Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of travel destinations, activities to enjoy, and ways to unwind and relax. Although the “lazy days of summer” aren't always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and revel in some of the simple pleasures like time spent with family. It's a bonus when you can experience a faraway destination with those closest to you. In this issue, we highlight two jaw-dropping destinations great for families and/or couples. They are both beautiful in color and culture, and certainly top the bucket list. First, we take you to our cover destination forty miles off the coast of Venezuela. Curaçao is an actual hidden gem chock full of adventure and fascinating history. Next, we head southeast to Curaçao's well-traveled, neighboring Dutch Caribbean island, Aruba. There we visit the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino– the resort that has it all. Home to crystal clear and almost motionless water, the property is situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Palm Beach. In this issue, not only do we share these dream destinations to cure your case of wanderlust, but we also share some of the happenings around Potomac. Why Every Young Family Needs an Estate Plan Young people often believe they do not need a Will because they have not yet acquired a certain level of assets, but every young family should have a basic estate plan in place. Through a Will, a person can provide for the disposition of their property upon their death, and more importantly, they can appoint a guardian for their minor child(ren). If you fail to appoint a Guardian, the Court will intervene upon your death and decide who the Guardian will be. In addition, if you leave behind minor children, you may want their share of your estate to be held in a trust for their benefit until they reach a certain age. Since minor individuals cannot inherit property under the law, without this provision, any assets left to a minor will be subject to another Court proceeding by which a Guardian is appointed for your child(ren)’s property until the child attains the age of majority. For these reasons alone, it is important to have an estate plan. Sip – Zip – Zen – Aruba The Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino Has It All You won’t be disappointed after a getaway to the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino. Situated in one of the most beautiful areas of the island’s Palm Beach area, the property is home to crystal clear, almost motionless water. Although a magazine publisher by day, by night I am an avid world traveler, foodie and fun seeker who appreciates sound service, and luxurious touches. My goal for this Aruba retreat was quite simple: indulge and enjoy in everything the Marriott had to offer. SIP I enjoyed a delectable empanada cooking class (Aruban Pastechi) with the hotel’s head chef and a fabulous mixology lesson with the bartenders on the property #sipzipzenaruba. Concocting the Elite Martini was a fun experience that came with a “happy ending” when the frothy foam was transformed into a 3D image of my face using a specialized machine. If you are a bourbon fan like me, you’ll savor the Smoking Old Fashioned mixed up by Elijah Craig, and presented it in a literal smoking box. Its unmatched, distinct taste made it the best Old Fashioned I’d ever had. Marriott did not fall short on cuisine options either. There are many delectable restaurant choices, including wellknown Ruth’s Chris Steak House. The resort’s pop-up beach

restaurant, Atardi, offered front row seats to a stunning sunset. With my feet cushioned by soft white sands, I indulged in lobster tail, octopus, and fresh bass straight from the sea. Food fans, if you find yourself exploring off property, try locally-owned fresh seafood restaurant the West Deck. The owners exercise great pride in their food and service. ZIP If you like action, I recommend taking an exhilarating De Palm UTV Tour of Aruba’s desert side for breathtaking magazine cover-worthy views. ZEN The Marriott’s Mandara Spa had many services to choose from, of which I selected the Balinese massage, which included a light stretch, acupressure, reflexology, and aromatherapy. My masseuse quickly took me away from negative thoughts, lingering stress and revived me with a sense of renewal. With its close proximity to the property, the De Palm Sunset Sail proved to be a wonderful way to deepen the zen after a memorable massage. Smooth sailing, light music, beverages, appetizers, and picturesque, mango-hued sunset. Simply beautiful! Overall Aruba is a must-visit location. The Marriott is wonderful for any occasion, family, girl trips, and couples can take advantage of the Tradewinds Club, a premium, adults-only experience. So, what are you waiting for?

“Where is Curaçao?” Once my trip was booked to check out the autonomous Dutch Caribbean island nation under the Kingdom of Netherlands, I heard this question from friends, families and strangers no less than 20 times. Truth be told, I too was unfamiliar with the destination before a heavy scrolling session on Google maps. Forty miles off the coast of Venezuela and southeast of the well-traveled island destination of its sister island, Aruba, Curaçao is an actual hidden gem and climate wise, it doesn’t get any better. Situated outside of the tropical hurricane belt, its unique geographical location also makes it a great place to visit any time of year. It’s a bonus that a steady stream of Northeast passage winds help to make even the hottest days on Curaçao feel nothing short of pleasant. A common follow up query: “Curaçao– like the drink?” Yes, as it turns out! The electric blue liqueur made from dried peels of the island’s native laraha fruit (essentially a bitter orange), is a popular libation. Cocktail enthusiasts can visit Chobolobo Liqueur Factory to learn about the distillation process and then shake up their own Curaçao-laced cocktail to enjoy. But beyond optimal geography and tasty refreshments, Curaçao offers a healthy dose of culture, scenery and a richly layered history. Add to the mix: great food, caring people and fun seaside activities – an exhilarating trip awaits. Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of Curaçao is the role language plays, made true by its dynamic history (it has been colonized by various European nations over the last few centuries). Of the island nation’s 165,000 person population, you will be hard pressed to find an individual who doesn’t speak Dutch, English and the country’s signature language, Papiamentu– a blended Creole stew of Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish. In fact, most residents are fluent in a fourth language because teenagers are required to take German or French in highschool. The prevalence of English speakers (and wide acceptance of the U.S. dollar) makes traveling around the island quite easy, while the prevalence of Dutch, vis a vis tourists and locals, can make it feel like you’re in Copenhagen.

Speaking of language, there is a linguistics footnote that my group’s tour guide was quick to mention– the Papiamentu term of endearment, “dushi” (pronounced Doo-she), has no relation to the American definition of the word! As for Curaçao’s colorful colonial architecture, its origin story dates back to 1817 when the governor at the time, Albert Kikkert, complained that the island’s bright whitewashed buildings were causing him headaches. He declared that splashes of color would quell strained eyes and brighten the moods of the island’s residents. Although it was later learned that Kikkert had a stake in a paint company on the island, the bright facades have become a signature element of Curaçao’s spirited identity. Visitors will want to rent a car to explore various corners of the island. Ride sharing services haven’t made it to Curaçao yet, but tourists are encouraged to download the 24-7 Taxi app. Included at the top of your itinerary should be Shete Boka National Park on the Western end of the island where turquoise waves swirl and

The far flung beach cove, with its blazing white sand and bright topaz water, is a gift to the senses. Curaçao’s food scene is an exciting one as many natives who have made pilgrimages to Holland have returned equipped with European tips and tricks under their belts. A few noteworthy haunts: for a contemporary spin on Caribbean cuisine try Sal, for a casual lunch where classics are done right De Broeders and finally, for the most authentic culinary experience on island, look no further than Purunchi, where you can at once nosh on the fresh catch of the day and watch fisherman pull in their latest haul. There are a range of luxury properties on the island, and the decision on which you choose should solely be based on your itinerary preferences. By my standards, a perfect trip would consist of a few days in the nightlife district of Pietermaai followed by a detox and pampered stay on the East side of the island. Since returning from my amazing Curaçao adventure, I find myself naturally initiating conversation about the island nation with anyone who will listen. So much so, that I fear the under-the-radar destination won’t stay that way for long.

Misconception #1:

If I brush harder, I won’t need a dentist. Dr. George says: Brushing too hard can damage your enamel (your teeth’s natural protective covering). Or, use an electric toothbrush to ensure the right amount of pressure is applied.

Misconception #2:

It’s ok to chew ice.

Dr. George says: Chewing ice can crack and chip teeth. The damage is irreversible and may require a composite filling, crown, root canal, or losing the tooth. Instead, drink water with a straw or chew sugar-free gum.

Misconception #3:

I can skip dental appointments. Dr. George says: We recommend a teeth cleaning and oral examination every six months. Once plaque hardens into tartar, it can only be removed by a dental professional. Left untreated, tartar buildup increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Any conversation regarding Schaeffer Piano Company in Rockville will likely include some talk about the history of the organization. After all, we’re talking about 121 years of history. Rick Schaeffer is the third-generation owner of the company that his grandfather founded in 1901. Like the pre-owned Steinway grand pianos and new models from other manufacturers available for sale at Schaeffer’s, some things in the piano business, it turns out, have staying power. Take, for instance, the player piano. Not to be confused with a piano player, a player piano (also known as a pianola) is a self-playing piano. Once upon a time, player pianos contained a mechanism that operated the piano via music recorded on perforated paper. Today’s versions are more likely to use a computerized digital interface. Back in the day, 16-year-old Rick worked by his dad’s side restoring pianos across the DMV and installing player pianos. “We did all the Shakey’s Pizza places in the area in the 1960s,” Rick recalls. “Then, when the Sting movie came out, we sold more player pianos that year than ever,” he adds, referring to the 1973 film. The movie and its ragtime soundtrack were hugely popular and for people who wanted to recreate that sound in their homes, a player piano did the trick. Since that time the Schaeffer Piano Company has thrived and grown as they rebuilt, restored and repaired – as well as sold – pianos but, Rick says, “Between the 1970s and today, we only installed a few player pianos each year.” This year, the Schaeffer Piano Company is once again installing player pianos like crazy. Rick says player pianos help people address a bucket-list item of learning to play the piano without actually having to learn to play. “Maybe their kids had years of lessons. Then, the kids leave for college and people still want to hear the piano,” he says. Schaeffer’s can install one on nearly any piano, including uprights (if there’s room) and grands. The process begins with cutting a hole. “I sold a Steinway 1901 concert piano,” Rick recalls. “And now I put a huge hole in the bottom to operate the keys for a player piano.” After the install, only the music is noticeable. It’s all controlled from a phone app that includes 3,000 song choices and provides the ability to sing along with words – and artists – that can appear on your TV. Rick says he has even heard murmurs about technology that would create a hologram of someone performing at your piano. “So, you could see Bach while he plays,” Rick says as his voice trails off, imagining the possibilities.
