A Time to Explore (And Get Lost) We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit, it's a trap I fall into sometimes too. The trap is believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the cost-benefit analysis. But when I step back and think about that approach, it feels like a really sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must make time for exploring, for seeing new places, for trying new things, for being a beginner, and even for getting lost. It's those unstructured and open-ended times where space is made for new connections, friendships to be fostered, and trust to be built. Over the last few months, I've analyzed my relationship with my kids, how our family operates as a unit, and what we love doing together. My first thought was the things that I don't love spending time on. For our family — it’s screens. For yours, it may be too many busy weeknights away from home or not enough dinners around the table together. I've noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” don't have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail, or going out on a mission to find a fun pizza place we've never been to before in a different part of town. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular cadence of daily life. Lose yourself on a trail or in a good read. Book that trip you’ve been dreaming about. Make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on your calendar of priorities. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to — and I say this with all the warmth in my heart — get lost!

ready to let your hair down, venture out to dinner at the Half Shell Raw Bar and maybe a show at Aqua; or visit the dessert restaurant called Better than Sex, all of which are close by to the resort’s central location. The resort also arranges guided tours, notably the Island Tales Golf Cart Tour, which offers a look at the historical sites and unique streets of Key West. No stay at the resort would be complete without the Jet Ski Island Tour, which offers a unique view of Key West as you skim the Gulf of Mexico’s beautiful water. One of the most exciting activities I participated in was the Key West Island Tales Tours with owner Amy Andrade. It’s listed as number five of 100 in the “The New Key West Bucket List” book. This custom -designed tour is a must during your visit. Topping off my too-brief stay was a catamaran sunset sail. The party cruise was replete with champagne, chilled beers, soft drinks, and bites. Overall, it was the perfect way to cap off an awesome vacation.

“Do everything or nothing at all” is the motto for the newly renovated Southernmost Beach Resort in Florida’s Key West. Both ideas resonated with me and, during my four-day visit at the resort, I spent time seeing and doing what the area had to offer while happily relaxing and doing nothing at other times. Located at the southern tip of Duval Street in Key West, Southernmost Beach offers something for everyone’s mood. For a laid-back day, you can sit near the Pineapple Pool Bar and sip a caipirinha. There are plenty of delicious local specialties served at the Southernmost Beach Café, the resort’s signature restaurant. I enjoyed the superbly prepared conch fritters, fresh fish sandwiches, and jumbo shrimp. Spa treatments are a tempting treat and yoga classes on the beach help work off a few calories. Did you know that Key West has the most bars of any town in the country? Or that it’s closer to Cuba than Miami? When you’re

Summer Camps for Kids to Explore

A Roundup of Local Camps Available for Advanced Registration Ahh, summer camp! A time for both parents and kids to keep busy without all the demands and structure of school weighing down on them. Camp is all about exploring favorite pastimes, learning new skills, meeting new friends and, maybe best of all, no homework! In our area, there are so many formats to choose from: sleepaway camp, day camp, and even online camp. From swimming camp, theater camp, STEM camp, cooking camp to baseball camp – the list is endless. High school students looking to acquire new skills can enjoy classes in robotics or coding. There are also camps which include a variety of game development and computer programming. Specialty camps let campers design their own curriculum – for example a chess wizard can learn skills that will last a lifetime. For families who like to plan ahead, a number of camps offer summer programs where students can explore. Some of the programs we surveyed include child care centers and many have multiple locations. Consider this small sampling of what Potomac camps have to offer and get ready to enjoy the summer.

Georgetown Hill School Georgetown Hill Potomac Village location offers camps for twos, threes, pre-K and transitional-K. Its preschool summer camp offers various themes and fun topics with a different focus each day. The summer camp for school-aged children includes focuses in theater, sports, science, and the great outdoors. In addition, campers will enjoy weekly field trips and pool visits. Camps run weekly, starting June 19-August 18.

Academy Child Development Center Academy’s Summer in the K.A.V.E. (Kid’s ActiVe Enrichment) program offers challenging (and seriously fun) immersive learning experiences for children entering Grades K-5. Passover begins on the evening of April 5, and, as with all holidays, the meal is at the heart of this spiritual and familial celebration. The meal, or Seder, is not only meant for feasting-but for remembering as it’s symbolic of the journey of the Jewish people from bondage to freedom. Striking the right balance between tasty and traditional can be a challenge with various dietary restrictions, but every dish tells a different part of the Passover story. The biggest obstacle is the ban of leavened bread, or chometz. Chometz is bread made from flour (wheat, oat, spelt, rye, or barley) that has been in contact with water for more than 18 minutes and therefore has a chance to rise. Before Passover, families cleanse their homes of all leavened bread in honor of the ancient Hebrews who fled Egypt in haste before their bread could rise. Andrew Dana and Daniela Moreira, the owners of Call Your Mother delis, have clever-and zany-solutions with their high holiday spins. Their Passover tacos, a favorite from their memories with Jewish families in Florida and Argentina, are the perfect diversion from the normal, while adhering to the norms. Call Your Mother has fun pre-made Passover taco kits featuring pastrami, or cauliflower for vegetarians. They are served with kosher tortillas. For strict traditionalists, a Seder dinner starts with matzo ball soup, gefilte fish and a salad— often times made with farfel, or crushed matzo. “I had a customer make me swear that we don’t use bread crumbs in our salad,” says Sam Lerner who runs Attman’s Deli, named Best Jewish Deli by Washington Jewish Week. His staples like chopped liver, potato kugel, latkes, and Passover rolls are prepared at the deli in preparation for the holiday. Shopping at a Jewish deli is especially important this time of year as most supermarkets only offer gefilte fish, for example, in cans or jars. At Brooklyn’s Deli, family owned and operated in Potomac, you can find chef Guy Brandt’s popular brisket, a Passover mainstay, because it’s a kosher meat that can feed a crowd. Family recipes such as a braised brisket with carrots and onions are passed from one generation to the next. Alongside the main course, a Seder also includes vegetables, as well as matzo-based recipes like Passover popovers.

For dessert, Lerner’s standbys are his flourless chocolate torte, Passover cheesecake with a toasted matzo crust, Passover strawberry shortcake, and almond and chocolate macaroons, which he adds are “fresh not canned.” Also not to be missed are Call Your Mother’s matzo-brittle topped with caramel and pecans. Of course, no meal is complete without elegant wine offerings. Each participant in the Seder drinks four cups of wine throughout the evening at fixed points, which represent the four promises of redemption associated with the exodus. Parthenon Restaurant is a popular Greek restaurant located on Connecticut Avenue in Northwest DC, just south of Chevy Chase Circle. The tenured establishment observes the Greek Orthodox Easter in a big way with hundreds of patrons flocking there to celebrate the holiday annually. But first, a little background on the restaurant: The Parthenon, named after the famous architectural wonder in Athens, was founded in 1989 by Pete Gouskos and Steve Tsiolis. The owners take pride in its authentic Greek cuisine. It’s considered to be a “neighborhood restaurant” by faithful regulars — well-known patrons including CNN’s Jake Tapper, Chris and Kathleen Matthews, and DC’s mayor Muriel Bowser can often be spotted in the dining room. Easter is the most important feast in the Greek Orthodox Church— this year it falls on Sunday, April 16th. Observant Greek Orthodox Christians fast for 40 days leading up to the holiday, giving up many foods including meat and dairy. It’s also a time for intensified prayer and alms giving. So once Easter rolls around, the Greek community is ready to let loose and have fun. After mass ends at midnight, Greek Orthodox church goers pour into the Parthenon. Normally, between 80 to 120 people dine immediately after leaving church, but during the day on Easter Sunday, and in good weather, when patrons can eat outside, that number can swell to upwards of 700 visitors. The restaurant’s signature Easter menu features baby spring lamb on an outdoor spit over charcoal, pand traditional soup called magiritsa, fresh seafood, (including crab cakes and whole broiled rockfish), and traditional Greek desserts including baklava and galaktoboureko. Gregorio’s Trattoria is a locally owned and family-operated Italian restaurant group with locations in Potomac (Cabin John Village), Bethesda (Sumner Place), and Reston (North Point Village) with plans to open their fourth location in Park Potomac before year-end. Greg Kahn, with his father Donald, runs the business with its inspiration drawn from Italian culture “the way people come together around food.” Gregorio’s goal was to be a

restaurant where people want to get together while cherishing time with friends and family. All three locations are a reflection of the community, seniors, empty nesters, families with kids in college, families with young children, and single people. The talented kitchen staff is trained to take the time to make authentic and fresh Italian recipes (many passed down to Chef Carmine by his grandmother in Italy). If you ask almost any Italian

you will hear that’s where the best recipes come from especially where the sauces (gravy) and meatballs are concerned. As Greg stated, we start with whole tomatoes and fresh ingredients. We make food the way your grandparents would make it if they had the time or access to our ingredients. Gregorio’s carefully sources every ingredient and never makes changes based on cost savings. Picky eaters and those with dietary restrictions are welcome. An extensive Gluten-free Menu is available. Substitutions are also welcomed, and not frowned upon. Greg and Donald want their guests to be comfortable knowing most of their requests will be readily accommodated. Many of Gregorio’s guests are regulars ordering from a diverse menu of pastas, pizzas, salads, steaks, and both veal and pork chops. At Gregorio’s it is common to see friends, neighbors, and maybe even a celebrity. Donald’s fraternity brother from the University of Maryland, Larry David, “curbed his appetite” when visiting a few months ago. Size matters at Gregorio’s. Portions are more than generous with most guests taking home leftovers to enjoy for a second time. Gregorio’s large pizzas are 18” beating out other restaurants who call their 16” pizzas “extra large.” Greg wants everyone to know that an 18” pizza is actually 26% larger than a 16” and should serve up to two additional people. He is also proud that size matters at the bar too. Gregorio’s offers hefty pours of wine and doesn’t skimp on liquor. Greg and Donald believe in the importance of community. They support local fundraisers, schools, churches, and synagogues to raise money and bring attention to their causes. The effort is meant to “take care of those who take care of us”. Donald currently serves on the board of the American Breast Cancer Foundation, which ran an extremely successful fundraising event at all Gregorio’s locations in December. The restaurant also has a mutually rewarding “Rewards Program” for frequent diners, offering a reward of $10 off every $100 spent on a future visit. There is also a $10 bonus for signing up. Greg lives in Potomac with his wife Kate, and three sons Bob, 8, Nathan, 6, and Gordon, 3. As he continues to build the Gregorio’s Trattoria brand and reputation, his commitment to his family and their community always comes first.

“The Ferrari is a dream. People dream of owning this special vehicle and for most, it will remain a dream apart from those lucky few,” entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari said.
