a diaspora, who still consider Scotland their home, and the church, their home church,” he says. This is a special place for homecoming; however, it is undergoing major repairs, both to its original structure and the land on which it stands, which has been damaged due to flooding. Under the leadership of Evalina Huggins, the church’s pastor, the “Friends of Scotland” $10 million dollar fundraising campaign has inspired people of all races and backgrounds to throw their support behind the church’s reconstruction. They hope it will be completed by late 2024— in time for the 100th anniversary of the church’s affiliation with the A.M.E. Zion Conference.
“The restoration of the church...will allow the Scotland community to move forward into the next century with hope and a promise of a better future” — Bernard Scott Scott says that this effort is not only about building a church, but also including Scotland in the greater community. “We want to be involved with all things Potomac, instead of being a community isolated.”
Scotland A.M.E.'s Potomac Day Parade float placed number one, which Scott says is evidence that their church is “a symbol of unity."
