Dr. Lawrence J. Green, MD, FAAD, runs the Aesthetic & Dermatology Center in Rockville, a one-stop-shop for all aspects of skin care and skin surgery. He explains that his team is comprised of two board-certified dermatologists and a certified aesthetician, who are experts when it comes to skin, hair and nails. He likes to point out that “no other field of medicine covers aesthetic treatments, skin surgery, and advanced care like this!” While he was in medical school at New York Medical College Dr. Green went to see a dermatologist for treatment of his psoriasis, an experience that convinced him to become a dermatologist himself. He followed up his med school degree at the University of California, Irvine, where he completed his residency in dermatology, concentrating on advanced cosmetic skin surgery. After working in Northern Virginia for another dermatologist, he decided to start his own practice in Rockville, serving the Montgomery County community where he lived. The dermatologist keeps a busy schedule traveling, speaking at conferences and conducting media interviews. Recently, on “Good Morning Washington,” he walked viewers through the difference between fillers and botox. When he is not on the road, Dr. Green enjoys unwinding with his wife and their two children. That may include attending a baseball game or Sunday canoe rides on the Potomac River. One interesting aspect of his medical expertise is the role he played in the development and implementation of QWO, the first and only FDA-approved injectable for the treatment of moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. Dr. Green was an advisor to the manufacturer and since its approval, has given lectures to teach and prepare other physicians on how best to use it. Dr. Green also prides himself on being an active member within his community. For the past 20 years he has worked as a volunteer Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the George Washington University School of Medicine helping teach and oversee dermatology trainees. Additionally, he performs skin surgery there once a month, or more if time permits. It’s an experience he describes as “a two-way street,” as the dermatology trainees also teach him. “It’s a way for me to keep up and learn the most advanced skills,” he notes. He has contributed to countless boards and organizations including serving as the past president of the Montgomery County Medical Society and as a member of the Maryland Medical Society Legislative Council. Other memberships include the National Psoriasis Foundation Board and its Medical Board. He is a past board member for the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Dermatology. Outside of dermatology, Dr. Green serves on the Congressional Awards Board, which is the U.S. Congress’ only charitable organization. A believer in using social media as a tool to connect with and educate patients, he posts videos of dermatological procedures on Instagram, Facebook and Tik Tok (@dr.LawrenceGreen). His practice also has a blog - estheticdermatologymd.com/blog/ - that is informative regarding different skin conditions and treatments. One area that distinguishes the Aesthetic & Dermatology Center in Rockville from other offices of its kind is the fact

that they specialize in clinical trials in dermatology. This offers the patients who visit his office access to innovative therapies years before such treatments are available to almost everyone else in the country. “I enjoy being at the forefront of innovation, and am proud to offer it to our patients,” Dr. Green says, adding, “We have pioneered new and longer-lasting botulinum toxin therapies, treatment for submental fat, new ways to use wrinkle fillers, new oral and topical medications for acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, molluscum, dandruff, precancerous growths, and underarm sweating.” Another noteworthy aspect of Dr. Green’s practice is his dedication to patient safety. “About 15 years ago I noticed that many people who were not properly qualified and trained were performing cosmetic medical procedures like Botulinum toxins, wrinkle fillers, chemical peels, lasers, etc. and were harming patients. I asked and then worked with the Maryland Medical Society to help create new safety regulations for Marylanders seeking cosmetic medical treatments,” he explains. With Dr. Green’s contributions, Maryland has become the poster child for patient safety in cosmetic medical procedures that many other states, and even the country of France, have tried to emulate.

Perfection. Along with his wife, Julie, David has four adult daughters and three grandchildren. And, he has Frank– a sixyear-old golden retriever who David considers his best friend. Frank never strays far from his side (David concedes he cannot bring Frank into the courtroom). His convertible Jeep Commander in snazzberry red also makes David happy. “I drive it every day,” he says. “I have the top down, even in the middle of winter. People think I’m crazy. Frank is in the back seat and it’s just fun to drive.” And then there’s his bourbon. As an avid spirits fan for the last 20 years, David says his favorite bourbon is whatever he’s having at the moment. From Bethany Beach to Kentucky, Nashville and Austin, David enjoys discovering new places to share his favorite drink with his favorite people.

A visit to Michael’s office reveals that, in addition to being good at lawyering, the man loves baseball. If you doubt it, the shelf of nodding bobbleheads confirms that it’s true. The den in his home reveals, however, that the shelf in the office is just the beginning. There, visitors marvel at two game-used bases from the Nationals’ 2019 world-series run, jerseys bearing the autographs of Ryan Zimmerman and Anthony Rendon, plus signed bats and baseballs and more bobbleheads. “I’ve been a season-ticket holder since day one, sitting behind the plate in 2005,” Michael says. Of his three grown kids, his daughter is the biggest baseball fan and Michael still enjoys games with her. His sons prefer instead to join Michael at concerts, since music is another of Michael’s favorite distractions. A musician in college, Michael hasn’t picked up his trumpet since law school but his enduring love of music means he’ll happily travel locally or to other states to see his favorite bands, especially when his sons join him. With his wife, Michael might be seen shopping for kayaks since they recently bought a home on the marshy salt pond of Bethany Beach with its own kayak launch and a backyard on the water. The area makes great subject matter for Michael’s other hobby: photography. Describing himself as a “very amateur photographer,” he says he’s been taking photos for years. “We take a lot of hikes on the beach and in the marshes and it’s been amazing for taking photos,” he says, but don’t expect him to display his images, unless, maybe, if he starts taking photos at Nats’ games.

BOB COLLINS OCCUPATION: Co-CIO, Managing Director, and founder of the Collins Investment Group, a division of XML Financial Group, Rockville When Bob was in his 30s, and a self-described “upcoming young wealth advisor,” he convinced his wife, Beth, that “plunking down the money to get in the door at the Four Streams Golf Club in Beallsville, would be good for my career.” He adds, “That was in 1997 and it worked out really well. My passion for golf strengthened and my network of friends and clients developed. This led me to the Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida,” Bob adds, as he explains that he “floats between Maryland; Bethany Beach, Delaware; and Hobe Sound, Florida.” Then, last fall, after 10 days of golf at Ireland’s Doonbeg Club, Bob and two friends decided to become members there too, solidifying golf as one of Bob’s favorite distractions from work. As of last November, however, Bob’s number-one favorite distraction is Maisyn Marvaso, his first grandchild. “It’s a really cool thing,” he says of becoming a grandparent. Maisyn lives in South Carolina, and Bob and Beth visit about once a month (not including frequent virtual visits via FaceTime.) In addition, as a very committed philanthropist, Bob regularly supports and has made meaningful donations to Adoptions Together, a group he has been involved with for many years. “It’s not a typical adoption agency,” he says “They do a lot more. The more I got involved, the more I fell in love with it.”

Before having lunch with his friend Mark Lerner, managing principal owner of the Washington Nationals, Steve checks in with his grandson. “I call my grandson Weston for insight on the Nats, so I know what I’m talking about,” laughs Steve. All four of Steve’s grandchildren, plus his two grown children and his wife of nearly 50 years are the first things he mentions when asked about his passions outside of his law firm. He also mentions golf and his Jaguar but then he focuses on three life-changing internships from his youth, where he learned important job skills. “With that kind of internship experience, you would have to be hardened to the world to not want to give back,” he says and adds, “I’m a softy.” So, 16 years ago, Steve created the Give Back to Utica Fund which sponsors an annual essay contest for high-school seniors in Steve’s native Utica, New York. Five winners are awarded a full-time paid internship at area non-profits and small businesses. In addition, Steve sits on the board of a client’s family foundation, which has given millions to hospitals in the DMV. Of course, Steve does not collect a fee for any of this work. Instead, he says, “I get a fee in my heart.”

FRANK ISLAM AND DEBBIE DRIESMAN THEY ACHIEVED THE AMERICAN DREAM AND ARE WORKING SO OTHERS CAN TOO

Frank Islam arrived in the United States from India when he was only 15 and through hard work and the encouragement of others he has achieved more in his lifetime than most people can barely even dream of. An entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, civic leader and writer, he and his wife Debbie Driesman, devote their time and considerable wealth to supporting worthy causes not only in this country, but around the world. Mr. Islam answered a few questions regarding how he and his wife Debbie go about choosing the many endeavors they support: 1.) When did you start giving back to your community? We have always given back in our personal and professional lives. The sale of Frank’s firm the QSS Group to Perot Systems in 2007 allowed us to establish a private foundation to support educational, artistic, cultural and civic causes. It started a new and intensified phase of sharing and giving back for us that in many ways has been the most rewarding of our lives.

2.) What is your philosophy when it comes to philanthropy? We engage in what we call “purposeful philanthropy,” making investments directed at creating a difference in pivot point areas that matter to the future of society or a community. The returns on those investments are changes to problematic conditions and/or the creation of individuals who will become change agents to address those conditions. How do you choose which non-profits your foundation will donate to? We look for programs and projects that fit with our priority areas of educational, artistic, cultural and civic causes. We request proposals and then work with the selected organizations to develop projects that align with our philanthropic philosophy. 4.) Which local (meaning DC or Montgomery County) causes have you supported and are you particularly interested in? Through the years, we have supported numerous organizations located in the Montgomery County and greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. They include but are not limited to: Halcyon Incubator; National Symphony Orchestra; Washington Performing Arts; Folger Shakespeare Library; Strathmore Center for the Arts; Marymount University; John Hopkins Carey Business School; George Mason University Business School; American University School of International Service; Ford’s Theater; US Institute of Peace; Woodrow Wilson Center; Meridian Center for Cultural Diplomacy; Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; Frank Islam Athenian Symposia at Montgomery College; Maryland Public Television Foundation; and Trust Leadership Council for the National Mall. 5.) How do you find time to keep track and participate in all the boards and committees you support? We have a very full calendar, but we do go to all the meetings of the boards and committees on which we serve. Due to the pandemic, we attended many meetings remotely on Zoom. We feel our responsibility is not just to provide financial support but to furnish guidance

and generate ideas that will help those organizations to be as successful as possible. 6.) You often speak of achieving the American Dream. Do you think it’s still possible for immigrants to achieve the American Dream today? Absolutely. John F. Kennedy wrote a book titled A Nation of Immigrants. He observed in his book: Immigrants infused the nation with a commitment to far horizons and new frontiers, and thereby keeping the pioneer of spirit of American life, the spirit of equality and of hope, always alive and well. In November 2017, I had the opportunity to give the keynote address at the naturalization ceremony for 200 new citizens at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. I quoted from President Kennedy’s book and told those immigrants that when I looked at them I saw America’s future. In spite of the polarization of the past few years, I believe immigrants can and will achieve the American dream. 7.) What more would you like to accomplish in the next few years in terms of philanthropy? A major concern that we have currently is the decline of democracies and the rise of autocracies around the globe. The Frank Islam Institute for 21st Century Citizenship was created in 2018 to address this issue and the increasing civic engagement deficit in the U.S. and other countries by enhancing the concept of citizenship. For democracies to survive and to thrive, it is essential for all of us to become citizens who are issue-oriented, informed, independent and involved.

If you ask a motorcycle enthusiast why they ride, prepare to hear about poetry in motion, power, freedom and fun. Expect dreamy sighs and starry-eyed smiles. But then, when talk turns to brand names, engine parts, and riding gear – you realize you need to buy a bike. For more than 40 years, many who ride have found their way to a shop known since 2018 as District Harley-Davidson, BMW and Ducati in Gaithersburg. Beyond its recent change of ownership, the shop’s history runs considerably deep. “We have a large collective of customers who have come here for years even though it has changed owners,” says General Manager Wayne Pugh, as he mentions one customer who bought their first bike from the shop in its original incarnation in the 1970s. “Now, at age 86, he just bought a brand-new custom top-ofthe-line Harley,” Wayne says. As he looks around the showroom and the shop, Wayne adds, “We have a technician who’s been here for 42 years. Sam on the sales floor has been here for 14 years. We are people who have been around the business and the culture. We even have customers whose sons and daughters have worked here. It’s really a big family.” Even newcomers are treated like family as the District Harley crew helps them decide what kind of bike best suits them. “It starts with your plan,” says Wayne. “What will you use the bike for? Do you want it to commute into town? Take long trips? Will you be riding solo or two-up? Do you ride mostly on the road? On mountains? Are you looking for a top-of-the-line high-performance sport bike? Do you need to carry gear? We get an understanding of what you want and we find the style that fits you. The beautiful thing is that all three brands have something that will fit most every type of riding.” Wayne describes the brands this way: “Ducati is known for high-performance race bikes. It’s more than that too, but the Italians set the standard for this kind of bike. Not much is sexier in a bike than this. The Panigale and SuperSports have a look and sound that is unique to Ducati. You know it’s derived from race performance.” “BMW motorcycles are known for their German engineering. They function very well. The design is purpose built meaning the engineering behind everything on that bike has a function and it’s not just for looks. BMW has branched out to touring and cruising lines but it’s still very unique in BMW engineering and design. You see a BMW engine and you know what it is.”

“Harley is an American company and there’s the heritage and design and look of a Harley. They change but they are very much the same. You can look at brand-new Harleys and then look through old bike archives and see Harleys from the early 1900s and see the design cues that are still there. It’s a sound and look people recognize. Not much has changed since the 1950s and it’s still unique.” To accommodate different riding styles that influence the position of a rider’s back, legs and arms, experts at District Harley are happy to outfit bikes to fit each customer. “We have fit specialists,” Wayne explains. “That is their entire job; to fit you to the right motorcycle. This is particularly true in the Harley realm. It is the most customized cycle in the world. There’s nothing on the bike you can’t modify to make your own, from looks to style, performance, and audio.”

The District Harley team performs nearly every modification in house. Plus, the parts, accessories and merchandise departments offer riding gear like helmets, boots, and jackets, plus collectibles, and the service department includes fully trained technicians for all three brands. “The nice thing here is, we make it easy to buy but we can also handle every bit of the purchase,” Wayne says, as he ticks off motorcycle insurance, financing, and all the gear to ensure a safe and comfortable ride.
